Sony has built on the good points of the TX Series but also taken some inspiration from the iconic X505VP and produced a truly stunning ultra-portable notebook. Sony has mastered the LED backlight technology and created the best notebook screen I’ve ever seen, while Intel’s new dual-core ULV mobile chip is also a triumph for the ultra-portable notebook platform. It could do with more memory, but other than that Sony has pretty much hit the target in every area.

If the TZ12 looks familiar, that's because it's the spitting image of the TZ11 (web ID: 117830), which graced these pages just two months ago. We can't complain, as this version is as desirable as the original, but Sony has made a major change under the covers. Gone is the 100GB hard disk of the TZ11, replaced by a 32GB Samsung solid-state disk (SSD) - one of the very first laptops to contain what some consider the death knell for mechanical hard disks. We're yet to be convinced by that, but SSD does have a number of advantages over mechanical disks, which, for all their tried-and-tested years, still rely on precision moving parts. As they're prone to physical stress, extra layers such as head-parking software (as used by the Toshiba R500, opposite) become necessary, and a single, heavy blow can render the whole disk extinct. Also, seek times are higher because of the need to get a physical head to a specific place on a disk.

The preconfigured $2199 (as of 10/9/07) Sony VGN-TZ150N/B is a chic little unit that's made for people who like to travel light. Unfortunately, our test model was slow.
The design is spiffy. The VGN-TZ150N/B has a glossy piano-black keyboard, a sturdy carbon-fiber exterior, and a 2.7-pound minimum weight, one of the lightest weights we've encountered among currently tested ultraportables. The 11.1-inch, LED-backlit, 1366-by-768-pixel screen is very bright, which makes it easy to read despite its small size. The individual keys are slightly raised above the surface of the keyboard for fairly easy touch typing. Another nice feature: two dedicated slots for using an SD Card and Memory Stick simultaneously. For long flights, the Instant Mode button lets you play DVD movies, music, or photo slide shows without first starting Windows, saving battery life.

Usually when I'm introduced to a new laptop, it's when it arrives in our office for review. But I first encountered the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ150N ($2,299 direct)—and Sony's TZ Series—when I and a handful of other journalists toasted the line with champagne at a press gala at the top of New York City's Rockefeller Center. This 2.7-pound ultraportable's design is all about luxury. Little expense was spared on its gorgeous LED screen, its carbon-fiber frame, and a new keyboard that's reminiscent of the Sony VAIO VGN-X505ZP. But although the TZ150N's exterior is magnificent, more attention should have been paid to what's inside. Its slow processor and a bloated software suite can put a damper on productivity. If this review were based strictly on design, we'd fete the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ150N with the finest champagne money can buy.

The past few months have seen a series of noteworthy ultraportable laptops trotted out, and joining the Toshiba R500, the Averatec 1579, and the Dell XPS m1330 (technically not an ultraportable but still impressively small), is Sony's new VAIO TZ series. Already out in Japan for a few months, this 11.1-inch laptop is now available in the U.S. and replaces the older 11.1-inch VAIO TX as the new flagship of Sony's VAIO line. Combining an ultrathin, LED-backlit display with an Ultra Low Voltage Core 2 Duo CPU, integrated WWAN, and even an optical drive, this system is amazingly only about an inch thick.
At $2,299, our VAIO TZ 150 N/B is actually at the low end of Sony's six preconfigured TZ models and lacks the solid-state hard drive of the $3,000-plus versions. Still, for more than $2,000, getting only 1GB of RAM feels like a bit of a rip-off. And although the dual-core CPU is a step up from the VAIO TX's pokey yet efficient Intel Core Solo processor, the VAIO TZ150's performance failed to impress, possibly weighed down in part by Sony's penchant for bloatware.

A striking ultraportable that boasts a stunning display, mobile broadband, and good battery life. Just beware of crapware. You might call it executive jewelry. And you'd be right, but the VAIO VGN-TZ150N (which replaces the TX series as Sony's flagship ultraportable) does much more than make a style statement (view photo gallery). This 2.7-pound Vista Business notebook packs in mobile broadband, a webcam, and a DVD burner. And the display's brilliance and enhanced contrast make it perfect for watching movies on the go. You can even order a VAIO TZ with a 32GB solid-state drive for the ultimate in performance and power savings. With all of the features stuffed inside this micro machine, one wonders how Sony found the room to cram in so much trial software, or "crapware." To be fair, Sony isn't alone in peddling entirely too much trial software. But the VAIO VGN-TZ150N behaved as if it were broken before we deleted some programs and prevented others, such as Corel Photo, Napster, and several apps from Adobe, from launching upon startup.

Can we put a price to style? That's the question that confronted us while gathering our thoughts about the new Sony VAIO TZ series. There is much to admire about the design of the Sony TZ series, from its simple, minimalist chassis, pared down to the essentials so as to maintain its ultra portable form factor, yet flexible and not at all fragile. The unique and seamless integration of the battery into the spine and hinge of the notebook such that it really feels like a book, in both its relative weight and size. Its understated elegance is appropriate for the genial facades of the business world, where impressions are everything and of course, the Sony VAIO brand has established itself as a premium, expensive one that speaks of the finer things in life. For those who can afford it, the new Sony TZ series have both the pedigree and the style to impress your business partners and be the classy companion for the high flying executive. Seriously, this is one of the most well engineered notebooks we've come across and it really exudes oodles of class, style and quality.

The Sony Vaio TZ10MN/N is a stylish, dinky laptop, with a display just 11in from corner to corner.
It isn't a quick performer and the price tag is intimidating, but if you need a very light laptop with the battery life to see you through hours of work, the Sony Vaio TZ10MN/N may just be your best choice.
The Sony Vaio TZ10MN/N fires up within just a few seconds, revealing an extremely bright and vibrant screen. The Balanced screen mode prolongs the already excellent battery – we got an excellent three hours' use, with nearly twice that in power-saving mode. Sony supplies only a 1.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, backed by 2GB of DDR RAM and a 100GB drive. This combination powered the Sony Vaio TZ10MN/N to a rather lowly WorldBench 6 speed score of 40 points.

It's generally reckoned that there are four categories of laptop. Desktop replacements weigh in at 4kg, mainstream models are closer to 3kg, thin and light models weigh 2kg to 3kg and then you get the really desirable models called ultraportables that weigh less than 2kg.
So where, we have to ask ourselves, does the Sony VGN-TZ11 WN/B fit into that list, as it weighs an anorexic 1.19kg complete with battery and DVD-RAM optical drive?
Add 400g for the small power adapter when you go travelling, but you can probably do without it on your daily commute. Sony claims the charge will last for seven hours with typical use and we found we got more than four hours of constant use out of the battery, which is very impressive.

The changes Sony has made to the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ31MN/W have been merely cosmetic to keep it in line with other ultraportable notebooks in this price category. However, we remain impressed with what's on offer. While this machine will never compete with the new mini-notebook machines on price, there are no compromises made on performance, usability and design. If you need a state-of-the-art notebook, the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ31MN/W has to be it.

The VAIO VGN-TZ31MN is an evolution of last year's TZ11MN, but that's no bad thing - Sony's first TZ series machine did, after all, walk away with the award for best notebook of 2007 here at TrustedReviews. What the TZ31MN brings to the table is a better specification, that improves performance over the old model. It's also good to see Draft-N Wi-Fi finally making an appearance in a TZ machine. At £1,361 the TZ31MN isn't cheap, but considering what you're getting for that money, it's not expensive either. Despite what the Apple fans may think, Sony's TZ series notebooks are still the best ultra-portable machines you can buy.

Up until recently, Sony had the high-end ultraportable market almost to itself - but that lack of competition didn't stop it achieving great things. The VAIO TZ21 we reviewed in January impressed us with its incredibly low weight and unprecedented portability, even if the price put it well out of most buyers' reach. This impressive ultraportable fills a narrow but handy niche in between the MacBook Air and Lenovo X300.

Sony's VAIO VGN-TZ250N is definitely a very small ultraportable notebook system. Rather than going for an ultra thin profile, it uses a smaller LCD screen to keeps its dimensions down. This is great for those looking for a secondary travel computer that provides a lot of performance. Just be warn that the smaller keyboard size may pose problems over extended use.

Sony’s TZ is a well featured, highly portable notebook with great battery life. Most people will appreciate its sleek, modern design that is stylish yet understated. While the solid state drive speaks to the high tech used in this machine, it adds just as much to the price tag. At over $3,000 USD, the TZ won’t fit in most people’s budgets. In that price range, you can also consider trading some of the battery life for a larger screen and thinner design with competing models like Apple’s MacBook Air and Lenovo’s ThinkPad X300.

The Sony VAIO design team must be ticked. Sony keeps producing geek-chic products like the VAIO VGN-TZ295N ultraportable laptop computer we tested, yet Apple gets all the attention with the MacBook Air. This VAIO looks great, and its screen is phenomenal. But for its lofty price, we'd accept no less than perfection, and it falls just short.

The Sony VAIO VGN-TZ31VN/R (£1799 inc. VAT) is one of the slimmest and lightest laptops around. While pure power is below average, its feature-packed specification is outstanding for such a small laptop, making it a great choice for a life on the move. The 1.3kg chassis is truly ultraportable, so you'll barely notice the weight when travelling. Build quality is excellent, but the thin screen panel is more fragile than its rivals. The 369-minute battery life helps add to the impressive mobility. The keyboard takes a unique approach. All the keys protrude individually though holes in the casing, which prevents too much detritus falling between them.

The VGN-TZ298N also proved to be the best performer in our tests: that solid state disk drive helped it achieve a score of 6661 on the PCMark Vantage “hard disk drive” tests. Additionally, the same drive boosted many of the Sony’s scores on the other PCMark Vantage tests. In the Windows Experience Hard Disk benchmark, however, while the solid state drive provided a slight edge over the other notebooks, the Sony certainly didn’t run away with that benchmark.

Sony: Sony Corporation est l'une des plus grandes sociétés japonaises d'électronique. L'entreprise a été fondée en 1946 sous un autre nom et produisait initialement des poêles à riz.
