The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra 5G shows no frame drops at 30 fps and just a few at 60 fps; however, it shows a lot of stutters when playing video games and motion blur is noticeable. A big plus is that video play resumes instantly after moving the slider forwards or backwards in the timeline. Another plus is that the device is quite smooth when browsing, when in the gallery app, and when gaming. The ZTE device manages judder well, has smooth and accurate touch, and responds only rarely to ghost touches, but its measured touch-to-display response time at 103 ms, frequent stutters and visible aliasing make for an uncomfortable gaming experience overall.

For those seeking a smartphone with great qualities as a recording device, the Axon 30 Ultra is not a good fit. The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra performs adequately in playback, however, and even excels in the arena of artifacts. Its scores in timbre, dynamics, and volume reflect the fact that this smartphone is functional for everyday uses.

The Axon 30 Ultra is ZTE’s 2021 flagship device. It boasts a 6.7-inch, FHD+, an AMOLED flexible curved screen display with 144 Hz refresh rate, and a Snapdragon 888 chipset running Android 11. Providing enough juice to power all that, the Axon 30 Ultra is equipped with 4600 mAh battery that offers super-fast 65W charging. The main camera uses a Sony IMX686 chip linked to a f/1.6-aperture OIS lens, with a Samsung GW3 sensor on the ultra-wide coupled to a 120° field-of-view, ultra-low distortion, f/2.2-aperture lens. The dedicated portrait camera uses the same 64 MP Samsung sensor as the ultra-wide alongside a f/1.9-aperture lens. Finally the tele shooter features an 8 MP sensor with a periscope telephoto lens for 5x optical and up to 60x hybrid zoom. That’s a lot of hardware for a device that falls within our Premium ranking segment of smartphones priced between $600 to $799. Let’s see how it gets on in our DXOMARK Camera tests.

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is an excellent reminder of just how starved the US is for innovative yet affordable smartphones. It’s among the most handsome phones we’ve seen this year, and has a solid OLED display and an interesting camera stack. But despite its strengths, we can’t recommend the phone for US buyers. Poor connectivity and political uncertainty make it a risky bet that we wouldn’t take. If you’re looking for a small, relatively inexpensive Android flagship that will just work, no matter which carrier you choose, the Samsung Galaxy S21 is your best option. Both the 9 Pro and the S21 pack the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform, plenty of RAM, and incredible OLED displays with adaptive refresh rates. These excellent flagship-class phones have the power and features you need now, and much more reliability down the road.

ZTE stumbled a few years back when it was briefly on the US government's shit list, but it was able to get back to normal (unlike Huawei). The Axon 30 Ultra is its first major US release since the unpleasantness, and it's mostly successful. The display, build quality, specs, and camera hardware are all excellent values, and it's very fast with the Snapdragon 888. I like using the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra, but I don't like holding it much. The design is visually attractive, but the sharp, narrow rail along the edge digs into your hand. The curved screen also doesn't do any favors for the hand-feel. This phone would also get a higher score were it not for the lacking 5G support in the US. One 5G band is better than none, but the lack of wireless support makes me feel like this is not a long-haul device. Carriers are going to be investing heavily in 5G going forward, and this phone will barely benefit.

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is a smartphone that immediately grabbed my attention. Its headline features include a 6.67in AMOLED display, quad-camera system with three 64MP shooters and a telescope lens, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset and 65W fast charging. All of this comes in a slim, sleek and stylish frame with a price that undercuts many flagships by hundreds of euro. This isn’t just targeting the average flagship – this is pitched against the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra which comes in at €1479, almost twice the price of the Axon 30 Ultra,

The Axon 30 Ultra comes at a price point of $749 in the US and 749€ in Europe. At this price, the nearest competitors are the Galaxy S21 and the OnePlus 9. The S21 is a very different form-factor phone, so not exactly quite the same comparison device, you’d have to compare it to the S21+, which at currently $899 and 1049€ is far outpricing the Axon 30 Ultra. While my experience on myOS on the Axon 30 Ultra has been fine and the phone received a couple of software updates since I got it, generally it would be wise to go into considering the phone with low expectations for much future significant udpates. In general, the Axon 30 Ultra was overly positive for me, and was a breath of fresh air in the flagship landscape. While the phone has weaknesses, it’s priced quite fairly, so it makes me look forward to ZTE’s next iteration.

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra 5G is a phone with a bold gambit: to provide all the features and feel of an ‘ultra’ smartphone, at a price that won’t leave a hole in your wallet. It mostly succeeds with aplomb, but for a lack of stated long-term software support, this is a phone with few weaknesses and soaring strengths.

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra 5G is a high-specced phone with a great display, a good array of cameras, fantastic zoom photography capability, and a blindingly fast battery charging rate. The software still needs some refining, but the phone is a great choice for those seeking a flagship device who may not want to pay the highest price for a flagship.

There is an awful lot to like about the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra, particularly the build quality and clean software. The phone is a fun one to play with as its large display is almost mesmerizing, especially when playing around with the camera. Games and videos look silky smooth with the (up to) 144Hz refresh rate and the 20:9 aspect ratio feels very comfortable. It will be at least two years before our mobile needs even come close to requiring the hardware of this device.

Is the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra the right phone for you? If you’re looking for a phone that’s well-rounded at a great price, the Axon 30 Ultra checks all the right boxes. It does have a few issues, but unless you’re a hardcore mobile gamer, there’s really no reason to mass up on this phone. The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is a great buy for the casual user who wants to upgrade from a mid-range device.

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is exactly what it appears to be: a lower cost alternative to the big Android flagships with top-tier performance and a great screen. I wouldn’t recommend it to just anyone, and you need to be comfortable either living with a couple of quirks or navigating a way around them. You don’t quite get the same level of polish or reassurance that you would from a Samsung, OnePlus, or Google device, but in return you get excellent performance for the money.

That said, the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra won’t top any best lists, as it’s dragged down by its less refined features. Had the phone offered a little more battery capacity, a QHD resolution display or some consistent photography software, it would easily be equivalent to the OnePlus 9 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Fortunately, the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra doesn’t have to be. Its current price is low enough that it's easy to overlook those shortcomings. ZTE’s made a real flagship-killing phone with the Axon 30 Ultra, and it should be your top choice if you want the ultimate hardware for the cheapest price you can get.

There might be no under-display selfie camera, but for the asking price you'll soon forget about that. This ZTE is powerful and has a one super smooth 144Hz screen. However, some software notification issues irritate, and while the cameras have potential there's not great synergy between all the optics on the rear.

It’s a genuinely exciting flagship smartphone in practically every department: it’s lightweight, feels great in the hand, the 144Hz 6.67in AMOLED display is detailed and crisp, the Snapdragon 888 allows it to perform like a gaming phone and, well, that camera setup is incredible.

The Axon does come short in a few other areas - not by much, but the room for improvement is there. The display has a ton of potential but doesn't quite live up to it, dust and water protection is missing, there's no wireless charging. For all its camera chops, the Axon is also missing AF on the ultrawide. All things considered, though, we can give the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra 5G a recommendation. It'll be a particularly good fit for those looking to take nice pictures without springing the cash for the true no-holds-barred flagships that can run you twice the price. Sure, there will be compromises, but there won't be any dealbreakers.

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is an odd case of a phone that's almost unique based on how un-unique it seemingly is. The design is pretty boring and unexceptional even if there's nothing wrong with it, and there's no feature that's going to blow your mind in any way, but there's also nothing too terribly wrong with it.

ZTE’s step back into the flagship market is definitely noted. The Axon 30 Ultra brings premium design and performance at a more than reasonable price of $749, positioning itself somewhere between the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and the Galaxy S21 pricewise. The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is very powerful, with a Snapdragon 888 processor coupled with 8GB or 12GB of RAM. The phone is indeed snappy, and the 144Hz FHD+ AMOLED display is its strongest weapon.

ZTE took a big step forward in modernizing its smartphone lineup with the Axon 30 Ultra. This sleek device bests some competitors with a 144Hz screen and matches them on many other features. It lacks a few extras you'll find on other affordable flagships, but this is a finely crafted phone for an aggressively competitive price.

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is the 2021 flagship offering from the company. With a starting price of $749, the Axon 30 Ultra positions itself somewhere between the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and the Galaxy S21 when it comes to price. However, the specs sheet mentions perks and features you’d expect out of much more expensive phones: 65W fast charging, a periscope zoom camera, a Snapdragon 888 chip with 5G, and a 144Hz OLED display, for example.

There are a lot of good Android flagships from Chinese tech brands such as the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, OPPO Find X3 Pro, and the Vivo X60 Pro Plus. But the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra has something on all of those phones — it will be sold in the US. While it’s not going to take a dent out of Apple or Samsung’s pie, with LG shutting down its mobile business, there’s room in the US phone scene for another brand to make an impression.

Qualcomm Adreno 660:
