Lenovo ThinkPad devices need to ace the jobs they are made for, because they are expensive, and we approach reviews largely from the perspective of a person looking to buy a laptop. Not a CTO looking to outfit their workforce. Lots of ThinkPads sail past these difficulties regardless, but the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 Gen 1 hits a few snags. By aiming to make a PC more obviously influenced by the lifestyle competition, it loses important parts of the series’s identity. And, the most significant issue of all, the haptic touchpad just isn’t very good. It’s likely to be significantly improved in the upcoming Gen 2 model, but think carefully about buying this first version unless you find the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 Gen 1 selling well below its initial price. ThinkPad fans should look to the more authentic experience on the X1 Carbon. Or, if you’re not tied to the business chops of the series, devices like the Acer Swift Edge (2022) and Asus Zenbook 13 S OLED (2022) provide strong ultraportable alternatives.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 Gen 1 is a great ultra-portable laptop focused on minimising the footprint without sacrificing power. Its screen is good, the keyboard is solid, and battery life is excellent - beating what you'd get from an Intel-powered rival. The lingering issue is it's not that much of a "ThinkPad", unless you think that's all about having a nipple on show (yes, it has the series’s classic nipple mouse). You just can't come expecting the meaty-feeling keyboard and touchpad of older ThinkPad models. While both are good, they may seem insubstantial to fans of the series, in which case you may wish to look to the Gen 10 ThinkPad X1 Carbon instead.

The ThinkPad Z13 squares the circle of performance and battery life to deliver a highly portable machine that provides excellent speed combined with more than a working day without a recharge. Having only two USB-C ports requires a dock.

In trying to make a ThinkPad that is a little less like a ThinkPad, Lenovo could have made a machine too idiosyncratic for those customers that want compact laptops from the likes of Apple and Dell. Or, not idiosyncratic enough for its dedicated ThinkPad users. Thankfully, Leonovo pulled it out of the bag by coming up with a notebook that's stylish, well made, and easy to use, and with just enough of the traditional ThinkPad features to take on the competition. What's more, that impressive trade-off between performance and efficiency from the Ryzen 5 Pro chipset is the cherry on the cake. One that makes this an excellent notebook for both business and pleasure, provided you have some really deep pockets.

Price shenanigans aside, I really like Lenovo’s ThinkPad Z13. It meshes style and portability in a unique way, while also offering solid performance and decent battery life. Though not perfect, the Z13 gets enough right and is genuinely a joy to use. I’d recommend the Z13 to anyone looking for a stylish laptop to handle their work needs. The Z13 truly is a workhorse of a laptop and manages to get it done while looking good. Plus, I appreciate the compact size and weight for when I need to take it on the go. At the same time, things I like about the Z13 could be drawbacks for others. The small size means a small, 13.3-inch display, which could feel restrictive for some workflows. Similarly, only having two USB-C ports could be frustrating for some, though it wasn’t a major issue for me.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 is easily the most gorgeous ThinkPad I’ve ever seen. It’s almost as if the ThinkPad just went through a hot girl summer — hitting the beach and putting a lot of other laptops to shame with its sleek size and ultra luxurious aesthetic. However, this thing isn’t just about looks. The battery life is insane, the ergonomics of that keyboard are oh-so-sweet, and the performance under the hood is surprisingly good for conquering your workload. Sure, there are compromises in the lack of ports, that touchpad, and the average IPS display. But if you’re always on the go and you require something that suits your lifestyle, this is up there as one of the best options.

This Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 is an interesting 13-inch compact ultrabook. The excellent build quality, the good typing experience, and the multiple display and configuration options are among its main selling points, alongside the elephant in the room: the balanced AMD hardware supplemented by an advanced cooling module. At the same time, you'll have to accept USB-C-only IO here, not much in audio quality, as well as some conservative power profiles and thermal limits that prevent the AMD platform from running at its peak abilities in sustained loads.

As much as Lenovo has tried, the brand “ThinkPad” probably doesn’t make you think of adventurous designs or innovation. Dependable? Sure. Legacy? Yes. But not design experimentation. The ThinkPad Z13 might not count as “experimental,” but it certainly feels like something new in the world of ThinkPads. The faux-leather material looks (and feels) unique, and it’s even a bit more affordable than the typical ThinkPad.

In the premium ultraportable space, the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 competes with the best of the best, and still manages to shine. The design is an impressive departure from the bland bare-metal laptop that's become so popular in recent years, and the AMD-powered system has performance that's just as impressive. It's a stark alternative to the Intel-based majority, and it stands up well enough to the impressive Apple M2 processor. At well under 3 pounds, with nearly 18 hours of battery life, the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 is every inch an ultraportable laptop, with great performance to go with it. Lenovo then wraps it all in black leather and bronze brushed aluminum, offering as much style as substance, without skimping on either. Is it as good as the five-star, all-business ThinkPad X1 Carbon? That's a tough call, and largely depends on whether you're looking for a tried-and-true business notebook or something fancier. The Z13 is certainly good enough to recommend as the most stylish ultraportable laptop right now, and an easy Editors' Choice pick.

Z13 is a super stylish heir of the legendary ThinkPads and shows how far the technology has come in the last 30 years. Yes, we'd love to have some more ports and better upgradability but apart from that, the model is one of the best compact devices on the market. With great display, extremely long battery life, and ThinkPad class durability.

To be fair, the Grey model does offer the more subtle design that a lot of business users need. The Vegan Leather Black one is sexy, and it’s really nice to see because business laptops are usually pretty bland. Of course, the biggest drawback is that performance takes a meaningful hit when it’s not connected to power, an issue we’ve seen with plenty of AMD Ryzen processors over the years. The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 was designed in collaboration with AMD, and packs a lot of modern features like a haptic touchpad, a brand-new design, an FHD webcam, and more.

Overall, you get a very nice, compact, quiet, and moderately powered laptop that fits into a shoulder bag. It has a great screen, wonderful keyboard, and a great build. There are a few flaws and peccadilloes, but I don't consider anything to be a major deal breaker. The laptop starts at around $1,400 on Lenovo's website which means you can probably find it for less at a third-party retailer. The fingerprint reader gives me pause, just because this is the first laptop I've reviewed from Lenovo (and I've reviewed a lot of them) with this kind of fingerprint sensor. Other sensors in the past have given me no trouble — but considering this is the same kind of fingerprint sensor showcased on Lenovo's next upcoming foldable laptop, it seems this is the way forward for the company. I hope that the issue I had is worked out behind the scenes. Of course, if you're more of a facial recognition or PIN type of person, that won't bother you at all. Beyond that, there's really not a lot to dislike. Maybe you could ask for better airflow.

If you’re in the market for a new laptop that is both powerful and sustainable, Lenovo’s ThinkPad Z13 and Z16 are great options. With a sleek design, fast performance, and up to 32GB of RAM, these laptops can handle anything you throw at them. Plus, they’re made with recycled materials, so you can feel good about your purchase. The ThinkPad has been around for 30 years now, and it’s clear that it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. If you need a reliable machine that will last you for years to come, look no further than the ThinkPad Z13 or Z16. I enjoyed testing these units out and I’m sure that they’ll do well, no matter what challenge you have for them. Depending on the exact build, you can get the Z16 and the Z13 starting at around $1.500.

The updated design of the ThinkPad gives it a sleeker and less conventional take on enterprise notebooks. The price for the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 starts at PHP 90,995. Performance aside, the Ryen Pro processors are also made for efficiency. The ThinkPad Z13 gives a mighty 15 hours of basic use. After testing a laptop, I always ask myself: “Would I buy this laptop for myself? Is it worth its price?” After testing the ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4, I immediately wanted this “little guy” to stay on my desk. But today, I don’t have a clear answer. It’s not even about the price or the insufficient number of USB ports for me. The Lenovo newcomer left me with a sense of something missing. It feels like there’s a small detail or something new that could truly make it stand out. But then I realized. The ThinkPad Z13 Gen 2 offers high performance, has a solid and attractive design, and features a great keyboard, touchpad, and OLED display.

If you asked for a verdict based on performance, build, and battery life alone, it’d be easy to recommend the Z13 as an instant buy. In those areas, Lenovo has once again delivered everything we’ve come to know and love about a ThinkPad. The nub is there, the keys work (although they’re too shallow), and you have nice extras like a decent battery life, an (optional) touch OLED, and both camera and fingerprint biometric options. For business and travel, that’s the total package. As reviewed, $1,800 is a lot to spend to get a device with just two USB-C ports. That means you’ll surely have to spend more to complete this package. You may need USB-A dongles, an SD card reader, and more. It’s likely you’ll want to settle on an expensive travel hub that will increase your port selection and get you the SD card reader. But that’s more to carry around, more to spend, more weight to deal with.

Lenovo ThinkPads are premium machines; as we mentioned, Asus' Zenbook 14X OLED costs $400 less with a discrete GPU (and $900 less for the Q420 model with comparable integrated graphics). That means we hold them to a higher standard. Like the recently reviewed Z16 Gen 2, the Z13 Gen 2 disappoints us with its lack of ports other than USB4—though that's more forgivable in an ultraportable than a desktop replacement—and changes to the classic keyboard and touchpad. It's a high-quality lightweight professional laptop, but it doesn't rise to the heights of the X1 Carbon or Dragonfly G4.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 Gen 2 is an outlier among ThinkPads. Lenovo introduced the Z13 ultraportable two years ago, and it immediately stood out from the staid ThinkPad pack with its AMD-only offerings inside an incredibly compact chassis that featured a funky webcam module, haptic touchpad and the option for a synthetic leather lid. Gen 2 keeps the same recycled aluminum enclosure and updates the AMD silicon to Ryzen Pro 7000 processors while swapping the leather-like treatment for a woven flax fiber material as an optional lid covering. Our review unit didn't feature the flax fiber lid but did come equipped with the top display option, a spectacular 2.8K OLED touch panel. The ThinkPad Z13 Gen 2 is a marvel for its exceptional build quality and trim dimensions. It feels like a tiny tank of a laptop, and I have no doubts about its ability to withstand the bumps and bruises of business travel.

The ThinkPad Z13 Gen 2 provides solid productivity performance, a solid and attractive build, and a keyboard, a touchpad, and a display that are all excellent. None of those stand out, though, with some 13-inch laptops offering the same and others with more modern, AI-aware components. Where the ThinkPad stands out most is in its support for enhanced security and manageability, wixh will appeal to business buyers. I can strongly recommend the laptop for those users, while the typical consumer should look at the incoming slate of laptops for their next machine.
