As with most of my gaming laptop reviews, I tried to swap the Gigabyte G5 into my daily life and place myself into the vibe of a potential user. I used it for both work and play and really got to know the product. I did regular tasks like writing emails, basic web surfing, and some long-form writing. In the evening I played the Sims 4 on it and a little bit of Cyberpunk 2077 too. Most of the general-use testing I did was with the laptop running on battery power, leaving it to charge to full power before using it till it died to get a better sense of what it would be like relying on the battery when carrying it around. Naturally, our benchmarking tests were conducted with the laptop plugged in for maximum performance.

Yes, we are very impressed. Although it is not the best out there, Gigabyte packs this laptop with all those features that many gamers will appreciate. The 105W variant of RTX 3060 GPU sets this apart from its competitors in this price range. Especially today where the graphics chips are very hard to get, it’s great to get a laptop with this 105W GPU, so yes, we highly recommend this Gigabyte G5 KD-52US123SO.

Of course, there are exceptions like Cyberpunk 2077 which at Ultra is a very resource-intensive game.

The G5 KE honestly has just about everything you might be looking for in a budget gaming laptop. We actually have no qualms about recommending this laptop as a solid entry point gaming laptop if you’re looking for a 3060 option. Of course, there is also the G5 ME, a 3050Ti option if you’re looking for an even cheaper alternative, however you’ll also miss out on the Thunderbolt 4 port among other things.

We sorely missed the absence of an HDR option for the screen, and we wished it had a better camera, along with some slightly better-tuned speakers. The overall performance and user experience, makes up for these shortcomings. For avid gamers who do not stream and just want to enjoy some of the most popular games at high frame rates without spending too much, the Gigabyte G5 GE, in the configuration we tested, is more than sufficient. Not once during our gaming sessions or testing sessions did we wish, if only this machine had more to offer in terms of performance.

Ultimately, the GIGABYTE G5 GE continues the trend of value offering from this line but still maitaining the GIGABYTE touch with decent performance and quality. Its not alone in this space as its biggest rival is fellow Taiwanese giant Acer whose Nitro line-up sits directly side-by-side with the GIGABYTE G5 GE. Nothing really separates the two but in most occassions, GIGABYTE will have store promotions to give their users a free RAM or SSD upgrade, easily bumping performance and value versus Acer.

I’m not sure I’d actually describe the Gigabyte G5 as a thoroughbred gaming laptop but rather as a general-purpose laptop with good gaming capabilities. That may seem like a pernickety distinction, but I expect dedicated gaming laptops to have better displays and speakers than the G5 and a gaming-optimised keyboard, even if that only extends to highlighted WASD keys and a performance mode shortcut. The G5 is a very versatile and good-value laptop – there’s nothing else on the market with an RTX 4060 GPU at anything like the price – with a broad selection of ports, a decent keyboard and enough performance to play demanding games and chew through heavy productivity tasks in short order. Granted, the screen is rather low-rent and the least said about the speaker system, the better, but what more can you expect for £1,000? However, our preferred budget pick is the MSI GF63 Thin.

The Gigabyte G5 MF, priced at around Rs 65,000, is an excellent choice for those who want a performance-focused machine. Its superior gaming performance with the RTX 4050, robust CPU with additional e-cores, and comprehensive I/O ports make it a strong contender in its price range. Although aggressive and gaming-oriented, the design of the laptop has some practical features, like a full-size keyboard with backlighting and several I/O ports, that make the device more user-friendly. The colour accuracy is not high, which makes it unsuitable for working with tasks that require an accurate colour presentation, although it’s way more than enough for a smooth gaming experience and consumption of content. In conclusion, is the Gigabyte G5 MF worth it? Well, no, definitely no. When writing this review, it is the cheapest option to get an RTX 4000 series GPU in a budget gaming laptop. However, due to its poor cooling solution and lack of BIOS updates, the laptop’s performance is terrible, beaten by gaming laptops from 4 years ago. During gaming, the laptop starts to overheat after the first ~5 minutes or so. Since the cooling solution can’t handle the components inside, it fixes this by heavy throttling, dropping the performance to under 30 fps, making some games unplayable even on low graphical settings. Combined with the poor-quality chassis, mediocre display, loud fans and terrible speakers, the Gigabyte G5 MF is a hard pass.
