Reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra after 5 days of testing the camera, battery life, gaming performance and more, comparing vs the S23 Ultra from last year. Is the Samsung S24 Ultra a worthy upgrade, and worth that £1249 UK price? I've been using this mega-Galaxy phone for almost a week and so far I'm a big fan. For one, the camera has improved over last year's model, so the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra offers more natural results with Scene Optimiser switched off. That's on top of the improved zoom between 5-10x, which now boasts upgraded clarity and tone. Then there's the battery life, which is again superb - and ever so slightly better on the Samsung S24 Ultra vs the S23 from 2023. Sadly those charging speeds haven't improved. Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is more powerful, but this doesn't always translate to better performance.

What can’t the Galaxy S23 Ultra do? It’s not quite as fast to charge as the OnePlus 11, and it’s not going to fit comfortably in all hands or pockets — but that’s about it. There’s a real pleasure in using a phone that puts ability ahead of gimmicks and keeps a sensible, yet stylish and recognizable design over needlessly changing it up to try and attract buyers. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is Samsung at its most confident, and it’s the sensible, mature buying decision for anyone wanting the pinnacle of Android performance and ability. It’s a combination that makes it one of the best phones of the year. What it’s not is daring, or especially forward-thinking. Head over to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 for that, as the Galaxy S23 Ultra gives you the best that’s available now, without compromise, and doesn’t try to push the envelope or be the next big thing. It’s the current big thing, and because it’s not advancing the fundamentals over what we’re used to seeing already, it’ll stay relevant and usable for more people over many years.

The S23 Ultra isn’t perfect. The 200MP sensor and 100x space zoom feel like little more than marketing gimmicks. These are bold claims to put on a spec sheet (and corresponding advertising campaign) which in real life are generally wholly unnecessary. Yes, you can get lots of excellent detail out of the phone, but who is actually examining their smartphone pictures at that level of scrutiny? They look great on your phone screen and that’s the most important thing. Of course, all of that comes at a price – and it’s a high one. If you want the best of the best and you’ve got the cash to spend on it, then you won’t be disappointed. If you’ve already got an Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, don’t expect to be blown away by the difference, but if you’ve got an older phone or something else entirely, then you might also consider it worth the investment.

Before we move on to the final words in this review, let's answer the important question - how is the Galaxy S23 Ultra after eight months of use? And the answer is - fresh as the day we set it up for the first time. We look after our devices here at GSMArena, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra's pristine condition says something about the phone's solid build quality as well. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is a true do-it-all tool. It combines a huge display, an S Pen, 512GB of storage (Samsung launched only 512GB units as a pre-order bonus), 12GB of RAM, the fastest Snapdragon up until a few days ago, and a 5,000mAh battery that can go all day. Not to mention a camera system that's just as uniquely versatile three years into its tenure. And outside of the sheer impressiveness of the Galaxy S23 Ultra's specs sheet, it's competent, and that induces confidence. But as improved as the Galaxy S23 Ultra is over its predecessor - it remains fundamentally the same phone.

There’s clearly a lot to talk about when it comes to the S23 Ultra’s cameras, but I’ve been most impressed this year with its substantial processing and efficiency improvements. I’m not often surprised by generational benchmark upgrades, but this update is one to remember. The switch to Snapdragon is a smart move, especially for Samsung’s European customers, who have been stuck with Exynos-based Galaxy phones for what seems like an eternity. US Samsung fans, who have had the benefit of Qualcomm for a number of years already, might not feel the same way, but for those on this side of the Atlantic the S23 Ultra is a big upgrade. The question remains whether prospective phone buyers pick up on these improvements, or whether the lack of changes elsewhere, paired with that price hike, puts them off altogether. That would be a shame, since across almost every metric, the S23 Ultra is the ultimate Android smartphone; if you have the money, it’s the handset you should be buying.

Samsung retains the crown of “best smartphone for photographers” with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, providing a fantastic all-rounder which copes well in a variety of different situations and comes with a well-featured native camera app. Directly from the smartphone, images are great, with lots of detail, vibrant colours and a range of focal lengths to choose from. Being able to record in raw format, use a “Pro” mode to change settings, along with all the usual smartphone modes – like Portrait and Night mode – means that there’s very little to compromise on here. Video also performs well, and although 8K is probably not something that the average consumer will use, having it available shows off exactly what Samsung can do at this level.

Based on my testing I'd say the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the best Android phone you can buy period, and it makes a very strong case for being the best phone overall. Galaxy S24 Ultra rumors are already promising big changes for next year's model, but that's further down the road — the S23 Ultra is the best right now. The 200MP camera is simply stunning, and Samsung has really upped its game when it comes to low-light performance. In some cases the S23 Ultra delivered better looking photos than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, though Apple won other rounds. But the iPhone still falls behind on zoom power. The S23 Ultra is also a seriously fast phone, thanks to the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, and this is the best phone for gaming I've tested yet. Plus, the over 13 hours of battery life is a serious improvement over the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is Samsung’s “Born in the USA” — a standout offering in a line of standout offerings, and one that people will recognize from the opening note. It doesn’t shy away from anything, preferring to compete with the best on the market by outmuscling them rather than finding careful balance. Samsung’s quartet of rear cameras is still a force to be reckoned with, whether you ever take a 200MP snap or not. Factor in a premium — if familiar — design, excellent performance, and battery life for days, and it’s easy to see why the Galaxy S23 Ultra deserves its place at the top. The Galaxy S23 Ultra doesn’t just want a place at the top right now; it expects to stay there. Samsung’s excellent update commitment and connectivity standards will keep its flagship feeling fresh for years to come, and the high-end materials will put up with more than their share of wear and tear.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is a subtle but appreciated update. While it may seem like a boring upgrade, it improves on some of the previous generation's annoying shortcomings and some of the most critical areas that make up a flagship smartphone. This year's Ultra is a solid buy, and if you are looking for a powerhouse Android smartphone with all the bells and whistles, the S23 Ultra should be at the top of your list. That said, if you have an S22 Ultra, the upgrades probably won't be worth the money to you. It might be best to wait a little longer to change phones.

So, going back to our question above: is this phone’s steep asking price worth it? Well, there are two answers to that. If you’re coming from the S22 Ultra, you might want to hold off upgrading to this year’s flagship and wait for the next one instead. Save your precious pesos and enjoy and maximize your S22 Ultra’s outstanding features first. However, if you’re a power user who needs a flagship Android phone that can handle any task well—and money is no object—then yes, you should definitely consider the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra three months later, including an in-depth camera test, battery life verdict, performance and more. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is one of the best flagship smartphones of 2023 vs the Pixel 7 Pro, Huawei P60 Pro and Xiaomi 13 Ultra. However, Samsung's mega-phone is also far from budget friendly, so should you upgrade or get the S23 Plus? If you want incredible battery life, this mighty mobile is certainly in the top five easy. I've struggled to kill the thing in a single day even with plenty of camera play, and a generous slice of gaming. Speaking of that camera, the Samsung S23 Ultra boasts a fresh new 200MP sensor that you won't find on the regular or Plus models. This is great for low light shooting, almost as hot as the P60 Pro, while the telephoto shooters are great for natural pet/kid snaps.

As a premium flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has all the hallmarks of a great Galaxy S handset, starting from its One UI 5.1, to its components, and all this translates into a premium, day-to-day experience with little compromise in key performance areas like its viewing experience, photo-taking, and stylus-wielding navigation. Getting one would usually boil down to wanting a handset with its bulk, its stylus offering, or its big battery and uptime. If we had to choose, it's a contest between performance gains and its reduced curvature that we liked most about what's changed on this model. The upgrades are all within, and we feel the Galaxy S23 Ultra is made for users who care more about what's inside than how it looks (before you buy a phone case, that is).

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra performed very well in the DXOMARK Selfie tests, coming close to the very best devices in the Ultra-Premium segment. Its front camera has also been slightly improvement over the predecessor S22 Ultra, with differences most noticeable in terms of color in photo as well as noise reduction in both photo and video. This said, our testers found the level of captured detail to be generally lower than on the previous model. When shooting still images, the camera delivered nice colors and skin tones in most conditions. Dynamic range was pretty wide, capturing good detail in both the highlight and shadow regions of the frame. The autofocus was accurate and quick to lock on, working reliably even in difficult conditions.

While some may argue that the Samsung S23 Ultra lacks significant upgrades, a closer look reveals that this generation has addressed user concerns and pain points. Notably, the customized Snapdragon 8 Gen2 improves system smoothness and power efficiency. The S23 Ultra impressed me with its performance and heat dissipation. Unlike previous S series models, I didn’t experience any heat issues during everyday use or even gaming sessions. The camera capabilities are remarkable, offering a wide range of focal lengths. With Samsung’s Photo Suggestions feature, capturing stunning photos has become effortless. The upgraded 200-megapixel lens and improved sensor enhance picture detailing, although the speed of the 200-megapixel mode may be a bit slow. The top curved screen and S Pen feature add to the device’s appeal, showcasing Samsung’s commitment to an exceptional flagship experience. If you currently own the S21 series or earlier, I highly recommend upgrading to the Samsung S23 Ultra. It offers overall improvements in performance, power efficiency, and imaging. For those new to Samsung devices and in search of a high-quality Android phone, the S23 Ultra is definitely worth considering based on its impressive performance.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra makes for a reliable and versatile camera phone that can take long exposure shots just as well as any other high-end camera. Thankfully, if you're looking to get the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, you can still get it with a free Samsung Galaxy Watch5 smartwatch AND if you trade-in your phone you can also get the Samsung Galaxy S23 for free. Samsung Malaysia have not only extended their Buy 1 Get 1 Free offer up until 30 April 2023, but they’ve also expanded the list of eligible devices that you can trade-in. Don’t forget that the free Samsung Galaxy S23 you’re getting is also a flagship smartphone in its own right, so this is still a pretty good deal.

So long as the camera inconsistencies and issues with capturing motion don't bother you, this is the new king of Android phones. Even still, the potential of a camera fix coming at the end of March highlights what mere software updates can do for a phone. Updates are important, and this phone will get them for years to come. It's a phone that's essentially perfect if Samsung can tweak the camera experience just a bit more to match what Google does with the Pixel and, even then, Samsung excels at so many areas in the camera department it might be easy to overlook for many people. There's no arguing with the versatility of the S Pen and how much fun it adds to the everyday phone experience. Doodling on GIFs, taking easy screen captures, writing notes with friends, or just taking a photo of you and your friends with the button on the pen. It's the same great experience we've loved for years and just keeps getting better. And who can forget the performance and battery life here? The special Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy Devices that powers the Galaxy S23 Ultra is the fastest, most efficient processor we've seen from Qualcomm in a long, long time. It also doesn't get hot or drop performance over time like last year's processor did, all while running games twice as fast in most cases. If you want the best overall Android phone around, this is it.

The time has come to summarize how much it all costs, although I must admit that I really don't want to do it. The 12/512 GB model costs €1,580, while the 12/1000 GB model costs €1,820. The most important question is whether it is worth paying so much for this smartphone? It is known that if you can afford it, you can safely afford it and you should not be disappointed. What is the reason for buying this smartphone? First of all, the battery - much better than last year's model. In addition, we have a great display, excellent speakers, sensational call quality, very good performance and the fact that it hardly heats up. Styling slightly changed. It is true that the assessment of the exterior is an individual matter, but you can feel the improvement in everyday use. We can still enjoy exceptional cameras and excellent video results. In fact, apart from the price and the lack of a charger in the set, it's hard for me to point out any more serious shortcomings. Of course, you could want even faster charging and a better fingerprint reader, but Samsung has at least something to work on in the next series. It's always great and it's always expensive.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is an exceptional flagship device that delivers in all areas that matter. It boasts a sleek and stylish design with a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display that is perfect for gaming, browsing, and movie watching. The phone also packs a powerful camera with a 200MP main sensor, 3x and 10x telephoto lenses, and an ultrawide lens, providing clear and detailed images even in low-light conditions. The performance of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is also impressive, thanks to its special variant of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy, which provides blazingly fast performance and is one of the fastest Snapdragon chipsets ever made. The phone also features a 5000mAh battery that supports 45W wired fast charging, and storage options range from 256GB to 1TB. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is an excellent device that lives up to its “Ultra” branding and high-end price tag. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is as safe a phone as Samsung has ever made. It also just so happens to be one of its best. If you're in the market for a new phone — and money's no object — the Samsung Galaxy S23 is a fantastic choice. It's blazing fast, has the best display on a smartphone right now, features an excellent array of cameras, and sports a battery big enough to get you well past a full day's use. It's definitely expensive, but this phone is built to last. I can't imagine what Samsung could possibly roll out in the next couple of years that would convince anyone with an S23 Ultra to throw it away. Basically, it's peak smartphone. A smartphone sitting on a vinyl record. But if your current daily driver is serving you just fine, you shouldn't feel pressured to upgrade. Galaxy S22 Ultra owners — specifically those with Qualcomm chips — certainly fall into this category, but I'd argue Galaxy S21 Ultra owners do as well. Even those with a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra can probably hold onto their current device for another year. We've reached the point where smartphones are built to last, and unless you're a Samsung shareholder, I think that's a good thing.

Yes, you absolutely should. While it’s a bit large and heavy, this is one of the best - if not the best - phones currently available, easily rivalling the greatest that Apple, Google and Sony have to offer. It has a unique feature in the S Pen, the ability to convert into something approaching a desktop PC thanks to DEX mode, and the camera setup is capable of producing some excellent images. The downsides are its size, weight, and price. This isn’t a phone you’d buy on a whim to be replaced next year when the S24 comes along, but an investment on the scale of a new MacBook Air or Windows ultrabook, and it blurs the lines between the two sectors. This kind of power in your pocket means you don’t necessarily have to wait until you get home to carry out a computing task, you don’t need a compact camera for photos, or a mirrorless for 8K video, and you don’t need to carry a charger with you if you’re staying out for the night. It’s a master of many trades, producing the kind of results we’d never have expected from a phone just a few years ago.

Galaxy S22 Ultra users may find the new Galaxy S23 Ultra less attractive because of its incremental gains, but that's a benefit for these older phones. You're not obsolete within a year, and the price you pay is for the extra megapixels on a main camera, a more comfortable viewing experience, and smoother phone operation. All these gains aren't as apparent in your daily use, making it easy to decide if you want to drop close to two grand for these additions. The predecessor is already a good choice, so there's little to fret about (and no one can tell you have an older model at a glance anyway).

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a flagship phone worthy of the name, but you already knew that. By pretty much every measure it delivers unrivalled performance, and the addition of the S Pen is a feature we always enjoy. That said, it does not come cheap, and it also suffers from the same problem that the base model S23 does. Namely that its closest competitor is last year’s Ultra. The margins of difference between the phones are very thin, so upgrading from the predecessor to this model makes little sense. If, however, your Android flagship phone is indeed due for an upgrade, Samsung’s latest offering remains the safest bet out there.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra really sets the benchmark for what the best smartphone should be capable of in 2023. The upgraded camera offering is undoubtedly the star of the show, with a new main 200MP snapper with advanced features like 16-in-1 pixel binning and the ability to individually enhance separate sections of photos delivering consistently impressive results with very little effort from the user. It also completely changes the game in low-light scenarios, delivering among the best results yet from a smartphone. This is the best camera phone you can buy right now. That’s backed up by capable ultra-wide and telephoto lenses that give the S23 Ultra a level of versatility hard for the competition to match. It’s not just a capable camera though; the display, though relatively unchanged, boasts top-level performance, the S Pen offers one of the lowest latencies of any stylus, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy offers top-notch performance and the 5000mAh battery will get you through a day’s use without worry. There are certain complaints, like relatively slow 45W charging, a rather bulky design compared to other big-screen phones and one of the most expensive price tags for a non-foldable, but the overall experience is unmatched right now.

Moreover, I enjoyed the increased functionalities of the embedded S Pen as it offers more possibilities for productivity, notetaking and more. With just a click of the pen, I’m able to jot down notes on the screen as an off-screen memo which has been really useful for impromptu reminders or ideas. Having said that, I’m still coming to grips (pun fully intended) with the stylus as it’s still awkward for me to hold and I find the screen still a tad cramped for proper notetaking as I tend to run right off the screen. Apart from that, you can also write directly onto Google Documents now and co-edit using Google Meets and Samsung Notes during video calls. All in all, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is truly a feat of technology to behold. It has a deceivingly similar appearance to its predecessor but what it lacks in design upgrades, it makes up for in intentional and future-forward features. I believe that Samsung has made enough meaningful changes to the Galaxy S23 Ultra that make it a worthy purchase if you’re looking for unrivalled camera technology, performance-driven hardware and endless customisation tools.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra battery experience earned an excellent global score, placing it among the top 10 devices we have tested so far and in the top spot of our Ultra-Premium segment. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset, the Galaxy S23 outperformed its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (both the Snapdragon and Exynos versions) by a long stretch, thanks to better autonomy and efficiency scores. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra showed excellent results in our autonomy tests. The battery lasted nearly 67 hours when used moderately, with less than 2% lost per night on average. When testing outdoors, the performances were also very good, except when using the camera, where the autonomy was slightly below our database average. During the tests where we evaluate particular usages separately, the autonomy was excellent, too, especially when streaming videos. However, the battery level collapsed when reaching 5%, which could impact the user experience. The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s charging results were average, whether wired or wireless.

Samsung finally got things right with the Galaxy S23 Ultra after years of struggling with chipsets and reliability issues, while the upgrades are definitely iterative, but they are what makes it the ultimate flagship phone to own in 2023, and it is a phone that doesn’t need to match its competition’s unique selling point to be a great phone, because it is a consistent phone that everybody wants and will easily appeal to those looking to switch from other Android phone brands or iPhones. The Galaxy S23 Ultra may look the same as its predecessor, but what it packs under the hood is what matters and it delivers consistency that every flagship Android successor should have.

From the new flat side rails to a bigger flat area on the display, much better performance, thermals and an all-day battereverything here is not just good, it's impressive. The camera is another add-on where Samsung has certainly come a long way from the previous generation. Traditionally, at the beginning of the year, Samsung announced a new flagship S-series, the peak of which was the Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone. This model had to absorb all the best that is in the manufacturer’s arsenal today, so the expectations from it are quite high. But, at first glance, the difference between the Galaxy S23 Ultra and its predecessor is not very significant, because we have a similar design and capabilities. However, looking ahead, I will note that Samsung has worked on almost every feature of the new smartphone. How much this helped the Galaxy S23 Ultra and whether the device is able to live up to the high expectations, I will tell you in this review.

All that is just personal preference, however. The truth of the matter is, outside the same old design and the same old feature set, this is a genuine improvement over the S22 Ultra in most of the areas that matter. And yes, the cameras do go over the top sometimes, but if you’re paying between RM5,699 to RM7,199 on a phone, you have every right to want a camera you can show off to your friends. It’s hard to escape the fact that the entire smartphone industry is either standing still or actually pulling back on some of its innovations. But Samsung has made some bold changes this year that many people will really like. Just don’t mix up your shiny new phone with someone else’s S22 Ultra at the next teh tarik meet.

Some may not need all of these features or fantastic cameras. But, if you’re looking for the absolute best Android phone (that is a Samsung) in nearly every category, that is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The price of admission is high, but you wouldn’t be reading this review if you were not already aware of the cost.

Plus, Samsung’s One UI is also something that has grown over the years to become the best Android skin out there. Samsung has even set a standard with 4 years of OS and 5 years of security updates on its flagships and aims to bring software updates even faster in the future too. So this time, I genuinely feel that the S23 Ultra is a great alternative to the iPhone 14 Pro Max. And I am really happy to see these two heavyweights competing again! In the past couple of years, iPhones have almost been close to a monopoly and that’s never good for the consumer. However, with the S23 Ultra, Samsung has made an excellent comeback! The Galaxy S23 Ultra is undoubtedly the most complete Android phone you can get this year. It goes big on everything from performance to price, but you can be sure that it will last you for many years to come.

Samsung has once again created the coolest Android smartphone. It's expensive, but it has the best cameras (night photography, high-quality zoom up to 100x and super-stable video), a gorgeous display, premium materials, high performance and record battery life. It also has a built-in stylus, a beautiful One UI 5 shell, and the ability to work as a PC. There are no serious drawbacks, except that I would like to see a suitable storage device in the package and faster charging. The price is outrageous, but... an advanced premium device cannot be cheap.

These days, it’s clear that Korean tech giant Samsung is fighting two battles in the smartphone arena. On the one hand, it wants to lead the tech innovation segment with its folding phones range, and has developed two distinct lines – the Fold and the Flip, where it has yet to meet a worthy contender. But on the flip side, it also recognises that there is a market for the standard smartphone packed with a sharp display, powerful processor and amazing camera, and a while back, the chaebol had two competing lines with the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series, until they merged both into one, offering us their defining Android device, and this year, it’s the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Head over to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 for that, as the Galaxy S23 Ultra gives you the best that’s available now, without compromise, and doesn’t try to push the envelope or be the next big thing. It’s the current big thing, and because it’s not advancing the fundamentals over what we’re used to seeing already, it’ll stay relevant and usable for more people over many years. Only the iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max come close to being this confidence-inspiring, as other top-tier Android phones are often thwarted by software woes, performance that’s good but never outstanding, and try-hard designs that can limit appeal. You’re going to pay a lot of money for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it’s worth every penny, and in three or even four years’ time, when it’s still a great phone, you’ll look back and see what good value it actually was.

If ever there was a phone worthy of the “ultra” moniker, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is it. The phone is unrivalled in size, power, capability and battery life on Android, while its camera is more capable than any other on the market. It is very much overkill for most, but for those who would like the ability to do more or less anything with a phone, the S23 Ultra has the goods. It is full of little improvements to almost every aspect. However, it only builds on big leaps made two years ago and is overshadowed by more innovative folding devices. Its very high price makes it poor value next to the Google Pixel 7 Pro, which cannot match the Samsung on every element but comes close enough for £400-£500 less. It is without doubt the best Android phone available. Whether that’s enough to be a hit at this price any more, I’m not sure.

Its powerful performance, stunning display, and innovative features make it a must-have for anyone looking for the latest and greatest smartphone technology. If you already own a Galaxy S22 Ultra, there may not be enough of a difference to justify upgrading to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, if you're in the market for a new smartphone and don't mind the high price, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is an excellent choice. Whether you are a professional or a casual user, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a planet that will undoubtedly shine bright in the Galaxy Ecosystem.

FINALLY - after 8 years - Samsung has made the change we've been waiting for! Grab a Teardown skin for your own phone. I have personally been using a Samsung phone from way back to the old school Galaxy S1 Vibrant Days. So to finally see Samsung take this new Galaxy S23 Ultra and add a replaceable battery is a HUGE DEAL. I'm very excited about how the Galaxy S23 Ultra line is changing direction to be more repairable.

Still, if you want a phone that does just about everything and that too exceptionally well, then the Galaxy S23 Ultra is hard to beat. The S Pen itself makes it a one-of-a-kind flagship, and those cameras are packed with potential. Other phones might match some of its features, but none can really bring as much to the smartphone table as the Galaxy S23 Ultra does. There were, after all, plenty of dinosaurs, but the T-Rex was one of a kind. The year is going to see plenty of other Android flagships, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra is likely to remain the flagship to beat for the rest of the year, even for the likes of the search Pixel 8 and the search iPhone 15 (or whatever search Google and search Apple choose to call them). Many might think that that is worth paying a hefty premium for.

To conclude then, the S23 Ultra is a superb phone with a battery life that has exceeded expectations, plenty of camera improvements, especially in low light, and subtle ergonomic changes that improve usability. Yes, the design is the same as last year, but it is unobtrusive, inoffensive, and fits the phrase 'form and function' nicely. For once, all the models in this generation of Galaxy S line look like they are from the same family, and that is a good thing. In terms of negatives,I've touched on things like not being able to switch lenses when recording 4k 60fps right now, which is the sa,e limitation on the S22 Ultra, so it would be nice to see a software update that allows this on the new cameras. Everything else remains similar, just refined and enhanced in one way or other. Call quality, speakers, overall OS performance all feel similar just as I would have expected, given that both are flagship models released not even a full year apart from each other. The main focus gains come in the form of battery life and camera quality, and for some, that is what matters most.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra makes an enticing switch if you're coming from other brands, and it's never really just one standout feature that makes you pull the trigger. It combines its impressive photography capabilities, having a luxurious-looking display, and the meeting of all premium flagship expectations of like fast-charging and IP ratings come together on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It takes a while to really get into Samsung's ecosystem, but that is mostly optional and relatively easy to setup if do intend to use it.

While the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is clearly the do-it-all Android smartphone money can buy at the moment, it all comes at a premium, which despite a price bump, isn't hard to justify to a fan of the Ultra series or a creator who is looking for such pro-grade features in a smartphone. For a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra owner though, it might not be the most enticing upgrade this year, unless you crave the latest hardware or need that 8K 30fps capability. Now, if we can only get a smaller sized Ultra smartphone next year, I think I'll be truly happy.

After using the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra for about 10 days, I can say that it is one of the most complete Android devices out there in the market right now. So, if you are willing to spend over 1 lakh on a smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is definitely the one for you. When compared to its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra isn’t a very big upgrade in the design department. But in all other aspects, the S23 Ultra brings massive upgrades. The smartphone clicks fantastic photos in almost all lighting conditions and also offers buttery smooth performance and handles multitasking very well. One of the most impressive aspects of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is the battery life. The phone lasts one full day of rigorous usage very easily. There’s 100W fast charging support, but I do feel that Samsung could have considered adding the charging brick to a phone that costs more than 1 lakh. Overall, I believe, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a fantastic device in every aspect, if you have the money to spend on it.

While the S23 Ultra does resemble its predecessor on the outside, it’s clear that there are plenty of new and improved bits as well, especially when it comes to the 200MP camera system and top-of-the-range Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform. Its camera is one of the best on the market, producing stunning photos in a wide variety of lighting conditions. The 100x digital zoom, Expert RAW and Hyperlapse modes give you all sorts of creative options too, along with quite a bit of control over your final photos. Otherwise, building on an already excellent S22 Ultra platform is no bad thing, with a wonderful display, the versatility of the S-Pen, long battery life and loads of other sound design choices and features. Yes, price-wise it’s not a bargain, however, like most flagships, you need to pay a premium to access cutting-edge features. While the Google Pixel 7 Pro has a more competitive price point and somewhat comparable features, at the time of writing, there are few, if any phones in the Android camp that can rival the S23 Ultra, leaving it to take its rightful place at the top. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra packs in class-leading camera features, along with the latest and most powerful hardware ever in a Galaxy smartphone. It's as good as you can get in an Android smartphone, as long as you can afford it.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra marks a milestone in the Korean tech giant’s roadmap. Officially and to state the obvious, it is currently the first and only smartphone on the current market that houses a 200MP sensor in its main camera, allowing users to do photography on a whole new level. With a starting price tag of RM5699, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is unapologetically expensive and feels more or less like a repeat performance from the last generation. But that isn’t the case. At the end of the day, you are forking out a premium not just for a phone with more up-to-date internals, but also for a much better camera sensor, and that’s regardless of the SKU being brought into the country. In conjunction, it’s the first time the “Ultra” in the phone’s namesake feels more deserving than before and in doing so, raises the bar for all other smartphones to clear this year.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra turned in an excellent overall display performance, showing some marked improvements over its predecessor. Both the S23 Ultra and the S22 Ultra continue to lead the pack in providing the best user experience for video, with a refresh rate that adapts itself to the frame rate of the content being played. Despite good progress in motion control and to a lesser degree, in color rendering, the S23 Ultra remained essentially at the same level as the S22 Ultra for readability, and showed the same visible aliasing as the S22 Ultra when playing video games. Please note that all comparisons with the S22 Ultra in this review were made with the Snapdragon version of that device. The S23 Ultra comes only with a Snapdragon processor; unlike previous generations, there is no Exynos-powered version.

With a DXOMARK Audio score of 139, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra performed very well in our tests and is a clear improvement over last year’s Galaxy S22 series. The built-in speakers delivered good overall sound quality with a nice timbre and a deep and powerful bass, making the Samsung a great option for listening to music, watching movies or gaming alike. Recording results were best with the main camera, but the S23 Ultra also did a decent job with the selfie camera. Recordings with the memo app were limited by the default memo setting. Overall, the built-in microphones delivered good results, though. The audio zoom feature was capable of reducing background noise and focusing on the main subject. Wind noise reduction worked effectively as well.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is arguably one of, if not the best Android smartphone around. It builds on the success of its predecessor and adds some subtle yet impactful improvements, though it doesn’t look like it would at first glance. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra easily surpasses its predecessor as the reliable all-rounder flagship to get for 2023. Even though it doesn't have any unique features aside from the S Pen and 200MP camera, we expect it to remain the reliable yet relevant camera phone flagship device that can do anything and everything, even at the end of the year after every other device has been announced. Moving from the base model of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which has 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, to the base model of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which has 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, I can certainly feel the improvement. While I don't have to worry so much about filling up my storage (which is mostly perceived) the increased amount of memory does result in slightly smoother interactions between the apps. It lasts longer and is cooler too. However, at its current price of RM5699 for just the base model, it's hard to recommend getting the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra if you already have the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Granted, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra does outperform its predecessor, but both phones are still top-of-the-line flagship devices. If you're still using a Samsung Galaxy Note series device, then we heartily recommend getting the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra over the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. The sheer amount of improvements should make it worth the extra money. However, aside from other S Pen using devices, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has nearly no other contenders from other brands. Thankfully, you still have a few days until the end of the preorder for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra on 23 February 2023, so if you want the phone with all the freebies, this is how to do it. In any case, do let us know how your experience with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra was as well and stay tuned to TechNave.com for more tech reviews and news.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is to the smartphones what Bentley is to the world of cars – it has got all the luxuries you can ask for, draped in utmost style. It has a large and beautiful display to let your eyes feast upon, a highly capable and power efficient Snapdragon chip that also runs cool, a set of splendid cameras outdoing the versatility of a professional camera, and a good battery life to back it all. And when you are done dealing with all that, one look at the stately design of the S23 Ultra and most of you seem to be proud of your hefty investment. But what about the competition? The Galaxy S23 Ultra has to peek at just two rivals – the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max that rides the hype train with its Dynamic Island, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 with its large tablet-like folding display. The Fold 4 is a worthy alternative only if you want the folding display, and the iPhone is a solid phone but with less capable cameras and a restricted ecosystem. This makes the Galaxy S23 Ultra an easy pick for anyone who has a starting budget of Rs. 124,999 for their next smartphone. It has literally got everything you can ask for in a smartphone today. Our new top recommendation for a smartphone in 2023, if money is no bar.

On paper, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra does not bring much compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. But in reality, I can safely say that this is the most successful flagship from Samsung since the Galaxy Note 10+. In fact, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is what the Galaxy S22 Ultra should have been. It is THE model that completes the merger of the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series. It is THE model that finally puts an end to the disadvantageous treatment of European users by integrating the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC worldside. It is THE Samsung model that finally offers excellent battery life that was always a disappointment from the South Korean manufacturer. If I had to summarize this review that could easily have been 6,000 words long, I'd say that Samsung has three great arguments to excuse the totally insane price of the Galaxy S23 Ultra: The performance of the new Qualcomm SoC, an excellent battery life, and the most versatile camera module on the market. Yes, the price is extremely prohibitive for most people. And yes, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has come down in price quite a bit. But the Galaxy S23 Ultra will remain much more competitive, and for much longer. So even if you're waiting for price drops, go for the S23 Ultra after a few months rather than its predecessor.

With a DXOMARK Camera score of 140, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra achieved a very good result in our camera tests. It offered good performance across pretty much all test attributes, without major drawbacks in any area, making it a great smartphone imaging allrounder. Still images featured excellent detail in bright light and a fairly wide dynamic range across all light levels. Please note that still-image testing was undertaken at the default 12MP resolution. The camera also allows for capture at higher image resolutions. Tele zoom at very long range was a strength, thanks to Samsung’s dual-tele approach with a dedicated 10x camera. However, despite the sophisticated tele hardware, overall zoom results were slightly below competitors such as the Huawei Mate 50 Pro or Honor Magic 4 Ultimate, which provide more consistent tele zoom quality with only one higher-resolution tele camera module. Effective stabilization and a fast and accurate autofocus meant that the Galaxy S23 Ultra also did well for video. White balance in low light left some room for improvement, though. Compared to the predecessor S22 Ultra, the Samsung engineers managed to achieve improvements in several areas, including video stabilization, slightly better zoom, noticeably better video exposure, and improved autofocus speed in bright light. Please note that all comparisons with the S22 Ultra in this review were made with the Snapdragon version of that device. The S23 Ultra only comes as a Snapdragon variant. Unlike for previous generations, there is no Exynos-powered version.

At the end of the day, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a step in the right direction for Samsung. It's not a giant leap, but it improves in all the key areas with an impressive new chip (that finally come to all customers), improved audio quality, double the storage, better design and a more capable camera. These are things everyone will appreciate. All the rest of the minor tweaks are welcome additions, even if far less impactful: 8K video is still not something many users would actually use, the improvements in video stabilization are again nice, but not a game-changer. Does the new S23 Ultra feel like an "S" version? While we cannot outright recommend S22 Ultra owners to upgrade, those who rock an older phone and are looking for a flagship, will love the S23 Ultra. To us, this feels like more than an "S" version. And let's not forget that it keeps the power and versatility of a Note with the S Pen and there is really nothing quite like it on the market.

The S23 Ultra is everything that a high-end, flagship-level device should be. It has a stunning display, a solid build, a great array of cameras and way more performance than one would actually need in a phone. For people complaining about Samsung reusing an older design, consider this – da Vinci did not paint a new version of the Mona Lisa every year now, did he? Yes, the smartphone is expensive – not prohibitively so for some people, but definitely for most. With that being said it’s the most feature-rich Android smartphone available, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find something better. If you are of those few who can actually afford the S23 Ultra, and are looking for a smartphone, we can wholeheartedly recommend the Galaxy S23 Ultra – this isn’t just an annual upgrade of Samsung’s Galaxy S series for 2023. The S23 Ultra is a new yardstick, the new benchmark for all premium flagship smartphones.

Samsung clearly wants the Galaxy S23 Ultra to be the ultimate camera for cinematographers and photographers. I'm certainly not a professional filmmaker, nor do I consider myself to be a shutterbug. But after using the Galaxy S23 Ultra for several days, it's clear the new camera upholds the areas in which Samsung already excels -- like low-light photography -- and pushes those strengths a little further. The $1,200 (£1,249, AU$1,949) Galaxy S23 Ultra will be available on Feb. 17 alongside the rest of Samsung's new phone lineup, which includes the $800 Galaxy S23 and $1,000 Galaxy S23 Plus. Like last year's Galaxy S22 Ultra, the S23 Ultra's giant screen, high price and souped-up camera may be too much for the average person. The name "Ultra" says it all; this phone is for people who want a phone that's over the top. Compared to the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus, the Ultra offers a closer zoom magnification than most people will probably need, a stylus that stores inside the phone and a massive 6.8-inch screen that's larger than both those of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Google Pixel 7 Pro. You might not need all that excess, but after using this phone for a few days, I wouldn't blame you for wanting them.

The S23 Ultra is a superb device, but I want something more. I’m a huge fan of the 200-megapixel primary camera, as it takes amazing pictures. However, phones are more than just their cameras. Of course, the S23 Ultra also offers a long-lasting battery, an upgraded processor, and more, but it doesn’t really have anything new to offer compared to the S22. If you’re sporting something even older, you might want either the S22 Ultra or save even more money with the S23/S23+. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra is the most expensive non-foldable Android on the market and pretty much equivalent in pricing to the iPhone 14 Pro (256GB since that’s what the S23 Ultra features). But at least this year it comes with a new Dynamic Island. Years ago, Android phones were innovative and offered interesting, sometimes gimmicky features, which is what attracted me to them. Samsung has sold the same phone for a few years in a row. Thanks to its 200-megapixel primary camera, built-in S Pen and better processor, this is its best smartphone yet, but it also feels too similar and lacks excitement. If you’re using an S20 and want to upgrade and can’t go without that 200-megapixel new camera, or if you’re using a Note 20 and you’re looking for something new with the best camera on the market, the S23 Ultra is the choice for you. However, if you’re looking for something more affordable and has a pretty solid camera, just grab the S22 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is another case of the iterative phone cycle we have found ourselves in within the past year. Not much has changed from last year’s model apart from the camera and processor, and while both are good additions, we’re not sure if they justify such a steep rise in pricing. And when it comes to a phone that costs this much offering little to no upgrades in the AV department, it leaves us feeling a little bit disappointed – especially now that Apple has upped its game even further with the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is still a great daily handset, and it provides a solid picture and sound experience – but for the money, it needs to be outstanding.

OneUI 5.1 on Samsung's Galaxy S23 series smartphones is packed with features, so here's a tips and tricks guide for the S23, Plus & Ultra to maximise your camera time, gaming and battery life! I've been reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with its S Pen, 200MP camera and impressive specs and here's my favourite features in OneUI. This intrepid phone trio offer impressive personalisation, and that's where we begin. You can customise the desktops, lock screen and UI to suit your needs, while decking the Galaxy S23 Plus, Ultra or regular with an Always On Display and useful widgets. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra may boast the best camera of this bunch, but even the regular and Plus models serve up some great features for capturing slick snaps. Expert RAW is now available direct through the camera app for instance, while the editing tools have expanded. Gaming on the Samsung S23 Plus, Ultra etc is a joy as well, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 stuffed inside. You have the OneUI 5.1 game booster feature to help you concentrate too, as we show off in this tips and tricks guide.

I can make this very simple. If you have a Galaxy S22 Ultra, you can skip the Galaxy S23 Ultra. If you have any other device, I recommend this phone. Even to my fellow Pixel fans, this is a really good phone that offers a ton of stuff. If you can’t live with One UI, I totally understand. However, if you’re on an aging Samsung device or finally getting ready to rid yourself of an old LG phone maybe, this is the super mega phone you want if you consider yourself a power user. For specs, there’s nothing better currently out in the Android world here in the US, so for now, Galaxy S23 Ultra is the undisputed King of Android. Haters gon’ hate, but this phone is fantastic in all of the main categories: Camera, Display, Hardware, Battery Life, and Software Updates. If we’re looking at device purchases purely from a stance of how long something will be supported, Samsung is currently winning the race. As of now, new Samsung devices get 4 years of Android OS upgrades, plus 5 years of security patches. Even Google doesn’t match that. There’s no arguing that Samsung devices are good Android investments.

It's the very best Android phone you can buy and would be absolutely perfect if it weren't for the weird camera issues. It's got a better-than-usual processor upgrade, up to 2-day battery life, years of software updates in tow, and the power of the Galaxy ecosystem behind it.

There's two ways to look at the Galaxy S23 Ultra: as an upgrade over the S22 Ultra it's marginal, almost like a half-mast 'S' edition rather than full-blown next-level upgrade; but as a standalone device it's an exceptional, refined and accomplished piece of hardware that's easily among the best Android phones you could consider in 2023. Yes, it's pricey, but if you want the master of all then Samsung is a force to be reckoned with.

In the US, at least, the S23 Ultra really doesn’t have another Android peer to compare it to. The Google Pixel 7 Pro is probably the closest competition, but it feels like an entirely different experience in comparison. It’s more pleasant to use out of the box, with a strong camera and capable performance. But it lacks all of the optical zoom power of the Ultra, the stylus, and — surprisingly — comes with one less year of Android OS upgrades. It’s a better option if you don’t want to fuss with the software and you don’t care about having the very best of the best. Not to mention, it’s a full $300 cheaper. Calling your flagship phone the “Ultra” is a bold statement — not that Samsung’s ever been shy about that. This particular “Ultra” wears that title well. It has a deep feature set, top-notch hardware, and an unrivaled camera system. It’s pricey and unapologetically big. For one of the first new mobile devices of 2023, it sets an awfully high bar to clear. If all of that’s not Ultra-worthy, then I’m not sure what is.

I would go so far as saying that even those who have the Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S22 Ultra will not be disappointed by upgrading to the newer model. The best results are seen at 4K, or if you want the smoothest results and don’t have a gimbal, at Full HD with super smooth stabilisation switched on. Speaking of marketing gimmicks, a 200MP sensor and a 100x space zoom. These are bold claims to put on a spec sheet (and corresponding advertising campaign) which in real life are generally wholly unnecessary. Yes, you can get lots of excellent detail out of the phone, but who is actually examining their smartphone pictures at that level of scrutiny. If you’re not keen to spend such a huge amount on a smartphone, there’s plenty of other excellent options out there – for example the Google Pixel 7 Pro, OnePlus 11 and, of course for those who prefer iOS, there’s also the iPhone 14 Pro.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is big and expensive, but its outstanding combination of camera, performance, and reliability makes it one of the best high-end Android phones available. I am sure you won’t get any lag or shutter while using the phone in everyday life or even while playing games. The cameras are really reliable and take great shots. I am really happy with the battery life as well. So, all in all, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra does prove to be the best Android flagship out there in the market. You can still aim for the iPhone 14 Pro Max if Android doesn’t suit you. However, Samsung will give you way more flexibility and features combined with one of the best UI experiences.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the most phone you can get for your money, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the best phone you can buy. It is a kitchen sink phone with every possible feature stuffed into it. In a way, having this much in a phone sort of excuses it being such a squared off brick of a thing. An amazing camera set up, great battery life, best in class screen, stylus, full desktop mode, and the zippiest software performance I’ve seen on a Samsung – I’ve used Samsung Galaxy phones since 2015 – and this phone is a winner. But it costs a lot, which makes it harder to recommend to everyone, just as it does with the most expensive iPhones out there. You might well find all the luxury you want in the regular S23 or S23 Plus, or another top Android phone. Yet if you want the dictionary definition of the ‘most phone’, the S23 Ultra is it – for now.

On the surface, it’s easy to brush off the Galaxy S23 series as just a trio of evolutionary Samsung phones – a predictable and boring update to last year’s S22 series. The S23 Ultra, in particular, simply appears to be a revised S22 Ultra, with a speedy new SoC and a fancy new 200MP primary shooter. However, that would be a narrow-minded perspective, because those tweaks make the Galaxy S23 Ultra an even better phone. Between its premium design, stunning display, top-notch cameras, broad 5G support, excellent audio, superb performance, and exceptional battery life, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is just a phenomenal flagship. And once you take into account the various discounts available for this handset, it becomes even harder to resist. The only real drawback, in our opinion, is Samsung's somewhat overbearing approach to the software experience. If you’re coming from a Galaxy S22 Ultra – or even an S21 Ultra – you probably don’t need to upgrade, unless you’re a mobile photography enthusiast. But for those currently using an older Samsung flagship - like an S20 Ultra or Note 20 Ultra – the S23 Ultra is a very worthy upgrade. Ultimately, if you’re looking for a phone that offers everything but the kitchen sink, few other handsets on the market right now can match the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Overall, it’s a complete package as a high-end flagship smartphone. At the same time, the phone is highly recommended if you want to push the Android ecosystem limits to the next level. There is no doubt that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a great smartphone and only a handful of competitors that can fit it as an alternative option for this phone. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra on face value doesn't make many changes from its predecessor. But at the same time, the boost in camera performance and the additional power build on areas where Samsung was already top of the game: the phone's overall quality of design, strong looks and that outstanding display, carry over from 2022 and now present a package that's one of Android's best devices. There are a few areas where Samsung could elevate the experience: the night shooting could be a little better, the speaker arrangement isn't ideal for gamers and some of the software changes are a little over the top. But as a package, there are few phones finer, or more desirable, than the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

If you own a big-screen Samsung Galaxy older than the S22 Ultra, you should jump at the opportunity to upgrade to this new release for its superior camera and integrated S Pen alone. Owners of the previous Ultra — and other premium smartphones, regardless of platform — should have the S23 Ultra on their radar for its outstanding camera setup. The infinitely customizable Android interface of the Galaxy S23 Ultra perfectly complements its hardware. Most importantly, you will get timely platform updates between phone upgrades. Samsung will treat the device to 4 and 5 years of Android releases and monthly security patches, respectively. Samsung crafted the front and back panels Galaxy S23 series using Gorilla Glass Victus 2 — a tougher version of an incredibly durable material. Considering the products’ glass/metal build is still not invincible, you should always opt for a protective case. There are tons of original and third-party ones to consider.

A increase in battery life, faster charging (only slightly, but still quicker than Apple or Google will give you), one of the best displays in the business - that's a strong start on the fundamentals. The camera, too, is improved, beyond just the 200MP number on the posters, cementing the Ultra as one of the top cameraphones on the market. And then there's the S Pen - a proposition as unique in its utility in 2023 as it was last year. None of this is novel or thrilling stuff, but it all adds up. With all of that in mind, the Galaxy S23 Ultra's only verdict can be 'Highly recommended'.

The new Galaxy S23 Ultra not a cheap phone by any means, and it doesn't help that Samsung hasn't been as generous with its trade-in offers as one might hope, but if there's any handset that can do it all, it's this one. The integrated S Pen experience is unique to the Ultra line, 8K video recording is both impressive and excessive, upping the base storage to 256GB (from 128GB) at no additional cost is a practical benefit for every user, and the camera system is more than capable to shoot in any environment. Is the Galaxy S23 Ultra the best phone you can buy right now? I'd say so. But even if you settle with the smaller S23 Plus for $200 less, you'll only be missing out on 5 to 10 percent of the features. In fact, if you're already using a flagship phone from one to two years ago -- whether it's from Samsung, Apple, or even Google -- the Galaxy S23 Ultra won't be a dramatic replacement. But, if you are in the position for an upgrade, I can't think of a more competent phone to switch to.

Suffice it to say that if you’re a Galaxy S22 Ultra user, you won’t find the new model exciting. Barring the fresh SoC and the camera upgrades (which are reasonably significant but don’t justify upgrading), the latest flagship doesn’t boast a lot of new capabilities. There’s no doubt that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is an excellent flagship phone. It ticks all the boxes and the camera is excellent. But it comes at a hefty price of Rs 1,24,999. Sure, if you are exchanging an old flagship you will get a good discount, but still, prepare to pay a high price for this. There’s also the fact that this is an iterative upgrade. The design and the overall look also reinforce the belief that this is not a ‘drastic’ jump. There’s also the fact that Samsung has foldable phones in the second half of the year, which might appear more appealing to folks, especially those who are ready to shell out a premium price for their next phone. I would say get the S23 Ultra if you can afford it and want to try out the camera. It doesn’t disappoint.

The tricky thing about recommending the S23 Ultra is that it's everything a super premium phone should be. It's got a gorgeous display, a great build and more power than you know what to do with. However, starting at $1,200, it's also really expensive and it's not that much better than last year's offering. I have no doubt you can film Hollywood-grade movies using its new 200MP sensor. But it's important to remember that even in Samsung's promos, we're talking about a crew with decades of experience, not to mention additional equipment like external mics, camera cages, gimbals and more. The S23 Ultra's camera has tons of potential, but it takes more than just a casual familiarity to make those features glow. For those wondering if they should trade in their current handset after only a year: No, it's just not worth it. If you're simply looking for a premium device and don't care about taking notes with a stylus, I'd argue that the Pixel 7 Pro is a better value. But if you have an older phone and are looking for a major upgrade, the S23 Ultra is unlike any other Android phone on sale today. And with its fancy new sensor, Samsung's latest flagship might be the closest thing you can get to a pro-grade camera in a phone, just as long as you're willing to polish your content in post.

With the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung is doubling down on speed and photography for its flagship phone. Thanks to the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, performance is up more than 40% from last year, while a new 200MP sensor offers more options for advanced content creation. And, with a total of five rear cameras (plus a new selfie shooter in front), a gorgeous 6.8-inch OLED display, improved software and a built-in S Pen, the S23 Ultra has basically everything you could ever need or want on a premium handset. The main downsides are the starting price of $1,200 and that in order to really take advantage of its new photo and video features you kind of have to put in some extra effort. But for those who want a do-everything phone, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is still unlike anything else you can buy today.

Samsung appears to be everywhere... advertising that is. Spending Billions of dollars promoting the same exact phone for the past four years. Its hard to advertise your way out of a phone design on Autopilot. Phones don't design themselves Samsung... gotta innovate at some point!

The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s remit hasn’t changed: it’s still the very best of Samsung in a (non-folding) phone, with astonishing cameras and a productivity focus few rivals can hope to match, courtesy of the built-in stylus. As such, it commands a high price. A base model S23 Ultra with 256GB of storage will set you back £1249 SIM-free. That’s a heck of a lot in anyone’s book, and an increase over last year, although an Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max with the same capacity costs an even higher £1309. Considering the design isn’t all that different from the previous generation, and the software has seen only minor tweaks, S22 Ultra owners shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade – unless the promise of better battery life justifies the expense. For sheer do-it-all ability though, nothing else comes close.

It's pretty much par for the course these days that those who bought last year's flagship shouldn't feel the need to upgrade twelve months later. That's absolutely the case for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which tweaks and refines the recipe we saw introduced on the S22 Ultra — but falls short of anything revolutionary. If you have Galaxy S21 Ultra, though, or are still rocking a Note 20 Ultra from back in 2020, the appeal is more obvious. A Pixel 7 Pro may be markedly cheaper, but its feature list has omissions that Samsung supplies. You do pay handsomely for that upgrade. $1,199.99 for the base-spec phone — just like last year, though with twice the storage at 256GB — or $1,379.99 for the 512GB model. Expect to pay $1,619.99 for the 1TB version, and figure on buying from Samsung direct if you want the fetching Red, Lime, Sky Blue, or Graphite finishes. Carriers and other retailers will get the standard Green, Phantom Black, Lavender, and Cream options. Color preference is subjective, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra is objectively a great phone if you have the budget for it. Powerful, with a fantastic display, excellent cameras, and just about every nice-to-have extra that those in the market for a flagship will be expecting, it is refinement done right.

To be honest, I’m not a big Samsung fan. I’m more of a Pixel person than a Galaxy. But the Galaxy S23 Ultra has me wondering if should replace my Pixel 7 Pro? The Galaxy S23 Ultra does almost everything right. The only issue I have with it, is the size. I’d prefer a smaller phone, but then the display on this one is just so good, it’s hard not to use it. And the camera is almost better than what Google has in the Pixel. Google is really going to need to step it up this year with the Pixel 8, if it wants to keep the lead. Samsung made a lot of incremental changes this year to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Now if you add up those incremental changes, you’ll find that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a lot bigger of an upgrade than you probably thought it’d be.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is an excellent choice if you want the best of the best. The phone has an outstanding display, some of the fastest performance we've seen, a long-lasting battery, powerful software with S Pen stylus integration, and a top-notch set of cameras. It's a gigantic phone, however, and might not suit users with smaller hands (or pockets). Moreover, with a starting price of $1,199.99, it might also be out of reach financially. The Pixel 7 Pro saves you $300 (though you lose the S Pen), while the iPhone 14 Pro Max saves you only $100 (and you have to adopt iOS). The Galaxy S23 and S23+, meanwhile, offer many of the same features as the Ultra in smaller, less-expensive bodies. But if you truly want it all, the Galaxy S23 Ultra wins our Editors' Choice award.

Okay, so what’s the summary? Just this one sentence – the Galaxy S23 Ultra is uncompromised on all fronts – cameras, display, battery life, and especially gaming – plus it has the S Pen and everything is encased in a beautiful design. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is an obvious improvement over the S22 Ultra even though they look similar. While the design is subjective – the performance upgrade is obviously leaps and bounds better than the S22 Ultra – partly thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and also the new enlarged cooling system alongside the inclusion of the bypass charging feature. Seriously, Samsung – you need to highlight the bypass charging feature a lot more. For the price – well, I know some regions have the same price whereby some regions have a slight increase over the S22 Ultra. I’m not going to judge this phone by its price because it surely is expensive. However, if you want the best, uncompromised flagship smartphone that is also a hybrid gaming smartphone, then this is the one to get.

So are you more tempted by the Galaxy or the Pixel? Which is the best phone in 2023? Well, I prefer the tidier Pixel 7 Pro setup with some excellent unique features, plus those more natural camera results. However, the Samsung S23 Ultra's package of performance, longevity and S Pen action will be far too tempting for others.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset rather than Samsung's Exynos efforts, so gaming is sublime and battery life also seems just as good as the S22 version. And One UI 5.1 is certainly packed with features, although the doubling up of apps with Google is still annoying. But the S Pen stylus is a solid USP, which others like the iPhone 14 Pro Max don't offer.

Incremental and generational progress. That’s what the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra brings to the table. On one hand, the $1,199 flagship doesn’t divert too far from its predecessor’s design. The phones even share the same dimensions and battery size. That doesn’t mean that Samsung hasn't made a few leaps and bounds. First, there’s the 200MP camera that Samsung is hyping up for its night photography capabilities. Then, you have the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform that finally surpasses the iPhone's seemingly unbeatable mobile chipset in some tests for the first time in years. And finally, there’s Samsung’s focus on connectivity which is building an ecosystem similar to Apple. It all sounds good on paper and our initial lab tests are all good news for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but now I settle into my real-world testing to put the camera through its paces and see how those impressive benchmarks handle my daily routine.

Overall, this feels like a mild spec bump over the S22, new chip and massive camera improvement on the S23 Ultra aside. The hardware hasn’t changed all that much, and you even get mostly the same cameras as before on the S23 and S23+, just with some software enhancements. As with the iPhone 14, it feels like customers are getting shortchanged here, especially considering that the prices have gone up quite a bit over last year:

I think there's two ways to look at the Galaxy S23 Ultra. As an upgrade over the S22 Ultra it's marginal, almost like a half-mast 'S' edition rather than full-blown next-level upgrade. But as a standalone device it's an exceptional, refined and accomplished piece of hardware that's easily among the best Android phones you could consider. Thing is, it's 2023, and with people tightening their belts and the year-on-year mobile phone market down on sales by more than it has been in almost a decade, there's a newfound consumer focus on how much things cost. And the Galaxy S23 Ultra obviously isn't budget. Indeed, its asking price may surprise you – namely because, in the UK at least, it's £100 more, or near to 9% more, than the S22 Ultra predecessor was at launch just last year. In Australia, it's a similar deal, with the S23 Ultra receiving a AU$100 price increase over its predecessor. If you want the latest and greatest then the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has clear appeal. Considered against its nearest competition of the recent past, however, and its asking price may just come across as being a little too higher for a moderate upgrade model.

Unless you are already using a Galaxy S22 Ultra, the Galaxy S23 Ultra follows the same formula of Samsung going all-in and offering its best features and components to its premium flagship device. It also remains to be one of the very few phones to have a stylus built-on, so the Galaxy S23 Ultra is geared towards power users who work a lot with their phone.

Samsung is ready to take its Ultra branding to the final frontier — at least, as far as its mobile products go. After introducing an Ultra variant of its tablets last year, the company is launching a similarly high-specced model of its Galaxy Book laptops in 2023. Alongside the new S23 series of flagship phones, Samsung launched the Galaxy Book 3 Pro, Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 and Galaxy Book 3 Ultra at its Unpacked event in San Francisco today. The star of the show, however, is the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra, and it’s a beast of a machine. It uses Intel’s Core i7 and i9 processors, and those are paired with NVIDIA’s RTX 4050 and 4070 graphics cards respectively. The i7 model comes with 16GB of DDR5 RAM while the i9 configuration has 32GB.

Samsung is launching the new Galaxy S23 series at its Unpacked event in San Francisco today, and this year’s trio of phones are no surprise. Most of the changes to the standard S23 and S23 Plus models feel incremental, while the biggest update to the S23 Ultra is a new 200-megapixel rear camera, enhanced selfie shooter and a few software updates. Some other improvements are less obvious, like a tweak in the curvature of the phone’s screen, different materials used in the case and the latest Qualcomm processors.

So, what if Samsung did something it never really does, but that actually makes a lot of sense? Let me explain. For years the Galaxy S series has been the company's creme of the crop. Their best of the best in design, hardware, cameras and software. What the company has never done with it is iterate. Ever since generation one, every single Galaxy S has had its own design story. The S2 looked nothing like the S1, and so on and so forth ever since 2010. It's just not a common thing for Samsung to stick to a design for a second year at least on this lineup. We've seen it with the Galaxy A53, and also some of its laptops, but not their Galaxy S. This would be the first time we see sort of see this, but I'm actually gonna tell you that it makes sense if you didn't judge a book by its cover. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and after spending a bit over two hours with Samsung's new flaghships, there's a lot to share in today's hands-on.

This year, more than ever, Samsung seems to have packed enough hardware in the Galaxy S23 Ultra in order to distance it from the Galaxy S23+, and even last year's Galaxy S22 Ultra. With only a few premium flagships announced so far in India bearing the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, Samsung has secured a solid lead with its early launch. Whether its custom SoC actually translates into better gaming performance compared to say, the iQoo 11 5G (Review), or if its new camera system is really able to offer better low-light performance compared to the previous model and other heavy-hitters such as the Google Pixel 7 Pro (Review), are something that we need to wait and see. In my testing, the S23 Ultra’s camera array is overall better than the S22’s, and I’m excited to put it through its paces once I get my hands on a review device. Alongside its shiny new 200-megapixel camera, I’ll test out its other three sensors, and put the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 through the wringer, alongside the 12GB of RAM and 5,000mAh battery. On the other hand, the S23 and S23+ are pretty much the same as last year’s devices, with upgraded camera software and a better selfie shooter. The S23 starts at $1,099.99 for the 128GB model and $1,179.99 for the 256GB variant. The 265GB S22+ is available for $1,399, and the 512GB variant comes to $1,559. Lastly, the Ultra comes in at $1,649.99 for the 256GB model, the 512GB variant costs costs $1,889.99, and the Samsung exclusive 1TB costs costs $2,209. While previous rumours said the phones would be more expensive, this luckily isn’t the case. In fact, the S22 Ultra’s 128GB model was priced at $1,649.99, the same as the S23 Ultra’s 256GB. Samsung cutting the 128GB storage variant from the Plus and Ultra options was definitely a solid choice on the tech giant’s part. The S23 series comes in ‘Lavender” ‘Green,’ ‘Cream’ and ‘Phantom Black’ and are now available for pre-order. Further, the Galaxy S23 and S23+ are also available in ‘Lime’ and ‘Graphite’ while the S23 Ultra is available in ‘Lime,’ ‘Graphite,’ ‘Red’ and ‘Sky Blue’ colourways exclusively on Samsung’s website.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra doesn’t redesign the wheel, instead offering more of an iterative upgrade to keep it competitive in 2023. There is new tech like the addition of a 200MP snapper that, if early hands-ons are any indication, could offer vast improvements to low-light photography, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy should boost performance, but there may not be enough to tempt those who already have an S22 Ultra. For everyone else though, the Galaxy S23 Ultra looks like it could potentially retain its crown for another year, though we’ll have to wait and see how it stacks up once we’ve got it in for review.

So let's try and summarize everything. Say you're the owner of a Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S22+, and you're looking at this pair and wondering if you should upgrade. The pre-booking campaign didn't offer enough in the way of discounts to really make a difference. The slight spec differences are also not enough to coax people into an upgrade. Well, perhaps disgruntled owners of the smaller Galaxy S22 might seek refuge in the Galaxy S23's potential battery improvement but that may be an edge case. The outlook isn't as grim for potential buyers of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Whether you own a Galaxy S22 Ultra or are in the market for the best possible smartphone, the S23 Ultra has something to entice you. We're banking on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 to bring a tangible difference to both performance and battery life. The new 200MP camera has the potential to be much better than the stalwart 108MP.

Samsung has just shown off the Galaxy S23 series and straight up, it is evident that Samsung has done exactly what Apple did with the iPhone 14 last year; except that Samsung is using the latest chip on all models. The Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra use the much hyped enhanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip as part of the Snapdragon for Galaxy initiative. Other than that, a few tweaks here and some mild updates there make the Galaxy S23 series fresh enough to let Samsung call it a day. Is this good or a missed opportunity?

Overall, It’s clear that Samsung’s new S23 flagships are iterative. And while these handsets deliver solid specs and features, the design language here is very familiar. Still, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a welcome update – especially for those who have endured Samsung’s Exynos chips – and the S23 Ultra’s 200MP main shooter is rather promising. Yes, you’ve seen a lot of this Samsung Galaxy before and certainly shouldn’t rush up to upgrade if you already own a recent model. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Of course, we would have liked faster charging, a revolutionary camera setup, or a groundbreaking redesign, but incremental improvements are just part and parcel of the mature smartphone ecosystem. What Samsung has done here is take what can be changed without much difficulty and cost, and refined it that bit further. Furthermore, that consistency is allowing Samsung to support its products longer-term. The Galaxy S23 series still comes with an Android-leading update pledge of four-year OS and five-year security patches. Meanwhile, eschewing ultra-fast charging might seem less sexy, but it will help the batteries last many years. The company also offers decent trade-in value on older models should you want to upgrade early. With Galaxy S23 prices the same as last year in the US (due in no small part to the phone’s familiarity), the Galaxy S23 series continues to stand out as a solid long-term investment. Our hands-on time has confirmed that Samsung still knows how to build great phones, even if they’re not going to blow your mind anymore.

There’s clearly a lot to talk about when it comes to the S23 Ultra’s cameras – I’m looking forward to testing them very soon – and there are a few other bits to get excited about, too. The inevitable speed improvements will likely be welcome, as will the bigger focus on using more recyclable materials in the manufacturing process, but this might not be enough to sway prospective buyers come release day. We also need to talk about the price. The S23 Ultra starts at £1,249 for the base 256GB version, rising to £1,399 and £1,599 for the 512GB and 1TB models. Last year’s S22 Ultra started at £1,149, which makes for a substantial increase of £100 this year. With a release slated for 17 February, it won’t be long before we find out whether the S23 Ultra justifies the extra outlay. Stay tuned for my full review in the coming weeks.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is without a doubt one of the most important phones of 2023. It's Samsung very best flagship in a traditional, non-folding form factor. With a new Snapdragon heart for all models, it has way better chances to sell well, plus a new 200MP camera might just be the motivation buyers need. We are excited about the S23 Ultra, but there is one last piece of the puzzle that we know nothing about: the price. Will Samsung follow the industry trend and raise the price of the S23 Ultra? We are yet to see, but be sure that we will be updating you with the latest on the phone as the news comes in.

Qualcomm Adreno 740:
