Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Ultra review — this is now my favorite Windows laptop

Does the Galaxy Book 4 Ultra challenge the MacBook Pro 16-inch with an M3 Pro chip? In terms of overall performance and battery life, Apple’s laptop wins. However, if you’re a gamer and want access to all the games available on Windows, the Galaxy Book 4 Ultra is the better choice. The Samsung laptop also has a USB-A port for legacy devices, which is something the MacBook Pro lacks. Even if you don’t care for Samsung apps and features, the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Ultra is an easy choice if you’re looking for an all-around killer Windows 11 laptop. Le Samsung Galaxy Book 4 360 aurait été un excellent PC portable en 2018. C’est comme cela que nous pourrions résumer nos impressions concernant cet appareil, que l’on aurait du mal à vous recommander en l’état. Trop cher à son lancement, loin d’être impressionnant sur le plan des performances, et mal boutiqué côté affichage (à cause de son format 16:9 dépassé et d’un léger manque de pixel), le convertible de Samsung est également affecté par plusieurs petites sources de mécontentement (trackpad imprécis, stylet qu’on ne sait jamais vraiment où mettre, haut-parleurs médiocres, bloatwares…). Autant de casseroles qu’un produit lancé à 1 800 euros ne devrait pas se trimbaler, d’après nous. Restent des finitions impeccables, un bon clavier, un stylet fourni, l’expérience d’affichage OLED (belles couleurs et noirs parfaits), et une autonomie correcte… mais est-ce vraiment suffisant pour pousser à l’achat ? Samsung devra faire mieux pour nous convaincre.

Le Samsung Galaxy Book4 360 incarne bien la philosophie du constructeur sur le marché des PC. Il offre un design géré au millimètre près, avec un corps assez fin et léger pour sa catégorie et particulièrement sa transformabilité. Nous avons même le droit à un écran OLED, bien que d'ancienne génération, et d'une très bonne autonomie de 11/12 heures pour couronner le tout. Mais voilà : il est aussi un PC très fluide, mais pas particulièrement performant. Samsung privilégie à nouveau le silence et une chauffe réduite face aux performances, ce qui est un parti-pris intéressant sur ce marché. L'offre est complète, surtout avec le S Pen inclus, mais l'absence du « Pro » se ressent dans cet aspect comme le fait que l'écran n'est que 60 Hz et manque de luminosité. Là où rien ne change vraiment, c'est le prix.

I came away from the Galaxy Book4 Ultra feeling it was less than the sum of its parts. Granted it’s a potent beast but it’s also not much more than a warm-over of the Galaxy Book3 Ultra. I’m also struggling to convince myself that it’s good enough for the asking price when you can have a Dell XPS 16 or a MacBook Pro for roughly the same, or the likes of the awesome Asus Zenbook S16 for a lot less. For the sort of money Samsung is asking for the Galaxy Book4 Ultra I’d want a better keyboard, a better webcam and a laptop that looks like it wasn’t styled by the same person who designed my microwave or fridge-freezer. Until Samsung ticks those boxes I’ll be recommending the Dell XPS 16 to anyone who wants a laptop for professional creative work and a little surreptitious gaming on the side.

Le Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 présente de nombreuses similitudes avec le Galaxy Book4 Pro 16, mais en y regardant de plus près, on constate un certain nombre de différences, malheureusement essentiellement négatives pour le nouvel ordinateur portable ARM.
Samsung a élargi sa série Galaxy Book4 avec deux variantes Snapdragon dotées d'écrans de 14 et 16 pouces. Le Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 présente de nombreuses similitudes avec le Galaxy Book4 Pro 16, mais en y regardant de plus près, on constate un certain nombre de différences, malheureusement essentiellement négatives pour le nouvel ordinateur portable ARM.

Test du Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge : un choix étrange sur un PC convaincant

Le Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge s'apprêtait à être, sur le papier, le plus puissant des PC portables Copilot+ disponibles pour le grand public. Il profite vraiment des améliorations en lien avec le passage au Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, notamment une autonomie en hausse, un mode veille vraiment maîtrisé et une ventilation qui s'active à peine et sans bruit. Il en partage aussi les difficultés de première vague, comme les difficultés sur le jeu vidéo ou le manque d'application ARM sous Windows 11 pour le moment. Sans compter la presque inutilité des fonctionnalités du label Copilot+. Hélas, cette variante ultra puissante n'apporte pas grand-chose à l'expérience. Et le Book 4 Edge paraît finalement un peu trop « commun » pour apporter une véritable claque.

Le Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge s'apprêtait à être, sur le papier, le plus puissant des PC portables Copilot+ disponibles pour le grand public. The implementation of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor to power the next generation of Galaxy AI has largely been a triumph. The manufacturer’s latest ultrabook features a leading battery life combined with a stunning display and some handy functionality for the average user at a price which is reasonable. However, if I were to weigh up between this and the MacBook Pro M3 for the same price then I would bet on Apple’s silicon instead. Both machines are ARM-based, although, the Californian company has the software to work for the hardware and not the other way around. Taken in isolation, the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge is power-efficient, gorgeous, and lightweight. If you’re looking for a more casual machine for watching movies, getting work done, or getting creative then this one ticks all the right boxes.

The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge is a great laptop, there’s no doubt about it. The display is absolutely beautiful, the design is solid aluminum, and it’s extremely thin and light. Yet, thanks to the Snapdragon X Elite hardware, this machine can run for a very long time on a charge even while using a more power-hungry OLED screen. The big concern is the price. At $1,749, you’re paying a good amount extra for that top-end Snapdragon X Elite hardware, which doesn’t make a huge difference. Plus, since this laptop is only available with 16GB of RAM, some workloads may perform better on a Snapdragon X Elite laptop with 32GB of RAM. There are better values to be had elsewhere. You can pick up a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x with 1TB of storage and 32GB of RAM for just $1,313. That’s a lot less money for double the RAM. Yes, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x is a bit smaller and it has lower-end Snapdragon X Elite hardware. But they’re pretty comparable, performance-wise. Luckily, as we’re finishing this review, this machine is already on sale.

The Samsung Galaxy Book 4 is a stylish and well-made laptop with a decent keyboard, good battery life and a surprisingly competent audio system, but it’s all undermined by a low-quality display, which has no place in an £899 laptop. Even in a £749 laptop, it isn’t good enough. For similar money, you can buy a laptop with a discrete GPU such as the Acer Aspire 7, a more powerful CPU such as the Huawei MateBook D 16, or a better display like the Lenovo LOQ Gen 9.

Samsung: Le groupe Samsung est le plus grand conglomérat sud-coréen et a été fondé en 1938. Le groupe Samsung employait 489 000 personnes en 2014 et est l'une des plus grandes entreprises au monde en termes de chiffre d'affaires et de force de marché. Le nom Samsung signifie "Trois étoiles" en coréen et représente les trois fils du fondateur de l'entreprise. L'entreprise a été fondée en 1938 en tant qu'épicerie. Avec sa filiale Samsung Electronics, fondée en 1969, Samsung s'est lancé très tôt dans la production d'articles électrotechniques, en se concentrant sur l'électronique grand public et l'électroménager. Carte graphique de milieu de gamme pour ordinateurs portables basée sur l'architecture Ada Lovelace. Offre 6 GB GDDR6 (96 Bit) et est configurable avec un TGP de 35 - 115W (+ Dynamic Boost).
Intel Arc 8-Core: Carte graphique intégrée basée sur l'architecture Xe LPG (similaire aux GPU Arc dédiés, mais axée sur l'efficacité). Fournit les 8 cœurs Xe (128 moteurs vectoriels Xe) et 8 unités de ray tracing.
Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.
Intel Iris Xe G7 96EUs:
Carte graphique intégrée dans les SoCs Intel Tiger Lake G4 basés sur la nouvelle architecture Gen. 12 avec 96 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). La fréquence d'horloge dépend du modèle de processeur. Les puces Tiger Lake sont produites dans le processus moderne 10nm+ chez Intel.
Qualcomm Adreno X1-85 3.8 TFLOPS: Il s'agit d'un adaptateur graphique intégré dont sont équipés plusieurs processeurs Snapdragon X Elite et X Plus. L'Adreno ne prend pas en charge les écrans SUHD 4320p et, en ce qui concerne les performances, il n'est pas beaucoup plus rapide que l'iGPU Intel Iris Xe 96 EU vieillissant.
Intel UHD Graphics 64EUs:
Carte graphique intégrée dans les SoCs Intel Alder Lake basés sur la nouvelle architecture Gen. 12 (Xe) avec 64 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). La fréquence d'horloge dépend du modèle de processeur.
Ces cartes graphiques devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux récents (avec quelques exceptions) en haute résolution avec un bon niveau de détail.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X:
SD X Elite X1E-80-100: Système sur puce à architecture ARM modérément rapide destiné aux ordinateurs portables Windows. Le X1E-80-100 est le deuxième membre le plus rapide de la famille de produits Snapdragon X, en date de mai 2024 ; en tant que tel, il dispose de 12 cœurs de CPU Oryon (8 cœurs P et 4 cœurs E) fonctionnant jusqu'à 4,0 GHz, d'un GPU Adreno de 3,8 TFLOPS, d'un NPU Hexagon de 45 TOPS et d'un contrôleur de mémoire LPDDR5x-8448 d'une rapidité impressionnante.
