It's hard to hate the Fire HD 10. Yes, it costs $100 more than the popular Fire 7, but I've got them sitting next to each other in front of me, and I'd never give the cheaper one as a gift to a relative, but rather invest a little more to make sure their favorite TV shows look better and their tablet lasts for longer.

For £150, the wise money is still on the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2019). At this price, compromises are inevitable but, provided you’re well-versed in Amazon’s ecosphere, there’s so much to enjoy here. It’s snappier, better-equipped and, to top it off, looks that bit classier than the device it replaces.

The immediate appeal of the Fire HD 10 is for families, with this offering much better value than a premium rivals, with a well-rounded tablet experience. Its strength is entertainment, making it great for travel or as a second screen for movies and TV.

Even if you’re not an Amazon Prime subscriber, the Fire HD 10 is still a solid budget tablet for watching Netflix, using Facebook and browsing the web. The updates, including better battery life, faster processor and USB-C charging are all welcome, and we’re fans of the new white model. As ever, bear in mind the absence of Google apps and services, but so long as you’re happy to use their web versions, or jump through a few hoops to install the Google Play Store, it’s a great-value choice.

The Fire HD 10 is the best tablet Amazon makes. It costs more than the Fire HD 8, but for its superior screen quality and battery life, as well as the newly added USB-C port, it's worth the extra $70. If only it had the Google Play Store, it would jump right to the upper echelons of our best tablets list.

But you can’t complain about the hardware you get for the cash. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A is perhaps the most obvious recent alternative. It comes with Google Play and also has a 1200p screen. However, it costs £50 more and has a significantly weaker processor.

That the hardware is so capable for the cash highlights how far behind Amazon’s apps and games libraries are though. Too many top Android games aren’t available, including PUBG, Asphalt 9 and Call of Duty: Mobile. Capable techies may be able to “hack” Google Play onto this tablet, but that crowd and the usual Amazon Fire tablet audience are worlds apart.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is the best 10-inch tablet you can buy for $150. Although it costs nearly twice as much as the $80 Fire HD 8, it's money well spent for snappier performance, a higher-resolution display, and nearly double battery life. There simply aren't any appealing Android tablets out there right now at this size and price, so your next best best is the iPad, which offers better performance and more apps, but it costs more than twice as much. So if you're in the market for a simple, media-focused tablet, the Fire HD 10 is easily your best bet and our Editors' Choice.

There still a market for a cheap tablet? For years, Amazon has argued that the answer is yes, with its consistent lineup of low-powered — and low priced — Fire tablets. The latest of these is the newly updated Fire HD 10, which looks to make the case that there’s room in the market for a larger tablet that isn’t an iPad. But does the $149 Fire HD 10 do enough to justify saving the money compared to Apple’s increasingly cheap entry-level iPads?

A new port here, a battery improvement there, a software feature on top. It’s not a massive change over Fire HD 10 Tablets that have preceded it, but nevertheless 2019’s slate is looking better than any Amazon has put out before. The jump to USB-C is smart, the price remains attractive, and, as the years have rolled on, the Fire OS skin has become more palatable, even if it remains a walled-garden into Amazon’s world. Given the price tag, you could do much, much worse. Keep an eye out for our final verdict soon.

Commentaire
ARM Mali-G72 MP3:
