Even if most products get forgotten by the media after their review period is done, there are a few that stand out. Gadgets that people still ask about months later. Some that we even decide to hold-on to as daily drivers, and that we get to see age over time. The Galaxy Z Fold5 is one of them. The king of foldables is already due for a refresh, so if you're wondering if it's still worth considering nearly a year later, this video is for you.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 provided a decent display performance, demonstrating strong showings in video and color under the updated protocol. Good readability under sunlight is rare among ultra-premium devices, yet the Z Fold5 achieved good contrast on content viewed even in bright outdoor conditions. Our engineers measured the device’s peak brightness at 1682 nits under bright sunlight. Only slightly detracting from its all-round excellent performance, the Z Fold5’s screen was highly reflective. Its brightness, color, and detail rendering make it a great choice for watching videos. Accurate and reactive, the device felt smooth when browsing the web, and scrolling in the gallery, but sometimes it was prone to reacting to unwanted touches. Note that DXOMARK tested the Z Fold5’s main screen with its protective screen on, per Samsung’s recommendation to consumers.

I’m not keen on the £100 price increase – £1,749 is an awful lot of money for a phone – but if you’re blessed with the funds and you’re a fan of the folding phone/tablet form factor, there isn’t anything better than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 right now. With a lovely folding design, a handful of useful software features, blistering performance and staggering stamina, the Z Fold 5 once more elevates itself above everything else on the market. However, that once insurmountable margin is starting to close, and with stiff competition and an increasing number of rivals appearing at more competitive prices, we might not be recommending it for much longer.

I'm used to incremental upgrades with phones in general from year to year, but I don't feel like we should be there yet with foldable phones. The category is too young for that. And yet, here we are with the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is very much an iterative upgrade. To be clear, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has meaningful improvements. The new hinge results in a sleeker phone, and the latest Snapdragon chip results in a device that's not only faster, but lasts longer on a charge. The brighter display and multitasking enhancements are great as well. But I was expecting Samsung to make bolder moves at a time the competition is heating up. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 arguably holds on to the best foldable phone title, but it does so by playing things safe.

Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 was already a peach of a foldable phone, with just a few rough edges – edges Samsung has smoothed off to great effect here. Deleting the gap means the Z Fold 5 now delivers on design as well as performance and software. The tall and thin outer screen may still be a sticking point for some, though. I think the Google Pixel Fold has an edge on camera image quality – although neither foldable has the versatility of some traditional flagship phone cameras. OnePlus delivers superior multitasking, too. There’s also a sense Samsung played it safe this year, at a time other brands are launching much skinnier handsets. That said, the Fold 5 makes up for it by being. the productivity king, with stylus support and more multitasking options than any folding alternative. It’s as complete a folding phone as Samsung has ever produced.

Is it worth buying? This is expensive equipment, it costs 1400 euro for the 12+256 GB variant, and if you need more internal memory, i.e. 512 GB, the price may increase to 1800 euro. It's not cheap, but this phone can do more than a smartphone with a classic design. For me, it is the first choice smartphone for this season, but I am impatiently waiting for the next generation of Fold, in which I hope to see a place for a stylus, a better battery, faster charging and improved cameras. After all, if you can afford it, why not?

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold5, launched in August, surprised with its design similarities to the Z Fold4. After five months of use, subtle improvements shine. The revamped Flex hinge reduces thickness by 2.4mm, enhancing durability and feel. The brighter inner display and One UI 6 upgrade refine the user experience. Powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 12GB RAM, the device excels in performance, delivering smooth multitasking and impressive gaming. The 50MP camera setup impresses with improved low-light capabilities. Despite a modest 4400mAh battery, optimised management ensures consistent full-day usage. In a foldable landscape, the Galaxy Z Fold5 stands out for its practicality and reliability.

Samsung is still killing the foldable market; they are the undisputed leader in this tech. Other brands make foldable devices, but not at this scale or this level. Samsung continues improving with the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5. Even with Google and OnePlus nipping at the company’s heels, if you want a serious foldable, Samsung is your best choice.

Of course, you should buy the Galaxy Z Fold 5 if you have the money. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a solid book-style foldable phone that may grow on you as you continue using it. The narrow design offers a great in-hand feel, its camera system is decent, and the performance is top-notch. However, there are some caveats here. The Z Fold 5’s slim design makes it run hot and I wish Samsung fixes that. The other reason to think before buying the Z Fold 5 is OnePlus. As I said above, while doing my first impressions, there was no competition to the Samsung foldable. Now, things have changed. There’s now the OnePlus Open in the Indian market, which I used for some time, and its design and creasless screen are the two things to look out for. If that design doesn’t bother you and you like the narrow form factor of Fold 5, then you can go with the Z Fold 5. Or else, you can always read my first impressions of the OnePlus Open here. Now, for Samsung, there are four takeaways.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold5 is a specific model that has a narrow audience and is expensive, but that's what makes it so special. Flagship specs, super screens, and on top of that, Samsung's advanced software that improves performance and allows you to make better use of the foldable form factor, even if the apps aren't designed specifically for it. The only thing that could be improved is the cameras, at least to the level we have in the S23 Ultra.

If you like folding phones and if you want to have a phone that has a very large display, Z Fold 5 will be a very good option for you. This phone supports the pen and also offers some more features to you. However, many people still complain about the size of this phone. Or even they may not like the crease that exists on the internal display. Also, this phone is not resistant to dust penetration yet and for this reason, it may be damaged in some specific conditions. Z Fold5 uses quality cameras and also has high hardware power. For this reason, you can use it for gaming or heavy processing. Samsung’s special user interface for this phone also offers very attractive features to you.

There is the argument to be made that foldable phones are no longer a niche product category, and that it will be just as mainstream as the established single slab design. While this may turn out to be true sometime down the line, book-style foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 will likely be beaten to the punch by clamshell types like the company’s own Galaxy Z Flip5. That being said, the argument can be made for folks who want a single device to do the duties of both a phone and a tablet. And priced at between RM6,799 and RM8,299 depending on the amount of storage space, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 can potentially be more affordable to get this than paying for two devices. And for power users, the larger screen can certainly come in useful. If you consider yourself among said power users, then the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 won’t disappoint.

Foldable device market penetration is only going to increase in the coming years. Now, there are more manufacturers in the flip space and getting it right (OPPO and Moto with the razr 40 Ultra and razr 40) more are surely coming to challenge Samsung in the Folding space… If you’re new to foldable devices though, there is a very steep learning curve. I had to force myself to open the device and use the inner screen for a while. Now I’ve completed the review, I find myself trying to unfold my normal (non-folding) daily driver. But that effort is worth it for the extra functionality and, more importantly; the productivity you’ll gain. At AU$2,599 for the 256GB version and AU$2,799 for the 512GB version, I’d have preferred to see the S-Pen and an official case included. But the reality is not everyone will want or use them, so it would be something of a waste. That and I’m not sure that the new S-Pen — being thinner and smaller than the older style — is actually as useful.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is the best foldable from the firm yet sporting a blazing fast processor, fantastic cameras and its a bit more capable when dealing with water. It really is a marvel of engineering. However, despite the wonder we felt while using the smartphone, the nag that is the starting price of near-as-makes-no-difference R40 000 is extreme. We’re not saying that the smartphone doesn’t demand that price tag, but it’s a bit rich for our tastes, especially with the Galaxy Z Flip5 on the market. The Fold5 felt like Samsung saying “This is what is possible when we pull out all the stops and make a foldable” while the Flip5 looks more like a consumer-friendly version of the Fold5. And that’s fine, but in our local market, the Fold5 makes very little sense.

1.5 lakh rupees is a lot of money for a smartphone, which is why you should take a moment to think about the practicality aspect before jumping on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. It is undoubtedly the best phone for a productivity junkie or a mobile gaming enthusiast, and if you know for sure that you will be taking advantage of this form factor and accept the quirks of living with such a smartphone, then I wholly recommend it. But for many users, it might not be the easiest to live with. Folding and unfolding the phone can become a chore very quickly and for those buying it just for the novelty or bragging rights might regret their decision a few months down the line. If you still wish to spend this sort of money but want something that's easier to live with, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is the next best thing. It too supports the S Pen and has much better cameras. Alternately, you can also look at the new iPhone 15 Pro Max. We're in the middle of testing it and should have a verdict on it very soon.

Reviewers have derided Samsung for its perceived iterative update of the Fold5, but as a newcomer to the Fold line, all the evolutionary upgrades to this year’s phone are appreciated and help to sand the edges of a transition from a single screen slab phone to a foldable. After a month reviewing the Fold5 it’s easy to identify the device as the next evolution of mobile computing but the question many potential customers will run into is, are they ready for that evolution, or is the efficiency peak of slab phones enough? With a price tag as high as $1,995 and Google still figuring out how to handle multi-windowed multitasking, early adopters and regular customers alike might find themselves with a bit of buyer’s remorse if the best they can do is go from the slender Front screen single app experience to the larger Main screen for the same single app experience.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 stands as a testament to Samsung's innovation in the foldable smartphone sector, boasting notable improvements in design and functionality, despite its steep price. Catering primarily to tech enthusiasts and professionals who prioritize a blend of innovation and productivity, it offers a promising multitasking hub that bridges the gap between a tablet and a smartphone. However, potential buyers who value camera excellence and a mature app ecosystem might find more satisfaction in other premium smartphones or by waiting for further advancements in the foldable market.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the foldable smartphone that Samsung originally envisioned, but what we initially got with the original Galaxy Z Fold was far from it. People complained about all sorts of issues and Samsung slowly fixed them with each iteration of the Galaxy Z Fold. With the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Samsung has fixed the last complaint that users had and that was the gap encountered when the smartphone was folded. The foldable smartphone is finally free from all gaps. Everything about this smartphone is top-notch and worth the price you pay for this foldable device. Then whether we talk about the display, chipset, cameras, or battery, all departments seem to be the best possible, the brand makers could offer to a user. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphone is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victuts 2 and IPX8 water resistance. On top of that, it brought other improvements that really enhanced the experience from a user’s perspective.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is, without doubt, an impressively stylish smartphone, with a gorgeous and large folding screen. Some people I’ve shown the phone to have thought that the large screen is amazing, and loved using the phone, others simply thought it was like a tablet, and didn’t see the appeal. Which camp you fall into could be the deciding factor, and if you’re happy with a triple camera system then the Z Fold 5 can deliver great images. However, for those that want the ultimate in camera technology, there are a number of competitors that offer more, with more telephoto zoom, as well as more from the selfie camera. Samsung’s own Galaxy S23 Ultra offers more cameras, with more telephoto zoom, and a better selfie camera, with AF. So whilst the Z Fold 5 is definitely overpriced for the camera features on offer, for those that want a folding tablet phone, then the Fold5 is downright impressive.

In the DXOMARK Audio tests, Samsung’s latest folding flagship device Galaxy Fold5 delivered a great recording performance. An effective audio zoom feature and the impressive recording quality at loud events, such as concerts, were notable improvements over the predecessor Z Fold4. On the downside, the Samsung was quite prone to wind noise when recording in breezy conditions. Recording results were best when using the main camera apps. Quality somewhat dropped with the front camera and office apps. In terms of playback the built-in speakers sounded nice and pleasant, but their placement on the device is not optimized for an immersive listening experience. Overall playback quality was best when listening to music and playing games, and slightly lower when watching movies.

Lastly, the Galaxy Z Fold5 has some improvements in the S Pen department. It's currently the most portable, seamless S Pen for foldable devices. Moreover, Samsung has a new (optional) slim case that minimises the thickness of the S Pen and case for maximum S Pen portability and usability. The Galaxy Z Fold5 also has new S Pen interactions, like previewing a minimised pop-up icon by hovering the S Pen. It also lets you easily distinguish between apps. So far, there's support for multi-instance apps like Samsung Internet, Samsung Notes, My Files, MS Office, and Google Chrome.

There’s no denying that Samsung is the leader in the foldable smartphone segment and that the new Flip 5 and Fold 5 will be the best-selling devices in their respective categories this year as well. That being said, competition from the Motorola Razr+ and a half dozen book-style foldable devices from Chinese manufacturers will definitely close the gap over the next 12 months. Samsung’s slot iteration has allowed the competition to catch and even surpass them when it comes to foldable smartphone design, battery life and performance. Choosing between the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 is fairly simple. If you want the best-performing device, the Fold is the obvious answer, but personally, I’ll be leaving the Fold 5 in the drawer in favor of the Flip 5. It’s smaller, more convenient and feels like I’m using a futuristic device as opposed to the Fold 5 which feels like I’ve just pulled a mini- laptop out of my pocket. That’s not what I’m looking for in a smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is for people who need to multitask a lot, perhaps who travel for work a lot or need to be flexible. It’s also for people with a lot of money who don’t drop things. This is a phone for responsible people. The upgrades over last year’s model are slight, but meaningful, particularly when it comes to the hinge. If you find a Fold 4 selling for a decent discount, you would not be losing much by saving a few dollars. But if this sounds like a phone you think could be an important part of your workflow, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The Fold 5 might be niche, but it will be transformative for the people who can take advantage of all its features.

Fold5 is a good example of the maturation of the folding smartphone category. The device offers all the features of modern flagships, but extends them with an additional large screen, which makes it easier to consume content and work with several programs. At the same time, the user does not feel like a beta tester, but uses a truly top-of-the-line product. The only thing is that the cost of such models is still high even by the standards of modern flagships.

Initially, I was expecting the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 to be largely the same as its predecessor. As it turns out, it did bring a healthy amount of upgrades to the table. While I can’t recommend Z Fold4 users to make the jump, if you’re coming from the Z Fold3, older foldables, or any other smartphone, it’s worth considering as this is still the most optimized large-screen foldable smartphone experience in the market right now.

Samsung hasn’t made that many changes to the Galaxy Z Fold 5, barring the SoC and the hinge. However, the incremental changes that it has made do add up to a much better experience. Image Credit: Firstpost | Mehul Reuben Das ven if you ignore the foldable form factor of the device, this is it, Samsung’s true flagship, the best that Samsung has to offer. It’s more than capable of handling the latest games with ease, and the bonus is that you get to enjoy them on a screen that’s almost like a tablet. And the fact that this whole thing folds up neatly to fit in your pocket is seriously cool and futuristic. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5’s battery performance achieved the best score to date among the foldable devices we have tested so far, even though its score was just below average in our global ranking. The Z Fold5 showed improvements in battery performance compared with its predecessor the Z Fold4, in all subscores, especially in autonomy and efficiency. In moderate use, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5’s battery lasted around 2 days and 6 hours, a result just below average but better than other foldable devices. The Z Fold5 showed good performances when testing use cases unfolded. Discharge currents were low, and autonomy was good when streaming videos and decent when gaming, but also when scrolling social apps (tested folded). Therefore, the device has been well optimized for such screen-on use cases.

Although the Samsung Galaxy Fold5 did not make into the upper regions of the DXOMARK Camera ranking, it delivered decent results across most of our test categories and was capable of capturing nice photos and video clips in most shooting conditions. The Galaxy Z Fold5 camera was also a slight improvement over its predecessor the Z Fold4. Considering that they both have identical camera hardware, the slightly better performance is all down to improved imaging software and tuning. The Galaxy Z Fold5’s high price point, however, makes the device arguably most interesting to those users who appreciate the (still) innovative folding design and large display. But if camera performance is the priority, then other top-end devices with a more conventional form factor offer a better value.

The Samsung Fold 5 is an amazing phone. It’s a Samsung flagship in all its glory. We wouldn’t exactly call it a value-for-money phone but it does feature some insane innovations in the tech department. It’s now tougher than before and the gap is basically seamless when the phone is shut. The phone delivers exceptional performance and the cameras are outstanding as well. However, for the price, it is a bit difficult to recommend to the average Joe out there. With that said, if you absolutely need a fold, this is the one to get.

Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 was already a peach of a foldable phone, with just a few rough edges – edges Samsung has smoothed off to great effect here. Deleting the gap means the Z Fold 5 now delivers. on design as well as performance and software. The tall and thin outer screen may still be a sticking point for some, though. We think the Google Pixel Fold has an edge on camera image quality – although neither foldable has the versatility of some traditional flagship phone cameras.

By any metric, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is pricey. Any phone starting at $1,800 would be whether it folds or not. Despite the improvements, the camera array here veers more toward mid-range performance than it does anything flagship, especially based on Samsung’s own standard. Only six months removed from the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the Fold 5 feels closer to 2022 than it does 2023. That’s not to say it’s incapable of taking really good photos. My own results convinced me it could; just that I was always reminded that I was holding a premium device when shooting with it. One could make a reasonable argument the Fold 5 appeals more to users who won’t prioritize camera performance, which is probably true but doesn’t negate the fact Samsung won’t push the imaging envelope with its foldables. These devices aren’t camera trendsetters, they’re followers. Maybe. Only if the idea of a foldable phone works for you in other ways because the camera is not the main reason to buy this device.

Thanks to good readability and good performances in video and touch, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is the new No. 1 in DXOMARK’s Display ranking. Good readability under sunlight is rare among ultra-premium devices, yet the Z Fold5 achieved very good contrast on content viewed even in bright outdoor conditions. Its brightness, color, and detail rendering make it a great choice for watching videos. Accurate and reactive, the device felt smooth when playing video games, browsing the web, and scrolling in the gallery. The Galaxy Z Fold5 has a wide color gamut. I’m not keen on the £100 price increase – £1,749 is an awful lot of money for a phone – but if you’re blessed with the funds and you’re a fan of the folding phone/tablet form factor, there isn’t anything better than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 right now. That’s not to say Samsung tried cruising on autopilot with the Galaxy Z Fold5. In fact, the changes have all but muted the competition posed by other book-style contenders on the market who are still figuring out their form factor. An even better Fold5 demonstrates a deeper understanding of its users and better longevity of its foldable lineup. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the best foldable of its type out there – yes, despite the minuscule incremental improvements. The foldable formula Samsung has carried through the years is getting refined and polished with every iteration, so much so that this is the absolute best and most versatile folding software experience you can get your hands on. Add to that, blazing-fast performance, impressive battery life, and good cameras – you’ve got yourselves the best foldable in 2023. However, Samsung cannot keep teetering the edge with incremental upgrades since there are too many OEMs out there that are improving by leaps and bounds every year – coming very close to snatching that ‘Best Foldable’ crown.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 comes with areas where it shines brightly. The overall package of what is being offered is very, very appealing, especially for a folding smartphone. Overall, I feel confident in saying that Galaxy Z Fold 5 is likely the best folding smartphone in the market right now. And a lot of it has to do with not adding major upgrades, as counterintuitive as it may sound. Samsung has made the decision to perfect the design they started with instead of feeling the pressure from the rivals and adding a radical new upgrade, that would likely not feel very optimized. With a technology that is still relatively new, I believe this was the right thing to do. And you do see its impact upon using the device. Everything feels polished, the anxiety of using a folding smartphone is much less, and the intuitiveness of the software helps you in growing familiar with such an unusual technology almost overnight. Of course, there are some areas that fail to impress.

If you own a Galaxy Z Fold 4 and you’re happy with it, there is absolutely no reason to upgrade. However, if you have been on the fence about foldables and want to finally take the plunge, I think this is a great option to do so. While the specs remain unchanged from last year and I do wish the cameras offered a bit more, it still has what we’d consider to be a packed spec sheet, even at a starting price of $1799. The software will remain supported for years to come and if you love people getting big-eyed when they see it in your hand, you’ll probably love this phone very much. Yes, if you are someone who loves to scribble notes all day long and use doodles to destress. Given the price for the Fold5 starts at Rs 154,999, this is clearly a phone to flaunt and not one to hide away. If you’ve been eyeing a foldable phone, then it’s absolutely worth buying, and I think you’ll be shocked at how much it will change the way you enjoy and use your phone. Even if you dismissed the Galaxy Z Fold 4, you absolutely should still go out and hold a Z Fold 5 because the hardware alterations have made it feel more “normal” in your hand. Elsewhere, there are few major upgrades, but the ones that are there — faster processor, slightly improved cameras, and brighter screens — make the phone better to use every day. This is what we’ve been waiting for, right? A big folding smartphone that’s suitable for most people to use every day, all day?

Overall, there are not a lot of changes to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 from its predecessor, and it’s rather easy to tell. As such, it’s hard to recommend it especially if you currently own the Galaxy Z Fold4. Even with the trade-in discount, it’s a hard pill to swallow since the phone starts at PHP 98,990 for the 256GB variant. Meanwhile, the 512GB variant retails for PHP 105,990 and the Samsung.com exclusive 1TB variant is priced at PHP 119,990. Nonetheless, we won’t stop you from upgrading from the Galaxy Z Fold4 if you want the more powerful chipset and improved cameras. But if you’re using a Galaxy Z Fold3 or older fold model, then moving to the Galaxy Z Fold5 is definitely a good move. You can even take advantage of the pre-order bonuses such as the free storage upgrade and discounts on the new Galaxy Watch Series 6.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the best book-style foldable still despite competition from Google, Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Those companies might have bested Samsung on hardware, but the joy here is the software. One UI is much better and more useful than any of its rivals. If you can stomach the sky high asking price, you’ll be rewarded by a phone with excellent performance, all-day battery life, great speakers, and oh yeah, a huge folding display that’s great to use. Samsung has dominated the foldable game for a while now, especially in India. That said, 2023 is looking like a marquee year for foldables. The brand’s clamshell Galaxy Z Flip5 (review) already has some competition from the likes of OPPO and Motorola. And as far as the book-style foldables are concerned, Samsung will be facing some very strong competition for the first time – with the likes of OnePlus, possibly Honor, and maybe others as well, throwing their own contenders into the cauldron. In such a scenario, Samsung needs to up its game and take it to a level where its foldable offerings continue to hog the limelight and stay on top. Safe to say that no moulds were broken in the making of this smartphone.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 isn’t the best foldable because it has the right aspect ratio, or the best cameras, or the best software, or anything like that. It’s the best foldable because it strikes the right balance. It has stellar hardware, an aspect ratio that functions well in apps as they exist today, and five generations of experience from the world’s biggest smartphone maker. As far as this specific foldable concept is concerned, this is as good as it gets. Any further refinement is sort of pointless. Samsung really just needs to reinvent the Fold from this point. A new aspect ratio, a better display situation, and maybe, finally, an S Pen silo. The company is clearly working on that, and I think that might be the one to get really excited about. In the meantime, though, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a tremendously good foldable by any measurement.

Colour me impressed! I like the Fold 5, although it is an expensive phone. Compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it feels lighter and more comfortable to hold. The design tweaks, like the sharper edges and seamless folding, make a real difference. In daily use, I found the big screen a treat and can now see the advantage a foldable phone offers. The performance is fantastic, barring the mild heating that occurs while playing games or video recording for prolonged duration. Camera performance is in line with what you expect from an ultra-premium phone and battery life is solid. The big question, though, is the price. It is an expensive phone at a starting price of Rs 1,64,999. But do understand that essentially you are paying for the novelty of the foldable technology, and all the advantages it brings to consumers.

We are conflicted about the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5. On the one hand, it’s clear that these are still the best folding phones available in the US. But on the other hand, these are fairly iterative products. Putting aside the new and improved fold-flat hinges, upgraded Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and larger 3.4-inch cover screen on the Z Flip5, the rest of the specs are mostly unchanged. Depending on your point of view, this could be a good thing, though. Samsung's got a winning formula, and it's been refining it with each generation. Ultimately, these are extremely competent foldable handsets that deliver a superior user experience and benefit from Samsung’s expertise. So, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? While that’s true, we can’t help but think that the Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 would benefit from better cameras and higher-capacity batteries.

Even with a set of enhancements that looks modest on paper, Samsung knocked it out of the park this time around. The Z Fold 5’s great inner display is perfect for reading, watching, and playing things. In addition, its strong set of multitasking features actually justifies having a foldable display in the first place. Combine all of that with great performance and battery life, and little things like the limited utility of Flex Mode or the phone being a bit too tall don’t matter that much. From this point on, Samsung is officially the standard-bearer for flagship foldables.

The Galaxy Fold5 offers the best foldable experience on the market - while its hardware seems to trail certain competitors there's no matching its complete software package. The new S-Pen Slim Case is an excellent addition to the Fold accessory lineup, too, and it has become an instant must-have for the power users. The Fold5 offers ingress protection, displays, performance, even cameras. Its battery life is solid even if charging is rather slow, and so are the speakers and the connectivity options. We applaud Samsung for the multi-tasking implementation on the Fold5 and all neat software tricks available throughout One UI 5.1.1 Plus, Android 14 with One UI 6 are not that far away and the Fold5 should be among the first to get it.

Overall, though, the Fold 5 comes out just ahead. It’s meaningfully lighter, which makes a difference when you’re using it folded for long periods of time. There are more multitasking options and ways to take advantage of that big inner screen, and battery life is better. Those aren’t huge differences, but they’re important ones when you’re talking about a folding phone you’ll want to get the most out of. Samsung may still have the lead in the foldable race, but the gap is closing. If it wants to stay ahead, it’ll have to do more next year than just nip a few millimeters and pop in a new chipset. For now, though, that’s just enough.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 sets a new bar for flagship foldables with the best Snapdragon processor currently in the market, powerful rear cameras and superb displays paired with a lighter, slimmer chassis. Add in excellent software support with OS updates up to 4 years and security updates for up to 5 years in paired with a slick, sleek user experience and you have the epitome of what a foldable flagship phone ought to be. Those who haven’t hopped onto the foldable phenomenon and need a heavy-hitting foldable for productivity and entertainment tasks will appreciate what the Fold5 has to offer though those who already own its predecessor can consider it somewhat of an optional purchase.

For 2023, Samsung has updated the hinge on their book-style Android foldable phone, and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 now folds flat. It features a 7.6” flexible AMOLED 2X inner display and a 6.2” outer AMOLED 2X display, both with 1750 nits of peak brightness. The phone supports the optional S Pen, has Samsung DeX and runs Android with One UI on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU. It faces new competition from the Google Pixel Fold this year in the US.

For years, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line has been the king of big foldable phones. But that was due in large part to a lack of competition. With the arrival of the Pixel Fold, Samsung’s crown is in jeopardy. The question is, has the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 done enough to fend off Google’s initial salvo?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Google Pixel Fold are both very capable foldable phones. The new Samsung Z Fold 5 sports a lighter design, brighter display and a new hinge that closes fully flat. But the Pixel Fold sports a thinner design, great cameras and a wider and comfier cover display. So which is the best foldable phone? Our Galaxy Z Fold 5 vs Pixel Fold face-off will show you.

As someone who’s still optimistic about foldable devices and has owned the last three generations of Samsung’s flagship flexible phone, I can't help but like the Z Fold 5. It’s faster and sleeker, with a brighter main display and even longer battery life than before. The question I wrestle with is: How many tweaks and updates should we really expect from a device now in its fifth generation? The Z Fold 5 has matured a lot since that initial concept device came out back in 2019, and Samsung’s new Flex Hinge is an important milestone that people like me have been waiting for. But in the end, there’s not a ton the phone can do now that it couldn’t before. It’s just a bit leaner, as if the old model spent the last 12 months in the gym. And with a price that’s still extremely high, I don’t think the Z Fold 5 is doing enough to woo anyone who's not already sold on foldables.

Before you can even entertain the possibility of hauling around a 13.4mm-thick phone, you have to come to terms with the price. Samsung’s pricing has remained consistent across five generations, and now Google has a foldable at the same price with the Pixel Fold ($1799 at Amazon). But at $1,800, the Z Fold 5 costs almost three times as much as the Galaxy S23, which is a perfectly fine phone that will do everything you need if all you want is access to messaging, web browsing, decent photos, and other smartphone essentials. If you want the most powerful mobile computing experience on the market, you have to be a little frivolous. You do get something for your money, though. Multitasking on a foldable like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is stupendous, enabling levels of productivity previously only possible on tablets and computers. The S Pen support is also great for taking notes and drawing. While there’s still sadly no dock, using a stylus with the Fold feels like a game changer for this emerging form factor. I also ap

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the best large foldable phone you can buy today. It's got the best-built hardware, the best-designed software, and the widest accessory support. In a vacuum, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 would deserve the same 4.5 score as its predecessor. However, 2023 is proving to be a foldable season, with more and better alternatives than ever before, including Google's Pixel Fold. The Galaxy Z Fold 4's review conclusion noted that it didn't bring many new features compared to its predecessor, and in 2023 not only did Samsung double-down on that, many important specifications made a comeback in 2023. We could have forgiven Samsung for the lack of updates in general if the Galaxy Z Fold 5 were cheaper than the Fold 4, another issue Antoine Engels mentioned in his Fold 4 review. Samsung cannot play the "cool factor" card anymore, despite how hard its marketing department tries.

And finally – do I think the Z Fold5 is worth the price? It’s actually the same price as the Fold4 here in Malaysia – and I’d say that you should know what you’re getting before committing. I have seen a lot of posts in the Z Fold group on Facebook that are arguing whether or not the Fold5 is a good upgrade or not. In summary, there are only 2 camps of opinion. The first camp says it’s not worth the upgrade because the only differences are the chipset and the hinge – which we have proven in this video that there are actually a lot of things that are different – and the other camp says that both the chipset and hinge improvements are worth the upgrade. For me, I do kinda lean towards the second camp, especially if you’re upgrading from the Fold3 or the Fold2. We’ll provide even more data to help you decide whether or not to upgrade from the Fold4 to the Fold5 as we’ll have a comparison coming in a week or two.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is hands down the best large foldable you can get in the US at the moment. It's larger and heavier than traditional phones, but it rewards you with two sharp screens, cutting-edge performance, abundant connectivity options, S Pen compatibility, and truly terrific multitasking software. The Z Fold 5 essentially attempts to be a tablet and a laptop in addition to just a phone and it does a mostly impressive job at each. It handily beats the Pixel Fold at everything except photography, though the two are pretty evenly matched there. If you're a Fold 4 owner, there is no compelling reason to upgrade unless you really want that flatter design. However, if you have an older Galaxy Z Fold or are looking to make the jump to a tablet-style folding phone, the Z Fold 5 is our new Editors' Choice winner in the category.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is so similar to its predecessor that you’d struggle to tell the difference without the improved hinge removing the annoying gap. And that’s because most specs, from the general design to the displays to cameras and even the battery, are the same as its predecessor, making the fact it costs £100/$150 more at £1749/$1799 a hard pill to swallow. Sure, a slightly lighter, slimmer design and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 power are excellent additions to an already premium foldable, but I’m not sure it’s worth that much more, especially in a more crowded foldable market with cheaper options like the Honor Magic Vs available. It’s true that Samsung has made serious waves with third-party app support, which means I’ve taken more advantage of that inner display than ever before, but that’s not exclusive to the latest foldable – it’ll benefit all recent generations of Z Fold with the 7.6-inch display.

Now for the final verdict on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Should you buy this phone? It’s a good phone, though it’s price is pretty high, and it’s not a huge upgrade over the Galaxy Z Fold 4. So if you are looking to upgrade from the Fold 4, I’d say hold on for another year. Unless that gap from the older hinge really bothers you. If so, then you want to upgrade before August 11, before these incredible deals go away. There’s a lot to like here, but still some things to dislike, unfortunately. Samsung has kind of gone the Apple way of innovating and changing things. Not changing things to much, and not trying to get you to upgrade every year. But to make sure they have a great phone available, when it’s time to upgrade. As most won’t upgrade every year or even every other year. And this is a good idea for Samsung as well as Apple. That’s how the two have stayed on top of the smartphone market for so long.

It’s clear that the Fold5 has some genuine advantages, and that Samsung has ironed out most of the niggles I had with its earliest foldies, but does that equate to a $2600 value? In almost all core phone tasks, I’d argue the $1000 phone is just as competent, and remains easier to handle. But when it comes to its specific strengths — multitasking, big screen experiences, stylus use, flexible photography viewfinders — standard phones can’t compete. It all depends on whether those strengths appeal to you.

It’s a bit too early to tell but Galaxy Z Fold5’s similar layout to its predecessor makes switching over a cinch as I already have had the muscle memory of its button placement. Getting it swapped over took an hour or so via Samsung Smart Switch but everything migrated over in a smooth fashion. As expected, the phone has a modest array of updates especially in regards to productivity and multitasking with the new One UI 5.1.1 offering an enhanced taskbar that allows for up to four recent apps to appear rather than simply two in prior versions. There is also a new gesture where you can tap and hold down a snippet of text or an image with one finger and then use another finger to open up a new hand to drag and drop it into a new app. It takes some practice but it’s immensely useful.

Despite all this, I'm still a Galaxy Z Fold 5 fan. It's fun to hold and use, it takes nice, if over-vibrant photos, and it's about as fast and responsive as a handset can get. If this is your first Fold, it's a winning choice; if you already own a Galaxy Z Fold 4, hold onto it and wait for the Z Fold 6.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is ultimately a minor upgrade over the Z Fold 4. But it's a more polished package than the Google Pixel Fold or Honor Magic Vs – Samsung's main competition in the West – and it's also the only foldable with stylus input (albeit sold separately at additional cost). So while no book-style foldable has nailed it yet, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the closest to it. With seriously solid build quality, bright screens, stacks of power, and a capable interface, not to mention day-long battery life, while it isn't a revelation, if you're looking to dip your toe in the book-style foldable waters, then it's still the one to beat... for now. But can Samsung get away with another year of incremental Z Fold updates when it comes to the Z Fold 6 in 2024? Not with the way the competition is heating up. So while the Z Fold 5 is 'Best in the West' right now, it'll be fascinating to watch the foldable phone market progress in the not-so-distant future. And if you can't wait until then, this Samsung is the one to buy.

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold 5 at its Galaxy Unpacked event, it highlighted a handful of changes to the phone's design. The Z Fold 5 has a new hinge that lets the phone close completely shut; Samsung calls it the Flex Hinge and claims it helps make the foldable phone more durable. Another improvement is Z Fold 5's folding screen, which is brighter than the one on last year's Galaxy Z Fold 4. But at $1,800, is it worth it? CNET's Patrick Holland has tested the Galaxy Z Fold 5; here's his review.

So, is the Galaxy Z Fold 5 a good foldable phone? Yes. If you are looking for a premium foldable experience, it delivers in speed, style, quality, and functionality. But so does the Galaxy Z Fold 4 — if you have the 2022 model, you can skip this one for sure. If you are looking for your first foldable phone — this is definitely an option, but we can't fully commit to recommending it due to the external screen. At the office, we are torn — some hate how narrow it is, and consider it is crippling the overall experience. Others have learned to use it or didn't mind it in the first place. So, that's something you need to experience to be able to evaluate — maybe hands-on in a store.

Is the Z Fold 5 worth upgrading from the Z Fold 4? Nope -- maybe from the Z Fold 3. But if you're contemplating upgrading from the original Fold or Z Fold 2, this is a substantial upgrade. You get better cameras, a faster processor, longer battery life, better durability, IPX8 water-resistance, S Pen support and a phone that weighs nearly 30 grams lighter. At this point, the original Fold and Z Fold 2 are also hitting the end of Samsung's promised software and security updates. I don't expect people who have an older Fold to upgrade to the Z Fold 5, but Samsung and carriers make it tempting with aggressive discounts for trade-ins.

If you're shopping for a foldable — particularly in the United States, where your options remain pretty limited — the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a great option. It does everything you'd want it to do pretty well, and even if there are plenty of nitpicks to be had, they mostly come from a place of love. I like using this phone, and the couple of changes Samsung did bother to make this year only made it better. And if you're coming to the Z Fold 5 from an older Galaxy S phone or another standard slab-shaped device, I think you'll find a lot to love here. That said, I would caution any Galaxy Z Fold 4 — or, potentially, even Galaxy Z Fold 3 owners — from dropping the cash to pick this one up, trade-in or no.

Much like the foldable monster that came before it, this device is the most over-the-top smartphone experience on the market today. It costs a pretty penny, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is far enough ahead of the competition that you won't likely regret spending the cash. If you already have a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, it'd probably be wise to just stick with what you've got, as it'll be difficult to tell the difference — save the flatness of the fold. If you've already purchased a Google Pixel Fold, you have a difficult decision ahead of you. Do you fold like a pamphlet, or do you fold like a passport? In any case, as with any foldable, your decision will come down to necessity. Do you want to be able to expand your smartphone whenever you want, or does it make more sense for you to stick to the classic flatness of a standard smartphone?

Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, with a full comparison vs Google's Pixel Fold for the camera tech, gaming performance, split-screen features and more! My full review of both this Samsung foldable and the Google Pixel Fold are coming soon but for now here's a full tour of the features and specs. Those cameras are quite similar as far as megapixels etc go but produce very different photos - the Galaxy Z Fold 5 once again pumps out brighter, bolder shots. A lighter and brighter device than last year’s model, the Fold5 accompanies the newly announced Flip5 as Samsung’s newest flagship foldable phones. The larger and more powerful of the duo, Samsung positions the Fold5 as both a productivity workhorse and a gaming powerhouse. Also announced at the company’s Unpacked event were the Galaxy S9 Tab and Galaxy Watch6, rounding out Samsung’s major mobile devices for the year. While not a drastic change design-wise, the Fold5 contains a lot of incremental upgrades. On the inside and outside, it shares a lot of DNA with the highly-touted Galaxy S23 range. It’s this and various enhancements that make the Fold5 an interesting proposition if you’re looking for a big-screen phone that still fits in a pocket. For the fifth generation of its flagship fold phone, Samsung created a new hinge that makes the Z Fold 5 even thinner and more compact than before. It has a handful of new multitasking gestures for improved productivity and a brighter 1,750 nit main screen. For nearly a year, I’ve dual-wielded Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 4 and Flip 4 as a daily-driver one-two punch for workday productivity and weekend portable playtime. Same as the Fold 3 and Flip 3 before that; and the second and first generations before. But this year, for the first time in American foldable history, Samsung faces competition in both categories. On the clamshell front, Motorola’s Razr+ is a real affront thanks to its larger … front. At the same time, the Galaxy Fold’s large-format dominance is threatened by the Google Pixel Fold and the upcoming OnePlus foldable. Well Samsung invited me to an early hands-on at its pop-up experience center in Herald Square to see the heat it’s bringing to compete: the meaningfully different Galaxy Flip 5 … and the exceedingly familiar Galaxy Fold 5.

I’m not keen on the £100 price increase – £1,749 is an awful lot of money for a phone – but if you’re blessed with the funds and you’re a fan of the phone/tablet form factor, I doubt there will be anything better than the Galaxy Z Fold 5, at least for a little while longer. Hopefully, as the technology continues to improve and evolve, foldable asking prices might drop down a peg or two but, as it stands, a steady cost increase every year isn’t the sort of thing we like to see. For most people, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will remain a handset to admire from afar rather than being a must-have purchase, and this is a huge shame. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is available to preorder from 26 July, with a release date scheduled for 11 August. Watch this space for our full verdict very soon.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has appeal in a number of areas. Of all the folding phones, I think it offers the most mature experience. It offers all those options that Samsung brings to its phones, while also handling apps better than Google's Pixel Fold. I expect that to change over the coming year with developers optimising apps for a better experience, but at the time of writing, it's the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 I'd choose from the two. There aren't huge upgrades here from the Z Fold 4. There's still loads of power, great displays and a capable camera system - and that could make the Z Fold 5 feel little more than iterative. But it's clear that the hinge redesign to make this phone fold flat is how the Z Fold should have always been. That makes the Galaxy Z Fold 5 look better, feel better and deliver on that folding phone promise.

But if you dislike the outer screen’s thinness or the device’s unavoidable bulk, think about whether a folding phone like this is really for you.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has been unveiled at Samsung Unpacked 2023, and it represents a collection of small but important changes to Samsung's flagship folding phone, both inside and out, that add up to a device that looks better, feels better and, in my brief time with it, appears to work maybe a little better. Looked at in the context of the new kid in town, the Google Pixel Fold, Samsung's Fold update might be deemed disappointing. Samsung has not made the cover screen wider, nor given it the more user-friendly form factor of a regular smartphone screen. It hasn't vastly changed the materials, and even the cameras (under-the-screen, cover screen, and rear array) are completely unchanged from last year. I wouldn't suggest that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 was developed in a vacuum but it's also clear to me that Samsung didn't create it with the Pixel Fold in mind.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is so similar to its predecessor that you’d struggle to tell the difference without the improved hinge removing the annoying gap. And that’s because most specs, from the general design to the displays to cameras and even battery life, are the same as its predecessor, making the fact it costs £100/$150 more at £1749/$1799 a hard pill to swallow. Sure, a slightly lighter, slimmer design and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 power are excellent, but I’m not sure it’s worth that much more. It could be that I’ll change my mind after spending more time with the foldable, but my gut says – especially compared to the Pixel Fold and Honor Magic V2 – that Samsung has fumbled the foldable ball in 2023.

Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 was already a peach of a foldable phone, with just a few rough edges. On first inspection, the Z Fold 5 appears to have smoothed those edges off to great effect. The gap is gone, the crease less visible, the inner bezels barely-there. The tall and thin outer screen might still be a sticking point for some, and we can’t help but feel certain rivals now have the edge on design and dimensions, but the Fold 5 makes up for that with all the power you’d expect from a 2023 flagship. It’s also still the productivity king, with stylus support and more multitasking options than any folding alternative. We’ll be keeping a close eye on battery life, and checking whether it can best the Pixel Fold on the photography front once we get hold of one for a full review, but early impressions are this feels as complete a folding phone as Samsung has ever produced.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is powered by a 4,400mAh battery, which again is the same as before. It can be charged using a cable at 25W, or wirelessly at 15W. Samsung has also announced a revised S Pen for the Galaxy Fold 5. It's called the S Pen Fold Edition and it has a slimmer design which is 40 percent slimmer than the one used for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, the phone does not have a dedicated silo for it which means it will have to be carried separately or with the optional folio case. Unlike the smaller Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 upgrades can mainly be described as refinements. Whether they add to the phone's overall value and if it is worthy of an upgrade over the already excellent Galaxy Z Fold 4, is something we know after we have reviewed it.

Samsung's next-gen foldables are now here - the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 arrive with improved hinges, display tweaks, and the mandatory internal upgrades. Also new are a trio of Galaxy Tab S9 tablets and two Galaxy Watch6 models (or four, depending on how you count). An eventful Unpacked once again, then. Perhaps the biggest change in the new foldables is they now fold with no gap between the two halves - no more wedge. Samsung had been putting off a gapless design for several generations, making the bendy Galaxies appear dated and prototype-like next to a crowd of better-looking offerings from pretty much any other company that's taken a crack at foldables. This changes with generation 5.

Look, I know I’ve been giving Samsung a hard time for the lack of compelling updates and hardware changes. It’s just that the company basically made foldables a thing and in the fifth iteration of the Fold and even the Flip, it seems Samsung is resting on its laurels. That’s not to say the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a bad phone. It’s not. In fact, it’s a top-tier premium phone with plenty of bells and whistles that will tantalize most of the foldable curious out there. Thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, it’s poised to be one of the most powerful Android smartphones out there if not the most powerful foldable. The displays hit the 3B’s: big, bold and bright, the multitasking is top notch and I’d definitely like to play with all of the phone’s cameras. And if it can last at least 12 hours, Samsung makes a strong case.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 don’t really move the needle when it comes to foldables, which is a real shame considering how strong the competition has been this year. For the Z Fold 5 in particular, I was really expecting better cameras or at least a larger battery, as those were two things I found lacking with the Z Fold 4. However, the Z Flip 5’s larger cover display does at least bring a whole new dimension, and I can’t wait to really explore all the things it can do. The only slight issue is the price of the Z Flip 5 in particular. Even discounting the base price naturally jumping up thanks to Samsung discontinuing the 128GB model, the flip phone is still RM100 more than it was before, though the extra utility of that new cover display does help make up for that.

As much as Samsung wants to close the gap when clamping these phones shut, it appears reluctant to thicken the rear camera bump to accommodate something better. Could a periscope telephoto lens be possible? I would think so. How about a larger image sensor for the main camera that befits the premium category these phones sit in? If the question is whether or not people would accept bigger bumps in the camera module, then maybe Samsung could figure out what’s ultimately acceptable. The joy with these phones is the ability to orient and position them almost effortlessly in some cases — a huge advantage over the typical phone slabs. But then the pendulum largely swings the other way when it comes to actual output. If you love foldable phones and mobile photography, you’re left with a tough choice in both the Fold 5 and Flip 5 since both do advance the former, but the latter is left to languish.

Samsung has unveiled its latest lineup of devices, including the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. I got the chance to check out the handsets before their official announcement to share my thoughts on Samsung’s new offerings. If you want to know more about the Galaxy Z Flip 5, check out this hands-on. Around the world, foldables are becoming all the rage, with companies like Oppo, Vivo, Royole and Huawei releasing foldable devices of their own. Still, none of these smartphones have officially made their way to the Canadian market. While Google has the Pixel Fold and there are ways of getting the device in Canada, even that phone isn’t officially available here.

My first impressions of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 are more than mixed. The concept itself is still cool, that's for sure. If I had $2,000 to blow on a smartphone, I wouldn't buy any other model than the Galaxy Z Fold 5, or the Galaxy Z Fold 4. And therein lies the problem. To say that Samsung has focused on optimization rather than innovation is a huge understatement. It's the kind of thing you'd say in an iPhone review to avoid offending Apple, at the risk of jeopardizing your invitation to Cupertino in September. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 doesn't carry enough innovation. You get the same screen, albeit a little brighter, not to mention exactly the same camera module. The same battery and charging technology as well as design are also part of the deal, with the latter being just thinner and flatter. Samsung will surely say that these tiny improvements conceal an immense amount of R&D investment coupled with technological prowess.

Ultimately, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be a solid foldable, we believe, but if you have a Z Fold 4 or even a Z Fold 3 — no need to rush for an upgrade. People that are looking to grab their first foldable, or upgrade from an older or inferior version should be pretty happy with the Z Fold 5. In any case, Samsung will be introducing the next step to the foldable future in about a month or so, and we will definitely be here to check our expectations against the actual product.

Qualcomm Adreno 740:
