The HD 10 is more powerful than ever, has a decent Full HD screen and a good amount of storage for the money. Hands-free Alexa is a nice addition, too. If you can live with the slightly limited selection of apps compared to an Android tablet, it’s a good deal.

At a lot less than the basic iPad, the Amazon Fire HD 10 certainly has pricing on its side. It can't really be argued with as a route to getting a decent tablet, but it's nowhere near the best you can get. The core specs are okay (aside from the cameras, which are terrible) and if you just need a tablet for streaming, shopping and basic browsing then it's a decent option.

Among Amazon's own tablets, deciding which to buy is a bit harder. For less money, the smaller Fire HD 8 and Fire 7 get you access to the same ecosystem of apps and content for even less money. The HD 8 is our Editors' Choice for affordable mid-size slates. The HD 10, while more expensive, boasts a bigger, sharper screen, a more powerful processor, and more RAM. We think that makes it a justifiable upgrade if you want the larger display. It also makes it our Editors' Choice for low-cost, big-screen tablets.

But if you can deal with that element of the Fire HD 10’s personality, you’ll find its audio and video performance well beyond the standard a £150 price tag suggests. It's a fine budget buy. If it's discounted for Amazon Prime Day 2019, which is highly likely, we wouldn't hesitate to chuck it straight into that Amazon shopping basket of yours.

If you want a cheap, durable device to play and consume Amazon’s vast array of Prime content then the Amazon Fire HD 10 will fit your needs. It isn’t revolutionary or overly interesting, but it will get the job done. If you’re not deep inside the Prime ecosystem, or simply want a tablet that can be productive, then you should look elsewhere.

Of all the affordable tablets we've tested, the Fire HD 10 packs both the best screen and the fastest performance. Unfortunately, we were hoping its larger size could enable more battery life, and we're not exactly giddy to spend so much on a slate that can't use Google apps.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is the best big tablet from Amazon that costs more than one third the price of an iPad while on sale. The Amazon Fire HD isn’t so much an Android tablet, as a subsidized Amazon consumption device. If you don’t have an Amazon Prime account and don’t plan on getting one, it’s very difficult to recommend the Amazon Fire HD to you. It’s still enormously good value as a tablet, but you’re probably going want a more pure Android experience with out of the box access to Google Play store, which you won’t find here.

The Fire HD 10 is a glimmer of hope in the barren Android tablet wasteland. It fixes everything we didn't like about the last model, while dropping down to an incredibly low price for a 10.1-inch slate. It's just a shame that such a well-crafted Android device can't run Google's services. As it stands, though, the Fire HD 10 is still the cheap slate to beat this year.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 takes the experience of the smaller Fire tablets and boosts it. The size of this device is perhaps a little uncharacteristic now, as larger tablets have generally fallen from favour - unless they are made by Apple. The Fire HD 10 fulfills Amazon's simple plan for its tablets: Like other Fires, it's an inexpensive ($149.99 with lock screen ads) way to consume your Amazon content. At first glance, it doesn't appear to be the barn-burning deal that the Fire HD 8 is, but it still offers plenty of bang for your buck. You get a sharp 1080p display, solid overall performance, and an easy-to-use UI that includes parental controls and Alexa voice assistant integration. The Fire HD 10 is simply the best 10-inch tablet for the price, earning it our Editors' Choice.

The Amazon Fire line is designed for entertainment, so if you're looking for a tablet that can function as a robust work machine, it's not for you. That said, if you want an inexpensive tablet that comes with free 24/7 remote access support, easy access to media and internet, and built-in Alexa, the Fire HD 10 fits the bill. This tablet is ideal for business travelers who want a secondary device to make flights a little more enjoyable and daily life a little more convenient.

But these initial thoughts are based on a brief hands-on. We'll deliver our final verdict around the 11th October launch date, but if you’re already convinced you want one, the Fire HD 10 is available to pre-order now.

There’s no reason to change that mark this time round – in fact it’s moved further ahead of the competition thanks to a couple of upgrades that really matter (faster processor and better battery life) and a couple that aren’t so important but are still welcome (USB-C and the kick-stand).

The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition is fun to use and feels more premium than the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition, shortening the quality gap between the iPad and other tablets for kids. While you're relieved of iPad-style costs, $199 does seem pricey for a children's device. But the included warranty, free year of FreeTime and cute protective case add to its value.

The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition works as rugged, inexpensive backseat or couchside entertainment for small children. Don't discount that. I don't have a car, but Toca Boca apps saved both me and entire train cars worth of people during subway delays when my daughter was younger. That alone is worth something.

It's hard to hate the Fire HD 10. Yes, it costs $100 more than the popular Fire 7, but I've got them sitting next to each other in front of me, and I'd never give the cheaper one as a gift to a relative, but rather invest a little more to make sure their favorite TV shows look better and their tablet lasts for longer.

That the hardware is so capable for the cash highlights how far behind Amazon’s apps and games libraries are though. Too many top Android games aren’t available, including PUBG, Asphalt 9 and Call of Duty: Mobile. Capable techies may be able to “hack” Google Play onto this tablet, but that crowd and the usual Amazon Fire tablet audience are worlds apart.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is the best 10-inch tablet you can buy for $150. Although it costs nearly twice as much as the $80 Fire HD 8, it's money well spent for snappier performance, a higher-resolution display, and nearly double battery life. There simply aren't any appealing Android tablets out there right now at this size and price, so your next best best is the iPad, which offers better performance and more apps, but it costs more than twice as much. There still a market for a cheap tablet? For years, Amazon has argued that the answer is yes, with its consistent lineup of low-powered — and low priced — Fire tablets. The latest of these is the newly updated Fire HD 10, which looks to make the case that there’s room in the market for a larger tablet that isn’t an iPad. But does the $149 Fire HD 10 do enough to justify saving the money compared to Apple’s increasingly cheap entry-level iPads?

A new port here, a battery improvement there, a software feature on top. It’s not a massive change over Fire HD 10 Tablets that have preceded it, but nevertheless 2019’s slate is looking better than any Amazon has put out before. The jump to USB-C is smart, the price remains attractive, and, as the years have rolled on, the Fire OS skin has become more palatable, even if it remains a walled-garden into Amazon’s world. Given the price tag, you could do much, much worse. Keep an eye out for our final verdict soon.

There really is no other way to go if you’re looking for a low-cost 10-inch tablet. Amazon has this end of the market well and truly cornered. If you can live with the fact that it’s a very clever vessel for selling you more Amazon products, then there really are very few reasons not to buy one. And if you would be happy with buying a smaller screen size instead (and saving some money in the process), then you should head over to our review of the 7-inch Amazon Fire 7 tablet review, a What Hi-Fi? 2022 Award winner.

In closing, the affordable price means that the Fire 7 Tablet will definitely have performance limitations. If all you need is a basic tablet for media consumption, entertainment and a casual game every now and then, then this might be suitable for you. The solid construction, availability, and pricing will make this a nice piece of tech for little kids, or someone who just needs an inexpensive entertainment device. Keep in mind that it also come with ads, so you have to pay a bit of extra if you wanna get rid of the ads altogether. However, power-users and enthusiasts might want to avoid this though, and spend a bit more for Apple’s compact 6th-Generation iPad Mini, or Samsung’s Galaxy Tablets, which have much nicer designs and better software features. But for the bare essentials, the Amazon Fire 7 Tablet is here for your consideration.

Samsung has nailed the hardware and concept of this series in the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The look and feel of this device are great while bringing its cutting-edge form factor to consumers. I just don’t know that it’s a one-to-one replacement for the modern smartphone. There are just enough compromises and drawbacks that make it hard to recommend unless you just want the ability to fold a phone. The Z Flip 3 doesn’t hold the same value add as its larger sibling. If you are a potential buyer who still wants this device, you can snag it from your local AT&T right now. The cost is subject to current discounts and promotions if leasing, but the full price will set you back $1,000.

In truth, the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) isn’t a huge upgrade. But then, in the absence of much serious competition, it doesn’t really need to be. No other low-cost tablet comes anywhere near it in terms of sheer value and, with a small uptick in both performance and stamina plus a reduction in slenderness and weight – and no price increase – the Amazon Fire HD 10 retains its status as our Best Buy 10in tablet. If you’re in the market for a tablet with a big screen but you don’t want to splash out on an iPad then it’s a very good choice indeed.

I sound like a hypocrite with the rating I just slapped down, but if you want or need what each part of the bundle provides, why the heck not? Buy the darn Fire tablet for playing videos or reading ebooks. Maybe you'll use the wireless keyboard with it. Maybe you'll pull it from the folio and use it with something else. That's the magic of Bluetooth after all. The same thing goes with the Microsoft 365 subscription: who said you had to use it exclusively with the Fire HD 10? We're not the Fire OS Police (ha). You might as well use Office on something more responsive. If you aren’t familiar with Fire tablets, they can provide the same basic functionality as your smartphone on a larger screen. And with Amazon’s brand at the forefront, there are certain things I’d do here that I wouldn’t on most other tablets like read an ebook or watch Prime Video.

There really is no other way to go if you’re looking for a low cost 10-inch tablet. Amazon has this end of the market well and truly cornered. If you can live with the fact that it’s a very clever vessel for selling you more Amazon products, then there really are few reasons not to buy one.

The parts don't make the whole that Amazon intended to sell you on: that a Fire tablet is meant for work. But if all this is about driving sales where they don't exist today, the unintended, maybe even perverse incentives each item presents may attract some people. And some's better than none.

Amazon’s lineup of Fire tablets has settled into a familiar routine: they are available in small, medium, and large; they are priced far lower than comparable iPads; and they are mostly good for reading and watching movies or TV, with content likely supplied by Amazon itself. The company doesn’t update them as often as their competitors, sometimes going a few years between upgrades. This year, the large model, the Fire HD 10, has gotten a refresh, bringing a redesigned body, better performance, and a host of new configurations you can choose from when buying it.

The Fire HD 10 is still a quite competent tablet. As this Fire HD 10 (2021) review has shown, it has a bright and crisp display and excellent battery life (plus the ability to recharge with the same cable you may use for your laptop or phone). If you're willing to spend more than twice as much on the $329 iPad, you get a much faster and snappier experience, a slightly brighter screen and all the apps you could ask for. But you're getting slightly less battery life, and with that kind of money you could buy two Fire HD 10 (2021) slates, one for you and one a relative (so you don't have to share). The better call, if you think you'll be irritated by slight lags in performance, is to spend an extra $30 to get the $179 Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus, arguably the best Amazon tablet ever. That said, the Fire HD 10 (2021) is still going to be great for the folks who are looking for a device to casually peruse the internet and read e-books and watch video. It's just a matter of how far you're going to push it.

One of the most affordable Android tablets happens to come from Amazon -- the Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet is so well priced, but also so well measured in order to reach that lower cost. But if you're a big Amazon Prime user, it might be perfect companion because it can actually pull double duty as an Echo Show screen!

Affordable and versatile, the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) is a great choice for a family tablet. Steer clear if you’re not an Amazon Prime member, and you don’t plan to be, as the tablet itself is very focused on Amazon products. It’ll be best suited to those with Prime membership who want a simple tablet for streaming TV, casual web browsing, light gaming and reading books. Having Alexa built-in is really handy, especially in Show Mode and the decent battery life is something worth knowing about too. Although it may not look or feel as sleek as more premium tablets, when it comes to value for money, it doesn’t get much better than the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021).

Of course, working on a small keyboard and display could be a sacrifice you’re not willing to make. Ultimately the experience is a compromise and well behind what you can expect from a budget Google Chromebook, let alone a laptop or Microsoft Surface. But that’s not the biggest problem: it’s that there just aren’t enough productivity apps here: you’ll have to use Google, Slack and others via the web browser, which is far from ideal.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) has more memory than the 2019 Fire tablet but otherwise matches it for battery life, display, apps and price, making it more update than upgrade. It's more suited for casual media consumption than hardcore productivity, and continues to have a disappointingly limited app library.

The 2021 version of Amazon's Fire HD 10 packs all the performance you need for web browsing, content consumption, and smart-home management. Amazon's limited app selection keeps it from broadly competing with general-purpose tablets such as Apple's iPad, but if you don't mind the Fire's limits, you'll find the new model very satisfying. This review covers the core feature set and capabilities of the Fire HD 10, 2021 edition. We also have separate reviews of the Fire HD 10 Kids and Kids Pro, the Fire HD 10 Plus, and the Fire HD 10 Productivity Bundle and Plus Productivity Bundle, all of which add features and accessories to the base model. One of those may be a better option for you if you need its specialized assets, but the $150 Fire HD 10 is our overall top pick of the bunch and our Editors' Choice among sub-$200 tablets.

Then there's the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro aimed at older children (6 to 12). It has a sleeker, less padded case, a new app store, a web browser, and the ability to make voice and video calls. The app store is locked down and limited in selection, but you can expand it to include other apps like Minecraft. The kid-friendly web browser comes with built-in parental controls, which can be used to filter out sites, only allow certain sites, or disable the browser entirely.

For $219.99 (or $249.99 for the Plus version), the combination of a decent tablet, an acceptable keyboard case, some nice roomy cloud storage, and the ability to use Microsoft Office on your primary computer looks like a really good deal. But the whole thing is soured by the lousy Amazon Appstore, which repeatedly gets in the way as you try to find the apps and services you need. Lenovo’s Chromebook Duet, our Editors' Choice for a 2-in-1 Chromebook, costs a little more ($257.59) right now, but if you don’t need the Microsoft subscription, you get a lot more all around: 4GB of RAM as opposed to the Fire HD 10's 3GB, 64GB of storage as opposed to 32GB, and Google Play. If your work requires anything more than typing words into a Microsoft Word document, go with the Duet and leave this "productivity" bundle on the shelf.

Like all of Amazon's recent tablets, the new Fire HD 10 has hands-free access to Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, which means Alexa is always on, listening for your voice commands like an Echo speaker does, though you can turn the feature off and mute the microphones. While Fire tablets don't have the array of microphones that Echo speakers have, when you dock the Fire HD 10 Plus in that Anker wireless charging dock, it essentially functions as an Echo Show, automatically entering Show Mode when you dock it.

If you’re already enmeshed in the Prime ecosystem (and can catch a deal during an Amazon sale), the Fire HD 10 Plus offers quite a bit of device for your dollar. It doesn’t exactly outstrip the budget-priced competition, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 remains a solid option if only for offering an unadulterated Android experience. But Amazon’s offering handles the basics with aplomb, and will be right at home with someone who wants to kick back with a book, or some streaming video. Just don’t come looking for much in the way of apps.

If you don’t want an iPad, don’t want to spend the money on a Samsung Galaxy tablet, but still want an Android tablet, the Fire HD 10 Plus is it. It puts your Amazon content front and center while providing access to most of the popular streaming services. If you add in the optional Anker dock, and this transforms into an Echo Show of sorts that you can take anywhere. Amazon knows what it’s doing, as the Fire tablets remain some of the most popular options available today. We’re just hoping that the design gets overhauled in the near future, along with improving the app selection in the Amazon App Store.

The Fire HD 10 Plus is Amazon's attempt to move this tablet from entertainment to something a little more productive. While typing up a Word document is easy enough, as is joining in video calls, the experience doesn't match more capable tablets from the likes of Samsung and Apple. If productivity is your primary aim, you might want to look elsewhere. But the Fire HD 10 Plus does feel more like a device designed to cover all these bases. It's at its best when consuming apps like Amazon Prime Video or Netflix or keeping the kids happy with the games it offers. But it can do yet more. The real draw of the Plus is its wireless charging - so it only really makes sense if you're buying the wireless charging dock and plan to use it in Show Mode too. Otherwise, you might be better off with the standard Fire HD 10, which offers much the same experience for less money.

For the price, the Fire HD 10 Plus offers incredible value, thanks to its large, sharp screen, punchy speakers, built-in Alexa smarts, and the ability to keep up with demanding games while offering a smooth user experience. It’s only real downside is the lack of the Google Play Store, but as we’ve seen, that’s a quick and easy fix. Regardless of whether you want to take that extra step or not, there’s no escaping the sheer bang for buck on offer here, making this a solid contender for your Android tablet shortlist.

As far as Amazon tablets go, the Fire HD 10 Plus is the cream of the crop. It’s got the best screen, solid battery life, and the best performance you can get from an Amazon tablet, and it is available at price points ranging from $180 to $250 depending on the options you choose. To get the most from the tablet, you’ll also need Amazon Prime, which costs another $119 per year. That’s what gives you access to free movies, music, and photo storage. The Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus doesn’t make sense for everyone, particularly those who rely on Google Services for their email or work. Fire OS may be Android under the hood, but it relies on Amazon Services and thus isn’t the best option for those invested in Google. On the flip side, Amazon partnered with Microsoft to make sure that Office users have access to their work apps on the Fire HD 10 Plus.

Amazon just released a new version of their top performing tablet with a 10 inch display. This one isn't that much different than the prior version it replaces, but the Plus edition might offer some useful new features.

Amazon recently updated the children's profiles extensively and also adapted the hardware for children of elementary school age with the Fire Kids Pro. In addition, even the youngest children can now use Alexa for communication. Beyond the entertainment, however, weaknesses are revealed.

As part of the Amazon Kids and Kids+ ecosystem, the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro still gets access to the library of over 20,000 movies, games, books, and other apps that they would if you purchased a standard Fire Kids tablet. Only as a Kids Pro device can you choose to allow access to more options through the digital store and the modified web browser. Through parental controls, you will still be able to adjust how much or little access your child will have to the internet and additional apps as you see fit. As your child gets older and moves towards using the tablet as much for homework as they do for entertainment, the device itself has the power for productivity. Amazon has accessories and software help facilitate your child's educational goals, but you may not get all the apps you want as it is missing Google Play Services. The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is an excellent device for older kids looking for a more mature-looking device and content from top to bottom. As the parent, you can rest assured that you still have control over how much or little is accessible to them.

Where the standard Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition is designed for very young children, the Kids Pro version of the Fire HD 10 is for older kids; the recommended age group is 6 to 12. That means a less childish-looking but very strong protective case and a more grown-up walled garden of games and apps. As it’s a Fire HD 10 underneath, it has multiple user accounts and you can use it as a standard Fire HD 10 for teenage children, or for grown-ups when the kids are in bed. This is the largest of the Kids Pro tablets, with a screen that’s well-suited to watching videos and playing games. The 10.1-inch display is roughly the same size as the one on the iPad 10.2 (2020), but it has a different, wider aspect ratio: 16:10 compared to the iPad’s 4:3. As with other Fire tablets, the parental controls are excellent and very comprehensive, and while the included one-year Kids Plus subscription doesn’t have the same breadth of content as the Google Play Store it isn’t full of dodgy downloads or age-inappropriate apps either.

The Fire HD 10 Kids Pro (2021) is a well-rounded tablet with some handy kid-friendly features. Stellar battery life and a showy panel are its big selling points, but there’s a lot to like: the USB Type-C connector makes charging quick and easy, while the included bumper case helps protect your investment from toddlers and tweens alike. If you're in the market for a kid-friendly tablet, few competitors can match what the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro (2021) offers for $199, particularly with that generous extended warranty. If your kids do need something more versatile, you might consider the more powerful and more expensive 8th Gen iPad (2020), or the less expensive and less powerful Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, which has access to the full Android app ecosystem. But if you do decide to invest in a new Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro (2021) you'll be getting a great all-around tablet that can help your kids learn and play, on a schedule that works for you.

Limiting screen time and ensuring your kids only watch, read and play appropriate things is increasingly difficult these days, but a Fire tablet – whether a Kids Edition or not – can really help to enforce those limits when you can’t supervise the whole time. The HD 10 Kids Pro, as a package, is good value, especially if your child is 7 or 8 and can get a good few years’ use of it. Even if they’re a bit older, they can use the ‘Pro’ interface and then you can swap them over to the main adult interface when you think it’s appropriate, and it’s no longer a kids tablet. The only snag, as ever, is that this isn’t an Android tablet and there are still some apps that you just can’t get in Amazon’s Appstore (such as YouTube).

With excellent parental controls, tonnes of content, a slick case and worry-free guarantee the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is a great choice for kids that want a larger tablet. The only downsides are that it’s a fair bit more expensive than the 8-inch version and Amazon’s app store is quite limited.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids is a great tablet for young children ages three to seven. It sports a bright display, a durable kid-friendly design, and excellent battery life. Plus, the detailed built-in parental controls give you a lot of control over what a child does on the device, with little risk of them going astray. Of course, there are some other alternatives. You can buy a the more expensive iPad 2020 ($300) and configure iOS settings so that your child can’t access certain content. Or, you can save a little money by buying a Galaxy Tab A7 Lite ($159) and setting up some limits for your kid using Android's built-in parental controls. In both cases you'll miss out on the longer battery life, as well as the accident-proof design, though you'll gain access to more apps, as well as better performance on the iPad. But if you just want a durable, long-lasting tablet tailored to young children, the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids is a great choice.

But I was completely wrong. The 2021 model of the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids tablet is worth every single dollar, not least with the Kid-Proof Case and two years of free replacements. Books, audiobooks, curated apps and games, all the favorite TV channels, they're all there, ready to use, with minimal fuss, and Amazon Kids+ enhances that. The Parental Control tool may be browser-only (even on mobile) but is far easier to use than Google's Family Link. And fortunately, the Amazon App Store boasts a large enough library that key apps such as my daughter's educational tools are available without worrying about installing Google Play. Ideal for car journeys, playing audiobooks in bed, watching movies in the snug, and games, the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids tablet for 2021 is currently unmatched when it comes to buying tablets for under 16s.

Amazon's Fire HD 10 Kids and Kids Pro models (both $199.99) combine a capable tablet, a rugged case, and a curated content library for a one-stop, ready-made entertainment solution that's ideal for kids ages 3–10. The 10-inch screen is perfect for displaying picture books and comics, and parental controls help you keep your kids safe as they read, watch, and browse. Very few tablets intended for kids are worth bothering with; the Fire HD 10 Kids is more than worth its price tag, and is our Editors' Choice for children's tablets.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids gives parents of younger children all the tools they need to feel good about giving a tablet to their little ones. It comes wrapped in a large, kid-proof case and is backed by a two-year, no-questions-asked replacement warranty. Twelve free months of Amazon Kids+ gives you access to plenty of age-specific, child-friendly content. And the tablet itself has a large, relatively sharp screen, decent speakers, and enough power to do whatever children need it to. Out of all of the Amazon Kids tablets, the Fire HD 10 Kids strikes the best balance of the bunch, earning it our Editors' Choice award. The iPad has more third-party apps and a better display, but it costs nearly twice the price and isn't half as targeted toward children.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 has a good build, a solid screen, and just enough power to browse the web, play casual games, read, and stream videos. You can connect your favorite headphones via Bluetooth or the standard headphone jack and get through most bus, car, plane, or train rides thanks to the long-lasting battery. The biggest downside is Amazon’s limited app selection. Even so, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better tablet for $139.99. The $99.99 Fire HD 8 is more portable, but also more sluggish. The $229.99 Fire Max 11 is faster and has a sharper screen, but suffers from shorter battery life. That makes the 2023 edition of the Fire HD 10 the top model in Amazon's tablet lineup, as well as the best tablet we've tested under $150, earning it our Editors' Choice award.

Amazon's Fire HD 10 refresh for 2023 offers a decent upgrade over previous generations, with stylus support and a faster processor. It still features the crowd-pleasing 10.1-inch 1080p display, making it a solid choice for binge-watching on a budget. While it still comes with 3GB of RAM, Amazon claims its processor now offers 25% faster performance, making the Silk Browser less painful to use.

If you’re looking for a slate to use at work or for advanced creative tasks, then this won't be it because it’s simply not powerful enough and the operating system too closed. But if you want something simple and durable to stream TV shows and movies, read ebooks and control your smart home, then this ticks all of the boxes thanks to its decent-sized screen, sturdy build, and affordable price point. While it may be lacking in some areas, the Fire HD 10 is packed to the brim with handy features, like the option to add profiles for each family member including your children. Added to that is the fact that it can double-up as an Alexa smart display when you aren’t using it, with all of the perks of a device like the Amazon Echo Show. Generally speaking, the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) is a fantastic choice for those on the hunt for an affordable family-friendly tablet. It's not an upgrade-worthy tablet, but it's still a great tablet for all the basics it offers.

For the price, the latest Fire HD 10 offers incredible value, thanks to its large, sharp screen, punchy speakers, built-in Alexa smarts, and the ability to keep up with demanding games while offering a smooth user experience. Its only real downside is the lack of the Google Play Store, but as we’ve seen, that’s a quick and easy fix. Regardless of whether you want to take that extra step or not, there’s no escaping the sheer bang for buck on offer here, making this a solid contender for your Android tablet shortlist.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) may not inspire desire or excitement like an iPad might, but it’s still a damn fine deal. It packs in a sharp screen, solid build, epic battery life, and good-enough performance at a price that’s a fraction of many competitors. Granted, there are shortcomings and annoyances. Amazon’s app ecosystem is lacking compared to Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store, and the middling processing power means that high-end games are largely out of the question—if you can even find them on the Amazon Appstore. But as a go-anywhere device for streaming media, casually browsing the web, and keeping in touch with the world, the Amazon Fire HD still feels like a bargain with this latest revision. It’s a strong pick for the budget-conscious buyer.

We are now on the 13th generation of the Fire tablet line, more than a decade from the launch of the device family that has arguably done more than any other to define what budget tablets can be. The Fire 10 bears all the benefits of years of iterative design tweaks. It has a screen that is decent but never wows, loud dual speakers, a robust design, strong battery life, enough performance for most people and a selfie camera that allows for clear video calls. That it also comes at a price which can drop as low as £80 is the icing on the cake. There are a few strings attached of course – you’ll find ads on the lock screen, a profusion of Amazon services trying to sell themselves to you, a lack of easy access to Google’s apps and a restrictive base internal memory allocation. If you can live with all of the above, the Fire HD 10 is one of the best and most balanced budget tablets on the market today, and as such it earns our recommendation.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is for anyone who reads a lot on Kindle and Audible, has a Prime subscription, and streams the occasional show on Prime Video. If you’re already invested in the Amazon ecosystem, you will appreciate having everything at your fingertips when you first power it on. However, at £150/$140 (with ads), this is only slightly cheaper than other budget Android tablets, which represent better value for money, largely because they’ll give you access to the Google Play app store, which offers more choice than its Amazon counterpart.

I still struggle to fully recommend Amazon tablets, as the software is so obnoxiously outdated that it effectively blocks off one of the main uses for a tablet. If there’s any chance you might want productivity features from your tablet, do yourself a favour and spend a little more on something like the Oppo Pad Air – it’s much more suited to work, has a better display and is currently only £179. If, however, you’ve no real need for access to Google Drive or the Chrome browser, the simple fact is that you’re not going to find a better tablet for this price. Performance gets a tidy little boost, battery life is still competitive and the display remains sufficient for most people. It’s not the flashiest tablet out there, but for casual streaming, light gaming or something to keep the kids quiet for a bit, the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) reigns supreme.

While iPads still seem to rule the tablet universe, when it comes to comparing the Fire HD 10 (2023) with any iPad model, it's all about the price. Qualitatively, the iPads will outshine Fire tablets in terms of their displays, cameras, sound, processing power, storage, and certainly app selection. However, the Fire HD 10 (2023) is passable to quite good in all of those categories, for a price of $139.99 for the 32GB model or $179.99 for the 64GB model (tack on another $15 each to banish the lock screen ads). Considering that a basic iPad starts at $329 for the older iPad (9th Generation) or $449 for last year's iPad (10th Generation), it boils down to what you really need to do with such a device.

If you're trying to choose between an iPad or a Fire HD 10 Kids Pro tablet, much will depend on your kid's age and how they will use it. Amazon has refined the Amazon Kids platform into a kid-friendly user experience that doesn't feel childish for older kids but that younger kids can still navigate. This tablet can handle multiple profiles, including young children, older children, and adults, so it can grow with the kids. However, it is still limited by its 3GB of RAM and slower processor than an A13 Bionic chip. An iPad has more high-end features, like a better processor and camera, and is a grown-up platform that is perfect for older kids, those who like to do more intricate play, like editing photos, and even those in the Apple ecosystem. Even if we are an Apple family, I'll continue getting my youngsters Fire kids tablets until they can appreciate the value of a device you can't walk on.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro has decent hardware, an attractive screen, and enough memory and processing power to run multiple apps simultaneously. It offers long enough battery life to keep kids busy for car rides or flights, has a headphone jack for when wireless headphones run out of juice, and reduces adult anxiety thanks to its top-of-the-line parental controls and endless supply of kid-friendly content. The most significant detractor is Amazon itself—the in-your-face lock screen ads and heavily favored Amazon content can wear on you. If you are looking for a kid-focused tablet for a child that is eight or above, then the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids is a fantastic tablet. For younger kids, you may want to consider the smaller Fire HD 8 Kids or Fire 7 Kids because it will be easier to hold for smaller hands. As for this device, Amazon's upgrades Amazon have made it a great device that can grow with your child. The performance and expandable storage means that as your child's needs become more demanding, the device can handle it. Considering that, along with the excellent Amazon Kids+ software that keeps the bad content out, lets you have control of tablet usage, and offers a Pro mode to handle more mature kids' requirements, it's hard to go wrong here. Oh, and don't forget the free two-year worry-free warranty that nets you a replacement device should anything happen to the tablet. These things add up to a great experience for kids and parents alike and will keep Amazon as the leader in the space for the foreseeable future.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro (2023) tablet is a solid option as a secondary device at home, especially one that will be primarily used by kids. Amazon offers a comprehensive set of parental control features, giving parents better control over how their children browse the web, play games, or watch streaming content. In that sense, even the smaller app selection on the Amazon App Store works in favor of the Kids version, with better curation than the one found on the Google Play Store. Outside the kids’ features, the Fire HD 10 under the protective case is also a fine option for streaming media or casual games, with support for the most popular video streaming services (except for Apple TV+). The cheap Amazon tablet is also a good choice for video calls with friends and family (except for Google Meet).

Amazon:
