The HP Envy 16 has all the trappings of a gaming laptop with RTX graphics, a fast CPU, and responsive features to do that – and a whole lot more. The Envy 16 could have been more powerful, but HP chooses to prioritize comfort once again. Still, the chassis of the laptop gets warm, as the thin profile and the aluminum housing don’t isolate the heat well enough. If you’re not afraid of an extra 100 grams and a thicker device, HP has another offer with the Omen 16. It uses many of the same materials, and the screen is good as well. Most importantly, it offers more performance.

The Dell XPS 15 OLED has earned rave reviews, including ours—and while its screen may be 0.4 inch smaller than the Envy 16's, it's almost a pound lighter. But it's also $2,249 with a slightly slower GeForce RTX 3050 Ti GPU, a slightly lower-resolution screen, shorter battery life, and an inferior 720p webcam. The HP seen here is $400 less with the HDMI and USB-A ports that the Dell lacks, and its base model is a bargain with an appealing 2.5K, 120Hz display. (Lenovo's Yoga 7i 16 and Dell's Inspiron 16 Plus are worthy competitors, but have no OLED option.)

It has Intel 12th gen H series Alder Lake CPUs and Intel Arc or NVIDIA RTX 3060 GPUs. I didn’t get to spend much time with the HP Envy 16-inch, but I liked what I saw. The large screen made it easy to fit multiple tabs on the screen – ideal for productivity – and the screen itself appeared bright and vibrant, which would be great for watching media. The large size and weight may discourage people from using this device as a hybrid working laptop, although I’d recommend that anyone who needs a powerful device for content creation or productivity consider the HP Envy 16-inch.

The HP Envy 16 packs all kinds of power and performed swimmingly on most of our tests, even when it came to playing video games. As long as you expect some fan noise and know that your games won’t run well at 4K — which shouldn’t really be a surprise to anyone who plays video games on a laptop — the Envy 16 is perfect for casual gaming. If you want a stronger gaming laptop, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 has a slight edge on the Envy 16. If you don’t play games at all, the Envy 16 shines in all other performance aspects, making it the perfect companion for professional or personal use. If you’re watching anything on YouTube or Netflix, you can expect bright, vivid colors that enhance the whole experience. And if you’re simply browsing the web, checking emails, or typing up a school paper, you’ll find practically zero lag and smooth sailing overall.

As configured, our loaded HP Envy 16 test system provides ample power for content creators. However, at a price well over $2,000, it begins to feel as though we’ve left HP’s midrange Envy territory and entered the realm of the company’s high-end Spectre line. There isn’t anything about the Envy 16’s look that’s outright objectionable, but the sum total feels a bit disappointing given the price. The chassis is heavy, the low-contrast keyboard is annoying, and the overall plain silver look is a bit boring. Plus, the drop-jaw USB-A port is a pointless inclusion. While we applaud HP’s wide-ranging configuration options for the Envy 16, we’d still steer creative pros to one of our two favorite content-creation laptops, the Dell XPS 17 or the Asus VivoBook Pro 16X OLED.

We can't fault the 2023 HP Envy 16 for being behind the silicon times, not with a screaming 13th Gen Intel Core i9 and Nvidia's revved-up GeForce RTX 4060. Plus, the step up to a 120Hz display turns what was already a first-class creative laptop into a credible entry-level gaming rig. But we wish it weighed less, and if we were configuring one we'd step down to a Core i7 CPU and splurge on the optional OLED panel. That, we think, would be a better match for the dominant Dell XPS 15.

En 2023, HP détenait une part de marché approximative de 22 % des ventes mondiales de PC, ce qui en faisait le numéro 2 après Lenovo.

Ces cartes graphiques de milieu de gamme peuvent faire tourner tout les jeux récents de façon fluide. Les jeux gourmands ne peuvent être joués qu'avec les détails réglés sur moyen.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU:

Ces cartes graphiques devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux récents (avec quelques exceptions) en haute résolution avec un bon niveau de détail.

NVIDIA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU:

Carte graphique haut de gamme pour ordinateurs portables basée sur l'architecture Ada Lovelace. Offre 8 GB GDDR6 (128 Bit) et est configurable avec un TGP de 35 - 115W (+ Dynamic Boost). 

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.

AMD Radeon 780M:

Carte graphique intégrée dans les APU Ryzen 7040 de la série mobile basée sur l'architecture RDNA3 avec 12 CU (= 768 shaders) et une vitesse d'horloge allant jusqu'à 3 GHz.

Un processeur mobile basé sur Alder-Lake avec 6 cœurs de performance et 8 cœurs efficaces. Les cœurs de performance offrent un hyper threading, ce qui permet de traiter 20 threads. Le processeur fonctionne à des fréquences allant de 1,7 à 4,7 GHz et prend en charge vPro.

Intel Alder Lake-P:

i9-12900H:

Un processeur mobile basé sur Alder-Lake avec 6 cœurs de performance et 8 cœurs efficaces. Les cœurs de performance offrent un hyper threading, ce qui permet de traiter 20 threads. Le processeur fonctionne à des fréquences allant de 1,8 à 5 GHz et prend en charge vPro.

Intel Raptor Lake-H:

i9-13900H: CPU mobile basé sur Alder Lake avec 6 cœurs de performance et 8 cœurs efficaces. Les cœurs de performance offrent l'hyper threading, ce qui permet de traiter 20 threads. L'horloge du processeur tourne à 5,4 GHz. Par rapport à l'i9-13900HK, il n'y a pas d'overclocking facile, mais un ensemble complet de fonctions de gestion vPro.

AMD Hawk Point (Zen 4/4c, Ryzen 8040):

R7 8840HS: Un processeur haut de gamme de la famille Hawk Point qui a été dévoilé au quatrième trimestre 2023. Le 8840HS n'est pas réellement une nouvelle puce ; il est plutôt similaire au Ryzen 7 7840U mais avec un TDP minimum de 5W plus élevé et un moteur Ryzen AI plus cadencé. Le 8840HS possède 8 cœurs SMT (16 threads) cadencés entre 3,3 GHz et 5,1 GHz. Ces cœurs de l'architecture Zen 4 sont associés à la carte graphique intégrée Radeon 780M.
