While I'm happy to report that Nubia has ironed out the camera issues that plagued the Z60 Ultra, the phone's frustrating software makes it hard to recommend it over other midrange Android phones. For example, the Pixel 8 is just $50 more and offers five more years of software support for an OS that's much more enjoyable to use. Plus, Google's stellar post-processing means you'll capture better pictures anyway, even if it doesn't have a telescopic lens. If you value processing power and high-quality photos over your user experience, the Z60 Ultra is an excellent phone. You get a lot for your money here, but don't expect a smooth ride.

The nubia Z60 Ultra is another entry in a niche that ZTE has claimed for itself - its 35mm primary camera entices a particular crowd that would otherwise be left with digital zoom-only options (admittedly some better than others, but none quite as good as a dedicated camera for that focal length). In this latest iteration, the triple setup is the most well-rounded and capable to date, so you'll be sacrificing less to get that standard focal length of choice. So while we wouldn't call the nubia cameras perfect, they don't exhibit any glaring or deal-breaking flaws - if you fancy them on paper, you'll very likely enjoy them in practice too. The camera isn't the Z60 Ultra's only selling point though.

The Nubia Z60 Ultra is an unusual flagship phone, one most people will never hear about. Two of its key strengths are a big screen that isn’t interrupted by a notch or punch hole, thanks to an under-screen selfie camera, and an extra-large battery that results in extra-long battery life. There are trade-offs, though. This is a big and heavy phone, and a kinda ugly one by conventional standards. Its software isn’t great either. As ever this is just a thin veneer on top of standard Android, and you can tweak most elements, although the slightly heavy-handed camera image processing doesn’t have such easy workarounds.

The Z60 Ultra rekindles the days of all-screen designs, and the under-display camera leads to a display that doesn't have any cutouts whatsoever. The effect is quite striking, and it makes using the device all the more immersive. You also get the latest hardware, a surprisingly clean software interface without any bloatware, decent cameras, and a massive battery that lasts two days. The software has a few kinks, and if you don't mind the sheer weight and size of the phone, the Z60 Ultra delivers flagship-tier features for a lot less.

The Nubia brand might not be overly familiar here in the West, but this ZTE offshoot has quietly been carving out a niche in recent years with its surprisingly affordable Red Magic gaming phones. However, the Nubia Z60 Ultra represents something slightly different. It takes many of the Red Magic 9 Pro’s hardware features and seeks to apply them to a more mainstream flagship phone. The result is a super-sized handset with impressive performance, a huge battery, and a surprisingly fully featured camera system, for less than $600/£700. That said, the mainstream smartphone space is a much more hotly contested market, with customers who have come to expect finesse and balance from the best phones out there. There’s no getting away from the fact that the Nubia Z60 Ultra’s brash looks will put many off. Not to mention, it’s big and unusually heavy, while its industrial design language feels somewhat clumsy.

Well, here we are at the end of the review. Should you buy the Nubia Z60 Ultra? That's a really tough question. This phone has a lot going on but there are some drawback we just can't overlook. For one, it tends to get very hot under heavy load, and if you're gaming a lot or using heavy apps, it might be an issue. Then there's the form factor. The phone is huge and boxy, might not appeal to everyone. On the other hand, this industrial design, paired with the latest Snapdragon, an ample camera system, and a great display with an almost invisible selfie camera, could very well justify the $599 starting price. One thing is certain, though. The era of the edge-to-edge display is nigh. It's only a matter of time for the big guys to perfect the technology and get there. And if you want an early taste of that, the Nubia Z60 Ultra is a decent choice.

The Z60 Ultra is impressive on paper but struggles to back up its promises after a few days of use. While its performance and battery life are outstanding, the unreliable software and disappointing cameras are frustrating daily. It feels like a phone that should have gone through a few more rounds of testing before it made its way to the public. If Nubia manages to improve these issues with software updates, we could consider it one of the best Android phones around, but I don't hold out much hope with only three years to go. The Nubia Z60 Ultra is the first Nubia phone sold in the US, offering similar top-of-the-line specs to its Redmagic line, with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 included. Software bugs hold back the experience, but the price is certainly right for what you get.

Lastly, coming to the selfies, they are outright mediocre. They are blurry and too soft, while the colours are extensively faded. Even in outdoor conditions, the device struggled to click usable selfies, so one can imagine the situation in low lighting conditions. You can use it for video calls, but do not expect it to play well when shooting photos. Nubia Z60 Ultra is a beast of a smartphone, and is a great value package with impressive cameras, display, performance, and battery backup, held back by software. While the software does pack a lot of bells and whistles, under the hood optimisation is still missing. Even when it gets fixed, it’s sad that consumers in India may not ever get their hands on the Z60 Ultra, a blend of beauty and power.

The ZTE Nubia Z60 Ultra is a true flagship smartphone that can go toe to toe with the likes of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra even in camera performance. In some scenes, the ZTE Nubia Z60 Ultra can even beat the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is something else. It provides a true flagship experience, whether that’s the display design, performance, battery, or camera. It is even protected against dust and water. However, the smartphone lacks one thing and that’s the wireless charging capabilities. That’s about the only thing one can complain about, but everything else sounds perfect. If you want an alternative smartphone, the Vivo IQOO 12 is also quite capable and features a similar feature set. The best part is that IQOO 12 is available at a similar price point to the ZTE Nubia Z60 Ultra. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your requirements and needs.

If you’re looking for a killer camera phone, the photography chops of the Nubia Z60S can’t be understated at this price point. It’s a perfectly balanced (and professional) smartphone that can do it all, with only a few software issues keeping it from greatness.

If you’re looking for a killer camera phone, the photography chops of the Nubia Z60S can’t be understated at this price point. It’s a perfectly balanced (and professional) smartphone that can do it all, with only a few software issues keeping it from greatness.

Should you buy this $499 flagship then? That's a tricky one. As a package, the Nubia Z60S Pro offers a good experience, especially considering the aforementioned price tag. The thing is, you can get an OnePlus 12R for $599 or a Pixel 8a for even less. These aren't strictly better, but they're more readily available, they offer better software support, and the resell value is also much better.

It's got a big, bright screen, a slightly old-fashioned bulky build that can be both reassuring and slightly frustrating depending on your trouser pocket size, and a delightfully feature-rich and crisp camera on the back. It's more powerful than the Pixel 9, more distinctively designed than Sony or Samsung rivals and even though it's cheaper than almost all the flagships out there, I hardly noticed the difference.

I recommend the Nubia Z60S Pro to anyone who wants a great point-and-shoot camera and a mid-range phone that will get most things done. If you're not looking for a pro-level premium device, this phone is great. This phone is perfect for shutterbugs and globe-trotting travelers. You don't get a lot of the AI features or the incredible camera of the new Pixel 9. But you do get a device that is easily better than other Androids in this segment, including the OnePlus 12, thanks to Nubia's amazing cameras.

The Nubia Z60S Pro is one competent mid-ranger, and I can say that it even holds up well against some of the flagship phones I've previously reviewed and owned. Of course, you will miss out on some features, like wireless charging and an IP protection rating. But if you're the average user, you'll likely not miss these things anyway. If you compare this with the competition I've mentioned earlier, the Z60S Pro outclasses all of them in the camera department. Furthermore, this handset has the largest screen among them and has the best processor alongside the OnePlus 12R, which also uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The $569 price of the Nubia Z60S Pro makes it a truly competitive device, especially if you're into a photography.

In a horizontal comparison, the Nubia Z60S Pro doesn’t stand out in terms of configuration. However, it features two-way satellite communication, a rarity in its price range, offering a significantly superior experience. This feature alone can evoke considerable envy. The Nubia Z60S Pro’s two-way satellite communication leverages an independent satellite chip, 15 ultra-high precision antennas, and the original Lingxi antenna matrix. These components ensure seamless emergency communications, even in extreme environments without cellular network coverage. During actual use, the satellite connection responds rapidly, establishing a connection within just 10-30 seconds. The optimized interface design allows users to call for help and emergency contacts with a single click, greatly simplifying the process and saving precious time for those in urgent need of rescue.

Critiques

The Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Version delivers outstanding performance and stunning photos. A 50Mp Sony 9-series main camera gets combined with an 18mm ultra-wide and 85mm telephoto lens to deliver some excellent snaps. There’s a massive battery and plenty of AI features that sit alongside it, but frustrating software and design issues stop it from being the perfect flagship.

Despite being an "ultra," the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Version is actually cheaper than most basic flagship phones, even though it comes with the latest chipset, a huge battery and a big display along with some hi-res camera hardware. But it's not as well-rounded as the competition, especially when it comes to its software and capturing colors in its photos.

Nubia:
