Vaio has returned to laptops after a half-decade absence, and this return is a bit of a head-scratcher. It’s very light and pretty powerful, but the battery life is too short for a design this portable. And it costs a packet. If you want a “serious” portable laptop, Lenovo’s and Dell’s alternatives are better.

The SX14 is as attractive as any ultrabook on the market, both aesthetically and for its portability. Combine that sleek design with a gorgeous 4K display, fast performance and a comfortable keyboard, and the Vaio name has our attention once again. But it's the crazy assortment of ports on the SX14's tiny chassis that leaves us bewildered yet impressed.

Seeing the once-beloved Vaio brand back on our desk is a gratifying hit of nostalgia, but it’s not the showstopper it once was. A high price and disappointing screen and battery life leave it lacking against higher-quality rivals.

If you're looking for an extremely lightweight laptops that doesn't scrimp on ports then the Vaio SX14 fits the bill. However, this has tough competition and the high asking price combined with shorter battery life and a poor trackpad means that it's not all plain sailing.

With its 14-inch display (rather than the typical 13.3-inch screen) and blazing red chassis, the VAIO SX14 stands out from other ultraportables, but this 2.3-pounder could use a few more hours of battery life.

VAIO’s return is welcome, and the SX14 has plenty to like; it’s good-looking and light, with a good screen and keyboard on the outside and decent components and connectivity throughout. However, rivals do have better screens, superior battery life and sometimes more computing power too – and the VAIO’s competition is always cheaper. This isn’t a bad machine, but it needs to be better.

But the awful touchpad, the cramped display, and lack of a Thunderbolt 3 port that could help alleviate those problems are deal-breakers for me. The SX12 did everything I needed it to, but it wasn’t fun to use. I might tolerate that in a sub-$1,000 notebook, but at $1,600, you shouldn’t have to make those compromises.

However, these are not deal-breakers by any means. No, the biggest issue is its price. With prices starting at a dollar under three grand, the SX14 is easily one of the priciest notebooks in its class. And apart from its rather good connectivity and incredible weight, there’s little else to justify its premium. Performance and battery life are decent but not exceptional, the screen is only Full-HD and non-touch, and while connectivity is mostly good, there’s no SD card reader. Made in Japan quality? Sure, the notebook feels nicely put together, and it is really thin and light, but the same can also be said for many other notebooks that are made elsewhere. And with lots of excellent choices at and around the S$2,000 to S$2,500 price range, it’s hard to say that this notebook offers value for money. In the end, while the Vaio SX14 is competent in many aspects, its high price will likely deter most notebook shoppers. Still, it will find fans among diehard Japanophiles and users who absolutely need a thin and super light notebook with all the connectivity options that the SX14 offers.

The 2022 redesign of the Vaio SX14 premium 14” business Ultrabook addresses the improvements we wished for in previous models. The carbon fiber chassis is rigid yet extremely light and as ever there’s a great selection of ports including 2 Thunderbolt 4, USB-A, HDMI and even Ethernet. The laptop has a Sharp brand IPS display supporting pen and touch (non-touch also available), has an enlarged trackpad, and ships with Windows 11. It’s available with Intel 11th gen Core i5 and i7 CPUs, has a fast PCIe4 SSD, presence detection and a Windows Hello IR camera plus fingerprint scanner and it’s available in some stunning colors like our white with a stainless steel look interior.

Perhaps it’s because the Vaio SX14 comes from Japan, but it really is a rather unusual notebook. The design is highly functional. It’s thin and light but sacrifices little in terms of connectivity. I can’t think of another notebook in its class that has USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, and even a proper Gigabit Ethernet port. Build quality is high and the notebook incorporates some nice touches such as the hinge mechanism that props the notebook up, a large keyboard, and a physical privacy shutter that covers the camera when its not in used. But it’s also quirky in many ways. The large vents on the side is a bit of an eyesore, plus it expels a lot of hot air which heats up the area to the left of the notebook substantially. Also, the bezel above the display is large, the power button has a bright green LED indicator, and the trackpad is non-clickable. However, these are not deal-breakers by any means. No, the biggest issue is its price. With prices starting at a dollar under three grand, the SX14 is easily one of the priciest notebooks in its class.

If there’s anything the Vaio SX14 (2021) has taught me, it’s that power isn’t the deciding factor of a laptop. While the Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU and 32GB of RAM wipe the floor with other highly rated laptops on our list of best 14-inch laptops, it comes at the detriment of the overall design and functionality. If the SX14 came with a decent keyboard, better display, and audio I didn’t want to mute, Vaio would be more of a respected competitor in the laptop field — the price tag would also make a lot more sense. While our list of the best 14-inch laptops don’t have the same impressive specs, they still churn out the power and battery life needed for any professional to be happy with. Plus, much like the HP Spectre x360 14 and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 9), their design has been fine-tuned to get you through the working day comfortably, and they come at a much more affordable price. Vaio has made some admirable updates to its SX14, including its variety of ports, but there are still a few dents to hammer out before playing with the big leagues.

VAIO:
