There are some great things about the iPhone 8 including the addition of wireless charging, 64GB storage as standard and a fast A11 Bionic processor. However, this all comes at a higher price and everything else is largely the same so we can't imagine or recommend iPhone 7 users upgrading. Those on an older device like an iPhone 6 or older will experience a much bigger change.

The iPhone 8 is a good phone – very good in certain respects – but it also feels like it was the forgotten child. The iPhone X, with its edge-to-edge OLED display, shouldn’t be an exclusive £1000 device; it should be the phone that Apple puts head-to-head against the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the upcoming Google Pixel 2.

I keep telling people to go for the iPhone 7 instead of the iPhone 8, simply because of the marginal difference in features and significant difference in price, and that verdict unfortunately hasn’t changed much. Granted, the iPhone 8 performs much better with a better processor and camera system, it supports wireless charging and has better battery life than the iPhone 7, but you aren’t missing out on essential features if you already own an iPhone 7. As a matter of fact, the iPhone 8 is made for those looking to upgrade from the iPhone 6 or older, and doesn’t want to pay an extra premium for Animojis and Face ID, it may be dated, but it is still a decent product.

The iPhone 8 is an excellent phone, boosted by the addition of wireless charging and Apple's new A11 Bionic CPU. Beyond that, however, it's an incremental update over last year's iPhone 7, and the handset's large bezels and three-year-old design mean it does feel somewhat dated compared to the likes of the Galaxy S8 and Pixel 2.

While many people have complained that there are not enough changes in the iPhone 8’s camera as compared to the iPhone 7’s (which is true as the shooting experience and the specs on both the device remains largely the same), we would say that in terms of performance, the iPhone 8 is significantly better. It cannot be denied that the company has not taken a super long jump from where it was with its previous model in spec terms- many expected dual cameras and portrait mode and maybe even dual front cameras – but even then, we would say that this does qualify as one of the best smartphone cameras out there. Yes, it is single lens but is good enough to give those dual lenses a run for their money. And yes, we will be comparing it with the iPhone 8 Plus. Stay tuned.

The iPhone 8 is just as impressive and just as disappointing as we’ve been expecting it to be. What frustrates me with the device is that even if Apple went with the same, three-year old design, it could have put in a lot more effort into the features and finish of the phone.

There are several arguments to make for the iPhone 8, which we’ve laid out in a few different cases. The big one is you get a home button with Touch ID, which has been more or less a part of the iPhone from the beginning. But the future—at least as Apple sees it—exists without a home button and chunky bezels.

The iPhone 8 comes in two storage variants 64GB and 256GB, which are priced at Rs 64,000 and Rs 77,000. A price point where it has stiff competition from the likes of Samsung Galaxy S8 and HTC U11. But, the main question about the latest iPhones is that whether you should buy the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus or wait for the iPhone X. After using the iPhone 8 we can safely say that this is a solid smartphone. However, if you've an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, chances are the iPhone 8 might not impress you. The iPhone 8, at $699 and $849, suffers from one major problem: the iPhone 7 is now $549. And the 8 just isn't $150 better—yet. The major improvements here are wireless charging, which I still think is basically a curiosity, and the A11 processor. The A11 is amazing, but there just isn't much that stresses it right now other than augmented reality, and if you want the best augmented-reality phone, you should go with the 8 Plus or the X.

Overall, the iPhone 8 is the best iPhone available today. Is it good? Yes, it’s very good. However, it’s not for everyone. If you want the very latest, or already have an iPhone 7, then the iPhone X is really where your focus should be. There’s no denying that the X is at the cutting edge with its edge-to-edge OLED 5.8 inch screen, virtual home button and facial recognition. However, if you’re upgrading from an iPhone 5 or 6, then you’ll be very happy with an 8’s excellent camera, clever photo modes, stunning wide colour display, wireless charging and impressive augmented reality-ready capabilities.

The iPhone 8 is not radical, and there are plenty of options in the Android space that, on paper, offer more for less. Also, the design is perhaps trying for the smartphone equivalent of the Porsche 911, but one man’s ‘timeless’ is another’s ‘dated’ – especially in the smartphone world of edge-to-edge Android devices (and soon, the iPhone X).

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus own the dubious distinction of being the shortest reigning Apple flagship smartphones, being surpassed a mere twenty minutes later by the iPhone X. While we haven’t retested every smartphone using our new protocols, we have retested some of the best, and the Apple iPhone 8 improves over all of them, including the Google Pixel and the HTC U11 — the two best performers until now. Apple has brought some impressive image processing technology to bear on the images that the iPhone 8’s relatively small sensor captures, and it shows in better exposure, improved dynamic range, and lower noise than the iPhone 7. Only its bigger and more expensive dual-camera sibling, the Apple iPhone 8 Plus, tops it on our DxOMark Mobile charts.

After spending a week with the 8, I can’t think of a single compelling reason to upgrade from an iPhone 7. The 7 is still extremely fast, offers virtually the same design in a lighter package with a bigger battery, and will get almost every feature of the 8 with iOS 11. If you really want Qi wireless charging, you can get a slim $15 case that supports it. And if you’re dying for Portrait Lighting, there are tons of photo apps in the App Store that offer similar effects. Of course, if you're upgrading from anything older than an iPhone 7, the improvements in the camera and the overall speed of the phone are going to really impress you.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how the iPhone X hits Apple’s bottom line. If early reviews are any indication, the iPhone 8 simply doesn’t capture interest the way previous devices did. It’s not bad, and if you’ve been happy with previous iPhones, you’ll be happy with this one. But it’s not seen as moving the bar the way the iPhone X does.

When I first picked up the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, I immediately decided they were actually just the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus. I was wrong: They're definitely much more than that. They're just saddled with a less exciting design. If you subscribe to the maxim that it's what's inside that really counts, the 8 and 8 Plus are big improvements. They pack more storage, great cameras, improved software and absolutely first-rate performance into some highly familiar packages. The iPhone X will continue to suck the air out of the room for the foreseeable future, but one thing has become clear after my week of testing: They might not have the X's style, but the 8 and 8 Plus are truly excellent phones that won't let Apple die-hards and new customers down.
