Don’t let the iPhone 8 name fool you – this is very much the iPhone 7S, an incremental upgrade on 2016’s 4.7-inch iPhone 7 with a few additions here and there, but nothing to really wow.

There are some great things about the iPhone 8 including the addition of wireless charging, 64GB storage as standard and a fast A11 Bionic processor. However, this all comes at a higher price and everything else is largely the same so we can't imagine or recommend iPhone 7 users upgrading. Those on an older device like an iPhone 6 or older will experience a much bigger change.

The iPhone X, with its edge-to-edge OLED display, shouldn’t be an exclusive £1000 device; it should be the phone that Apple puts head-to-head against the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the upcoming Google Pixel 2.

The iPhone 8 is a gorgeous, sleek and incredibly powerful smartphone, there’s no doubt about it. The A11 Bionic chipset provided the highest benchmark scores ever, leaving Android rivals in the dirt, and the low-light camera performance is a marked improvement on the iPhone 7.

I keep telling people to go for the iPhone 7 instead of the iPhone 8, simply because of the marginal difference in features and significant difference in price, and that verdict unfortunately hasn’t changed much. Granted, the iPhone 8 performs much better with a better processor and camera system, it supports wireless charging and has better battery life than the iPhone 7, but you aren’t missing out on essential features if you already own an iPhone 7. As a matter of fact, the iPhone 8 is made for those looking to upgrade from the iPhone 6 or older, and doesn’t want to pay an extra premium for Animojis and Face ID, it may be dated, but it is still a decent product.

The iPhone 8 is an excellent phone, boosted by the addition of wireless charging and Apple's new A11 Bionic CPU. Beyond that, however, it's an incremental update over last year's iPhone 7, and the handset's large bezels and three-year-old design mean it does feel somewhat dated compared to the likes of the Galaxy S8 and Pixel 2.

While many people have complained that there are not enough changes in the iPhone 8’s camera as compared to the iPhone 7’s (which is true as the shooting experience and the specs on both the device remains largely the same), we would say that in terms of performance, the iPhone 8 is significantly better. It cannot be denied that the company has not taken a super long jump from where it was with its previous model in spec terms- many expected dual cameras and portrait mode and maybe even dual front cameras – but even then, we would say that this does qualify as one of the best smartphone cameras out there. Yes, it is single lens but is good enough to give those dual lenses a run for their money. And yes, we will be comparing it with the iPhone 8 Plus. Stay tuned.

The iPhone 8 is just as impressive and just as disappointing as we’ve been expecting it to be. What frustrates me with the device is that even if Apple went with the same, three-year old design, it could have put in a lot more effort into the features and finish of the phone.

Take a faster processor, a slightly updated design, an improved camera, and some new charging tricks and it all adds up to the iPhone 8. But is it enough to persuade iPhone loyalists to stick with Apple? Or what about those Android users who are tempted by Apple's ecosystem and ease of use?

Today? Well, the iPhone 8 might as well be the best iPhone for the right users. Cheaper than the X and smaller than the Plus - meaning it's one of the best premium compacts around. You're not quite that kind of user? Well, we guess we'll see you around neXt month then.

There are several arguments to make for the iPhone 8, which we’ve laid out in a few different cases. The big one is you get a home button with Touch ID, which has been more or less a part of the iPhone from the beginning. But the future—at least as Apple sees it—exists without a home button and chunky bezels.

So that’s where the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus enter the picture: those who don’t want to be early adopters of the iPhone X will automatically look into getting them instead. Do they bring huge new features to the table? No, but they’re iPhones people know and love over the years.

The iPhone 8 is a good phone – very good in certain respects – but it also feels like it was the forgotten child. The iPhone X, with its edge-to-edge OLED display, shouldn’t be an exclusive £1000 device; it should be the phone that Apple puts head-to-head against the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the upcoming Google Pixel 2.

The iPhone 8 comes in two storage variants 64GB and 256GB, which are priced at Rs 64,000 and Rs 77,000. A price point where it has stiff competition from the likes of Samsung Galaxy S8 and HTC U11. But, the main question about the latest iPhones is that whether you should buy the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus or wait for the iPhone X. After using the iPhone 8 we can safely say that this is a solid smartphone. However, if you've an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, chances are the iPhone 8 might not impress you. Those who have the iPhone 6S or less, we feel that the iPhone 8 is an impressive upgrade. It has a lot going for it - a powerful processor, better display, enhanced camera and wireless charging.

The iPhone 8, at $699 and $849, suffers from one major problem: the iPhone 7 is now $549. And the 8 just isn't $150 better—yet. The major improvements here are wireless charging, which I still think is basically a curiosity, and the A11 processor. The A11 is amazing, but there just isn't much that stresses it right now other than augmented reality, and if you want the best augmented-reality phone, you should go with the 8 Plus or the X.

Overall, my pick between the two new iPhones is the iPhone 8 Plus. It gives you a significantly bigger screen than the iPhone 8, longer battery life and more versatile dual cameras for just $100 more. The regular iPhone 8 is good, but 4.7 inches just doesn’t cut it for me anymore.

Reviewing the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus is a little like a kid reviewing Christmas Eve. Sure, you’ll get a day off school and probably some chocolate too, but you can’t forget the main event is just around the corner. The smartphone world always has one eye on what’s in the pipeline, but Apple has managed to overshadow itself most comprehensively with the iPhone X.

Overall, the iPhone 8 is the best iPhone available today. Is it good? Yes, it’s very good. However, it’s not for everyone. If you want the very latest, or already have an iPhone 7, then the iPhone X is really where your focus should be. There’s no denying that the X is at the cutting edge with its edge-to-edge OLED 5.8 inch screen, virtual home button and facial recognition. However, if you’re upgrading from an iPhone 5 or 6, then you’ll be very happy with an 8’s excellent camera, clever photo modes, stunning wide colour display, wireless charging and impressive augmented reality-ready capabilities.

In the end, assuming you're properly educated on all of Apple's 2017 iPhone options, you shouldn't feel bad about going with the iPhone 8. But maybe don't be afraid to try something new, even if that means stepping outside your comfort zone a little.

The iPhone 8 is not radical, and there are plenty of options in the Android space that, on paper, offer more for less. Also, the design is perhaps trying for the smartphone equivalent of the Porsche 911, but one man’s ‘timeless’ is another’s ‘dated’ – especially in the smartphone world of edge-to-edge Android devices (and soon, the iPhone X).

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus own the dubious distinction of being the shortest reigning Apple flagship smartphones, being surpassed a mere twenty minutes later by the iPhone X. While we haven’t retested every smartphone using our new protocols, we have retested some of the best, and the Apple iPhone 8 improves over all of them, including the Google Pixel and the HTC U11 — the two best performers until now. Apple has brought some impressive image processing technology to bear on the images that the iPhone 8’s relatively small sensor captures, and it shows in better exposure, improved dynamic range, and lower noise than the iPhone 7. Only its bigger and more expensive dual-camera sibling, the Apple iPhone 8 Plus, tops it on our DxOMark Mobile charts.

After spending a week with the 8, I can’t think of a single compelling reason to upgrade from an iPhone 7. The 7 is still extremely fast, offers virtually the same design in a lighter package with a bigger battery, and will get almost every feature of the 8 with iOS 11. If you really want Qi wireless charging, you can get a slim $15 case that supports it. And if you’re dying for Portrait Lighting, there are tons of photo apps in the App Store that offer similar effects. Of course, if you're upgrading from anything older than an iPhone 7, the improvements in the camera and the overall speed of the phone are going to really impress you.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how the iPhone X hits Apple’s bottom line. If early reviews are any indication, the iPhone 8 simply doesn’t capture interest the way previous devices did. When I first picked up the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, I immediately decided they were actually just the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus. I was wrong: They're definitely much more than that. They're just saddled with a less exciting design. If you subscribe to the maxim that it's what's inside that really counts, the 8 and 8 Plus are big improvements. They pack more storage, great cameras, improved software and absolutely first-rate performance into some highly familiar packages. The iPhone X will continue to suck the air out of the room for the foreseeable future, but one thing has become clear after my week of testing: They might not have the X's style, but the 8 and 8 Plus are truly excellent phones that won't let Apple die-hards and new customers down.

Big sibling, small improvement. As with its smaller sibling, the Apple iPhone 8 Plus does not have many new features. We get a slightly revised chassis, now with a glass rear panel, as well as the new A11 chip. However, small optimizations improve the iPhone in many areas.

A solid iPhone, but a clear evolution from previous Plus models. Compared to the iPhone X it's unexciting, but it offers the far better experience over the iPhone 8.

The iPhone 8 Plus is a hard phone to recommend. Sure, it's powerful, but so is every other flagship - and with a dated design and huge body, the 8 Plus is lagging behind. Throw in the fact that the wireless charging is slow, the fast wired charging costs you extra, and flagship camera feature Portrait Lighting just doesn't work well enough yet, and the 8 Plus is a tough sell.

Exciting times are indeed ahead as the iPhone X's DNA is reflected in the iPhone lineup later this year. For it's flagship devices in 2018, for those of us who are tied into the Apple eco-system, we'll be presented with another fait accompli from Apple having to accept that gestures and Face ID will be part of our lives.

The iPhone 8 Plus is a 7S Plus in all but name. There are plenty of improvements, yes, but it feels like Apple’s real focus this year has been on the iPhone X. That just isn’t good enough when you consider that the iPhone 8 Plus costs £799/$799.

So then, like always, this simply winds down to one thing; iOS. No matter how great the hardware is, the software can still be a major turn off to a ton of people. It’s much more restricted, and if you’re not going all in on Apple’s (expensive) ecosystem, it can offer a lesser experience depending on what you use your phone for.

The iPhone 8 Plus is a great device for those who love the phablet side of the iPhone. And there are many of those out there. It is many things, but a bridesmaid to the iPhone X it is not. Would we recommend it to those with a 7 Plus? Definitely. Would we recommend it over the Pixel 2 XL? We would, notwithstanding the Google phone’s photographic muscle. The Galaxy Note 8 offers much tougher competition thanks to its S-Pen stylus. What of the iPhone X itself? That will be revealed in our review in the coming days. But the very fact that it can hold its own against those two Android superphones in spite of a design that looks more 2014 than 2017 makes one thing clear:

The iPhone 8 Plus is a 7S Plus in all but name. There are plenty of improvements, yes, but it feels like Apple’s real focus this year has been on the iPhone X. That just isn’t good enough when you consider that the iPhone 8 Plus costs £799/$799.

The Apple iPhone 8 Plus is a good phone, but is it as good as similarly priced rivals? Is it even as good as those phones costing much less money? Objectively, the answer to both these questions is no. It’s incredibly fast, has great cameras and it’s dust- and water-resistant – but it’s not the best you can buy.

The iPhone 8 Plus pricing starts from Rs 73,000 for the 64 GB variant and Rs 86,000 for the 256 GB variant. But online retailers are already offering discounts on the iPhone 8 Plus thanks to the festive offers. We tested the 256 GB variant of the iPhone 8 Plus. Come to think of it the iPhone X is going to start retailing at Rs 89,000. This generation, the iPhone 8 Plus is not competing with any Android phone, but it is competing with its own elder sibling — the iPhone X.

The iPhone 8 Plus is a superb phone and if the iPhone X didn’t exist I’d be perfectly content with it and recommend it without hesitation. But the iPhone X does exist and spending the extra $200 on it means that you get a phone that is easier to handle and has a better display. If you’re paying for the iPhone X on an installment plan, the price difference works out to just 27 cents per day. If you can’t swallow the price difference and really want the iPhone X, I suggest taking a close look at your wireless bill and find a way to make up the difference by downgrading some services that you may not need.

Okay, so they’re not the all-singing, all-dancing iPhone X, but these phones are both worth moving up to, especially if you are coming from an iPhone 6s or older handset. However, I’d say there’s enough upgrade here to make it worthwhile from an iPhone 7, too.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are the textbook Apple incremental upgrades that many have become blasé to, but are undeniably and fundamentally excellent phones. The iPhone 8 Plus is independently verified as the most powerful smartphone on the market and it's allied to a great operating system and a buzzing ecosystem. It's refinement in a box, with the price tag to match.

You get many of the X's features: wireless charging (thanks to the glass back), which is convenient and fun, albeit a little slower than charging with the bundled 5W wired charger; the A11 Bionic chip, which is absurdly fast, and makes this device a mobile gaming beast; Portrait Lighting, a spotty and inconsistent software feature, but one that sometimes produces highly flattering, professional shots with little effort.

OK, so here's the deal. If you've got an iPhone 6s or earlier, you should totally upgrade. If you're on the iPhone Upgrade Program or some other plan where you swap out your phone every year, you're good to go. If you bought an iPhone 7 Plus, well, probably not.

So, on the whole, the iPhone 8 Plus is definitely a good phone, it is just very boring. Yes there is a new camera, and yes it is very fast – but with the iPhone X on the horizon, I know which device I’d rather wait for. If you want the latest Apple phone now, or you like the ‘tried and trusted’ design, then the iPhone 8 Plus will serve you well. However, the iPhone X looks to bring something new to the table – something the 8 Plus is definitely lacking.

We'd be lying if I said the iPhone 8 Plus had enough to offer anyone looking to upgrade from the 7 Plus. Especially given its £800 price tag, and that the 7 Plus has dropped to (an albeit still pricey) £669 since the iPhone 8 launch. It is worth the investment if you’re looking to jump from the 7, and is definitely worth the leap from iPhone 6 and 6s ranges. The main issue, and it’s the same one that raises its head every year, is that you have to switch to Android to get a better phone. If you’re willing to do so, the obvious competitor to the 8 Plus is the Galaxy Note 8. It comes with dual-cameras and a larger 6.3in AMOLED screen squeezed into a body that’s only slightly bigger than the iPhone 8 Plus, but comes at a small premium, costing around £820.

Yes, as I said I would buy this phone just for its camera. In fact, the sheer dependability and performance of this phone is good enough to make it a top contender in the premium segment. However, if you are already using an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, the jump might not make much sense. Also, if price is not really a consideration, then it might make better sense to wait for the iPhone X. Till then this is the best phone you can buy.

The iPhone 8 Plus is an interesting beast. It’s the safety phone. Hopefully representing the last of its kind, because Apple is obviously ready to move on. Apple is also a victim of their own success though. The transition to the iPhone X will take a little time. Progress on software and services cannot wait for the all-screen iPhone to be the norm.

So, is it worth buying the 8 Plus? Personally, I’d go for the Plus-size model over the iPhone 8, since its dual-lens camera makes light work of making any photograph look amazing. For most people, deciding between the two models will probably come down to the devices’ footprints. Just as in previous years, you’ll need to weigh whether you prefer the one-handed ease of the iPhone 8 or the giant screen and longer battery life of the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone 8 Plus is a big, chunky phablet that stands out like a sore thumb in the crowded marketplace filled with sleeker rivals. It’s massive, and not in a good way, in an era where a big screen doesn’t have to mean a big phone. That design was ok in 2014, not too bad by 2015, bad by 2016 and downright rubbish in 2017.

Sure, 7 Plus owners have no real reason to upgrade; the support for wireless charging, updated design and tweaked camera tech are all great, yet far from a good reason to spunk up hundreds of pounds for this device. If you’re still rocking an older iPhone however, or tempted to swing over to Apple’s vine, then the 8 Plus is bound to satisfy.

Throughout the review of the Apple iPhone 8 Plus we kept asking ourselves, does it makes sense to ditch the iPhone 7 Plus and skip to this one? The answer was apparent, it can wait. Since we already know that the better iPhone - the Apple iPhone X (ten) is around the corner. With the price tag of Rs 86,000 (256 GB version), one can add couple of thousands and go for the uber-hot iPhone X. Nevertheless, if you are using iPhone 6S/6S Plus or lesser, picking up the iPhone 8 Plus does make a lot of sense.

As I said, the one significant change here is the glass back. And this is needed to ensure the phone can make the best of wireless charging which Apple is ushering in with the iPhone 8 series. While Apple does not have a wireless charger of its own yet, I got to use the Belkin Boost Up wireless charging pad. Yes, it is quite convenient as you just need to place the phone on top for it to start charging — you need to be careful and keep it back in the middle for this to work. However, I found that wirelessly it takes a bit more time to charge that via the regular mode. Also, I am pretty sure you wont be carrying the wireless charger around in your office bag. This is meant to kept in one place: on your office table or chest of drawers and doesn’t really have mobile intentions.

This is meant to kept in one place: on your office table or chest of drawers and doesn’t really have mobile intentions.

So that’s where the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus enter the picture: those who don’t want to be early adopters of the iPhone X will automatically look into getting them instead. Do they bring huge new features to the table? No, but they’re iPhones people know and love over the years.

There is a shadow hanging over the 8 series and we guess the Plus could be hit worse than the regular 8. In a typical Apple year, the iPhone 8 Plus would've been the better twin. This time around, it's the middle triplet. We'll know soon enough how bad this can be. But the worst thing is, the imminent iPhone X is making it harder for everybody to notice how good the iPhone 8 Plus really is.

The iPhone 8 Plus is a 7S Plus in all but name. There are plenty of improvements, yes, but it feels like Apple’s real focus this year has been on the iPhone X. That just isn’t good enough when you consider that the iPhone 8 Plus costs £799/$799.

Overall, the iPhone 8 Plus is Apple's everyman phone. It's the perfect big phone for the masses; for the people who don't need a future-facing face-reading smartphone; for those who want that large scale familiarity and known strengths that will get the job done. For those people, the iPhone 8 delivers in droves.

The iPhone 8 Plus is, without a doubt, one of Apple’s most powerful smartphones to date. Although sporting a new number in its name, it still has a strong affinity to the iPhone 7 Plus and we can’t help but compare. That’s because the iPhone 8 Plus is basically the upgraded version of its predecessor, or if we follow the company’s nomenclature, this is could have been the iPhone 7s Plus.

Bottom line: if you prefer your iPhone with this more traditional screen shape, or just can't stomach the idea of a $1000 smartphone, go ahead and dive right into the iPhone 8 Plus. But if you can wait just a little longer so you can get a chance to see what the iPhone X can really do, you'll be prepared to make one very informed decision about which vision for the future of Apple smartphones you want to support.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus own the dubious distinction of being the shortest reigning Apple flagship smartphones, being surpassed a mere twenty minutes later by the iPhone X. While they're both great phones, they're overshadowed by the X, and it doesn't help that the 8's biggest new feature, wireless charging, is something we've seen in Android smartphones for years now.

Overall, the Apple iPhone 8 Plus is an excellent choice for the needs of nearly every smartphone photographer. It features outstanding image quality, zoom for those needing to get closer to their subjects, and an industry-leading Portrait mode for artistic efforts. It is at the top of our scoring charts in nearly every category — and in particular, its advanced software allows it to do an amazing job of capturing high-dynamic range scenes and images in which it can recognize faces.

It’s not bad, and if you’ve been happy with previous iPhones, you’ll be happy with this one. But it’s not seen as moving the bar the way the iPhone X does.

The iPhone X got all the headlines but in many ways the iPhone 8 Plus is a more appealing upgrade. You get many of the X's features: wireless charging (thanks to the glass back), the A11 Bionic chip, Portrait Lighting. And you don't lose the Home button, which means you don't need to relearn the interface and you can carry on using Touch ID. It's also cheaper - and you don't have to wait as long to buy it.
