And that will be the theme of my verdict on the OnePlus Nord CE. For the money, it’s perfectly good. Performance is solid, the display is excellent, build and design are on point and the camera delivers crisp, well-exposed photos in most circumstances. Combine that with the superb battery life and you have a phone that ticks all the right boxes. The OnePlus Nord CE may not have the star quality of its premium sibling, the OnePlus 9 Pro, and it might not be a huge upgrade on its predecessor, but it’s a mighty fine handset in its own right.

I feel the bigger question is – should there be a Nord CE 2? If it's going to be more like the CE, then probably not. OnePlus so far has operated at a different level as compared to the competition and that is what has made it special. It cannot expect to play Xiaomi or Realme’s game and win just like that. If it intends to, they need to be better equipped. Most aspects of the Nord CE are fine, barring the drop in processing power and camera, and those are the areas the company needs to focus on in the Nord CE 2. It does make sense to have a OnePlus phone in the Rs 20,000 to 25,000 range if the Nord (non-CE) is positioned around Rs 30,000. However, it needs to feel like a OnePlus phone, and not something generic with a OnePlus logo and OxygenOS. Maybe the company can use the main camera from a generation old OnePlus phone, like it did with the first Nord (it had the OnePlus 8 main camera). Couple it with a better midrange SoC and we may have something worthwhile. If not, just have one Nord to rule the segment each year and let the previous Nord operate in a lower segment with a price drop.

Released in June 2021, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G lands in our Advanced ($200-$399) smartphone segment. Among other attractive features, it sports a multi-camera setup with a 64 MP main camera. Let’s take a look at how it performed in our comprehensive array of battery tests. While it does not have the best autonomy or the best charging performance in our database, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G strikes a good balance between autonomy and charging, and outshines nearly all others in terms of efficiency.

The OnePlus Nord CE 5G is an affordable entry-point to the OnePlus Nord line, situated just below the original Nord in price and features. This Advanced segment phone sports a 6.43-inch 90-Hz 2400 x 1080 pixel AMOLED display, and is powered by Qualcomm’s 750G 5G chipset with 6, 8, or 12 GB of system memory and 128 or 256 GB of storage. There are three cameras on the back: a 64 MP main wide module that bins down to 16 MP output, an 8 MP ultra-wide camera, and a 2 MP monochrome module.

Objectively, the OnePlus Nord CE is not better in all respects than last year’s OnePlus Nord. But it is almost 1,000 kroner cheaper, and yet it is at least as good or even better on a number of points that are important to most consumers. That is why we give Nord CE the same grade as last year’s model, but also our special recommendation on top of the hat. For the price, you can actually not go wrong in the city with OnePlus Nord CE 5G. And then there is the fact that the mobile – like last year’s predecessor – does not have quite the same unique touch and design language that we otherwise know from OnePlus’ mobiles.

While we are yet to test the device completely and understand how it performs in real life, I still believe the pricing of the OnePlus Nord CE 5G could be more aggressive and OnePlus could have brought it down to under Rs.20,000 segment. At least the base variant. Otherwise, I am a fan of how fast the OnePlus phones charge and the overall battery life they promise.

To conclude this review, I have enjoyed my time with the OnePlus Nord CE, and that’s mostly thanks to its well-optimized OxygenOS. Still, for the price, I am not 100% convinced that it’s the best value-for-money mid-range phone right now—although it’s a decent option in the Nepali market. To compare, Samsung’s Galaxy A52 has it beat when it comes to the cameras. On the other hand, POCO F3 is a better value in terms of sheer performance. Overall, the OnePlus Nord CE is a pretty well-balanced mid-range phone mostly thanks to its optimized OxygenOS.

The OnePlus Nord CE 5G is a decent smartphone overall, that notches up recommendations for its snappy performance, speedy charging, and its classy design. However, it is by no means ahead of the rest of the pack at the same price point, as you can see from its mediocre showings with regard to its camera and battery life.

Priced Rs 22,999 onwards, the OnePlus Nord CE falls short of the expectations set by OnePlus through its marketing blitzkrieg. It justifies its core edition moniker but only in bits. As a package, it is confusing even when looked at from the value perspective because the phone is not considerably cheaper than its predecessor. Things get difficult for the Nord CE to justify its worth if it is put on scale alongside other midrange smartphones like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro Max (review) and Samsung Galaxy A52 (review). Therefore, consider the OnePlus Nord over the CE model if OnePlus is the brand you want to stick with. Otherwise, there are several options to go with in the midrange segment that can put the Nord CE in the shade – be it on paper or in real-life use.

Okay so the OnePlus Nord CE 5G isn’t particularly game-changing and I wouldn’t say it’s a better phone than the original Nord. In fact, it risks blending in against the masses of competition with its cheaper build and simpler design. But in saying that, anyone who wants to spend a bit less, needs a reliable battery and wants a decent display should definitely add this to their shortlist. If you’re on a budget, this phone doesn’t make too many compromises. It does take a bit of a hit in performance, but it’s really nothing dramatic and the phone will be able to cope with normal everyday tasks like texting and social media. The main draw of this phone is the price, and because of that, it's unlikely you're expecting a powerhouse anyway. Overall I'd say you get what you pay for, and maybe just a little bit more.

One year after OnePlus loudly stepped into the midrange and entry-level phone market with the OnePlus Nord, it’s back with the OnePlus Nord CE 5G. That “CE” at the end of its name stands for “Core Edition.” OnePlus claims the new phone strips back some of its predecessor’s less necessary features to focus on offering its “core” features at a more affordable price, similar to what Samsung offers with its “FE” (fan edition) devices.

The Nord CE a capable all-rounder, benefitting from a solid mid-range chipset, slim build, and excellent battery life - not to mention top-tier software. A plastic body and so-so camera are the major drawbacks, stopping it from ever truly standing out from the pack, but there's still a lot to recommend about it.

This phone is similar to the OnePlus Nord in terms of experience. So, for Nord users this phone makes little sense. But if you are planning to upgrade from a budget smartphone then the new OnePlus Nord CE 5G is definitely a good choice. It’s a reliable phone which does its job well with good performance and pleasing design. But the biggest advantage of buying the OnePlus Nord CE 5G is that you get a smooth software experience, the promise of Android updates, good battery life and charging speed. The Nord CE 5G will easily cater to all the needs of most smartphone users in India minus all the jazz in this price range.

The OnePlus Nord CE 5G is one of the best phones you can get in the ₹20,000-₹30,000 price range, and it’s also a very good option in the UK/Europe where prices start at £299/€299 for the 6/128GB model. It offers all the core features you’d want in a mid-range phone, including smooth performance, a decent display, great battery life, and fast charging. The fast in-display fingerprint scanner and the 3.5mm headphone jack are nice to have on a phone in this price range, and the phone’s main 64MP camera is also quite decent. The OnePlus Nord CE 5G’s great software experience is one of its major strengths, and it’s one of the main reasons I would feel comfortable recommending this phone to my friends. While OnePlus is betting big on the 5G aspect, I don’t see any reason for you to get the phone just for 5G if you live in India. India is still way behind when it comes to 5G adoption, and you’d probably have to retire this phone before 5G becomes widely available in the country.

The choices for the mid-range segment have become more compelling since the time OnePlus released its first device back in 2013. Re-entering the market segment the brand abandoned has its consequences, one of which is that it has to rebuild its fanbase. While The Nord CE does excel in areas such as design, software and battery, its shortcomings in the camera department could be a potential deal-breaker. The processing power offering by OnePlus phones has been counted as one of its biggest strengths, but in the case of the Nord CE, it isn’t really a plus point. In this price segment, there are quite a few good options present such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max (review) which has arguably the best camera in the segment along with a higher refresh rate panel. If you want 5G capabilities, then the Realme X7 (review) can be a good option at a cheaper price.

The OnePlus Nord CE is a perplexing device to say the least. It’s definitely not best-in-class, but worse still, it sits within spitting distance of the original OnePlus Nord to its detriment. The performance difference isn’t really significant, but feature ommissions like the lack of stereo speakers, the alert slider, higher-end protective glass, and the extra cameras (especially over at the front), all add up.

OnePlus Nord 'Core Edition' is something of an unusual phone in its position. The first OnePlus Nord in itself was supposed to represent the core essentials of OnePlus phones. Stripped down, but without real compromise. So in essence, the OnePlus Nord CE is a Core Edition of a Core Edition phone. But that's perhaps overthinking it a bit. What really matters is that for the money you're getting a phone without any significant flaws. It's fast and responsive, is well-designed, has a good camera and a good screen. It's comfortably one of the best phones in its price bracket. We question the removal of the alert slider though. It was one of the few remaining fixtures that helped OnePlus phones stand out from its competition. Without it, it feels like OnePlus is doing more blending in with the environment. It's transitioned away from standout phone maker, to just another phone maker and the CE is the culmination of that effort.

The OnePlus Nord CE 5G is not a ‘classic’ OnePlus phone, one that disrupts things by offering more than you usually get for the money. You’d buy one because you would prefer a relatively small, light and classy-looking phone rather than the geek-friendly, high-value giants on offer from companies like Xiaomi. I prefer the original OnePlus Nord, available for only slightly more at the time of review. But the OnePlus Nord CE 5G has its charms.

The OnePlus Nord CE 5G has adequate performance to keep up with what you throw at it, and the software experience is clean. OnePlus has also sweetened the deal by promising two years of software updates and three years of security updates, which should keep the phone up to date until you start thinking about your next upgrade. The triple camera setup can handle the basics, and given the price, there isn't much to complain about for daylight shots. Low-light camera performance is where this phone could still do with a few tweaks for improvement. The OnePlus Nord CE 5G does manage to deliver the core experience it promises, and given the starting price, it isn't hard to recommend this phone. However, the variant I've reviewed costs Rs, 27,999 and doesn't offer the same value for money as the entry-level model. For this price, you can consider the OnePlus Nord (Review), or wait for its successor rumored to launch soon. If you can spend a little extra, the Mi 11X (Review) offers higher performance.

You've probably noticed the recurring theme when comparing the Nord CE to its direct rivals - it has better performance than most, and it has a better battery life than most. Even though the camera software needs more work, the Nord CE can stand its ground in the face of competition with a compact size, great OLED display and snappy user experience. It sure has a few omissions like the microSD card support or the HDR10 video support, but they can be easily forgiven when assessing the Nord CE as a complete package. The Nord CE 5G is a great addition to the OnePlus roster, and it gets an easy recommendation from us.

In a sense, the Nord CE feels like it is trying to ride the coattails of the Nord. After all, the Nord ended up being the best-selling phone in this category for a few quarters following its debut, and by calling this device the Nord CE, OnePlus is emphasizing that it is just as good. That's not the case in day-to-day use, however, and it feels ironic that a phone dubbed the Core Edition cannot deliver on something as fundamental as the cameras. There's also the fact that the Nord CE will soon be overshadowed by the imminent arrival of the Nord 2. I revealed earlier in the year that the phone will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 platform, and it will have better cameras and faster charging. If you're in the market for a new mid-range phone in 2021, you may as well pick up the Nord right now or wait for the Nord 2 to debut shortly. The Nord CE does little to push the needle for the Nord series, and OnePlus should have had the foresight to not launch it at all.

On paper, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G offers just about enough to impress as a mid-range smartphone. However, you're still better off steering clear of this device. For the price, this new affordable phone from OnePlus does not offer enough oomph to help establish it as the alpha offering. Its biggest problem is the competition that exists in the segment, and as such, its inability to stand out from the crowd makes it look weak not only against slightly better specd devices such as the Poco X3 Pro - a phone that offers a faster display, bigger battery and a more powerful processor -- but also against the original OnePlus Nord, which despite being slightly more expensive, and a year older, looks like the better of the two phones.

The OnePlus Nord CE is one of the best options in the mid range, especially if you think it’s time to get 5G. This is a OnePlus phone that ticks all the boxes of style, performance and experience and bring it down to a more affordable price point for new users to sample. However, there are a few shortcomings as well, like the phone doesn't feel like a premium device thanks to the company's compromises to bring down the weight and price. The display isn't the best you get in this segment. The cameras also need some refinements. If you're okay with these, then you cannot go wrong with the OnePlus Nord CE 5G at all. Since I reviewed the 12GB RAM version (available at Rs 27,999), I cannot exactly comment on the 6GB RAM performance. But I believe that the 8GB RAM version (available at Rs 24,999) should be suitable for most people, even for those who are looking for a good gaming device at this price point. Of course, if you have the budget, then the 12GB RAM version is the best choice. Looking at the current sub-Rs 30,000 smartphone choices, I believe that the Nord CE is a clear winner in this segment at the moment. So, to answer, should you buy it? Yes.

Overall, I was very happy with the OnePlus Nord CE 5G despite all of its flaws. It does get the core elements of the smartphone experience right: the speed, the beautiful screen, even the design and lighter weight contribute to the comfort of using it. Yes, it does come short when you take a closer look at photos and especially at videos, and also I really wish OnePlus did not save money on the vibration motor, but unless camera is your top priority, it's easy to recommend the Nord CE and it's easy to see how it will sell in millions of copies, just like the original Nord. It's all about the price, though, and doesn't seem inspired in any way, it's just taking the successful Nord formula and cutting a few corners short, job done.

Don’t buy a OnePlus Nord CE 5G expecting the kind of red hot bargain that made OnePlus famous in the first place. OnePlus basically took the original Nord, made it cheaper to produce (and a bit worse) but has not drastically cut the asking price, by today's numbers anyway. It’s a solid phone, and still coasts by Samsung in terms of the value for money on offer. However, with stacks of competition from the other rising Chinese brands, like Xiaomi and Realme, the key appeals here are less about the OnePlus Nord CE 5G’s tech and more about what’s going on outside. The OnePlus Nord CE 5G is smaller, lighter and thinner than most affordable 5G phones, and looks more elegant than damn near all of them. That may not be enough to satisfy the old-school OnePlus crowd, but it should do the job for many.

Unlike the original Nord which came with a Snapdragon 765G processor that was just below the flagship Snapdragon 800 series, the Nord CE 5G’s Snapdragon 750G is very firmly mid-range. What’s more, there are other devices in the market that can challenge it, such as the Mi 10i, which has the same chip and a 108-megapixel camera, stereo speakers and a bigger battery, and the recently released iQOO Z3 5G which actually comes with the Snapdragon 768G processor. And if you take 5G out of the equation (it is not present in India anyway at the time of writing), the Samsung Galaxy F62 comes into contention with its older but still very fast Exynos 9825 processor, a big battery, and very good cameras. And that is the challenge the Nord CE 5G faces: while it does a lot of things well and actually delivers a “little more” than we expected, it does not exactly overwhelm its competition and has no killer feature up its sleeves. Its strongest weapon is that interface inside and that logo on the back.

We were impressed with OnePlus’ return to the budget smartphone arena last year and the Nord brand is back in 2021 with the OnePlus Nord CE. The new 'Core Edition' model comes in at an even cheaper price than last year’s Nord with prices starting at a mere £299, and it doesn’t skimp on the features either.

Commentaire
Qualcomm Adreno 619:
