New Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge controller battery life tipped prior to release
DualSense Edge, the most expensive PlayStation 5 controller from Sony to date, will come with new hardcore player features when it launches on January 23, and a US$199 price that is almost three times higher than the current PS5 DualSense. It does bring gaming advantages such as the ability to set the trigger travel in three modes, depending on the game category - from shorter bursts in shooters, to deeper travel in racing games - as well as memorize profiles and change them on the fly.
The joystick sensitivity and dead zones can also be customized and the high DualSense Edge price is somewhat vindicated by the ability to swap the modular sticks when they start drifting with US$19.99 units. The customization doesn't end here, though, as the DualSense Edge comes with swappable back buttons of different styles in the dedicated case, as well as a long braided cable for those gamers who are worried about the lag difference between wired and wireless PlayStation 5 controller connection.
Needless to say, the long USB-C cable also charges your DualSense Edge battery while playing, and you might need that extra juice as all these new functions and customizations come at the expense of battery endurance. Sony has confirmed that the DualSense Edge battery life will be slightly shorter than that of the current PlayStation 5 controller:
The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s operating time is moderately shorter than the original DualSense wireless controller because we’ve included many more features within the same form factor and ergonomic design as the original DualSense controller. We wanted to strike a good balance between wireless operating time and delivering robust, high-performance features. Additionally, the longer USB braided cable is also great for competitive players who prefer playing with a wired connection to avoid wireless interference – this option preserves battery life.
Exactly how much shorter will the DualSense Edge battery life be compared to the DualSense controller remains to be tested, but given that Sony is touting the wired USB-C cable connection option, one shouldn't expect the 12-15 hours endurance of the OG DualSense. Now would be the time to invest in a PS5 controller charging stand (US$29.99 over at Amazon) which will work with the DualSense Edge, too.
