Une bête de somme !

Après avoir regardé de plus près l’AMD Threadripper 2950X, nous passons maintenant au Threadripper 2970WX. Le 2970WX possède 24 cœurs et peut exécuter jusqu’à 48 cœurs logiques, ce qui fait 8 cœurs et 16 cœurs logiques de plus que le 2950X. Mais celui-ci possède une fréquence plus élevée de 500 MHz de base et de 200 MHz en boost, mais avec une enveloppe thermique supérieure de 70 W. Un des gros avantages du Threadripper est sa rétrocompatibilité. Toutes les cartes-mères X399 sont ainsi compatibles avec les nouveaux APU Threadripper, à condition de faire une mise à jour du BIOS. Mais nous conseillons de vérifier si votre fabricant de carte-mère vend des dissipateurs VRM rétrofitables, les Threadripper 2970WX et 2990WX ayant une enveloppe thermique de 250 W, qui fera bien plus chauffer les VRM que lorsqu’elles sont couplées avec des APU 180 W.

La 2e génération d’APU Threadripper amène pour la première fois des processeurs à 32 cœurs et 64 threads au sein d'équipements grand public. Le Threadripper 2970WX est un APU pour station de travail qui se rendra très utile à ceux qui utilisent souvent des logiciels optimisés pour le multicœur. Mais nous conseillons de regarder ailleurs si vous cherchez avant tout un processeur pour le jeu, les performances monocœur de l'APU ne justifiant pas son tarif de presque 1 300 $.

Le Threadripper 2970 est avant tout destiné aux stations de travail. Les résultats des tests reflètent cette orientation, l’APU étant à son aise dans les tests multicœurs. Presque 1 300 $ pour des résultats monocœurs à la traîne, cela pourra en rebuter certains, mais le Threadripper 2970WX est bien moins cher que ses concurrents Intel, tout en ayant de bien meilleures performances multicœurs. À notre avis, le prix élevé est justifié.

Les professionnels de la vidéo ou de la photo apprécieront la puissance de cet AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX. De même, il est à son aise pour faire tourner plusieurs machines virtuelles en même temps, ce qui en fait un bon candidat pour les serveurs. Au final, cet APU est une bête de course pour le multicœur, mais ses performances monocœur en retrait et son prix de lancement le rendent peu polyvalent ; il sera plus à son aise dans une station de travail ou comme processeur pour serveur, où il peut tirer pleinement profit du nombre élevé de cœurs physiques et logiques.
