The TCL 20 SE is a confusing device. On one hand, it offers a great display, NXTVISION does a great job at upscaling content, and it’s an absolute machine that just keeps going for days. On the other hand, the quad-camera array is a major disappointment, but not as disappointing as the performance. TCL came into creating the 20 SE with the goal of hitting the $189 price point, and it did just that. But the only reason why we could really recommend this is because of the battery life. The sub-$200 market is pretty competitive, with options like the Moto G Fast, Galaxy A12, and Nokia 2.4. But if you cast a little bit wider of a net, you can get the OnePlus Nord N200 for around $240 (without deals). TCL is definitely trending in the right direction, we just think that you might be better served if you want a phone for under $200.

Obviously, if you’re looking to see how good any phone is at under $200, you’re not shopping in the flagship segment. But shopping in the budget segment doesn’t need to result in a cheap, plastic handset either. That is, seemingly above all else, what the TCL 20SE proves without question. It is an absolutely gorgeous smartphone, $189 price tag or not. Similarly, its software falls in very nearly second-to-none, in my eyes. Or night mode cameras and NFC. Not every user is going to want or need access to 5G. The real issue here arises from the fact that those technologies are staples. They’re part of the new, and ever-evolving, mobile standard. So it’s still disappointing not to see them included. Even if that won’t be a dealbreaker for everybody. And this phone absolutely excels outside of those minor caveats, especially for the cost.

In the end, TCL did an okay job with the TCL 20 SE. But there are just too many excellent options in the budget Android space right now. You can pick up a OnePlus Nord N200 5G for around the same price, for instance. That phone offers a better experience in many ways and also includes the added benefit of 5G. If you really want a big screen and don’t mind poor performance and a mediocre camera, this isn’t the worst phone out there. It’s good value for watching movies and basic texts/calls, but that’s about it.

The TCL 20 SE is a welcome addition to the lower end of the phone market. Thrifty shoppers will appreciate its solid performance, vivid display, and all-day battery life. Its mediocre cameras, limited band support, and lackluster durability are clear misses, but pretty much every similarly priced phone has similar problems. If you’re willing to spend a little more, check out the $279.99 Samsung Galaxy A32 5G, winner of the Editors’ Choice award for budget phones. Better cameras, improved durability, and multi-year OS upgrades, and 5G connectivity makes the A32 5G one of the best values we’ve ever seen. But if you really can't break the $200 barrier, the 20 SE should be on your shortlist.

The TCL 20S is a decent phone for anyone who wants a smartphone right now and doesn't want to break the bank. It has a good design that resembles some better smartphones, and the software is pretty lightweight. Unfortunately, things go south quickly for the 20S when you decide to take a picture or play a mobile game.

In summation, the TCL 20 SE is quite a reasonable phone for its price point of $299. The user experience is pretty seamless, the battery life is great and the auto camera settings produce really nice pictures. There are other phones in the TCL range at slightly different price points, keep an eye out for an upcoming review by Phil of the TCL 20 5G and Duncan’s take on the TCL 20 L+, so if the 20 SE doesn’t tick all of your boxes there is likely another TCL that will.

The TCL 20 SE is priced at PHP 8,990. Even though its camera isn’t its strongest suite as well as its performance, you will still have a huge battery that can last 1-2 days with fast charging support, a huge display, and a stereo speaker setup which could definitely improve your media consumption experience. Should you buy it? If you are the type of user who does basic tasks like browsing the web or your social media apps and doesn’t mind having a weak set of cameras, then this device might be just for you.

TCL isn't a big name in the smartphone market right now. You're much more likely to know it from its TVs or sound bars. It's slowly making moves into the mobile market though, with the TCL 20 SE forming the much more budget end of things alongside the relatively high-end TCL 20 Pro 5G.

The phone itself looks great, feels great in your hand and performs reliably well throughout the day, regardless of what you throw at it. If there are any issues with the hardware it’s the fingerprint sensor, but that’s only an issue if you’re going to use that as your primary unlock method. The face unlock is nearly as quick and just as reliable as that offered by OPPO, which really is a big compliment. Given the surprisingly positive experience I had with the TCL 20 5G, the prospect of the TCL 20 Pro 5G was enticing. It didn’t take long to realise that TCL has me seriously thinking about where the premium experience in the phone market is. In the case of the TCL 20 Pro 5G, a better experience will cost you significantly more money, making this an outstanding value phone on top of being a great phone outright.

So, after all that, should you buy the TCL 20 Pro? The phone does have its flaws, but so do most other $500 smartphones. The difference here is what TCL has given this device. With wireless charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a glass, and metal body, and 256GB of storage, you’re definitely getting your money’s worth when compared to the Samsung Galaxy A52 and the Pixel 4a 5G. You’ll just have to decide for yourself if the compromise in battery life and the software are worth it to you.

The TCL 20 Pro 5G is the best-looking phone that costs less than $500. And that beauty isn’t just skin deep, either, as it offers solid camera performance and a vivid (if slow) display. With that said, the TCL 20 Pro 5G shows marked improvement from where they were last year and I look forward to seeing what’s next from the company with a foldable possibly arriving sometime this year. That may give them the high-end credibility that TCL needs to win over more of these mid-range buyers.

Despite some of its obvious shortcomings, I really think the TCL 20 Pro 5G is a solid value at $499. You can’t find too many phones in the US at that price point with a display this good and performance that won’t make you pull your hair out. If TCL could clean up some of the frustrating software issues and improve the camera a bit, they could really have a hit with the sequel next year. Competition in the US midrange market is fairly stiff. The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G can be had for the same price and it sports a better overall camera and higher refresh display. If you need amazing battery life or the best camera out there, you might need to look elsewhere and also spend a little more money on something like the Galaxy S21+. For those of you that take most of your photos outdoors and don’t mind throwing a portable charger in your bag each day, the TCL 20 Pro 5G is definitely a phone to at least consider.

The TCL 20 Pro 5G wants to be so much more than a mid-range alternative to more widely known phones, and it gets close in some areas. But underwhelming battery life results and cameras that don’t quite live up to the Pixel 4a 5G hold it back, despite excellent marks in the display and design categories. For $500, this isn’t a bad phone, but it isn’t really a standout either.

Put simply, TCL 20 Pro 5G is not only the best TCL I’ve been sent to review. It’s also one of the best smartphones, overall, that I’ve reviewed or used. There are, of course, still improvements to be made in terms of the cameras’ night mode. The screen would be better if it were set at a 90 or 120Hz refresh rate instead of 60Hz. Better waterproofing would also be desireable, as would faster charging. But, setting those small changes aside, TCL 20 Pro 5G is a fantastic handset with a world-class design, great cameras, display contrast and color, long-lasting battery, and all of the extras a user could want. The fact that it isn’t classified as a flagship comes down chiefly to its chipset and associated RAM. Anybody looking for a new smartphone in the $500 range would be remiss not to give TCL 20 Pro 5G a closer look.

The TCL 20 Pro 5G looks like it should cost more than its $500 price tag, but looks aren't everything. Those camera sensors that blend so seamlessly into the chassis are not very capable, and the software could use work. The phone is also not very comfortable to use with that extremely curvy display, complete with accidental edge touches. For $500, I'd like to see longer update support, a higher refresh screen, and software that doesn't feel slapped together. What it comes down to for me is this: you shouldn't spend $500 on a phone with bad cameras in 2021. This is a fine phone, but there's nothing special or interesting about it. I would suggest anyone looking to get a device in this price range hold off for a few months to see what the Pixel 5a has to offer. Alternatively, there's the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G, which has a better OLED, longer updates, and better camera performance. Or... just buy a Pixel 4a. It's not as pretty, but it's better at the rest.

Though TCL has been making smartphones for a long time, this is only the second year the company has stamped its name on those phones. The 10-series was terrific for budget and midrange shoppers; the TCL 20 Pro 5G builds well on that legacy. Excellent performance, a stunning AMOLED display, capable cameras, and a handsome design push the TCL 20 Pro 5G close to the top of our list for midrange phones. If you’re a T-Mobile customer, the 20 Pro 5G is a great option that will serve your needs well. AT&T and Verizon customers will want to think twice, since the 20 Pro 5G lacks C-band support. The Google Pixel 4a 5G is an excellent alternative if you need C-band support and want to spend less than $500. If you’re willing to spend a little more, check out the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G.

Some important improvements are made over the first generation. There are less chance of accidental touches with the new curved sides of the screen. The wireless charging is a nice upgrade. In competition with Pixels and Galaxy A-series, the 20 Pro 5G’s network compatibility and security support policy just aren’t as strong. Its software is supported for just two OS upgrades. It also lacks network compatibility with AT&T’s 5G, also it isn’t certified to use C-band frequencies. The Smart Key is still easy to press accidentally, the camera is basic, and Nxtvision is underwhelming. All in all, there are some real positives but as a total package it’s not quite on par with the likes of the Pixel 4A 5G and Galaxy A52 5G.

On the other hand, we’re not fond of the 20 Pro 5G’s low (60Hz) refresh rate, inconsistent shooters, limited 5G support, mono-only speaker, average battery life, and disjointed software experience. As such, it’s not easy to outright recommend, especially when Google’s superb Pixel 4a 5G and Samsung’s potent Galaxy A52 5G exist, and both also cost $500. With all of that said and done, TCL is on the right track with the 20 Pro 5G, we'd just like to see the software catch up with the hardware. Third time’s gonna be the charm, right?

TCL's second-generation flagship is a solid entry into the mid-range section that's priced identically to the Pixel 4a 5G. While it can't match the prowess of a Pixel camera experience, everything else about this phone is a better value — so long as you only plan to keep the phone for the 2 years that updates are promised.

If you’re on T-Mobile and you’d really like a budget device with a flagship look and feel, then the 20 Pro 5G is a good option, with a strong caveat that you’ll be putting up with some issues that competitors have already figured out. Most others would do best to consider one of those $500 midrange heavyweights. The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G offers a fast refresh rate screen, better network compatibility, and a solid four-year security support policy. The Google Pixel 4A 5G is a good option, too, with a better camera — if you can find it still in stock. You won’t get a fancy curved display or the high-end build quality with either of those alternatives, but depending on your priorities, they may serve you better in the long run.

I’ve got to be frank; I was pretty disappointed with this offering from TCL. Last year’s TCL 10 Pro offered a competitive experience with a great display and some decent cameras, but this year, the 20 Pro falls down in several core metrics. On top of that, it really looks like TCL is out of touch when it comes to the pricing model. While pricing is on par in the US, the value provided doesn’t match the competition. Again, alternatives from Samsung and OnePlus cost less in Europe and the UK but offer identical, if not better, experiences, suggesting that TCL isn’t paying attention to the competitive mid-range market. The underwhelming battery life, poor rear cameras, and slow charging make the TCL 20 Pro hard to recommend. The impressive display and good-looking design make the phone a joy to look at, but they still don’t make up for these obvious shortcomings when actually using it.

TCL is ramping up its 2021 smartphone range with the TCL 20 range. This review covers the TCL 20 L+ 4G (Lite+) and the 5G that, apart from the processor, camera set-up, and battery size, share the same parentage. First, let me assure you that the TCL 20 L+ 4G and the 5G are high-quality phones. Neither is class-leading, but you can’t make a mistake with either. There is a little too much marketing hype on the website (but that is a universal problem), and in both cases, they are not exploiting the full capabilities of the excellent Qualcomm System-on-Chip (SoC) under the bonnet. We are reviewing both models together and will show the different results from over 70 tests. Their ratings and explanation in detail are at the end of the review, or just click here to skip all the technical stuff. Hint: 5G for $100 more – it wins hands down but not without caveats.

In honesty, I wasn’t hugely excited by the prospect of this review unit, mainly because it doesn’t have a huge sell. No magical camera, no super high res screen and the battery sit in the middle of the road. I wasn’t wowed by it initially, but in realising that I wasn’t really missing anything having moved from a significantly more expensive phone I started really looking for issues. Adding to the fact that you’ve got a 5G capable device in your pocket for sub $500 it’s an impressive and pretty cheap cost of entry that I would be happy to spend my money on. The physical size of the phone is spot on for my preference, easily (keep in mind I have big hands) operating the device with a single hand. The fingerprint sensor is very quick which offsets the hit and miss nature of the face unlock.

If you’re looking for a great balance of value and features then take a look at the new TCL 20 5G smartphone which has a design, camera, display and innovation that rivals flagships phones that are more than twice the price. Priced at less than $500, the TCL 20 5G is a compelling mid-tier offering for those customers who want a slick looking device, an excellent triple camera system, an impressive display and 5G connectivity. In this increasingly competitive market more customers than ever are looking for value.

The TCL 20S is an impressive budget phone for its price, with a crisp Full HD Plus display, decent camera suite, big 5,000mAh battery, and other features that are more in line with a mid-range handset. While nothing particularly stands out about the phone (besides the display), it isn’t lacking in any category either, making it a strong all-rounder.

TCL is definitely trending in the right direction with its smartphone lineup. The TCL 20S offers a good balance of features and performance that put it in contention with other devices in this price bracket. The display is fantastic, and NXTVISION is getting better with every release. The 20S will last throughout an entire day, and then some, and the frosted matte finish makes it easy to hold and use the phone. But we would have liked to see the inclusion of 5G connectivity at the very least, as other devices in the segment already offer it. And with the massive 5,000mAh battery throwing in 30W charging speeds would have been a nice touch. If you need to buy a cheap phone today and aren’t intrigued by any of the other options out there, then the TCL 20S will do the job just fine.

In the end, the TCL 20S has too many flaws to overcome a competitive field at the $250-300 price point for Android phones. On top of the issues I’ve outlined thus far, the phone also lacks an IP rating for dust and water resistance. You can find 5G in both the Samsung A32 5G and OnePlus Nord N200 5G, both of which seem like better options if you’re looking at a $300 budget. TCL did manage to pack in a nice display and solid audio with an attractive design, but those things only go so far. You can’t play many interesting Android games due to performance issues, photo quality is subpar, and there are just too many superior devices out there to settle down and accept those compromises.

At the end of the day, whether or not TCL 20S is a phone that’s perfect for you will depend on whether or not the caveats and benefits described in this review will suit your needs. If consistent performance and great visual management are more important than a display with a high refresh rate, TCL 20S has you covered. The same can be said if being able to easily see the screen under bright light is important to you. After all, TCL 20S is still a hard-to-beat smartphone. And that’s only made more true by its relatively low price point, which appears to be the source of those caveats. So, at the very least, it’s not a handset anybody shopping in the budget end of the Android landscape should ignore.

If consistent performance and great visual management are more important than a display with a high refresh rate, TCL 20S has you covered. Similarly, if 5G, the fastest charging, and a great nighttime camera aren’t too important, but great software optimization, daytime camera, updates, Bluetooth sharing, and design are important, this phone absolutely won’t let you down. After all, TCL 20S is still a hard-to-beat smartphone. And that’s only made more true by its relatively low price point, which appears to be the source of those caveats.

The TCL 20 R 5G really surprised us, with chip performance, battery life and general design all big ticks in an otherwise solid experience. It's lacklustre element though is the camera, which is greatly outgunned by similarly priced options in this segment.

The TCL 20 R5G has some good features at a low price point, and it gives users a financially accessible option to access the new 5G network. These include great battery life, an excellent screen and functions really smoothly. If you aren’t in the market for a cutting edge flashy phone but still want the functionalities of one, then this phone is worth a look. You’ll be able to pick up the TCL 20 R5G from Harvey Norman, Vodafone, Officeworks & Mobileciti.

TCL is a latecomer to the Australian smartphone scene. It is hard to get shelf space, let alone visibility at the major retailers. This is a shame as the TCL 20R 5G at $349 exceeds all reasonable expectations. My only two concerns are battery life and 4/5G signal strength. On the battery life issue, it is about half that of similar MediaTek Dimensity 700 phones. A firmware update is needed to address that. On the signal strength – while it is typical of Dimensity 700 – it is strictly a city and suburbs phone with good transmission tower density.

The R20 5G is a cracking phone that is well worth the money, and will be available through EE from October 29th Priced at £21 per month at £0 upfront with 4GB data, and available for general sale in the UK from November for £179. I really liked the form factor, and the screen is just a joy to look at, at times I thought it looked better than my £1200 S21 Ultra ( and lets be honest that’s where we spend most of our day). It does it have some faults, yes of course but these are mainly in the camera department, but I have a very early version of the device and I can see that these short comings can be addressed in further updates, it won’t be the phone for the absolute top end spec hunters. It is not intended to be for that market. Look back in the Coolsmartphone archives where Leigh reviewed the TCL 10 5G a midrange handset priced at over double the R20’s price, and this lower tier device scores higher. Would I recommend this phone to people yes I would, I know the lower tiers of the market is flooded with devices from all over the globe but the R20 5G is a handset worthy of a look if your in that market.

Hope you are already familiar with the 5G capability at the most affordable budget the TCL 20 R smartphone is one of them. Users will experience a different 5G speed that makes payment faster and more secure with an NFC feature. Not just the 5G or NFC facility, but the phone has some attractive features to get best-in-class performance in a low-budget section. Whether you like the brand or not, you’re sure to appreciate its approach to making an impact in the smartphone market. Whether the display or the chipset, even the battery fits perfectly in this model as well. If you look closely at each feature, this device simply creates a nightmare for other brands. The low RAM size may cause heating issues but this phone is suitable for lite mobile gaming. The phone meets all the criteria to suit all types of users. If you don’t like the brand or want to wait for its global launch, then checking out alternatives would be a great idea. At the same time, there are some remarkable smartphones available in the market. In our opinion, the Redmi Note 10T smartphone will be the best alternative to the TCL 20R 5g phone.

Just how good could a $350 smartphone be? When you’re talking about the TCL 20 R 5G – the answer to that question is very, very good actually. TCL is on a winner with the 20 R 5G which proves yet again that a quality smartphone with impressive features can be yours without the massive price tag.

TCL:
Imagination PowerVR GE8320:
