So, which one should you get? Redmi Y3 or the Redmi Note 7 at Rs. 9999. We recently made a specs comparision between the two phones that makes it clear that Redmi Y3 is strictly for those who need a good selfie camera and dedicated SIM slots. The company recently confirmed that the Redmi Note 7 will soon be replaced by the Note 7S with a better camera, so you have to shell out Rs. 1000 more. But, it is worth spending a bit more since you get a better screen, 48MP rear camera, faster performance, support for fast charging, and lots more. If you are tight on the budget, and selfie is not your preference, the Redmi 7 that is Rs. 1000 cheaper rate is also a good choice since it shares almost similar specifications as the Redmi Y3.

Priced at Rs 9,999 for the base model (3GB/32GB), the Redmi Y3 is a decent performer with a good selfie camera. The phone’s HD+ display might not impress multimedia enthusiasts due to its sub-par sharpness and lack of HD streaming support. However, its glass build, gradient design, decent battery, and capable selfie camera make the phone a good option in the camera-centric budget smartphone segment.

The Redmi Y3 has a clear-cut mission — Make selfies great again. It’s weapon of choice is a 32MP camera on the front which while preserving facial details has the tendency to blow up the highlights. The advantages of a high-res camera, however, isn’t as apparent as in the case of the Redmi Note 7 Pro’s 48MP rear camera, especially in low-light. Switch to the binned mode and it'll be apparent why the Redmi Y3 is a solid selfie shooter. Surprisingly, the Redmi Y3 seems fairly adept at handling popular mobile games as the gaming performance revealed. Frankly, the Redmi Y3 is a mixed-bag with a few trade-offs here and there. But if you’re not a nitpicker when it comes to choosing your smartphone, this is an easy smartphone to recommend if good selfies are particularly what you’re after.

Well if you are looking for a phone with the best possible selfie camera under Rs 15,000, go for the Redmi Y3. In addition to that superb front camera, the Redmi Y3 offers good design and incredible battery life. But at the same time, I believe Xiaomi could have priced the phone slightly on the lower side considering the Redmi Note 7 (with much better specs and performance) comes at the same price tag of Rs 9,999.

Pixel 3a is Google’s affordable offering emphasizing its flagship camera with a trade-off with the premium design and top-notch specs. Even though the design aesthetics, as well as, the performance has been degraded on the phone, the good thing is that Google has preserved the camera and its features to make sure you get Pixel camera experience. If you have seen the Pixel 3 camera already, this will deliver you pretty much the same camera features surprisingly with its cutting-edge photo quality.

Redmi Y3 is a good smartphone overall, with decent looks, good performance, rear cameras and battery. For users though there will be some confusion, especially give that the Redmi Note 7, which has a more premium glass build and better Snapdragon 660 processor, is also available at Rs 9,999.

So, to answer our initial question — is the Redmi Y3 worth buying over more powerful smartphones at its base price of Rs. 9,999? The answer really depends on how big of a selfie shooter you are. If you find yourself obsessively taking pictures of yourself for Instagram throughout the day, then you might be willing to compromise on the specifications, just for a better front camera. While not perfect, we did find the Redmi Y3 to have an edge over competition such as the Redmi Note 7 (Review) and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 (Review) when it comes to selfies, especially in low-light.

A sturdy ‘Aura Prism’ design, long battery life, fluid gaming and impressive overall camera performance are the strengths of Redmi Y3. The weaknesses include the night and low-light shots, slow charging and heating issues that crop up after prolonged usage. However, under Rs 10k, the phone gives you a 1.8Ghz Snapdragon 632 processor and a competent camera setup (both front and back) that shoots splendidly in the day and illuminated conditions. The security options like face unlock work quickly and the phone gives a good audio performance. As a final word, it is a well-balanced device and you may consider buying this one if you are looking for a good entry-level phone.

The phone certainly offers everything you'd expect in a sub-Rs 10,000 smartphone - good cameras, a capable chipset, two-day battery life and an appealing design. Apart from the average display and ad-laden software experience there very little to complain about here.

Qualcomm Adreno 506:
