With its excellent screen, superb performance, long battery life and great camera, the Z5 Compact is the complete package if you want top performance in a small package. Especially as fewer manufacturers are making well-specified smaller handsets. When it launched, it was a little pricey, though, as Sony increased the SIM-free price to £430 from the Z3 Compact's original price of £350. Nowadays, you can find it has decreased in price back to around £350. Contract prices, too, have fallen and you can now pick up the Xperia Z5 Compact from £22 per month.

The Xperia Z5 Compact packs a lot of good things into its small size: powerful performance, excellent endurance and a bright, colorful display. However, the boxy phone is stuffed to the brim with unnecessary apps and marred by awkwardly placed buttons that are hard to access. For the same $500 price, you can get the equally petite HTC One A9, which has a sharper, more colorful display in a handsome, iPhone-like body. And if you're not stuck on a smaller display, the Nexus 5X offers longer battery life and capable performance at $100 cheaper.

Although it’s a little odd that a 2015 mini smartphone is as big as the phablets of five years ago, the Z5 Compact is still a good small form factor phone. Sony deserves credit for the top quality camera, accurate fingerprint reader and fast charging. It’s therefore a sham that the Z5 Compact isn’t quite as fast as other phones, plus there are the overheating problems and the regression in waterproofing.

While large sized smartphones are gaining immense popularity among users, I on the other hand prefer smaller sized phones. Sony is the only company that makes flagship smartphones in small sizes. I like it so much that I bought one. Both the Z5 and the Z5 Compact are great phones and fun. The only feature that didn’t live up to my expectations is the camera.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is quite the unusual handset. It promises flagship-worthy features in a tight, compact package, and there’s still plenty of folks looking for that kind of phone. At the same time, there are very few alternatives fitting that description – practically, we can’t think of a brand-name Android-powered alternative to Sony’s offering. But in reality, the Z5 Compact fails to impress on many levels. It is a good smartphone, just not an excellent one. All things considered, it stands out with its powerful processor, good performance, decent battery life, and water resistance. In most other categories, the Z5 Compact is an average performer. Its camera gets the job done, but it isn’t as impressive as Sony makes it look. The screen is very bright, but of average quality. Having stereo speakers is nice, but their sound is average at best.

Although the design is very similar to what has gone before, the way the phone feels and works has been improved in every iteration, so they are doing enough to make it worthwhile to upgrade. If you own a Z3, you may not notice a huge leap here but anything before that and it is definitely worth the upgrade. The same is true of the Compact and it is a big jump from the Z1 Compact, but not so much over the Z3 Compact.

Talking to a lot of people, big may well be “in”, but quite a few people wish phone manufacturers would continue to make smaller devices, and that is something the Z5 Compact definitely is, and Sony has even managed it without making compromises. Highly recommended.

If you're looking for a small Android phone right now, this is it. No other phone manufacturer is making high-end devices in this form factor, which is a shame, because the Xperia Z5 Compact is beautifully proportioned. With an incredible battery life, a new high-end processor and some impressive camera upgrades, it's also worth getting this over last year's Xperia Z3 Compact. The screen is much the same, which is regrettable but does save on your battery. There's much more to like here than to criticise.

The Z3 Compact was one of the unquestionable standouts of 2014, so the Z5 compact had some pretty big shoes to fill from the outset. To its credit, it’s gone a good way to filling those shoes; the camera is leagues better than its predecessor and the Z5 compact runs rings around the Z3 from a design perspective.

The Xperia Z5 Compact is the best small phone around, but then there's not much competition in this area anymore and there are a number of phones offering decent specs for a lot less. Those looking for Z5 design and specs in a smaller frame will be pleased but it's a shame about the chunky design with the sharp edges. The fingerprint scanner is a great addition and the Snapdragon 810 with almost stock Android provides slick performance. However, the camera isn't as good as Sony makes it out to be.

I would have liked to see the screen technology get an upgrade. But if this is a trade off for the great battery life the Xperia Z5 Compact offers, I’ll take the 720p screen every time. Improvements to the camera are also a big plus and the autofocus technology is a great addition to an already feature-packed shooter.

If you would buy the Z5 Compact really comes down to its compact size. On the plus side the design and size of the Z5 Compact is ideal for those looking for a sub five inch phone. It comes with flagship specifications, IP certification and a whole bunch of extra apps and features from Sony. However, the small screen and 720p display won’t be to everyone’s liking and although the camera is good, it doesn’t live up to its hype.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact snatches the ‘small phone, big specs’ baton from the Z3 Compact with ease. It updates the processor and the camera, and doesn’t mess with too much else. It also beats the Z5 in a few fields, trashing its battery life and seemingly keeping cooler despite having to fit all those chips into such a small body. But does it do enough?

The Z5 Compact is a step in that direction. In its more compact frame, it barely puts a foot wrong, with a super camera, generally zippy performance, a decent screen and impressive battery life. The side-mounted fingerprint reader is also a genuinely brilliant innovation that you can expect other manufacturers to steal over the next few years.

Granted, it does have its small quirks, but it would undoubtedly deliver on its main promise and that is catering to those who would still appreciate a small, yet powerful Android device in the sprawling smartphone realm. It is a small phone with big ambitions and while it may be trying too hard at times, being an overachiever is not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to phone personalities.

We loved the Z3 Compact and the Z5 Compact just reaffirms our appreciation for the smaller-screened flagship. With specs that ensure this phone won’t feel tired by the end of the average two-year contract and a price tag of just (for a flagship) £429, Sony’s offering an impressive amount of bang for your buck.

The desire for a smaller phone shouldn't mean you have to compromise on its hardware or specification, and that's something Sony has absolutely nailed with its Xperia Z line-up. Whether you want a small-, medium- or large phone you'll get almost the same deal. With what we expect will be very little difference in performance, your buying choice very much comes down to what size phone you need and how much you have to spend - with the Z3 and Z3 Compact we found with its similar specification but significantly lower price the Compact actually offered the best value.

Well, if you ever needed confirmation on that statement, it couldn't come in a more unequivocal manner than the launch of the Xperia Z5 family. Introducing a new, custom camera sensor, ticking the fingerprint checkbox, updating the looks and moving into a new large-screen flagship product category - all these moves are signs that Sony is keeping up with the times.

Coming in black, white, yellow and pink, the Xperia Z5 Compact seems to be following very closely in the Z3 Compact’s footsteps at first glance. It’s another 4.6-incher with a chunky (8.9mm), plasticky frame, that feels refreshingly comfortable and light (138g) in the hand. But there are a couple of key differences with this new mini mobile.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is as fun and powerful as you could want it to be. There are few phones for those who want something smaller in the pocket without sacrificing power, so this could prove to be a popular choice. Then there's a new camera that's promising great things, another appealing aspect to the Compact.

Qualcomm Adreno 430:
