The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is an almost a parody of the excesses of smartphone design, from its ginormous 6.9-inch display to its 108MP camera and 100x zoom. It’s the hypercar of flagship handsets, among sports cars. All this is to say that while the Galaxy S20 Ultra was indeed very impressive at launch, Samsung's other premium handsets tend to be cheaper with fewer of the S20 Ultra's more frivolous bells and whistles, or of a similar price with more impressive specs and features. Once upon a time, the S20 Ultra was indeed the king, but those times have long since changed.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is nearly the pinnacle of Android phablets — and it should be for $1,299. It offers a best-in-class display, a better S Pen experience and a boatload of features for work and play. The cameras are very good, fixing the focusing problem with the Galaxy S20 Ultra, and the powerful zoom and Xbox gameplay give the Note 20 Ultra a couple of advantages over the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the superior camera phone based on our testing, as it includes a bigger main sensor that lets in more light, a LiDAR sensor that speeds up autofocus and Dolby Vision video recording and editing. And the new iPhone boats a tougher Ceramic Shield display. But it lacks the Note 20 Ultra's 120Hz display and S Pen support. Some may prefer the newer Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra for $1,199. It delivers a faster processor, even better cameras and optional S Pen support.

Phew. For once, there’s plenty to talk about with a new Samsung flagship, and I’m sure there are a few things I’ve missed out. There’s certainly room for me to discuss the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s network capabilities – it supports all 5G standards including mmWave – but this review is already bulging at the seams in its current state, so I’ll add to it at a later date. Instead of waffling on for much longer, I’d like to close things out by simply saying that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is the most impressive Android smartphone that’s ever been released. Not only is it remarkable in its approach to offering new features, but the entire experience is so well refined that Samsung barely places a foot wrong.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra goes big in every way imaginable, with 108MP photos, a 100x camera zoom, 40MP selfies, and a 6.9-inch 120Hz display. With over-the-top internal specs on a par with some laptops, you'll pay more for this phone than any non-foldable phone before it, but that's not surprising. What is surprising are some of the bugs we've encountered that keep the Ultra from reaching its full potential.

If you don't have the money to burn and don't need superzoom, there are some terrific alternatives. The $799 Galaxy S21 doesn't have the superzoom but has the future network support; ditto the $799 iPhone 12. The $749 OnePlus 8T has speedy software and super-fast charging. The $699 Galaxy S20 FE lacks the superzoom and future network support, but has everything you probably need right now. That said, the S21 Ultra can be a good investment if you prefer Android and Windows, enjoy photography as a hobby, and want a high-end phone that will serve you well for years.

A very good display performance for Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, particularly for motion and for video, where it bested all but the TCL Pro in nearly all sub-categories. Indeed, its only real weakness was for touch accuracy, which likely disqualifies it in the eyes of any serious gamers. But along with motion and video, its decent brightness and color, and good control of motion blur all contribute to its well-deserved spot on the Display quality podium.

However, if you aren’t interested in the Note 20 Ultra for whatever reason, the S20 Ultra is still a good investment. It’s unbelievably powerful, lasts for ages on a charge, has a good camera, and will receive software updates for years. It will also continue to be a powerhouse for a long time as 6G isn’t coming down the pipeline any time soon and smartphone processors aren’t making substantial leaps in power next year, either.

So we recently did a survey of whether Malaysians prefer playing games on a smartphone or the PC/console, and we thought the result would be a close tie but that's not the case. Consistently good exposure, color, and detail make the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra a good all-rounder for smartphone photography. Its ultra-wide camera and bokeh effects in Portrait mode are particularly impressive; and with good video performance in 4K mode, together with a host of other resolution and slow-motion recording settings, there are plenty of possibilities for capturing moving images, too.

That said, the S20 Ultra is not a phone for everyone. Plenty of people still prefer smaller phones that they can use more easily with just one hand, and the bulky dimensions and camera bump may even strike others as clunky. However, for those who want a powerhouse device that can handle anything you throw at it, the S20 Ultra steps up to the plate wonderfully. The Exynos 990 SoC is a decent upgrade, and you get an excellent camera, great battery life, and a gorgeous display. If you're willing to pay the price for it, what's not to like?

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is Samsung's flagship $1400, which is the most expensive mass market premium phone they've ever made. While a lot of things are great with the Ultra, like the display, the performance, the speakers, the specs and the battery life.. the camera system is a bit disappointing after paying $1400. We talk about what we enjoyed about the S20 Ultra in the past month, as well as the things we think ultimately lead to poor sales numbers for this flagship phone.

As usual, Samsung packed a lot of camera features in the S20 Ultra, but its real challenge is in improving the software that has to augment said features. They managed to squeeze in the largest image sensor of any phone. That’s a wonderful achievement, but as with any phone, the diminutive sensor and lens sizes mean software has a huge responsibility.

In this video we test how well the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra's camera performs with both photo and video as far as autofocus accuracy and speed. The s20 has had issues with bad focusing resulting in focus hunting and out of focus photos and videos. We test the 108MP main camera and the telephoto 100X space zoom camera for tracking, rack focusing, and spot focusing with people and static subjects comparing multiple firmware options.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has some pretty amazing camera hardware. Unfortunately, at this stage, their software does not match. In saying that that does not mean that they cannot improve it in the future. I dare say that’s why we haven’t seen a DxOMark score just yet — they are looking to get the software to an improved level before exposing it to that scrutiny.

In comparison, the Galaxy S20+ fits well in your hand, is equally fast and has the Single Take camera mode. It’s a 5G phone with a good display and knocks off $200 from the tab. Well, if you are ready to spend $1200, you may as well go all out and get the flagship 2020 piece. The software needs a desperate upgrade, otherwise, you are good to go.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra the best that Samsung currently has to offer? In terms of all the features and hardware that they packed in this massive smartphone, that’s a resounding yes. The S20 Ultra has one of the best displays around, the best processor that they currently produce, and all the camera features you could hope for with an extremely high megapixel count to boot.

Taking everything into consideration, we’d say the software update delivered mixed results at best. While it’s true that the camera app is less frustrating to use, this small victory is offset by the noisier images. We can lay some of the blame at the feet of the S20 Ultra camera’s main 108MP sensor. Even binned down to 12MP, it relies on the slightly older phase detection autofocus method when compared to the sensor is the S20 and S20 Plus, which use dual-pixel autofocus.

The S20+ I feel is a proper successor to the S10+, and I’m even willing to switch over to it as a daily device. The 120Hz screen remains incredible no matter the battery life impact, and the cameras are still plenty good, even if not class-leading. The users in Snapdragon markets in particular end up with a device that makes very few compromises and is seemingly worthy of being a top class 2020 flagship. I just hope that Samsung will be able to resolve the camera discrepancies between the different models, as well as generally improve the camera picture quality over the coming months. If they achieve this, then I feel that the new phones would warrant their release price tags.

If the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra doesn’t outshine its strongest competitors in the audio area, it still delivers a very consistent, above-average performance. Volume is good, artifacts are well controlled, dynamics are generally respected, and timbre performance is good, whether in playback or recording. That all said, the memo app records in mono, and if you’re a fanatical selfie videographer, note that selfie videos suffer from a lack of treble, which impairs numerous audio attributes (tonal balance, attack, speech clarity, distance, natural background rendering).

The Samsung Galaxy S-series is what defines the Samsung flagship experience. It sets the tone not just for Samsung, but also for the rest of the industry. This is because it’s usually the first major smartphone launch of the year. This year, the standout model from Samsung’s lineup is definitely the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. For me though, the wireless charging is the solution to the less than decent battery life of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. If you want to be able to use your Galaxy S20 Ultra at its best, grab yourself a decent wireless charger to continually top up the battery throughout the day. Without that you will undoubtedly require a wired top up of close to 30 minutes at some stage late in the working day.

In our opinion, ditch that factory-installed screen protector if you want a more reliable, faster fingerprint sensor (than the Samsung one out of the box). It is extremely annoying sitting at a checkout waiting for a phone to unlock properly. At this stage we cannot confirm that a tempered glass screen protector works better but it certainly would struggle to be worse.

The entire Galaxy S20 lineup has a 120Hz display panel, 8K video recording, and full 5G support in addition to all of the software features. Picture quality from the main cameras is also pretty similar on all three, so take your pick from the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20+. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has a camera unlike anything else on the US market—but in my mind, it flies a little too close to the sun. Usable 10x zoom is terrific, never mind the gimmicky 30x or the useless 100x. But the camera still takes longer to focus than a $1,400 device should, and it doesn't stand out in low light.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has to prove a lot to justify its ultra-high price tag of PHP69,990 (12GB + 128GB). For PHP14,000 more than the S20+, you’re essentially getting a bigger screen, bigger battery, faster charging, a new set of cameras, and the vague possibility of 5G (here in the Philippines at least).

I think overall, the 108MP performed alright on the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. Its strength lies in taking long-distance shots just like the two building photos above. When cropped or zoomed-in, the device managed to retain the quality as expected without much-pixelated boxes in it. This is really useful when you have a photo you want to crop, cutting out the stuff that you don't want.

There's little to fault the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra on aside from its price. The camera is fantastic as is the device as a whole. The QWHD+ display is gorgeous and the 120Hz refresh rate makes something as simple as browsing through menus an utter joy. Unfortunately a lot of the features won't be used by the majority of people and as such the S20 Ultra is best suited for creators and power users. For everybody else we recommend the S20 and S20+ as the silicon and displays are the same but you won't be paying for features you likely won't ever use.

For us, the Galaxy S20+ seems like a much better buy that maintains a big 4500 mAh battery, large 6.7-inch display and all the flexibility and future performance of both Sub-6 and mmWave 5G connectivity (Galaxy S20 standard only supports Sub-6). Regardless, the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G will appeal to power users that want it all, with no compromises. There’s still a lot of work to do until we get the full review finished, notably still waiting on the Exynos variants of the devices. One aspect that I want to make note of right now is that there’s been some concerns in regards to the battery life aspect of the new 120Hz mode of the phones, and I can confirm that in this setting the S20 Ultra showcases worse battery life than the S10+ (-10% in our web test), even though the new unit has a more efficient SoC as well as a 21% bigger battery. Samsung’s implementation of the 120Hz mode comes at quite a large power hit that’s very disappointing in how it behaves, and the device in general seems not quite as efficient even at 60Hz.

The with the word 'Ultra' in its name, the Galaxy S20 Ultra sounds like the biggest, baddest, best smartphone on the market. But... in reality, it is a great combination of specs, but they are all specs weve seen before in other phones. There is nothing *new* with the S20 Ultra; nothing more than the incremental step forward we always get with new devices. But with that incremental improvement, the price took a huge hike. One small step for phones, but a giant leap for your wallet. ha. Just thought that up myself.

The new S20 phones are shaping up to be very capable phones, even if they don't deliver anything super groundbreaking outside of the camera capabilities. As before, they're iterative upgrades on their predecessors, but they come with vital quality of life improvements, such as the higher refresh rate and more responsive display and smaller hole-punch camera. They're not life-changing, but they do matter, and of course Samsung has continued to improve the camera while still creating one of the sleekest-looking Android phones around.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra - Here are 5 things I like about it.

There's definitely a uncouth, almost brutal way in which the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra assaults the Android phone market in my mind, with it wielding hyper premium hardware, connectivity and camera specs like a barbarian warlord in the midst of battle. Few, if any, Android rivals can stand mano-a-mano with the Ultra right now and walk away triumphant — it is simply too well equipped and Samsung is simply too well versed in creating quality flagship phones. The price will make many people's eyes water, and it is obviously far too much phone for the majority of users, but if you are a tech enthusiast and have pockets deep enough to wield it, then the S20 Ultra is impossible not to recommend.

The S20 Ultra is a statement piece. You pull it out, with its huge camera bump and massive display, to show that you can afford a $1,400 smartphone. And while it’s nice to have such a giant display, it’ll likely prove too large for most consumers.

Samsung has the S20 and S20 Plus for the mainstream, and it now has the S20 Ultra for those who want more and aren’t willing to sacrifice certain skills for a lower price. The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a no-compromise device: it might not be the ‘best’ in every area, but you couldn’t say Samsung skimped anywhere. The battery is huge, the megapixels aplenty and the internal options currently unmatched.

I’ve spent a week using the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra on Verizon’s network from Brooklyn to the boonies. This is the biggest phone I’ve reviewed since the monster iPhone 11 Pro Max – and it needs every cubic millimeter to pack in the glut of features Samsung loves to cram in. From a 108MP camera to a “100X” zoom lens to a 120Hz display to all the 5G flavors you can use in the USA, the Galaxy S20 Ultra has it all – but it also comes bearing a heart-stopping price tag of $1399. Samsung's new flagship, the Galaxy S20 Ultra, tries to pack every single modern phone feature and the kitchen sink, and it mostly succeeds. It is Samsung's most expensive smartphone yet (not counting the foldables) and for the first time, the starting price is actually higher than on arch-rival Apple's top device, the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is… a lot. It has a big screen with a very high refresh rate, a very sharp selfie camera and support for speedy 5G. It also features a trio of advanced cameras on its rear that can shoot up to 108-megapixel-sharp pictures, 8K video and get as close as 100x to a subject. But Samsung’s camera software is pretty rough. Plus, the Ultra’s size and weight make it unwieldy and basically impossible to fit most pockets. The S20 Ultra is a good phone, But for a whopping $1,400, it needs to be more than good. And sadly it falls shy of greatness.

Samsung's Galaxy S20 Ultra is a lot of phone. Even in the era of large smartphones this feels like a massive device, but at least Samsung makes good use of the space, packing it with a 5G modem, Snapdragon 865 processor, 120hz OLED screen, a giant 5,000mAh battery, and a trio of cameras. Those cameras are really the device's flagship feature, boasting one sensor with 108MP of resolution, the ability to zoom up to 100x, and 8K video capture. Unfortunately, the camera's features are more impressive than the reality, with the resulting photos looking good, but generally not better than what the Pixel 4 or iPhone 11 can capture. The zoom is also impressive in concept, but you'll want to see the quality for yourself before you drop $1,400 for this mammoth phone.

It’s worth waiting to see if Samsung can update its camera software to resolve the focus and face issues. I’ve asked for comment on if one is coming and will update this review if and when it does. Until then, Samsung has certainly proved that it can make a fast, powerful, imposing phone. It also proved that, once again, it can get caught assuming that powerful hardware is enough.

Ultimately, the S20 Ultra's camera is quite a comprehensive package that will make most folks pretty happy. Unlike the Pixel 4 XL, there are no glaring omissions, and the only thing you can really find fault with is Samsung's post-processing, which is mostly a matter of preference and opinion. Samsung has checked all the right boxes, and the super high resolution sensor and long zoom will help it stand out from the crowd.

Our early assessment of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra's camera has us cautiously excited but also underwhelmed - about equal parts of those. We didn't expect it to be capable of doing 100x zoom and it really isn't, not even close - so why the stupid branding? On top of that, it's unpleasantly, but also predictably, somewhat handicapped when doing the 2x zoom most folks coming from other phones would be used to.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra answers the question of what tech companies can make when price isn’t a concern. So it’s little surprise that it has a quad-lens camera system that sets a new standard for the industry. Or that it supports blisteringly-fast 5G networks that carriers have barely even built out yet. Or that it has a 120Hz screen you don’t really need, can capture 8K video you can’t really watch, and has a massively oversized battery to compensate for those excesses.

Samsung melds 5G speeds, 108MP photos, a 100x camera zoom, and a 6.9-inch display to create a smartphone that’s going to turn heads. But not surprisingly, given the over-the-top specs on a par with laptops, you’re going to be paying more for it than any non-foldable phone before.

It’s not all just pure hardware though, Samsung has also added a very useful One Take feature that captures a shot using every conceivable mode and filter on the phone with just one press of a button so that you needn’t have to get your subject to continue reposing all the time. This feature is amazing, more so when pressed for time and you need to capture a lot of different footage styles.

There’s no doubting the S20 Ultra is the most exciting of the handsets Samsung has just announced. However, its high price and large footprint mean it won’t be for everyone. It’s clear that Samsung has packed pretty much everything it has into the Galaxy S20 Ultra, and it appears to live up to its name; it’s a serious achievement on a technical level. It’s undoubtedly the most advanced phone Samsung has ever made, and yet first impressions of the device have somehow left us a little cold. The vanilla S20 boasts many of the Ultra’s best features - such as the 120Hz screen - and the only thing that’s really unique to the Ultra is the souped-up ‘Space Zoom’, but whether that alone is reason to upgrade is debatable.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra does two things for Samsung. It’s a symbol of Samsung’s technological dominance. Commentaire
ARM Mali-G77 MP11:
