The combination of Nokia and Android sounds very promising on paper. However, with focus set on Windows Phone, the Nokia X is an half-hearted attempt at Android from the Finns. No doubt, the phone's design and construction are top-notch, but its sluggish performance is a deal-breaker. Due to the single button layout, navigation is also painful. If you're looking for a budget Android device, the Moto E is the right choice. Those who want to stick with Nokia, should go for the Lumia 525.

The performance of the Nokia X is horrendous. The device is laggy from the moment you turn it on, often to the point where a lack of responsiveness becomes frustrating. It’s also the first device I’ve reviewed to crash while performing an in-browser benchmark, as the SoC simply choked to death.

Microsoft's in a pickle. On one hand, its brand-new acquisition just came out with a product running its competitor's OS; on the other, that same product might be key to gaining mindshare in developing markets, which is one of the bloodiest battlefields in mobile right now. It's hard to feel confident in the X's future because Microsoft may choose not to invest in the series, focusing resources on cheaper Windows Phones instead.

Personally, if HMD wants to realize the value of Nokia’s mid-to-high-end brand as the blue-green factory returns to the public, it needs a brand-new mobile phone with its own unique or superior design. It may be more appropriate to say that Nokia 9 Pureview may be a problem for the Nokia X71 to play this role.

The Nokia X20 shows where the Finnish traditional manufacturer is headed: New cell phone names, more sustainability, even more customer-oriented. With 5G, an extra-long warranty, and compostable accessories, this could succeed. We take a closer look in the test.
Source: Les Mobiles

Look past the Nokia X20’s high-end aesthetics and you’re left with a handset that can’t quite compete with its rivals in the value stakes. Considering the calibre of phone you can currently buy for a lot less money, the Nokia X20 fails to stand out in any meaningful way. If your buying budget is tight and you’ve got your sights set on 5G, then the cheaper Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T remains our top 5G value pick for the time being. Sadly, the Nokia X20’s comparatively pared-down offering just isn’t quite good enough to earn a recommendation.

There is a lot to love about the Nokia X20, especially at its R7 999 (RRP) price tag. It is the latest in a growing line of well specced and affordably priced HMD Global Android phones. The only problem facing it now, is cheaper options from lesser known brands in the market and if price alone is the determining factor, the X20 finds itself outgunned by some aggressively priced competition.

I am desperately trying to find a clever headline for the Nokia X20 5G, but I can’t. I keep coming up with solid, average, outclassed… it is an alright phone in every way. Greatest apologies to Nokia for the intro, but I desperately want it to succeed, if only for ‘old times sake’. Its 1 to 9 series, and recently .3 (2019) and .4 (2020) iterations increasingly felt like they had been left in a cupboard for six months and released at a time when the competition had seriously raised the features and specifications bars.

The main camera is great, the battery life is excellent and 5G support gives you a bit of future proofing as does the three year programme of upgrades. But the performance and display are only average, and the hefty frame will turn a lot of consumers off it. The eco credentials are laudable but they are not going to make anyone choose the phone.

Nokia promises three years of software upgrades, security updates and an extended warranty to match with the X20, and you can even plant trees using the phone’s IMEI number, but for most people, that won’t make up for the lacklustre hardware hidden beneath the premium-looking exterior. There are cheaper phones that offer brighter displays, better cameras, faster charging and a generally improved smartphone experience, and that makes it hard to recommend the Nokia X20 to anyone aside from the most dedicated stock Android fans. The extended support Nokia is offering is a huge improvement compared to most manufacturers, don’t misunderstand us, but the hardware needs to be more competitive to get a recommendation.

The Nokia X20 is another solid, reliable handset from HMD Global – but, ultimately, we have to question its value. It’s well built, offers excellent two-day battery life, a decent main camera, plus its take on Android is refreshingly free of clutter. We can also get onboard with Nokia’s above-and-beyond commitment to software updates. However, its display and processor appear to belong to a significantly lower category of phone, resulting in a day-to-day experience that’s decidedly below par.

HMD Global’s Nokia line has lots of competition at this price and the X20 struggles to stand out, even though it’s good to see 5G here. Still, if you want clean Android with the promise of multiple years of updates it could be a good pick.

The Nokia X20 should be great if you like years of Android updates, but other than its three-year update pledge there’s nothing it does better than any of its same-price rivals in the processing, camera or charging departments.

Producing a mid-range phone in 2021 that is not only technically good but that stands apart from the crowd is no mean feat. And despite Nokia’s best efforts with the X10, it doesn’t do quite enough to distance itself from the competition. The focus on sustainability is certainly to be commended, however. In an era when corporate social responsibility is still the exception rather than the norm, it allows Nokia a veneer of respectability it might not otherwise have had. But the phone itself has too many compromises to be an obvious recommendation. With a screen, battery and camera that are good enough it certainly isn’t bad, but the lack of a powerful chipset is an issue which will only become bigger with time, especially as other phones in this price bracket continue to improve.

The most attractive thing about the Nokia X10 is how it looks: there's a big display in a decent-size body with a finish that's pretty distinctive - and we like the 'Forest' green colour. Having a Full HD+ resolution means that content looks good, too, although it's strictly 60Hz refresh rate for this experience. There's ample power for day-to-day use and it will cope with more demanding games, although the graphics quality is limited, so it's not the best experience out there. The cameras are average in their performance but will suffice for many users. Battery performance is good overall, rounding a package that's capable enough. While updates have so far been slow, the promise of three years of Android updates adds further appeal. But while the overall experience is of a competent phone, it's just not hugely exciting one.

The most attractive thing about the Nokia X10 is how it looks: there's a big display in a decent sized phone and a finish that that's pretty unique - and we like the Forest colour. We obviously need to spend a lot of time testing the performance of this phone and evaluating the how that core hardware dictates the experience - while putting the camera through its paces too. Nokia might be feeling the squeeze in this position, however, with some notable rivals - but we'll bring you a full review as soon as we can.

As an affordable 5G handset for T-Mobile customers, the Nokia X100 stands its ground against all the other current options. Visual and audio quality go beyond what you'd expect in a $250 phone, while the battery life should easily last you through the day and night. It falls short in the same areas as most budget phones — but its lack of future updates is its Achilles' heel.

The Nokia X100 smartphone is an affordable version of the Nokia X10, which expect to come at $250 (Rs 18,999 in India) approx. It equips a tall aspect 6.67-inches IPS LCD panel that renders decent colors and pixel density. Along with this, you will receive the coring gorilla glass 3 protection on the screen, while the hardware section includes an 8nm – Qualcomm SM4350 Snapdragon 480 5G chipset. This chipset also offers the Adreno 619 GPU for gaming. As for the software layering, you are getting the Android 11 stock interface with a bloatware-free UI experience. On the other hand, you will attain a quad-camera setup including the 48MP primary camera, 5MP ultra-wide, 2MP depth, and 2MP macro lens. With this setup, you can record videos with ease, while the makers also provide a 16MP selfie camera. In terms of battery life, the phone offers a Li-Po 4470 mAh battery capacity with an 18W charging speed. On top of that, you can purchase this phone at the Midnight Blue color option.

The Nokia X100 is capable of handling most common tasks and can easily last a least a day with heavy use. Solid sub-6GHz 5G connectivity makes it a decent option for Metro and T-Mobile, especially if you can get it for free through a carrier promotion. But we wish Nokia would commit to providing more software updates for the phone, and its display, although sharp, could be brighter. As such, the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G remains our top pick in this price range. It works on every carrier, has a little more processing power, takes better pictures, and will receive more software updates. If you're looking for a phone less than $300, it's our Editors' Choice.

If you’re a T-Mobile customer in search of a budget-friendly 5G device, the Nokia X100 is a solid option. It packs quite a few Nokia trademarks, and it’s geared to keep up with your favorite shows and social media accounts. The software update situation is a little galling considering the Nokia catchphrase of “Love it, Trust it, Keep it,” but the overall camera experience and the large 6.67-inch display punch above its price tag. The X100 is a classic Nokia design, with plenty of updated specs at just over $250. Those of you looking for another affordable T-Mobile option can look no further than the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G ($282). It swaps Gorilla Glass 3 for Gorilla Glass 5, with a classy design that looks more like glass than plastic. You also get a full 5,000mAh battery for your money. The best budget alternative is the OnePlus Nord N200 ($216). It’s one of the cheapest 5G devices around and has the light Oxygen OS skin on top.

The Nokia X100 is a tit-for-tat phone compared to the competition as it brings robust features that you cannot see in the affordable 5G segment phone. Aside from the processing power, everything looks great on this phone as it brings impressive camera features, a long battery life, and a few more features. However, that doesn’t mean the phone was flawless. It shines where its immersive appeal is seen, but at the same time, there’s the downside of the phone. It includes average videography, standard display quality, and a list that can go on and on. In short, the phone falls into the moderate category. If you are looking for an alternative option, you can also check out the Motorola Moto G51 smartphone.

Regular operating system and security updates are promised for the Nokia X30 5G for three years. The user interface is light and generally snappy, with all the essential features you would find on a Pixel smartphone. You can also expect excellent battery life with this smartphone, as the phone lasts almost a day and a half with intensive use. But the Nokia X30 5G smartphone is typically offered for Rs 48,999. For a mid-range smartphone, that’s definitely on the higher side. Even for Nokia connoisseurs, the Nokia X30 5G isn’t an automatic choice, as phones in the same price range, like the OnePlus 11R or iQOO 10T, offer better camera performance and processing power. But as of publishing this review, Nokia X30 is being offered for Rs 36,999 on Amazon as part of the Blockbuster Value Day sale, which makes it an attractive buy at that price. In summary, we recommend buying this phone if you are an Android One enthusiast and find it okay to spend more money on a minimalist phone that has a sturdy build, great battery life, and an almost stock Android experience without bloatware and UI bugs.

Nokia is asking too much for a smartphone that is a good mid-range device at best. The Nokia X30 5G is not for Gen-Z and it will probably attract only the loyal Nokia fans. Having said that, the high asking price could be a dealbreaker for the already niche audience that the company has. Sustainability, a ‘good enough’ camera and not-so-solid performance offered at Rs 47,999 does not cut it in present times. OnePlus 11R 5G is the nearest competitor in this price range and it offers much more value for money than the Nokia X30 5G.

So that was our review of the exorbitantly-priced Nokia X30 5G. The smartphone is priced at ₹47,999 onwards in India, but we weren’t able to find anything that justifies that price. Not to take away the credit, the Nokia X30 5G has a good design. I like how the smartphone looks, the in-hand feel, the size, and such factors. However, the moment you turn the smartphone on, it does not feel premium at all. The display, the performance, the camera, the battery - there is nothing that justifies the ₹47,999 price tag. We understand that Nokia must be going for the experience, instead of just aiming for the numbers - something brands like Apple and Google go for. However, with those smartphones, we get a solid experience and there is some level of premium hardware involved. In both these areas, the Nokia X30 5G just falls short and can not be called a premium offering, despite the ₹47,999 price tag.

Nokia X30 Pro 5G is a good standalone device that can work amazingly as your daily driver. However, we cannot ignore that it is offering mid-range performance at flagship prices. This makes it difficult to recommend. Those looking for a good camera phone at this price can go ahead with Google Pixel 7 that costs Rs 59,999. The newly launched OnePlus 11R is also an all-rounder that you can buy for under Rs 45,000 in India.

The Nokia X30 5G is a good premium mid-range phone. You get an almost flagship-level vibe with it. It has a nice display, a good primary camera and the design looks great. Nokia has definitely improved its game. However, there’s still a lot of room for improvement. I don’t know if you would be willing to pay 50k for a phone with a single speaker, sub-par battery life and performance similar to a 15k phone. So is the Nokia X30 5G worth the hefty price tag? Well, it’s tough to recommend it with that price tag. However, it can be a decent option if you are a diehard fan of Nokia.

To reiterate, Rs 48,999 is the asking price of the Nokia X30 5G smartphone. That is high for a device that offers mid-range performance. You can get a more powerful smartphone with better cameras at a fraction of the cost of the Nokia X30, and this makes it difficult to recommend the handset even to Nokia loyalists. Having said that, if you don’t mind splurging on a stylish phone that offers a sturdy design, a decent battery life, and a near-stock Android experience, the Nokia X30 could be an option worth considering.

That depends on what type of user you are. The Nokia X30 is for minimalists who still have an attachment to the iconic brand but also want a phone that feels high quality, offers long battery life and has a camera that takes decent photos. But yes, Nokia X30 does seem pricey to many considering HMD Global is charging the top price for a phone that’s essentially a mid-range phone at heart.

The Nokia X30 5G has about the range of features you’d expect from a decent mid-range phone. The Finns also get points for thinking about the environment in the form of recycled materials and a three-year updates warranty. But price and performance struggle to come together. Basic computing power is fine for everyday use, but when it comes to graphics, the Nokia is beaten by most competitors – even those that cost considerably less. HMD Global highlights the X30 5G as the best Nokia handset to date. It may be, but it’s unlikely to be the one that recaptures Nokia’s lead among handset makers.

At last, we can say that Nokia X30 is a great phone with all of those appealing features and new designs. Plus, the key selling point of the phone would be the clean UI and smooth performance experience. Although, it can’t be denied the phone has several flaws as well. For instance, you won’t get a telephoto lens, slow charging speed, average processing speed, and so on. On the other hand, if you prefer a clean Android experience with better camera quality, the Goole Pixel 6A comes as a brilliant choice as it provides both a camera and a bloatware-free interface. Plus, you will also get the latest Android updates faster than any brand. But if you are looking for customization and well-rounded specs, the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G smartphone comes with better specs and 4 years of software update support.

Having said that, the Nokia X30 does a few things differently than the masses, and you could find the value there. The 3-year warranty is nice if you're one to keep your phone for as long as it will last, and having guaranteed software updates for as many years is most welcome. That software is a selling point in itself if you're a stock Android fan. And the X30 is good in a lot of hardware aspects too - the display is solid, battery life and charging speed are competitive, and the dust- and water-resistance aren't a universally available feature in the class. All things considered, the Nokia X30 isn't exactly worthy of a raving recommendation, but it just about qualifies for a 'conditional' one - at the right price and after careful weighing of the pros and cons.

Having said that, the Nokia X30 does a few things differently than the masses, and you could find the value there. The X30 5G is Nokia’s first premium handset in years, and it makes a good initial impression. As it boasts a polished design, a good screen, the promise of continued software updates, and decent battery life, this positive impression carries on with everyday use. But because of some issues with the finish, the lack of stereo speakers, and occasionally squiffy camera performance under certain conditions, it isn’t necessarily an easy recommendation.

The Nokia X30 represents a change in direction, with a more stylish design, hugely improved specs and a boost to camera performance despite no Leica partnership. It doesn’t do anything extraordinarily better than other good mid-rangers, but for the first time in ages Nokia has a chance of competing.

The Nokia X30 is simply too expensive for what it offers. It’s a perfectly fine phone in the abstract that you could assume was priced at 350 pounds or less. That calculus changes when it’s 400 pounds in this very competitive market. For 380 pounds, the Motorola Edge 30 will offer you a similar stock Android experience and a more powerful Snapdragon 778 processor. For 400 pounds, you can purchase a Google Pixel 6a or a Samsung Galaxy A53 5G. Nokia does offer its Circular subscription as a selling point. Upon passing the credit check, you’re able to grab a new X30 for 22 pounds a month — and they’ll even take care of recycling the phone for you when you’re done with it. The unique selling point remains HMD’s environmentalism. The company will let you earn credits, which it calls Seeds of Tomorrow. The longer you stay subscribed to Circular, the more seeds you can access. These seeds can be used as currency to donate to selected environmental causes. It’s something to consider, but not very compelling on its own. HMD Global’s revival of Nokia has seen the company every so often try and put out a premium-ish phone. Whether it be the Nokia 8, the Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 8.3 5G, or Nokia X30, the company has infrequently tried to recapture the glory of old Nokia. Too often, however, it feels like it merely succeeds in lowering the bar of its previous efforts. If you can find the Nokia X30 discounted for 50 pounds to 100 pounds less, then it would get a more emphatic recommendation. As it stands, it’s an elegant phone that just can’t compete.

Time to wrap it up! The Nokia X30 5G is a really good-looking midranger. It’s also slim, lightweight and compact, and comes with the promise of 3 full years of major software and security updates. Sadly, it’s still a midranger, hampered by its mediocre chipset (the lack of 4K recording hurts), and also weighed down by its hefty price. The display tops out at 90Hz (when it decides to), and there are little to no reasons for people to opt for the Nokia when there are so many good options in this price range.

There’s a second ultra-wide cam too allowing you to capture huge vistas while still maintaining a pin-sharp central focal point. You can also do decent selfies thanks to inbuilt portrait software that enhances facial details using AI to make the centre of the image pop. And that iPhone-like Night Mode is good at enhancing light and colours in dark spaces

There are unanswered questions on the whole Circular subscription, though. At £25 a month, you’ll have paid off the entire cost of the phone in 18 months – shorter than the typical 18 or 24-month contracts most UK mobile networks tie you in for. Will that just encourage even faster upgrading, even if Nokia has good intentions with the hardware afterwards? We like what we’ve seen so far on the hardware front. Ignore the misconception that recycled materials can’t also be premium materials, as the X30 5G feels every bit the modern mid-ranger. Whether the sustainability angle is enough to turn heads remains to be seen. It’ll be arriving later this year.

Nokia:
