The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 is awfully similar to last year's model, but the AMOLED upgrade sets it apart and makes watching movies and playing games a delight. You pay for it with worse battery life, though, and this Android tablet still can't match Apple's slates in terms of speed.

As a premium 11in Android tablet, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is pretty much in a field of its own. No one else is making tablets like this right now, with its unique combination of power, premium design, and a beautiful AMOLED display. Of course, Apple’s iPad range needs to be acknowledged here, as the equivalent iPad Pro continues to reign supreme. It’s more powerful and has much better software support than Samsung’s tablet. Even so, the Galaxy S9 puts up a great fight and wins out in some significant ways. It’s £100 cheaper, is properly water and dust-resistant, has a more vibrant AMOLED display and comes with a brilliant stylus as part of the package. If you’re not invested in the Apple ecosystem, and you’re after a powerful and flexible tablet that’s ready for sketching and note-taking right out of the box, there’s no better 11in option out there than the Galaxy Tab S9.

It may not look that different from its predecessor on the surface, but a host of upgrades to display tech, processing power and even water resistance make the Galaxy Tab S9 one of the most capable Android tablets on the market, and unlike the more premium S9 Plus and S9 Ultra, it remains relatively compact.

The Galaxy Tab S9 gets practically everything right. A premium, portable, sturdy design, an absolutely delightful screen, performance in spades, all-day battery life, and seriously impressive sound. The only thing that makes me hesitate automatically recommending it to everyone, is its price. Starting at $799/£799, there is definitely no shortage of cheaper Android tablets out there. If you're just looking for a non-Apple tablet to watch films, play some games, and shoot some emails while browsing the web, I reckon you could save yourself a few hundred pounds with a cheaper option, like the OnePlus Pad or even the older Tab S8. For those who want iPad-like quality (and don't want to dive into the Apple ecosystem), then I have no hesitation in recommending the Galaxy Tab S9, even over its more expensive S9+ and S9 Ultra siblings.

I felt the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 set a new standard for Android tablets in 2022, and now the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 has upgraded that standard in the best way possible: By upgrading the display. As much as I wish the Galaxy Tab S9 was more powerful and more power-efficient given that Samsung is asking $100 more for it than last year's model, I can't complain about the company's decision to upgrade the display because the move to AMOLED makes everything you do on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 look better than it did on last year's model. Of course, you are now paying upwards of $800 for the privilege of owning one. If that feels a bit too steep I think you can still get a lot of use out of a new Galaxy Tab S8, which has a worse screen but lasts longer and costs $100 less (or more) new. Apple's 2022 iPad Air is also a great alternative if you don't mind iPadOS, since it costs less than a new Galaxy Tab S9 yet delivers better performance, better cameras and access to Apple's App Store.

It is very difficult, at any budget, to find a tablet that can do ‘everything’, meaning one that works just as well as a couch companion as it does as a work slate. It’s a pleasure then to report that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Plus comes pretty close to being that ideal, and a lot closer than much of the Android competition. With a slim and svelte design, it is comfortable to hold, its display is genuinely a treat to use and its speakers are loud and incredibly clear. The custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor inside is powerful, and the battery life is always enough to make it through a full day. If you are in the market for a premium tablet, this should be in your sights. There are drawbacks, of course.

This tablet offers modest mid-range cameras. A 13Mp main camera on the back and a 12Mp wide-angle camera on the front are what’s offered in this basic model. They are primarily intended for documentation, AR and video calls rather than for photography on par with a Galaxy S23 mobile phone. The battery is slightly smaller in the Tab S9, at 8400mAh. If you choose the S9 Plus model instead, you get 10800 mAh. You can use the tablet all day, at least if you don’t use heavy games or productivity apps to any great extent. Charging speedily should be possible with up to 45W of USB charging. You’ll have to get your own charger, though, because it’s not included. I was only allowed to borrow a 25W charger so I have not been able to test even faster charging. Using this, an empty battery takes about 1.5 hours to fully charge.

All versions of the Tab S9 have the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Samsung, which is clocked a touch higher than non-Samsung versions of the chip. Some Samsung phones throttle too heavily when they heat up, but the company’s tablets have a lot more thermal headroom. The Tab S9 only loses a little speed when it warms up, making it a good option for gaming, though peak performance for multitasking and professional design work is not remotely comparable to the Apple M-series iPads. The Galaxy Tab S9 starts at $799.99 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. A version with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is available for $920, but we suggest you stick with the base model.

Compared to last year’s Tab S8 lineup, there are two tangible upgrades in the S9s: a new Qualcomm processor that promises to be a little faster (though speed and performance were never really issues in last year’s tablets), and IP68 water and dust resistance, just like most modern smartphones. That means you can use these tablets around a pool or bathtub, or more likely, you just won’t have to worry about life’s little mishaps at the coffee shop or when a toddler surprises you with their range when throwing a sippy bottle. I don’t know of any other non-rugged tablets that have this kind of water resistance — Android, iPad, or otherwise — so it’s a legitimate differentiator for Samsung’s models and a nice thing to have.

The Galaxy Tab S9 addresses all weak points of the Galaxy Tab S8 and builds multiple floors upon the existing foundation. You get a compact and wicked-powerful Android tablet with a very beautiful screen and a functional S Pen as part of the package, with plenty of storage, and a very functional interface with some serious multi-tasking capabilities. Surely, not all is perfect: I'd have loved richer sound, a slightly better camera, and last but not least, a decent haptic feedback, but those are minor gripes in the greater context of what makes a tablet better than average. Yes, the Galaxy Tab S9 is definitely a super-decent Android slate that should be considered by just about anyone who's even remotely considering of getting a tablet in 2023. At $800, it's not an affordable slate, but Samsung makes it easy to save with the multitude of deals and promotions is usually hosts, so it's worth checking out this compact powerhouse.

The market is awash with dozens of affordable Android tablets, but if you're after something in the high-end space, Samsung remains one of the few options available. If an 11" iPad Pro competitor is something you're dying for, I think the Galaxy Tab S9 is it. The screen looks great, it's thin and light with great battery life, and has plenty of accessories that'll let you build it out into the ultra-portable laptop replacement you've always dreamed of owning. But I'd really consider what you're going to use this tablet for before dropping $800 on one. Can you learn to live with an LCD panel? Do you need a bundled S Pen? Are you going to be frustrated if your accessories don't last longer than one generation, despite how much you've paid for them?

Mobile devices are getting better and better. This includes tablets, which can do most things a PC can. Already, some people are using tablets as laptop replacements. But what tablet should you pick for work, movies, and maybe some gaming on the side? If you ask us, the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series tablets fit the bill. They're high-performance tablets suitable for students, content creators, business users, and anyone who wants a great entertainment device. Here are some reasons to get a Galaxy Tab S9 tablet:

Well, none of that nonsense exists with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series. Materially, the three tablets are all premium-tier Android tablets that want to be the Apple iPad Pro for Android users. They are nearly identical in terms of components and parts quality, only differing in display size, battery size, and weight. If you’re really nitpicky, the regular Tab S9 comes with 8GB RAM, while the Tab S9+ and Tab S9 Ultra offer 12B RAM. But you’re not getting any ‘less’ if you pick the Galaxy Tab S9 over the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra now.

Of course, if you already know that a nearly 15-inch display is too much real estate, you’ll probably be much happier with the Galaxy Tab S9 or S9 Plus. I think the smallest 11-inch slate is my personal sweet spot. It’s large enough for an immersive Netflix experience yet small enough to slip in and out of a backpack throughout a long day of travel. Factor in the larger speakers, upgraded connectivity options, and improved display, and you can leave your laptop in your carry-on. At the end of the day, however, the question is whether or not you should spend the money to upgrade to one of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 models. As always, it depends on which tablet you’re coming from.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 is the smallest and therefore most affordable of Samsung's 2023 premium tablets. It brings with it the quality expected from this grade of device, with what appears to be a great display and I'm sure that the Snapdragon hardware in this tablet will deliver a slick and fast Android experience. Much of that experience will be defined by the software and previous editions of this tablet have been popular and well received. I expect the same thing of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 - and I'll deliver a full verdict on this tablet once I've had the chance to fully review it.

Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series at Samsung Unpacked 2023, with the standard Tab S9 and S9 Plus arriving alongside the Tab S9 Ultra (head over to our Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra review for an early look at that device, as well as our Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 pre-orders page for the best deals live now). We’ve already seen both the Tab S9 and S9 Plus in person, but we haven’t spent enough time with either tablet to come to a full verdict on their pros and cons just yet. Mind you, the upgrades on offer here are clear: for the Tab S9, you’re getting a brighter screen, a faster processor, a slightly bigger battery, more RAM options and an IP68 water resistance rating. For the larger Plus model, the improvements are mostly the same, though instead of a battery size increase and display upgrade, Samsung has included a beefier ultra-wide sensor on the rear of the tablet. The Tab S9 Plus is available in 512GB storage options, too.

It’s great to see the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 get an OLED display and a faster chipset than its predecessors. Because of those improvements, it feels more like a premium product — only for hundreds of dollars less than its bigger siblings. Thanks to its sturdy build, slim design and sharp and vibrant display, the Galaxy Tab S9 could potentially be one of the best tablets of 2023. We felt the Galaxy Tab S8 set a new standard for Android tablets when it launched last year, and perhaps that standard will be shattered when the Tab S9 hits store shelves. We’ll find out soon when we get a chance to review the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, so check back to find out!

The Galaxy Tab S9 is a sleek tablet in looks and performance – at least after spending a short amount of time with the device. The tablet makes some sacrifices to fit its £799 RRP, including packing fewer cameras, lower RAM and storage and a smaller battery than the other tablets in the new S series. However, the same bright screen, flagship chipset and magnetic S-Pen make the S9 seem like an excellent choice for anyone in need of a smaller tablet to stream content, browse the web and scribble down notes on the go.

Samsung's next-gen foldables are now here - the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 arrive with improved hinges, display tweaks, and the mandatory internal upgrades. Also new are a trio of Galaxy Tab S9 tablets and two Galaxy Watch6 models (or four, depending on how you count). An eventful Unpacked once again, then. Perhaps the biggest change in the new foldables is they now fold with no gap between the two halves - no more wedge. Samsung had been putting off a gapless design for several generations, making the bendy Galaxies appear dated and prototype-like next to a crowd of better-looking offerings from pretty much any other company that's taken a crack at foldables. This changes with generation 5.

It’s taken Samsung a while to update its premium tablet range, but with most of the changes fairly minor in nature, this generation doesn’t look like one to get particularly excited about. Dust and water resistance are nice but less essential for a tablet than a phone. And while it’s great that the entry-level model now has an OLED screen, that’s probably something it ought to have had in the previous generation anyway. Plus, those prices do look rather high, with the Tab S9 starting at £799, the S9 Plus at £999 and the Tab S9 Ultra at £1,199. Still, it’s too early to deliver a definitive verdict, so we’ll be holding back from doing so until we get our hands on review samples. If you can’t wait for that, however, all three tablets will be up on the Samsung website for pre-order from Wednesday, 26 July, and on sale officially from Friday, 11 August.

The Galaxy Tab S9 addresses all weak points of the Galaxy Tab S8 and builds upon its existing strengths. You get a compact and wicked-powerful Android tablet with a very beautiful screen and a functional S Pen as part of the package. While it's too early to draw any conclusions as we haven’t run our benchmark tests on the Galaxy Tab S9, it seems that it is shaping up to be more than an excellent follow-up to the Galaxy Tab S8. Here's to hoping that it will be another successful release that will vastly improve the Samsung tablet scene and elevate it to new heights, deservedly so.

Qualcomm Adreno 740:
