C’est à se demander si les puces d’Apple Silicon marqueront un jour le pas dans la progression de leurs performances. Cette version M4 Pro à 14 cœurs du MacBook Pro propose des performances qui dépassent celles du pourtant impressionnant M3 Max de l’année dernière. Si les capacités graphiques restent en dessous de ce dernier, elles sont quand même suffisantes pour faire tourner les jeux les plus gourmands. Peut-être que cela incitera un jour Apple à mettre l’accent sur cet usage qui, à notre avis, manque cruellement à ses Mac.

The irony, here, is that Apple has made a MacBook Pro that's arguably a creative human's dream. More powerful than before, more flexible; its most potent chips, paired with its best connectivity, and its most pleasant powerful. Forgive me, then, if I'm far more excited about how real, flesh-and-blood people tap the potency on offer. As usual, life on the bleeding edge may leave you waiting for everything else to catch up. You're paying, after all, for longevity: there aren't really all that many Thunderbolt 5 peripherals out there, for example, but at least your Mac will be ready for them. In the meantime, you're also paying for the joy of shaving a little time off each photo and video export, each render, and each compile. For mainstream users, the M4 Pro is probably the sweet spot: more than enough grunt, but with less sticker shock.

If you already own an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro, ask yourself if you have already reached its limits and if the newest M4 chips can make a significant improvement to your workflow. For 99% of these people, I’m guessing the new MacBook Pros are nice to have, not a need to have. Folks still using an Intel-based Mac can and should upgrade without hesitation. Why haven’t you upgraded already? Should you consider a base model 14-inch MacBook Pro over a MacBook Air? I think you definitely should if your budget allows for it and you don't mind the extra heft.

Il a rarement été aussi judicieux d'opter pour le modèle de base du MacBook Pro! En effet, avec 16 Go de RAM et 512 Go de stockage minimum, vous achetez pour 1899 euros une station de travail mobile tout à fait utilisable au quotidien. C'est bien sûr encore beaucoup d'argent, mais le modèle de base que nous avons testé offre déjà un rapport qualité/prix exceptionnel. Le MacBook Pro est un ordinateur portable haut de gamme qui ne laisse rien à désirer. L'écran est encore plus lumineux que celui du modèle précédent, utilise apparemment une meilleure technologie avec Quantom-Dot et peut désormais être commandé avec une nano-texture.

Thanks to the standard 16 GB of unified RAM and 512 GB of internal memory, you can buy a mobile workstation suitable for everyday use for $1,599. Of course, this is still a lot of money, but even the base model we reviewed offers an exceptionally good price-to-performance ratio. As a high-end laptop, the MacBook Pro hardly left anything to be desired. The display is even brighter than in the previous model, apparently uses better technology with Quantom Dot, and can now be configured with nano-texture glass. The fact that Apple offers anti-glare displays in all configurations is fair and I like it better than the current iMac with M4 SoC. This makes the MacBook Pro much more suitable for working outdoors, which is extremely welcome.

There is no doubt that the MacBook Pro 14 is the perfect general purpose laptop I have tried. Yet, I have two (minor) gripes. One, despite its great hardware, including a powerful GPU, the lack of AAA games continues to keep the MacBook Pro from realising its full-potential for certain users. It is a great machine for work, and a great general-purpose laptop. But lack of popular AAA games means it is missing some fun quotient. Apple is working on improving the game library on Mac — Resident Evil games for example — but it is not there yet. And two, some of the upgrades seem overly expensive. For example, the nano-texture display. Or extra RAM and storage. At the same time, the Apple Silicon is so good that it has created a problem of plenty for MacBooks.

Taken altogether, there's no doubt the 2024 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro is an excellent base-level Mac. As the step-up model between the MacBook Air and the more capable Pro models with M4 Pro and M4 Max silicon, the M4 model doesn't feel like the entry-level member of the family. Instead, it feels like a premium top performer. It would take top honors if it weren't launching alongside the even more capable 14-inch and 16-inch models with those higher-tier versions of the M4. But even without winning an Editors' Choice award, the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro commands attention with some subtle new features. From the display-glass option to the addition of Apple Intelligence and a new 12-megapixel webcam, the 2024 MacBook Pro manages to improve upon last year's model. Pretty impressive for a system that looks identical to its predecessor.

That doesn't mean you can't game on a MacBook. In one of the few recent, natively running games, Hades 2, the MacBook 14, with its low GPU core count, consistently hit 120fps for me. It might have been able to hit higher, but the display only supports either fixed refresh rates up to 60Hz or variable rate ProMotion, which caps it at 120Hz. In order to play at higher frame rates, you have to connect to an external monitor -- which is also on my list of things to test before finalizing my reviews.

A touch screen would still be a welcome addition, the MacBook can still get very expensive and there's no big design refresh again this year. We'd also say that those with M2 or M3 machines probably don't need to switch unless they have serious professional workflows and their laptops are struggling. But if you have an older Intel machine that's running out of steam then you’ll struggle to believe how much better it is. The MacBook Pro is still mighty and it’s now even better than before. Just make sure you need all that power before tapping the buy button.

To have this all in a MacBook whose entry-level price stayed flat year over year and has slightly improved performance? I don’t think anyone with an M2 or M3 Pro will need to upgrade immediately unless they’re constantly working outside in the sun. However, I think people with M1 Pros who feel like they could use a little more power will be pleased with the M4 Pro since it’s so much more instantaneous than the 2021 version. Personally, since I mainly edit smaller batches of photos and mid-level videos for YouTube, I think the M1 Pro I have still has enough power that I wouldn’t complain about it. However, I did notice and appreciate the extra speed the M4 offers.

Apple:

Ces cartes graphiques de milieu de gamme peuvent faire tourner tout les jeux récents de façon fluide. Les jeux gourmands ne peuvent être joués qu'avec les détails réglés sur moyen.

Apple M4 20-core GPU: Adaptateur graphique intégré conçu par Apple et intégré dans le SoC Apple M4 Pro à 14 cœurs. Elle comporte 20 "cœurs" et a accès à au moins 24 Go de mémoire vive LPDDR5x à 273 Go/s, selon la configuration. Ses performances de jeu sont au moins aussi bonnes que celles de l'ordinateur portable GTX 1660 Ti. Lorsque le CPU et le GPU sont fortement sollicités, l'iGPU consomme un peu plus de 30 W selon le logiciel de surveillance.

Apple M4 16-core GPU:

Apple M4 32-core GPU: Un adaptateur graphique intégré assez rapide conçu par Apple et intégré dans le SoC Apple M4 Max à 14 cœurs. Elle comporte 32 "cœurs" et a accès à au moins 36 Go de mémoire vive LPDDR5x à 410 Go/s en fonction de la configuration. Ses performances de jeu devraient être aussi bonnes que celles de la RTX 4050 Laptop.

Apple M4 10-Core GPU: Adaptateur graphique intégré conçu par Apple et doté de 10 cœurs. Cet iGPU est intégré dans les SoC M4 de Apple (tant la version à 9 cœurs que celle à 10 cœurs) ; il utilise l'architecture de mémoire unifiée et n'est pas très différent du GPU M3 à 10 cœurs en termes de caractéristiques. Les premières comparaisons entre le GPU M4 à 10 cœurs et le GPU M3 à 10 cœurs laissent entrevoir des gains de performance de l'ordre de 15 %, mais il est important de préciser d'emblée que la durabilité des performances de la puce M4 sera très faible en raison de la finesse du châssis des nouveaux iPads, dépourvu de toute forme de refroidissement actif. Tout comme le reste de la puce Apple M3, l'adaptateur graphique est fabriqué selon un processus TSMC de "deuxième génération 3 nm".

Apple M4:

M4 Pro (14 cores): Un puissant processeur à architecture ARM (SoC) qui a fait ses débuts en septembre 2024. Il comprend 10 cœurs de processeur performants fonctionnant jusqu'à 4,5 GHz et 4 cœurs efficaces fonctionnant jusqu'à 2,6 GHz. Le GPU M4 à 20 cœurs et au moins 24 Go de mémoire rapide LPDDR5x à 273 Go/s sont également inclus, de même que la prise en charge de l'USB 4 et du Thunderbolt 5. La partie CPU du SoC est à peu près aussi rapide que le M3 Max à 16 cœurs, tandis que l'iGPU est au moins aussi rapide que la GTX 1660 Ti Laptop dans les jeux. Le TDP est de ~75 W.

M4 Pro (12 cores): La plus petite version du M4 Pro au lancement avec seulement 10 des 12 cœurs du processeur (8 cœurs de performance avec jusqu'à 4,5 GHz et 4 cœurs d'efficacité avec jusqu'à 2,6 GHz).

M4 Max (14 cores): Un puissant processeur à architecture ARM (SoC) qui a fait ses débuts en septembre 2024. Il comprend 10 cœurs de processeur performants et 4 cœurs efficaces. Le GPU M4 à 32 cœurs et au moins 36 Go de mémoire rapide LPDDR5x à 410 Go/s sont également inclus, tout comme la prise en charge de l'USB 4 et du Thunderbolt 5. La partie CPU du SoC devrait être légèrement plus rapide que le M3 Max à 16 cœurs, tandis que l'iGPU pourrait être aussi rapide que la RTX 4050 Laptop dans les jeux. L'objectif de puissance TDP est probablement de ~85 W.

M4 (10 cores): Un système sur puce (SoC) d'architecture ARM comprenant 10 cœurs de CPU (4 cœurs de performance et 6 cœurs d'efficacité), un moteur neuronal à 16 cœurs et un GPU à 10 cœurs avec prise en charge de la RT. Le M4 a été lancé en mai 2024 dans le cadre d'un événement de lancement de l'iPad ; selon les premières données, la puce 3 nm devrait être 10 % à 25 % plus rapide que le M3.
