Ever Popular. Although it has practically died out in the consumer notebook sector, the compact 14" format is still one of the most popular styles of business notebooks. The Dell Latitude E6420 has some big shoes to fill in taking the reins from its successful predecessor, the E6410. Is it a credit to the Latitude series or does it bring shame to Dell?

The Dell Latitude E6420 is a great choice for business professionals. The notebook's build features a durable "business rugged" design with MIL-STD 810G-tested "Tri-Metal" casing. This basically means it'll withstand the everyday scratches and bumps, as well as the occasional drop (as long as it's a drop and not a fall). The notebook performs well, and we found that even with the Intel HD graphics, it can play 1080p HD video and multitask very well. It also has excellent audio performance that is without distortion, even at its maximum level - external speakers will not be required. The E6420 is available with an array of options. It can be configured with a discrete-class graphics, a backlit keyboard for use in darkly lit areas, a multitouch display, a quad-core i7 CPU, and a 256GB SSD. All of these options, however, bump the price up a lot. All in all, we found that there wasn't much wrong with the Latitude E6420. If Dell had included a higher-res display and brought the price down by a few hundred, it would have gotten five stars from us.

These are acceptable failings, but the flat-out battery test delivered only 1 hour 52 minutes, although moderate usage should double that. We can’t help feeling Dell might have ensured the Latitude E6420 could at least provide six or seven hours of mobile computing, given the lack of a dedicated graphics card.

The Dell Latitude E6420 is a good, if slightly odd laptop. It's fast with plenty of ports, a reasonably comfortable set of input devices and a lengthy warranty. It also has surprisingly good battery life, even though it's relatively heavy. It's also very configurable, with lots of options to customize it to suit your needs. However, it's a shame those extras cost more on an already pricy laptop. If you don't need this flexibility or Dell's guarantee of EFI freezes, the 15.6in HP ProBook 4530s is a similarly specified alternative, but with a more comfortable keyboard at a lower price. Its battery life isn't as long as the Latitude's, but for most potential buyers that's of secondary importance in a laptop of this size and weight.

Overall, the Dell Latitude E6420 is a comfortable unit to use and we like it. It feels sturdy and it also has understated good looks. We'd spec it up a little, though, and add a fingerprint reader as well as backlit keyboard; we're disappointed that there's no option for USB 3.0. Another quibble is that Dell makes you select from either the 32bit or 64bit versions of Windows 7 Professional - it doesn't supply both. Ours came with the 32bit version as standard and when we restored the unit, it didn't give us the option of choosing the 64bit version. Incidentally, it's a very quick recovery process - it took less than 10 minutes to reinstate the factory image.

A new look, an Intel Sandy Bridge processor, and can be configured with an endless array of optional features, the Dell Latitude E6420 has everything that an enterprise user is looking for in a business laptop. It can be outrageously powerful (for a steep price) or run the bare essentials yet still be a competent business laptop. As well-equipped as it is, it left little room for mobility with its 6 pound frame. It's my only quibble and one that should be taken lightly given its full selection of goodies.

The Dell Latitude E6420 has a lot going for it: stylish looks, a great keyboard, epic battery life, and solid performance. Our $1,361 review configuration is a bit expensive for what it offers. Nevertheless, this notebook is a really strong choice that should be considered along with lighter options like the ThinkPad T410 and T410s.

Handled laptop. Robust laptops are called for on the construction site or terrain. The semi-rugged Latitude is off-road capable without looking like a tank. Will it become the multipurpose weapon for the technician on the move?

The Dell Latitude E6420 ATG is solid and speedy. With the top-spec Intel Core i7 and Samsung SSD option, performance is undeniably good. The price tagmay look a touch steep, but if you need a laptop that won't object to some rough riding in your work it should pay back its premium.

It's difficult to compare such a unique laptop to any of our regular units, even where there are similarities in performance or equipment. In the end, the primary selling point of rugged laptops is their construction and durability, and as such, I have to compare to the best and most recent rugged laptops. In terms of pure performance, the E6420-ATG can easily compete against the most rugged laptops out there, like the Dell E6420 XFR, without much trouble. If budgetary constraints enter into your decision making process, you might want to instead opt for the business rugged HP Elitebook 8740w ($1,999 direct, 4 stars), but when you want uncompromising durability, the E6420-ATG is the system you'll want to get you through the storm.

There's no doubting that the Dell Latitude E6420 ATG is a tough customer. However, if you want to up the specifications, you're going to need to up the financial outlay. As ever when this is the case, you could move away from that base pricepoint rather quickly.

The Dell Latitude E6420 ATG is a semi-rugged laptop that offers exceptional power and battery life and a more durable design than your typical business machine. However, at $3,012, this notebook is quite expensive. In fact, for the price delta between the ATG model and the regular Latitude E6420, you could get a whole other non-ruggedized E6420, so you have to really need the extra protection this laptop offers. We also wish the E6420 ATG did a better job of shrugging off our water spill test. Overall, though, the E6420 ATG is a viable option for workers who are hard on their machines.

However you configure it, though, the Dell Latitude E6420 AGT is clearly meant for corporate users who want a machine that can not only survive rough-and-tumble conditions but also crunch serious numbers over a full day on the road, whether a power outlet is handy or not. Unless you need such a seriously sturdy, powerful laptop (and you don't mind lugging it around), you can probably find acceptable alternatives (including other Dell models) for a lot less money.

If you can look beyond the cost and the weight, what you'll find is a surprisingly durable semi-rugged notebook that can survive just about anything you throw at it (or anything you throw it into) and has the performance and battery life to do just about anything a mobile professional needs to do in the field.

The Dell Latitude E6420 XFR is made for the off-roading field worker. Its screen is readable in direct sunlight, and the inclusion of smart features like a backlit keyboard and WiMAX—not to mention its rugged form factor—make this a must-have. However, you'll want to make sure a wealthy enterprise is backing the payment, as $5,612 isn't exactly a consumer-friendly price-point.

The Dell Latitude E6420 XFR combines extreme durability with strong overall performance and long battery life, exactly what demanding rugged notebook shoppers are looking for. The only thing that keeps this tank of a laptop from earning our Editors' Choice award is its above-average running temperature. Some may prefer the Panasonic Toughbook 31, which offers a sealed all-weather design that can also handle 6-foot drops. However, the Toughbook doesn't have a Core i7 option like the Dell and it weighs over a pound more despite featuring a smaller 13-inch screen. While the $5,612 price is steep, the E6420 XFR is an excellent choice for the military, those who work on oil rigs, or anyone looking for a highly durable, high-performance notebook for field use.

Dell:
