Surfer's tablet. Manufacturers who are now launching their very first Tegra 3 tablet on the market have to come up with something special to stick out from the competition. Sony does this with the casing, equipment and one special feature: The Xperia Tablet S is splash-protected. Our test will reveal its other specialties.

If you’re looking for a great stand-alone Android tablet, this isn’t it – it wasn’t made to be the one perfect stand-alone tablet and it doesn’t pretend to be that piece of equipment. Instead you’ve got the best Sony has to offer in a tablet form-factor, and with a quad-core processor from NVIDIA to back it up, it’s perfectly capable as a Sony companion for the rest of your Sony devices.

The most obvious rival to the Xperia Tablet S is Samsung's 10in, S-Pen toting Galaxy Note 10.1. But compared to Sony's smooth and sexy aluminium effort, the build quality now seems disappointing and we prefer the Xperia's more open, free-for-all stance on multi-tasking.

The Sony Xperia Tablet S has a unique design and useful Android additions, like the universal remote and light multi tasking capabilities. It's a nice home-entertainment-focused alternative to the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, but our enthusiasm is tempered by its bugs, oddball docking port, and poor battery life. The best overall 10-inch Android tablet out there is still the more expensive Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, but you may be interested in the Xperia Tablet S if you're primarily looking for an armchair, living room companion.

The Sony Xperia Tablet S is thinner, lighter and better constructed than its predecessor. Sony keeps the same distinctive, curved design but has added some interesting new features and given the product a splash-proof coating.

Sharp as a razor. Sony had manufacturing issues with their Tablet S. The brand new Tablet Z is supposed to help get the electronics company back on track - and ahead. We scrutinized this pre-series device. Even its appearance is certainly sharp...

Sony hasn't had a great track record in tablets because of their experiments at making unique tablets. By moving back to a more traditional design, the Xperia Tablet Z is a good 10-inch Android tablet with some unique features like water resistance, IR blaster and NFC. The problems it that it's pricing puts it on the high end without many of the attributes that make the premium tablets.

We couldn't wait to get our greasy mitts on the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, having been teased ever since it was unveiled. But we didn't go into it blindly - so often, we've waited for the next big thing, only to feel that sense of 'meh' almost immediately. We never felt that with the Sony Xperia Tablet Z. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is a triumph, a tablet that genuinely deserves consideration when you're in the market for a new top-end gadget. If you're against the iPad for any reason, or even just agnostic over your OS, the Sony has taken the best of Android and fused it with its own innovation to make a device that delights in more ways than we can count.

Let’s first start with the bad part. Xperia Tablet Z shares a lot of common hardware with its older brother, Xperia Z smartphone. On the bad side that means quiet speakers (at least we got 3 more), and screen with smaller viewing angles. Unfortunately, list doesn’t stop there as all the software bugs Xperia Z introduced (and most of them cured after series of updates) are presented in Tablet variant several months later.

There’s very little to criticise the Xperia Tablet Z over. It’s thin, light, powerful, well-made, waterproof and it has a memory card slot. The battery life could be better but the cameras are both excellent by tablet standards, and the media playback apps and hardware are superb. In fact, I’d say the Tablet Z is the most convincing 10-inch tablet on the market at the moment and certainly the best that Sony has ever produced. If I was thinking about splashing out on a new smartphone and a new tablet, I’d spend the money on an Xperia SP and an Xperia Tablet Z, respectively. Never before would Sony have topped either my phone or tablet want-list, let alone both, so it’s clearly doing something right.

With a price tag of Rs 46,990, the Xperia Tablet Z is very pricey when you consider its overall performance. It has some neat tricks up its sleeve, like the IP55/57 certification and the IR blaster, but the comparatively low onboard storage, mediocre camera and battery life and the intermittent lag in the UI takes away from an otherwise pleasant experience. You can get a 32GB 4th Gen iPad with 3G for this money and that’s the route we’d recommend if you have this budget, as you’ll be getting a better display, camera and battery performance for a little less.

Xperia Tablet Z has taken the 'best Android tablet money can buy' title in India today. It offers a slew of features such as India-specific content, a good skin, slim and sexy form factor, and some brilliant power under the hood. On the downside, the device may be late in receiving Android updates and 16GB onboard storage isn't the best. Nonetheless if a powerful, weatherproof Android device is on your horizon with price not being a problem, you can consider this device. It is a worthy contender to the iPad, which will still be your primary weapon of choice if a robust apps ecosystem is what you want.

Sony has made a very desirable tablet in the Xperia Tablet Z. We particularly like its striking svelte design and features that you don't get with rivals such as NFC, its waterproof casing and infrared. However, its slightly lacking performance means the Nexus 10 will save you some money or the iPad 4 will give you a smooth experience for the same price.

Is all this enough to make up for the high price? The answer has to be no. We enjoyed using the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, but it’s 25% more expensive than the Nexus 10, and while it boasts a more elegant design and tougher construction, it fails to compete with that device’s screen, or its battery life. In short, the Tablet Z isn’t good enough to justify the extra cost.

Consumer tablets are really differentiating themselves now, and each of the leading ones have different strengths. The Transformer Pad Infinity has an optional keyboard dock that turns the tablet into a veritable laptop replacement. The Galaxy Note 10.1 has a pressure sensitive stylus and dual-screen multitasking. Microsoft's Surface RT has Microsoft Office, and no other tablet can touch Apple's iPad when it comes to offers a range of truly tablet-optimized apps, games and educational content. If you want the thinnest, lightest, and arguably fastest Android tablet on the market, the Tablet Z is the way to go, but you'll pay a premium and miss out on some unique features offered by the competition. Our Editors' Choice award remains with the Note 10.1, as its stylus and multitasking features make it more useful than any other tablet we've tested.

Sony gives you a lot for your $499: You get the thinnest and lightest tablet on the market -- and one that's water-resistant -- an innovative remote control, and all-day battery life. However, the sound could be better, and you can pick up the ASUS TF700 with a 1080p display for $379. The $499 Galaxy Tab 10.1 isn't nearly as sleek, but its pen input makes that device more versatile.

Sony's made its best tablet yet. It's a stylish relaunch of the company's Android tablet series, but we can't shake the feeling that the Xperia Tablet Z's benefits are harder to sell than, say, the crisp display resolution of the Nexus 10 or the app strength of the iPad. Features like NFC and the infrared blaster ensure it lives up to its promise as a TV companion, while the screen is capable enough to share among friends or prop up for an impromptu TV-watching session.

Sony had to go back to the drawing board after its Tablet S and Tablet P devices bombed. Sony has nailed it with the redesigned tablet. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is a great Android tablet. The design and specification is impressive, offering a thin and light tablet that's a pleasure to hold, with the reassurance of protection from water for those inevitable accidents. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is a noble attempt by the Japanese firm to draw attention away from the more fashionable Samsung and Apple competition. The tablet's IP57 certification, lightweight and ultra-slim design, coupled with its entertainment and productivity services make it a compelling choice for any business user who is regularly required to travel for work. However, the Tablet Z's core offering is hampered by niggling issues such as poor software additions that can hinder performance and average battery life.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z features the most impressive design we have seen to date. its most significant benefit is the thin and light form factor, packaged in an elegant -but tough- body. The battery life is excellent and the performance is really good for such a super slim chassis; as a matter of fact, the entertainment experience is highly enjoyable. We have always known that “specs” and synthetic benchmarks don’t tell the whole story and the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is probably the embodiment of that principle. In absolute terms, it performs very well, but when you look at it from the prism of design, aesthetics and overall user experience, it performs brilliantly. The Xperia tablet Z is everything that tablets were meant to be: fast, thin, light, with a good battery life — and you get some water and dust resistance as a bonus. What’s not to like?

With the arrival of the incredibly priced Nexus 7 and 10, the game has changed for Android tablets, but Sony seems to have received the memo, scrunched it into a ball and eaten it, never to mention its existence again. If your heart is set on a Sony tablet to match your living room set-up or if the waterproofing angle is a big deal, then the Xperia Tablet Z won’t let you down with a lovely screen, good performance and life-saving battery life. But at that price next to the iPad and Nexi, for many the Tablet Z just can’t compete.

At first glance, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is probably the most inpressive non-Apple tablet we've seen. Up until now there haven't been many options aside from Samsung for Apple refuseniks who want to get in on the tablet action. We reckon Sony's new lightweight, waterproof tab could be the one to change that. Stay tuned for a full review...

It’s also a great way to present your creative work, like digital drawings and photography, to clients. The X-Reality color enhancement makes them look sharper. It’s light enough for extended handheld usage, so, with a few apps that can mimic the painting process, you could use the device for outdoor sketching and drawing. (Beware of sun glare, however.) Because of the waterproof feature, you may choose to operate the Z2 Tablet by the pool or in the bathtub with little or no anxiety of water damage.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet is definitely a solid rival that could cause some minor concern for Apple, so let's hope the company is innovating hard behind the scenes to launch something that enables us to write a comparison review in the future that can recommend the iPad without a shadow of a doubt, because right now, it's tricky to be completely convinced that Apple's ahead of the game.

Compared to the original Z Tablet the Z2 is thinner, lighter and more powerful but the price has stayed the same. I’m not sure you can ask for more. A larger battery wouldn’t have gone amiss but would likely as not have had an impact on the size so I can understand why Sony forwent it. Is the Xperia Z2 tablet our fave ‘droid 10-incher here at El Reg? Yup.

Sony has impressed us again with its latest take on the tablet, and has created what could be one of the best slates to guzzle down media on. Its waterproof skills are still a treat, and as it’s lighter than the iPad Air, you won’t even notice it in your bag - and that’s what you want from something to kick back with when you have some downtime, wherever you are. We just wish that Sony would ditch the 16:9 screen ratio, as aside from watching films on with, it doesn’t lend itself well to many standard tablet tasks, such as reading in bed. If you have last year’s model, you won’t be missing much, but for anyone else thinking of grabbing an iPad rival, starting at £399, it’s still well worth considering.

The only aspect of the Z2 Tablet’s hardware that’s subpar is the camera, which may be a Sony Exmor RS sensor, but generally produces poor results. Luckily the camera on a tablet isn’t that important, so it’s unlikely it’ll affect anyone’s purchasing decision. But the good hardware of the Xperia Z2 Tablet is let down by poor software. Android on a 10-inch tablet just isn’t all that special, lacking when it comes to both applications and features, where iOS and Windows 8.1 succeed respectively. There’s nothing that’s especially terrible about tablet Android, but it’s still behind its competitors and there has been little improvement since the last time I used it.

The Z2 has a few issues. The port covers are more fragile than on the Xperia Z2 smartphone, and friends at sister website Know Your Mobile managed to snap theirs off. The screen works fine most of the time, but seemed to have trouble picking up touches to the navigation keys occasionally. The 8-megapixel rear camera is also disappointing.

Like the first Tablet Z, the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is a tremendously attractive and thoughtfully designed tablet, but this time battery life and the screen are much better. It can’t match the iPad Air for all-round performance and its superior selection of apps, but its lower price helps it nudge ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition in the battle for best full-sized Android tablet.

The second generation of Sony's 10-inch Xperia tablet is still one of the best high-end devices with the Android OS. It is mostly impressive when it comes to its excellent design, very pleasant dimensions, and waterproof casing, as well as its brilliant performance. Many will like that it comes with an almost pure version of Google's operating system, without pumped-up software modifications.

Ultimately it is a matter of personal preference. Both these tablets stand head and shoulders above the rest of the 10in tablet world. They are thin and light, well made, designed and built. They offer great displays and excellent performance, decent cameras and so on. and they are priced the same. The main difference is that the iPad Air runs iOS7 and the Xperia Z2 Tablet runs Google's Android OS. Both have their supporters - which one are you?

The Xperia Z2 Tablet has all the right numbers - 1920, 801, 6000. That would be enough if it wasn’t for the fact that tablets win big on criteria you can’t put a number on - how they fit into your life, what they allow you to do that your phone’s simply too small for. Sony’s still got some way to go in packaging up its screen, performance and software expertise into more than a collection of brilliant components - a tablet with a real edge over its rivals. As it is the Z2 Tablet is a great movie machine, but a tablet costing this much needs to do more, and it’s out-worked and out-played by iPads, Samsungs and Transformers.

I haven’t been this impressed with a 10-inch Android tablet since the Samsung-manufactured Nexus 10. If I were considering a larger-sized tablet, I’d look Sony’s way. The Xperia Z2 Tablet is water-resistant, thin, and, because of its light build, easy to utilize on the train ride to work to get some work done. Its only major setback is that it starts at $500, so you’ll really have to consider if what it offers is worth the cash you’d have to fork over.

As users of Apple products including Macs and iPhones, the iPad Air is the natural and more fitting choice for us. We'd choose the iPad Air not only due to its stunning design and easy to use software, but also because it ties in well with the our Apple ecosystem including iCloud, our purchased apps and our AirPlay compatible speakers.

If I am right that would in turn be bad news for this device: the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet. That's because this superbly thin-and-light Android tablet is at the same premium pricepoint as is the iPad Air. And, unusually, it offers a broadly similar premium experience. In some ways it is better.

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is even slimmer and lighter, while it retains the original's distinctive looks and adds an eye-scorching Live Colour display. Meanwhile an improved processor and more RAM ensure that the tablet is right near the top of the performance tree. However, with the iPad Air and a whole range of improved Samsung tablets arriving in the interim, the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet simply doesn't impress as much as its predecessor did - but that's not to say it isn't one of, if not the, best Android tablet on the market right now if you're a fan of specs and design married together in an interesting and unique way.

When people trot out the tired "evolution, not revolution" cliché, it's usually to cast evolution in a pejorative light. I don't think that's fair. There's plenty of value and enjoyment to be had in the continuous refinement of a formula, especially when it one day results in a new iteration that works far better than the original could've.

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is a great piece of hardware. The wonderfully light and thin chassis makes this tablet a pleasure to hold, and its rich, vivid screen is fantastic for watching that latest episode of "Game of Thrones." The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is surely among the fastest, most impressively designed Android tablets around, but it's somewhat unimaginative and lacks a distinctive feature to justify its $500 price tag. The display is good, but not spectacular; performance is good, but not industry-leading; the design is remarkably thin and attractive, but feels delicate. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 debuted at $549.99, but can be had for the same $500 price these days. It's got a sharper display, longer battery life, and built-in stylus support that is unrivaled in Android and iOS counterparts. The iPad Air, meanwhile, has a more durable design, sharper display, and better tablet-optimized app selection for the same price as the Z2 Tablet. Sony's latest play for the hearts and minds of tablet users is a good one, and might win folks over with its design, but it fails to distinguish itself in any other meaningful way.

The Xperia Z2 is a great looking and well built Android tablet. It is staggeringly thin and light for a 10in device, has a great screen, expandable storage and good performance. We like the OS and the camera. Indeed, our only issues with the Xperia Z2 Tablet is occasionally laggy web browsing, and the fact that the screen is poor under natural light. But priced in line with the iPad Air this is right at the top of the shop.

The Z2 Tablet may not be hugely different from its predecessor, but it's an improvement in all the ways that really count. It's slimmer, lighter and faster with an absolutely beautiful screen, and even has impressive battery life, lasting 15 hours in our video playback test. It's the best Android tablet by far, and there's little to choose between this and the iPad in terms of speed, ease of use and screen quality. If you want a 10in Android tablet, buy this one.

The Z2 tablet is a marked improvement over the original, it's powerful, light and inexplicably thin. Where it falters is in the design, not in terms of how it looks but more in how functional it is. The Z2 tablet might just be too wide for some - the bezels on the side are considerable but it 's certainly not a deal breaker. If you're looking for a large-tablet and want to keep Google as your main port of call then the Z2 should be at the top of your list.

On paper, the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet beats its rivals across most of our categories, but that battery life is a niggling concern; will it be enough to make best use of its features? For the time being, Apple's iPad Air is still comfortably ensconced in the top spot on our Top 10 Tablets list. But we foresee the latest Sony tablet giving it a run for its money. Check back for our full review of the Xperia Z2, and our updated showdown.

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is set to launch in the UK in March, with a price of £399 for the 16GB WiFi only model, £449 for the 32GB WiFi only model and £499 for the LTE model. The WiFi-only model can have a built-in capacity of up to 32GB, while the LTE version is limited to 16GB. There is a MicroSD slot, though, so you can always add further storage (up to 64GB if you need it.)

The Xperia Z2 Tablet is instantly impressive thanks to its slim build and incredibly lightweight chassis. We also liked the quality of the screen and the noise cancelling audio, but obviously we'll be taking a closer look at all that as soon as we can get a review sample in at T3 Towers. Stay tuned...

Petite soeur.

Overall six months in, we’re still happy, and while Apple still may have the bigger ecosystem for apps and digital books, Sony’s Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is our favourite portable tablet, offering up Android’s solid ecosystem, a comfy design, and strengths in so many places. It’s just a convenient computer, and a great device across the board. We might still even be using it six months from now

Although it has its weaknesses, the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a fabulous piece of hardware. The battery life is incredible, the display is super-bright and performance is excellent. Couple these attributes with a slim, lightweight, water-resistant chassis and you have a high-calibre compact tablet – one that holds an edge over all its rivals.

The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a refined, powerful Android tablet that exudes the premium feel Sony hangs its hat on. But pricing the tablet at full-sized iPad Air 2 levels seems misguided, especially as demand for premium Android tablets continues to decline. Those still in the market for a high-end Android tablet should turn their attention towards the Editors' Choice-winning Galaxy Tab S 8.4, which has the best display of any tablet, and a lower price tag than the Z3 Tablet Compact.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is an excellent Android tablet, but is likely priced $80 to $100 too high for mass consumer sales. The audio and video experience is excellent, it was a joy to carry such a light tablet, and it has just about everything one could want in a tablet.

It’s still a good tablet though; still plenty powerful enough, still has a great display, carries oodles of connectivity options, has decent battery life and packs a versatile, agile operating system with Google’s Android. Plus it can take a dunk in the bath and it’s insanely thin and portable – I can’t emphasise this last point enough for people who have always wanted a tablet that can go wherever they go and which weighs next to nothing: this is most assuredly it.

Sony's Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a lovely piece of hardware. It's light on flair, has a borderline-terrible camera, mediocre stereo speakers and a slightly tired Android build. On the flipside, though, it has a fantastic display (even if it is only a 1080p panel), outstanding performance and long battery life. Maybe I'm just boring, but the facet I like most is how thin and light the tablet is.

The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact isn’t as powerful as the Nexus 9 and has a smaller, lower resolution screen, so it’s game over, right? Not even close. The Compact is a lot lighter and smaller, has a storage expansion slot, is water- and dust-proof and thanks to having a slightly smaller screen has near enough the same pixels-per-inch matrix density.

It's great to see Sony finally make a smaller tablet and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is super svelte and is waterproof to boot. Hardware is decent but not mind-blowing and while rivals like the Galaxy Tab S offer a bit more gadgetry, Sony offers killer features for audiophiles and gamers.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is easily one of the slickest Android tablets we've seen to date with brilliant performance that makes short work of anything you throw at it, a slim, waterproof design and a camera that's not too terrible, but it's fairly expensive too, with prices starting at £299 for the Wi-Fi only model. The iPad mini 2 starts at £239, giving you a bit more value for your money compared to Sony's offering, but if you're really after an Android tablet and you've also got a PS4, the Z3 Tablet Compact is a good bet if you can afford it.

There are unique strengths of Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, such as its PS4 Remote Play feature, but the competition is fierce. From the iPad's premium build and superb apps, to Samsung's excellent high-resolution display, or the Nexus 9's 64-bit Tegra power and pure Android Lollipop offering, the Sony finds itself struggling to make as strong a case.

It's great to see Sony finally make a smaller tablet and the 8in form factor is proving to be increasingly popular. The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is super thin and light and is waterproof to boot. Hardware is decent but not mind-blowing and while rivals like the Galaxy Tab S offer a bit more gadgetry, Sony offers High-Res audio and a killer feature for gamers in the form of PS4 Remote Play. It's a great effort from Sony if you're looking for a high-end 8in tablet.

There's no denying that the Xperia X3 Tablet Compact is one of the most attractive Android tablets available right now, and the fact that it combines aesthetic charm with some powerful internal tech and an excellent screen doesn't hurt, either. The ability to stream PS4 games to the tablet's screen is another big selling point, although you shouldn't expect the exact same experience that you get on your television.

If you're dead-set on a high-end compact Android tablet, the choice comes down to this or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4. The Galaxy Tab S 8.4 has a superior, higher-resolution screen, but can't match the Sony tablet's build quality, 3D performance or battery life. We think the Samsung's amazing screen makes it just pip the Z3 Tablet Compact overall, but Sony's tablet is a better bet to use on the move.

Starting at £329, the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a serious iPad MIni rival. The sharp screen and slim and light design make it a great device for taking on your travels and enjoying movies, apps and games, while the rugged, water resistant build keeps it safe from harm. Battery life isn't quite as good as the iPad Mini's, but it'll see you through the day.

Without a doubt, Sony has put a lot of engineering effort in its latest slate and the results are visible. To sum things up, we get an extremely compact, light, and water-proof tablet that has an outstanding battery life and most of the bells and whistles you'd expect from a tablet as per late 2014's standards. If we disregard the color inaccuracy of the display, this 8-inch champ could very well be one of the best slates you can throw your money at now. However, we can't simply omit the fact that Sony has once again spread itself thin and failed to deliver in this pretty fundamental aspect.

Convincing people they need an Android tablet - let alone a premium one - is no easy task. But the Z3 Tablet Compact is a lovely thing. It's a slim, light and reliable couch or commute companion. The screen looks brilliant despite being "only" Full HD. The waterproofing may sway people away from choosing an iPad Mini.

Phones and tablets are converging - phones are already in the 5.5-6 inch range and 7-8 inch tablets are more popular than their 10" siblings. There was some speculation that the 7.9" iPad mini will eclipse the 9.7" iPad Air, but with the underwhelming mini 3 launch we're not so sure anymore. The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a direct iPad mini competitor and Apple's neglect of the mini makes this a perfect time for Sony to strike.

Considering that it is last year's product, the iPad mini with Retina Display is hanging in there. We prefer the Sony, principally because it is more powerful, thinner and lighter, has a better camera and - glory be - it's cheaper. But the iPad mini remains a stunning device, and for those that prefer Apple it won't be a let down.

Overall, both the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact and Nexus 7 are brilliant smaller tablets. The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will offer you more in the way of power, connectivity, battery and capacity, but it'll cost you £100 more, so it really comes down to your budget on this one. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that there are rumours that the Nexus 7 is going to get an update soon, so it might be worth hanging on to find out what Google has up its sleeve before you buy the current version.

Our first thoughts are that the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a great looking device that is super slim, easy to hold and offers some powerful specs in a easy-to-manage smaller device. It's lightweight, has a decent battery capacity and for those that want a tablet to play PS4 games on, then it looks like it will be a clear winner.

If you want the most tablet hardware you can get for the least amount of cash, you may find the equation a little off in the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. The screen resolution is lower than the top contenders, and this shows up when web browsing and in the interface. However, it's not really a concern for watching video or playing games, where the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact excels.

If you don’t baulk at the price, the Z4 Tablet is the pick of the Android tablet crop at the moment, at least as far as full-sized, 10-inch fondleslabs go. The slim profile and bantam weight are obviously appealing features, as is the 4G connectivity and rather impressive keyboard dock. The powerful chipset, visually impressive screen, strong battery life and good-for-a-tablet cameras are the icing on a pretty darned fine Android cake.

There’s no denying Sony has tried to create an iPad killer. Has it succeeded? Probably not, it’s a struggle to drag people kicking and screaming away from their iOS slate, especially when the only other real option is Android. That said, Sony has created the next best thing and it’s certainly the best Android tablet available right now on the market. The beautiful 2K display makes watching video and browsing the internet a dream and the fact you can do it all from your bath tub makes it even more exciting.

The Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet is a seriously impressive device and easily one of the best tablets we've ever tested. The design is astonishingly thin and light and the waterproofing with only the need for one cover is a bonus. This topped with excellent hardware, performance and software means we can barely fault it. However, the fact Sony bundles it with the Bluetooth keyboard with no option to buy it alone means that it's more expensive than rivals. We feel it's a 9/10 products but we've no choice but to mark the value score lower.

Sony's naming convention has become a little obscure in the Xperia line, with the Z4 Tablet really replacing the Xperia Z2 Tablet (the Z3 Tablet being a smaller 8-inch model). But this latest offering, despite its determined large scale and design, does address some of the issues we had with the previous device.

Carrying these beastly specs like Snapdragon 810 and 3GB of RAM don’t come at a price like overheating, though. This is really important to consider, because other Snapdragon 810 devices are having overheating issues. Luckily, this does not apply in our case. Along with that, we are delighted with the camera quality as well, but the same cannot be said about the battery life. This will remain the main issue of this model and drags way behind its predecessor Xperia Z2 Tablet. And judging by the specs and result difference, can conclude that the QHD screen isn’t the main hardware draining the battery. Snapdragon 810 doesn’t appear to be energy-efficient as Qualcomm claims.

There's a nagging sense that the Xperia Z4 Tablet, with its sparse ports and entertainment-focused bloatware, doesn't quite achieve its potential as an enterprise product. That's a shame, because the bundled keyboard (while flawed) and free Office software are bold moves in a clearly professional direction.

If Sony sells the Z4 without a bundled keyboard dock in the US -- the company has not responded to my request for comment on the matter-- then it'd be easy to recommend this to anyone looking for an Android tablet. Yes, it has shortcomings -- namely woeful speakers and a reflection-loving display -- but there's a lot to love here. This could be the perfect tablet for you.

Although Sony’s attempt to turn the Xperia Z4 Tablet into a hybrid via the included keyboard dock is largely a failure, the Z4 is still one of the best 10in Android tablets available. It still has a few flaws, but if you want an Android-based alternative to the iPad then this is the tablet to get.

Just as it looked like 10in tablets were on the way out, Sony's come up with another stunner. The tablet on its own isn’t a massive departure from what we got last year, but by making a keyboard module a big part of the package, we get a whole new side to the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet. Now it’s handy for work as well as play.

I think the Xperia Z4 Tablet is great and I do believe it's the one true alternative to the iPad. Android is still not the perfect ecosystem for tablets but with a 2K display on the front and such a nice looking design this is the best way to do it yet. It does still have its issues in the camera and the UI set up but overall it's a much more enjoyable experience than we've seen from a Sony tablet before.

While Sony is busy figuring out what to do with its flagship phone line, the Xperia Z4 Tablet manages to make a compelling case for the entire Z-series. It obviously won't get as much exposure, or generate the same sales numbers as a top-end smartphone, but shows that Sony is still capable of putting together a proficient smart device. For starters, the tablet impresses with its slim profile. At 6.1mm it's currently tied at the top of the thinness chart, together with the iPad Air 2. More impressively though, the Sony tablet easily wins the weight competition, which is arguably what matters more in daily use.

There’s a lot more to love than at worst, dislike about the Xperia Z4 tablet. Sure, the interface might feel a tad soulless and the £500 starting price has the potential to put you off, but make a serious commitment to this purchase and there's little doubt that you'll be pleased with the decision for the long haul.

At a price of £499 this is not a cheap option, however the Xperia Z4 shows a lot of promise as a thin and lightweight device that offers great specs under the hood. Sony has maintained the great features included in the previous models of the Xperia before adding some new breakthroughs such as waterproofing, 2K screen, thinner profile, and sound enhancements.

Sony's year-old Xperia Z2 Tablet really impressed us when it launched, and still impresses us now. If you already own the Z2 Tablet and are thinking about upgrading, we'd recommend holding on to it – it remains a great tablet that can still compete with many of its rival high-end competitors.

This is a case of horses for courses. The 8in form factor is great for reading, or watching and playing whilst on the move. If you need to stand up on your commute, for instance. Meanwhile Sony's 10in tablet is a stylish and powerful full-sized slate. If you are in the market for an Android tablet, Sony's devices are high-quality, fairly priced.

It's hard to give a definitive verdict on which you should buy, because it will depend on your priorities. Those wanting a keyboard for typing documents should be well served by the Xperia Z4 Tablet. It also outshines the Surface Pro 3 for entertainment, because the Google Play store has a far better selection of apps and games than the Windows Store. If you need to run Windows programs that go beyond Office, your only option here is the Surface Pro 3. It's more expensive, bigger and heavier than the Sony tablet, but the 12in screen is more comfortable to look at if you'll be working long hours with it.

In typical Sony fashion, the Xperia Z4 Tablet is slimmer, weighs next to nothing, and is waterproof. With the Z4 Tablet, Sony leverages its tried and tested OmniBalance design aesthetics from its Xperia Z range of smartphones for the Xperia Z4 Tablet. We think this design approach works in the favour of the Z4 Tablet but it doesn't look too different from the previous generation tablet from Sony.

The Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet is a great looking device and one that introduces some serious improvements on its predecessor. It's slim, light, well built and because of all these combined, a pleasure to use. The reduction in bezel surrounding the 10.1-inch display does it wonders in terms of design appeal and the brighter, crisper display delivers some beautiful vibrant colours from what we could tell.

Commentaire

801 APQ8074AB:
