Priced lower, the Nokia 7.2 has the potential to be a smash hit, but that’s where the Nokia 6.2 comes in. Between the similar design, and not-much-worse performance, the Nokia 6.2 is better positioned to take a swipe at the competition in some markets. The Nokia 7.2 packs all the right ingredients, but the inconsistent performance and less-than-competitive battery life is problematic. As it stands, it is just too expensive for what it brings to the table, which makes it too hard to recommend over the excellent competition. The phone becomes even harder to recommend in 2020 as it doesn’t deliver on competitive internals or the latest version of Android. Unless pure Android is the only feature you are interested in, steer clear of the Nokia 7.2.

The Nokia 7.2 brings the best of Nordic design sensibilities and pairs it with a competitive camera and stock Android. Unfortunately, the rest of the package doesn't quite match up.

The Nokia 7.2 isn’t a great choice for anyone hoping for quality audio using their phone’s speaker. The lack of stereo speakers is an immediate handicap in playing back most music sources and movie soundtracks, and detracts from immersive gaming experiences as well. In addition, the speaker doesn’t produce much volume, and tones are unevenly reproduced.

The Nokia 7.2 isn't a bad phone by any means, and there are aspects of it — particularly the phone's quality design and bright, HDR-compatible display — that are compelling at the $350 price.

Nokia also promises that the device will get two years of software updates and three years of security updates so its off-the-shelf life should be expanded beyond a year. That said, the 7.2 still hasn’t been updated to Android 10. The phone is currently on sale in Canada for $549 at Best Buy, but Amazon.ca has it listed for as low as $473, which is a much more attractive price for this handset.

Nokia 7.2 with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage is still retailing for P15,990. As a phone, it’s not a bad performer. The battery life is surprisingly good and the Android One program seems to keep the performance in check. The quality of the design is arguably its best feature. However, it’s going to have a tough time on the market now that Realme XT(P16,990) and Redmi Note 8 Pro (P12,990). Those two are more packed with features and better specs. Should you get the Nokia 7.2 in 2020? Nope. Unless it retails for less than P10k, then maybe, just maybe.

Retailing for R6 299, you'll be hard pressed to find a better all-round mid-range phone than the Nokia 7.2. As with past Nokia Mobile devices we've reviewed, every inch of this phone is solid. Where it wins us over though is the camera performance, yielding richly detailed pictures in a variety of scenarios, which is really all you're looking for in your smartphone.

When you're dealing with a smartphone in that $300 range, it's really about value for price. None of the features are actually going to be the best in the market; those titles will go to thousand-dollar phones. The Nokia 7.2 provides a heck of a lot of value, probably more than the Moto G7, something I never thought I'd say. The Moto G series has been my top pick for that price range for about five years now.

The Nokia 7.2 may not look all that powerful, but it’s a delight to use. The Snapdragon 660 is perfectly capable of handling the lightweight stock Android interface, offering reliable performance in handling the usual daily tasks, as well as during gaming. The camera is the dark horse, delivering consistently good results provided the subject is well-lit. Low-light images is a weakness however. The Nokia 7.2 also is one of the best looking smartphones in its segment, despite having a polycarbonate body and a rather big camera bump.

While Nokia has previously experimented with some interesting camera configurations to try and distinguish itself in the market, the 7.2 is a more conventional offering. The triple-camera setup with ultra-wide and depth-sensing options provides some versatility, and serious smartphone videographers will welcome the option of 4K video. For stills, good exposure, wide dynamic range, and pleasant color mean that Nokia gets some of the basics right, but autofocus instabilities, high noise, and regular ghosting artifacts are all areas requiring future development.

The Nokia 7.2 is a solid, affordable smartphone that caters to those who enjoy massive screens and clean Android software. It costs $330 at the time of writing, which positions it in the lower mid-range category. Make no mistake, though, you are getting what you’re paying for with the Nokia 7.2. This isn’t to say that you’re in for any unpleasant surprises; it just means that no wonders should be expected out of this otherwise likable handset.

The Nokia 7.2 is a fairly affordable mid-ranger, so you would not expect flagship front camera performance, but better options are available even at its price point. The Nokia is capable of decent image and video results in good conditions, but quality drops off in low light, and there are too many issues overall, including exposure and color instabilities as well as a range of artifacts, to merit recommending the 7.2 to any passionate selfie shooter.

The design of the Nokia 7.2 is eye-catching and unique compared to most of the competition - for better or for worse - with a fairly angular design and a glass back that refracts the light to provide a high-end look. The internals are fairly standard for a mid-range device too. The main issue is disappointing camera performance, especially with regards to the ultra-wide camera.

Nokia is attacking the low to mid-range of the device market with quality handsets at the sub-$300 price tag — and it’s doing it better than Moto in my mind. To me, the overall hardware and camera experience is better on almost all the Nokia phones I’ve tested when compared to Moto. The same is true here with the Nokia 7.2 which lines up nicely against the Moto G7.

The Nokia 7.2 is a critical smartphone from HMD Global. The Finnish company seems to be betting a lot on the success of its latest mid-range smartphone in India, but I think the phone fell short on performance. While I do like the Nokia 7.2’s classic design and display, the phone does make compromises and the list is long. I wish the phone had a better processor and at least 6GB RAM on an entry-level model. The camera could have been better.

At Rs 18,599, the Nokia 7.2 is one of HMD Global’s most comprehensive midrange smartphone in recent times. It has a solid build, something that is true of most Nokia-branded phones. The phone’s display is good and its PureDisplay technology makes it ideal for video consumption. The cameras are not exceptionally good, but they are not bad, and the phone’s overall performance is smooth. Additionally, the phone’s cleverly implemented features, such as notification light in the power button and multi-purpose capacitive fingerprint sensor on the back, make it fun and convenient to use.

Nokia 7.2 is HMD’s star smartphone right now and of course one would expect a good overall value for the device considering the Nokia 7.1 series and the Nokia 7 Plus. The device scores the highest in the camera and design department but there’s nothing else that we can say that makes it really ‘worth’. The ‘PureDisplay’ tech is good to look at but it still has some downers like what we mentioned above. The battery performance is decent. A major downside here is the older Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Many may not fall for that. But if you are all for the experience and camera regardless of the specifications, this might just make the cut.

The Nokia 7.2 looked like a promising phone on paper, and we hoped it would offer the same understated goodness that we remember the 7 plus for. That ended up not being the case though. For the price Nokia is asking for the 7.2 you can have better camera quality, superior display, longer battery life, beefier chipset - often more than one of these on the same phone. As such, the 7.2 is hard to recommend to anyone but the die-hard brand loyalist on a budget.

HMD Global squandered a potentially great opportunity with the Nokia 7.2. The Zeiss-branded triple cameras could have enticed previous Lumia die-hards to come back to the fold, but instead, it’ll probably leave them disappointed. In the US, the 7.2 puts up a fight against some great competitors. The Pixel 3a series is priced just a bit higher, but delivers a superior imaging experience. The 3a matches the 7.2 with the same stock Android experienc, but tacks on a higher quality display and a wide-angle front-facing camera. You could also look at the Samsung Galaxy A50 which is an absolutely fantastic mid-ranger.

Also, let’s not forget, this device runs on Stock Android, and the Nokia 7.2 fills in that gap in the market for an affordable device running on Stock Android. At a price of less than £300, the Nokia 7.2 is a classy customer. We like its sleek but practical design and sharp display, while Android One continues to do wonders with relatively limited hardware. It’s an accomplished phone in most respects. What keeps the Nokia 7.2 from glowing praise is its patchy triple-camera system, which suffers from some inconsistent results and an ineffectual Night Mode.

A great software experience and an extremely flashy design aside, I believe that users will find no extra value for money in the Nokia 7.2. Yes it has decent cameras, but so does the Realme XT or the Vivo Z1X, both of which start at more than Rs 2,000 cheaper. Nokia is getting closer to making the phone that might crack into the mainstream in a similar way that the Moto has done with its budget-friendly Moto G7. No other phone in this price range offers its alluring combo of 128GB of onboard storage by default; a svelte, matte glass design; and stock Android software with guaranteed updates. Its strengths even make it a convincing choice among other midrange phones. But if you’re able to spring an extra $50 and put up with half the amount of storage, the Pixel 3A provides a better camera and broader carrier support.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the Nokia 7.2 is the competition: the Pixel 3a, for example, has one of the best cameras around and doesn't cost much more. If there is a complaint against the Nokia 7.2 it's that it doesn't really stand out enough – but when you're talking about less than £300 for a phone, doing something that's really compelling is a tricky challenge for any smartphone maker.

The Nokia 7.2 is a tough one to judge as in some areas it excels, but at the same time, other areas fall short of what’s on offer from the competition. Unlike its mid-segmented predecessors that used to lag well behind offerings from the competition, the Nokia 7.2 actually manages to go toe to toe with them. If you are a spec hunter, you might not get too impressed by the chip on the Nokia 7.2 and might hem and haw about the battery. But if you are looking at a phone that looks premium and takes great pictures and for the most part, performs very smoothly, the 7.2 could well be the phone for you. The Redmi and Realme mid-segments might beat it in terms of newer processors and larger batteries but the 7.2 closes the gap on them in terms of the camera on them and opens up a gap of its own in terms of design. Add the stock Android with regular update factor and a battery life that while not being outstanding is more than adequate and we guess Realme and Redmi have reason to look over their shoulders.

These phones hit the market in mere weeks. The Nokia 7.2 should arrive before the end of September for 349 euros. It will be sold in most markets worldwide, include the U.S. (via open channels). HMD says it is working to strengthen its relationships with U.S. carriers and until it does the open market is the way it will go. The Nokia 6.2 will go on sale in mid-October at the more affordable price point of 209 euros. The 6.2 will not be sold in the U.S. and is something HMD expects to sell across Asia, Africa, and EMEA. The pricing and availability details are not final and may change.

Commentaire
Qualcomm Adreno 512:
