Much like its predecessor, the Sony Xperia 1 VI can and does boast some impressive hardware, particularly in the camera department. The fact that it is no longer a slimmer-than-average device is, at least in my books, a massive plus point and a welcome departure that allows it to join the fold of other candy bar flagship smartphones. And while its asking price of RM6,499 is no less steep, I feel the phone makes up for it by offering potential owners of the phone a solid mobile photography experience, battery life that runs rings around most other flagships, access to certain creature comforts like Google Walley, and the ability to expand your storage via microSD card if needed. The only other thing I wish Sony would have at least changed – this really is just a minor niggle but one I think would still benefit the overall sale of the phone – is to include a USB-C charging cable. I mean, it’s one thing if they don’t want to provide a charging adapter but come on, a charging cable isn’t too much to ask for.

I love Sony. When smartphones from companies like Apple and Samsung zig, Sony inevitably zags, and it’s how we ended up with the Xperia 1 line in the first place. The series has built its reputation on narrowcasting to Sony loyalists with world-first features that rivals don’t even consider competing against. However, that’s starting to change with the Xperia 1 VI. It’s still a killer all-rounder, with the line’s now-signature utilitarian design, a clean, near-stock Android user experience, and rare design quirks, like a physical headphone jack, dual front-facing stereo speakers, and a bezel-mounted front-facing camera. But for the first time since the original 2019 Xperia 1, concessions have been made on some of the series’ defining characteristics, such as the step down from a 4K resolution, 21:9 display to a brighter, squatter 19.5:9, Full HD+ panel. This shift in Sony’s approach runs much deeper, though.

The Sony Xperia 1 VI is an old-school flagship phone that will no doubt appeal to existing Sony phone fans. It's a powerful machine with great battery life, strong cameras, and a handful of rarely-seen features like a headphone jack and expandable memory. That said, Sony has skimped on the durability of the Xperia 1 VI's design, and the phone's “fast” charging capabilities pale in comparison to those boasted by similarly priced rivals.

If you’re a creative using a smartphone to create your content, then this is worth a look as a standalone device. If you’re using Sony’s Alpha mirrorless cameras, it’s also worth your time thanks to the way it ties into the ecosystem. For anyone else, this new flagship from Sony launches into an extremely competitive market, and you’ll need to weigh up the cost against the features you’re getting.

With the Xperia 1 VI, Sony has taken a small step towards the mainstream without sacrificing its hardcore Pro credentials. While part of me is a little sad that the range has lost its unique 4K 21:9 display, the FHD+ 19.5:9 replacement is just plain better in most scenarios. While it’s a more balanced, usable phone than its predecessors, the Xperia 1 VI’s familiar design offers no compromise when it comes to the media focus. Battery life is also greatly extended and the innovative optical zoom camera has been improved with even greater range and a cool new macro function. The main camera is more pleasant to use, too, though it’s still mostly geared towards photography enthusiasts. Further improvements in the camera’s point-and-shoot credentials, together with a lower asking price, improved cooling, and an extended software support promise, could be all Sony needs to enter the flagship big leagues.

With its new shape and simplified software, there are fewer reasons to reject the Xperia 1 VI and enjoy its variable telephoto camera, bright screen and enhanced connectivity over rivals. But the cost of the phone, and the fact it's not available in the U.S., are two big problems that could spoil all the other benefits for a typical buyer.

I know I’m probably going to get it in the neck from the very loyal Xperia fans on this one, but sadly I remain a little disappointed by the latest flagship device here. If this was an £800 phone, then I’d be more forgiving. But, the fact that it’s a super-expensive device from a company which I know should be capable of producing much better results leaves me, once again, fairly cold. That’s not to say that the Xperia 1 VI is inherently bad. It’s not. It can produce some good results in certain conditions, and gives you lots to work with if you want those manual controls, and it’s got some neat tools for streaming and content creation. But there are just too many problems to give it too much of a glowing endorsement, and the competition out there just beats it far too readily, especially if your primary aim is to easily take high-quality photos.

In the end, the Xperia 1 VI represents one of the first Xperia phones to come with no major compromises. It’s no longer a phone that will only appeal to Sony camera users, or professional photographers and videographers. Yes, it’s got a camera with lots of those pro tools still, but the easy automatic camera mode, combined with some brilliant results, market-leading battery life and flagship performance – wrapped in a grippy, skinny, lightweight phone – are things anyone can appreciate. What you might not appreciate, however, is the £1300 price tag. Sony is asking for a lot of outlay for a phone that is, in most ways, about the same as a Galaxy S24 Plus. Cameras aside, that is a top-notch Samsung phone which costs £300 less, comes with a longer software commitment, reliable security patches and a wider variety of third-party cases and accessories. As brilliant as it is, at £1300 in the UK, and no availability in the US, it’s probably the best phone nobody will buy.

In low-light conditions, Sony claimed it has achieved performance close to a full-frame sensor camera due to the two-layer transistor pixel technology that separates photodiodes and pixel transistors on different substrate layers, which are then stacked together. This results in reduced noise in low-light images, and as seen by the shots we took in the low-light testing booth, the Xperia 1 VI does excellently with little noise and accurate skin tones.

Reviewing the Sony Xperia 1 VI, a big departure from the regular flagship smartphone design including a new display and camera app updates. The Mark 6 is great for creators, gaming etc, but beware - the Sony Xperia 1 VI is also expensive, so better get saving! I've been testing this phone for over a week and here's my thoughts so far. Check out my other smartphone reviews here on Tech Spurt! Now, while Sony often slaps multiple camera apps onto its premium handsets, the Xperia 1 VI makes do with a single, more standard offering. You still get some photo pro controls, but no video pro setup just yet. All the same, I like the streamlined setup and the Mark 6 can happily snap great looking portrait photos with minimal processing. The Sony Xperia 1 VI is cracking for gaming as usual.

This is a tough question, especially when we factor in the asking price. If you're a Sony fan, you're probably glad that the Japanese company still continues its smartphone journey. Some of you may perceive the FHD+ screen as a downgrade, but don't forget, it's LTPO now and quite brighter than the panel on the previous model. The software experience has been revamped as well, and now it's much more suited to the regular user and not the extreme photography enthusiast. Whether or not this change of direction will translate into sales, we don't know yet. Sony kind of took a leap of faith with this model. Has it worked? Yes, and no. Asking $1,399 after a clear downgrade in resolution won't make people happy. The new aspect ratio makes the phone modern and familiar but takes away the cool and original vibe the previous Xperia flagship had.

The Sony Xperia 1 VI is a great phone in a bubble, combining excellent battery life with a quality display, booming front-firing speakers, ample power and impressive camera hardware. Its macro photo and video capabilities shine, and with no major chinks in its armour beyond pared-back photo processing, Sony's made a great 2024 flagship. Costing more than an iPhone 15 Pro Max, though, the Xperia 1 VI remains a niche option.

The new Xperia 1 VI is finally here, and Sony is changing things this time around. In a surprising shift in product strategy, the new Xperia 1 VI is shedding some of the lineup's staple features. But you also get new ones which allows it to compete better with the market leaders. Despite these changes, the phone retains its core quirky identity, continuing to cater to creators and smartphone power users. Check out our video review to learn ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW about the phone's top features, build and screen quality, battery life, performance, and camera image quality.

All in all, the Xperia 1 VI is the best Xperia yet. The standard aspect ratio, the lower resolution and the implementation of an LTPO OLED all play a big role in our assessment. The new display is probably the reason why the device got this impeccable battery Active Use Score. We also liked the loud and nicely-tuned speakers, making this phone the ultimate multimedia device. However, the unremarkable video quality with the zoom camera, the uncompetitive charging speed and the underwhelming performance tuning of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 keep us from giving this phone an excellent score. Especially considering the launch price. Then again, if you are a photography nerd, you will definitely appreciate the solid hardware at hand here coupled with excellent battery life and various Pro-oriented modes and settings for photos and, eventually, for videos (coming with an update this Fall). Whether that would be enough to give the Sony Xperia lineup the push remains to be seen.

At 1,399 euros it's not the cheapest flagship out there, as well, so once again the premium price might limit this phone to the hardcore Sony fans.

Instead of stubbornly doing its own thing like past efforts, the Xperia 1 VI feels like a more conformist take on the Sony flagship formula. The screen aspect ratio, resolution and refresh rate are more in keeping with the rest of the phone world, as does the more hands-off photo processing. There aren’t multiple manual camera apps to overwhelm less experienced snappers, either. I still think there are better choices for point-and-shoot photographers, but there’s much less in it than previous generations. It still looks the part, has all the fan-favourite features, and delivers excellent battery life. Performance is easily on par with high-priced rivals, and those stereo speakers are a treat for the ears. The combo makes this my new favourite phone for gaming, too; shove it into a Backbone controller and little else can match it.

Qualcomm Adreno 750:
