The Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus is a big-screen smartphone that delivers strong overall performance, particularly in terms of its screen, camera, and processing power. However, if you’ve bought a flagship smartphone in the last couple of years then it’s unlikely to be worth switching to this one, as it offers just a modest improvement rather than a revolutionary change.

All told, Samsung nailed it with the Galaxy S21 Plus. It has most of the strengths of the smaller S21 in a bigger package. If you don’t want to shell out $1,199 for the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the Plus model is the next best choice if you prefer a big phone. Samsung might have pared back the features on the S21 and S21 Plus, but I think it works in this phone’s favor. Having the display tuned down to 1080p works just fine, especially in the adaptive refresh rate mode. If you’re using a Galaxy S20 Plus, however, this isn’t a worthy upgrade. The software features Samsung introduced with the S21 will trickle down to your device, if they haven’t already. You still have excellent performance, an awesome display, and plenty of camera power to keep you happy. Moreover, if you’re using a Galaxy S20 FE, then I strongly recommend against upgrading to the Galaxy S21 or S21 Plus. Samsung put out a great phone with the S20 FE and it’s honestly the best Android competitor to the S21 and S21 Plus at this point.

If you are looking for a flagship with a great design, great screen, speakers, decent performance, battery and cameras - then yes. If you do not mind the lack of a microSD card slot, minijack, headphones and charger included - all the more. However, if you want something smaller - you have an almost identical Galaxy S21 model! And it is this choice that I like the most in this year's Galaxy S. We choose a larger or smaller smartphone, not weaker or stronger ... Of course, Galaxy S21+ is more expensive than the base model. In my opinion, it is worth paying extra for a larger display.

The Galaxy S21 Plus is a superb phone on its own merits, but it offers little that you don't get with the regular, and cheaper, Galaxy S21, apart from its larger screen. But if screen size is a deal-breaker for you, and you're happy to pay a bit more for the extra real estate, then you'll be plenty satisfied with the middle sibling in the S21 family.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, my final thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus are largely the same as they were for the S21. It’s an astonishingly good, top-shelf handset, and it’s a smartphone that should serve you well for the coming years, if you can afford it. Is it worth spending the extra £180, though? Probably not. The entry-level model is still the best value of the bunch, since the S21 Plus’ only benefits – a slightly better battery life and a marginally bigger screen – aren’t the most groundbreaking of bonuses. Save yourself a bit of money and buy the Samsung Galaxy S21 instead, an extra two hours of battery life for almost £200 more really isn’t worth it.

Samsung’s Galaxy S21+ 5G is the middle seat of the company’s current high-end S21 series, squeezed between the slightly smaller S21 5G and the top-of-the-line S21 Ultra 5G. It sports a 120 Hz, 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, slightly larger than its sibling S21, but with the same resolution (2400 x 1080), and has a centered hole punch for the selfie camera. Here we are testing the US and China version, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset, as opposed to the Exynos version available in the rest of the world. Both have 8 GB memory with either 128 GB or 256 GB storage.

This is the latest offering from Samsung to cross my desk. While it supports 5G it also works perfectly well for those of us who do not have those faster transfer speeds available on our doorsteps. The phone feels very solid with what looks to me a light violet back, and, on this back, three cameras in a vertical line at the top left corner that look like a set of traffic lights, for some reason this area is in a gold colour which draws your eye to it, so why not smile.

The Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G (Exynos) delivers satisfying stills performance, with pleasant color and accurate exposure despite more noise and clipped highlights than we like to see at this price point. Video performance could be better for a Samsung flagship, considering the higher-than-expected noise. Overall, however, the S21+ 5G (Exynos) will get the job done for Samsung users who want a bigger screen than the S21’s which delivers near identical image quality in all areas.

With the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung has changed the relative positioning of these three smartphones. If you want the absolute best, then the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the one to pick. Yes, its size makes it a bit unwieldy, but it has the best cameras and a higher-resolution curved-edge display.

Over the last few weeks, I've split my time between the three members of the S21 family. There's no denying the S21 Ultra is the "best" phone in the group in terms of specs, but it's not really the best to hold. That phone is heavy and awkward, but the S21+ is damn sleek. I feel like I've got a good grip on this phone—the weight and balance are such that I don't get nervous without a case, whereas the S21 Ultra always feels like it wants to tumble out of my hand. The flat screen on the S21+ is definitely a selling point, and the 1080p resolution hasn't bothered me.

This Galaxy sits in a middle position in the S21 range, looking fairly costly for a device that's not Samsung's top offering. There's plenty on offer here, however, and it will make a great phone for many - but, that said, it has plenty of close rivals to consider too.

The Samsung S21+ finds itself in a tricky position, and that makes it a difficult product to recommend. Having used the device for close to two weeks, I couldn’t come up with a single critical standout feature that would make recommending the S21+ easy. While Samsung itself offers a lot of competition at that price point with its older-gen devices, there are new-generation launches from rivals that are yet to arrive. Unlike the S21 Ultra, which, with a lot of unique features, comfortably wears the flagship crown, the S21+ is neither here nor there. I am in no way implying that the S21+ is a bad device – far from it. But allow me to elaborate on that in the detailed review that follows. Let’s first get the major features of the S21+ out of the way.

At this point in Samsung's device strategy, the Galaxy S21+ is certainly the one going through an identity crisis. The Galaxy S21 has its compact size going for it, whereas the Galaxy S21 Ultra has all the fanciest and most advanced tech in Samsung's arsenal. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21+ is... just an oversized Galaxy S21 with a larger battery. There's no signature feature that makes it stand out.

The Galaxy S21 Plus brings some serious upgrades over the predecessor with regard to design and performance. Besides, it brings 5G network support, which future-proofs you for the time 5G services roll out in India. Therefore, consider the Galaxy S21 Plus for its exquisite design, sleek performance and all-round connectivity. Otherwise, you are better off with the Galaxy S20 Plus, which is now significantly cheaper and excels over the Galaxy S21 Plus on display and camera parameters. If not averse to Chinese brands, you might like to explore the Xiaomi Mi 10 and OPPO Find X2, both of which offer more for prices significantly lower than what you pay for the Galaxy S21 Plus.

I understand that the Galaxy S21+ is tantalizingly close to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which costs only $199 more. If you can spend that extra bit of cash then the Ultra is a no-brainer. It has an even larger display (which is also curved), has much more powerful cameras, a bigger battery etc.

I think the Galaxy S21+ is a good phone, a more polished version of the Galaxy S20+. If you are planning to upgrade from the Galaxy S20 to the Galaxy S21+, keep using your current phone for another year or so. But if you are coming from the Galaxy S9 or S10, the Galaxy S21+ will surely impress you. At Rs 81,999, the S21+ is not cheap—but this price is fair for a flagship Samsung phone that aims to compete with the iPhone 12 series.

In terms of specifications, the Galaxy S21+ might look very similar to the Galaxy S20+ on paper. However, Samsung has enhanced the user experience in every way, and it shows. The Galaxy S21+ has a sense of refinement that the Galaxy S20+ simply lacked. The firm might be heavily promoting the Galaxy S21 Ultra and its 108MP primary camera, but it is the Galaxy S21+ which is the star of the show for me. It is not too big, offers great performance and battery life, packs a competent camera setup, and offers all this at a pretty reasonable price tag for a flagship smartphone.

Speaking of charging, as you've heard the news, there's no charger in the box. Samsung has once again followed Apple in this instance, but you know what they say, "first you mock them, then you join them". We've used Samsung's 25W charger to measure how quickly it juices up from 0% to 100%, and it does in 70 minutes. Quick enough for the most part, though other Android devices definitely zoom past that with way faster charging speeds.

The Plus model in the Galaxy S range was Samsung’s flagship phone just a couple of years ago, but with the introduction of the S20 Ultra last year it took something of a backseat. The gap between the models widens with the S21 series, and it feels like Samsung is very much pushing the most demanding users in the direction of the Ultra – very much like we saw it do with the Note 20 series. The S21 Plus could become a hard phone to recommend, given that last year’s S20 Plus has the same camera setup and screen size, but with a higher resolution; the S21 Plus has a better chipset and a larger battery, but anyone looking for either of those should look at the S21 Ultra, which ups the game in every way.

While it sounds like a lot of praise for the current batch of Galaxy S phones by Samsung, we're also not blind to the missteps that came with the Galaxy S21 series. If you ask us, the Koreans should've kept microSD compatibility instead of removing it, and bring back 1440p on to the S21 and S21+ for the people who actually know how to use them. The real shame is the removal of a charging adapter. Indeed, Samsung could've found it in them to at least give a universal fast-charging adapter, considering the sticker prices of these premium devices.

Since it was a hands-on before the official launch, we had limited time and space to explore the Galaxy S21 series with. We used the time to better understand Director's View, a new feature joining Samsung's already pro-grade series of cameras and camera functionalities. In a nutshell, Director's View is a unique live-editing feature for video recording. It has three main components. There's a key video feed that takes up most of the recording and a picture-in-picture feed of the opposing, user-facing camera. Three other video feeds on the right allow the user to preview the look and feel coming from Samsung's other rear lenses running in real-time (called Live Thumbnail). Tapping on any of the three feeds would swap the main feed out for the other. In a completed recording, you actually do not see any of previews from other lenses - only the picture-in-picture feed and the main, world-facing footage remains.

Commentaire
ARM Mali-G78 MP14:
