It's as if Sony doesn't realize how cutthroat this market is. Snapdragon 820 performance, waterproofing and microSD support aside, there's not enough here to recommend this overly expensive Android phone.

The Xperia X line represents a drastic shift in philosophy for Sony, and many transition devices were a bit rough around the edges. Look at how Samsung struggled from the Galaxy S4 to the Galaxy S6. We can only hope that future Xperia X phones are better refined and well-rounded products.

Xperia X Performance is currently the best Sony smartphone. This, however, does not mean that it’s equal to all other premium models. This smartphone comes with a Snapdragon 820 CPU, and it is only natural that we do not have any remarks as regards performance or exterior temperatures after a continuous stress test. X Performance has a Full HD display, and not Quad HD, which will be a drawback only for those who want everything contemporary technology can offer. Otherwise, the screen provides good enough detail, and Sony’s Triluminos and X Reality technologies contribute to the better image quality. Furthermore, if you’ve been disappointed by the lack of an IP68 certificate in Xperia X, the Performance version has one. However, there is no difference between the two in terms of camera and software.

Is the Sony Xperia X Performance worth the $700 it'll cost from any of a variety of stores users are able to buy it from, with or without T-Mobile? Not if you consider the Sony Xperia Z5 and its current price at around $500 unlocked - have a peek at our Xperia Z5 Review Part I: The Camera to see if that's what you want instead - that's the only part you'll need to see, really.

Both autofocus and video stabilization are excellent, however. Autofocus is not only fast and accurate, but copes extremely well with zoom correction, which allows users to add another dimension to their video capture. Video stabilization is particularly impressive, despite some high-frequency motion and judder effects visible while panning. Detail preservation in outdoor videos is very good, too, and although more luminance noise and loss of fine detail is visible n indoor videos, it’s not overly detrimental to video quality.

The handset also isn’t enough of an upgrade over the Z5, both in terms of hardware and aesthetic, to warrant a purchase for hardcore Sony fanatics. In the end, the Xperia X Performance is far from a bad phone, there are just better options out there in 2016.

The only way the X Performance could become decent value is if Sony reduced the price to under $400, undercutting both the LG G5 and the OnePlus 3. But I just can’t see this phone getting a $300 price cut any time soon, which makes it very hard to recommend up against its current competitors. The Xperia X Performance is a disappointing step backwards for Sony. There are too many issues with this handset for me to recommend it over high-end Android competitors, and the exorbitant price tag makes it poor value for consumers.

I’ll never stop mourning the death of the Xperia Z series, especially because I don’t see the Xperia X series picking up where those phones left off. I like some aspects of the Xperia X Performance, like its water resistance, its speedy processor, and the fact that it’s a really comfortable phone to use. But I can’t call it a premium device because it simply doesn’t feel like one. It’s not worthy of flagship status, either, and I suspect Sony will have to try really, really hard to convince the public that it’s worth an exorbitant $700.

Looking at all these comparisons individually, Sony's model ended up coming a lot closer to competing on the same level as Apple's market-leader than we ever expected it might, and even where one phone pulled ahead of the other in all the various aspects we considered, the gap was quite narrow at times.

With a more elegant and palm-friendly chassis, superior camera, and much faster charging, the Galaxy S7 is the clear winner here. On paper the phones are near equals, but when we got down to the details, Samsung's flagship turned out to be better in almost every important aspect of daily operations. Moreover, Sony priced its finest for the season on par with the Galaxy S7, yet it will be sold unlocked in the US for usage on AT&T and T-Mobile only, and with a finger scanner missing. Thus, the Xperia X Performance is not in a fair fight against the S7 in the US, but even in other markets, the Galaxy S7 is definitely the better choice.

There you have it for this in-depth look at the Sony Xperia X Performance! There is no doubt that this is a good phone, and while there are some quirks and odd hardware decisions, they aren’t significant enough to be considered huge problems. However, an important point to keep in mind is that this device is priced the same as other currently generation flagships like the LG G5, HTC 10, and Samsung Galaxy S7, and the price is what definitely works against it.

The Xperia X Performanceꞌs $700 price tag invites comparisons to other phones in that lofty price range — the iPhone 6s and, arguably, the best Android handset ever made in the Samsung Galaxy S7. Sonyꞌs offering canꞌt match the stylish design of those smartphones, and its camera, while capable, comes up short when compared to what the S7 can do (especially in low light). The one area where Sonyꞌs Performance handily beats out most of its competition — battery life — is hardly a scale-tipper.

With a $700 price tag (the phone's currently available for pre-order in the US, ahead of retail availability next month), Sony's putting the Xperia X Performance head-to-head with some very serious Android flagships, and while the smartphone might be a decently solid model on its own, it just can't hold a candle to some of those exceptionally well done, really polished entries from other manufacturers.

We started with a question and we're still struggling for an answer. The Xperia X Performance could've been better - or cheaper - or could've come sooner. Now, there's little anyone can do about any of those... But we'd be darned if there isn't an Xperia X Premium or Pro, or Plus, or whatever, in the works.

Sony's had a chance to regroup and reevaluate its own smartphone strategy and their newly found focus on the US market is more than welcome. Sony has taken everything it has learned about making phones since the Xperia Z and applied it to the Xperia X lineup. Sony's main model in the lineup is the Xperia X, which means Sony doesn't think every phone needs the highest-end hardware to perform well. But if any customer still does want the high end stuff, they can reach for the Xperia X Performance.

The next Xperia flagship is due to launch in the latter half of this year and if it looked just like the Xperia X Performance with the same specs, it wouldn't be disappointing. In fact, Sony could easily just relabel this device and maybe it will. The design of the Xperia X Performance is stunning. The metal build really sets the OmniBalance shape off and the extra touches like the metal rim around the rear camera lens make this device feel like a premium handset.

Both Sony Xperia X handsets will be available in the summer of 2016, but predictably, there’s no word yet on prices. I’d hope that the X will be cheaper than the X Performance, and the X Performance cheaper than the Xperia Z5. If it is, Sony could be onto a winner. If it isn't, it'll be a disappointment.

Commentaire
Qualcomm Adreno 530:
