You might be familiar with OnePlus as a brand with a trusted heritage of launching well-priced flagship alternatives, but the OnePlus 9’s new starting price is too high for my tastes - especially when you consider the long list of terrific handsets you could buy for less instead. There’s a good chance I would have made an exception if it did manage to outdo the rest but tally up the scores and the OnePlus 9 is middling at best. There’s no doubt in my mind that you’re better off getting a Pixel 5 or Galaxy S20 FE instead, or perhaps waiting until the OnePlus 9 is predictably superseded in less than six months from now.

Having spent a fair bit of time with the OnePlus 8, I can happily say that the OnePlus 9 is definitely an improvement on an already great formula. There’s the same killer performance onboard, with fewer gimmicks and more genuinely useful features. Wireless charging, an improved camera system, and solid software are all very welcome additions, especially at this price. Unfortunately, this extra hardware has seen OnePlus’ prices creep up once again. Even the more affordable OnePlus 9 can’t claim to be the ultimate budget buy, priced as it is so close to Samsung’s Galaxy S21 and more expensive than the Google Pixel 6. With so-so battery life, poor camera zoom, and no IP rating, I’d be more tempted to spend my money with Google or Samsung this time around. As such, the OnePlus 9 is most likely to appeal to brand enthusiasts first and foremost. It sports the same design, Hasselbrand branding, and other tagline features like a 120Hz display and ultra-fast charging as the more expensive OnePlus 9 Pro.

When I reviewed the OnePlus 9 last year, I said it was one of the best and more affordable phones you can buy. Its excellent performance, superb battery life, decent camera and super fast charging meant it was a better value than its pricier OnePlus 9 Pro sibling. That's why it earned that coveted CNET Editors' Choice Award. But since then we've seen the launch of phones like the Google Pixel 6, which also earned a glowing review thanks to its great camera, slick Android 12 interface and good overall performance. And at $599, the Pixel 6 is exactly the same price as the OnePlus 9. Undoubtedly the OnePlus 9's biggest competition today, the Pixel is the better choice if you want the neat features of Android 12 and a superior main camera. Sure, Google's Tensor processor promises improvements to AI, but we haven't seen much of that yet. The OnePlus 9's top-end Qualcomm chip makes it an absolute powerhouse, while its stronger battery life and stellar fast charging makes it excel if power is an issue. That said, The Pixel 6's aluminum and glass design feels markedly more premium than the OnePlus 9's.

The OnePlus 9 wasn't a bad purchase at launch, but it has been on the decline this last year. There was the issue with blacklisting certain apps from the high-performance CPU cores in a previous update, and that was enough for me to rescind my recommendation. Now, the software is bad in a whole host of other ways. If it had launched in this state, the OnePlus 9 would have been an easy pass, and I'm bummed for people who bought the phone expecting the OnePlus experience of yesteryear. And let's talk about the elephant in the room: the Google Pixel 6. This phone didn't come out until seven months after the OP9, but it sets a new standard in the mid-range. The Pixel 6 not only has an incredible camera, but the hardware is a step up from past Google phones. With the step back OnePlus' software has taken, the Pixel 6 is now better at everything except charging speed, and it costs the same as the reduced OP9. We can only hope that OnePlus improves in 2022 because it didn't have a good 2021. I don't know that I'm feeling optimistic about OP's changes, though.

The OnePlus 9 first appeared on the market the end of March 2021. We present here some of its key results in our array of comprehensive Display protocol tests. The OnePlus 9 put in an outstanding performance for touch smoothness and accuracy, as well for faithful color rendering. However, its overall score took a hit due to readability and video scores that were adversely affected by low brightness at the device’s default settings.

I said the OnePlus 9 Pro was the best phone OnePlus has ever made and while it over-delivers in every category save for its camera, its price might give you pause. While the standard OnePlus 9 might not share the Pro moniker of its bigger brother, it packs in everything that's most exciting about its sibling and comes with a lower price to boot. From its lightning-fast performance to its great battery, it has a solid lineup of features that all make for a nice everyday phone. Sure, it might not have some of the more glitzy features of phones like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra or the iPhone 13 Pro, but with a much more approachable starting price of $599 (£529) when bought directly from OnePlus, it represents excellent value all-round and is a great phone to consider if you're not looking for the best of the best. (There's no official Australian price, but the UK price converts to AU$971.)

Released in March 2021, the OnePlus 9’s launch price places it in the Premium ($600-$799) segment. As such, it comes packed with many attractive features, including a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. Now that OnePlus has embraced the ultra-premium end with its Pro series and the budget segment with its Nord series, it seems to have refocused on its bread and butter — the value flagship space. The OnePlus 9 is an affordable flagship with an impressive spec sheet that falls within our Premium category of devices priced between $600 – $799. It features a Snapdragon 888 chipset and a 6.55 inch, FHD+ OLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate. For photography, the OnePlus 9 features a camera configuration with primary module, ultra-wide and monochrome camera. The primary camera uses a 48 MP sensor linked to a 23mm-equivalent f/1.8-aperture lens. The ultra-wide features a 50 MP sensor and 14mm-equivalent, f/2.2-aperture, Freeform lens and a 2 MP monochrome sensor concludes the camera array. For video, the OnePlus 9 captures up to 8K footage at 30 fps and 4K at 60 fps. Let’s see how the device performed in our DXOMARK Camera tests.

OnePlus 9 will not revolutionize the phone market, but it is a solid smartphone that basically meets all the requirements we can have for a flagship. This model is to fight the iPhone 12, Xiaomi Mi 11 and Samsung Galaxy S21 with a great screen, perfectly smooth and fast interface, high performance, fast charging and cameras under which not just any company - it is the legendary Hasselblad. Is that enough? It seems to me that not entirely, the more so as the prices - compared to their rivals - are not competitive. The OnePlus 9 8/128 GB version is priced at EUR 699, while the 12/256 GB version is priced at EUR 799.

The OnePlus 9 isn’t a standout in audio at this price point, but it’s not bad either. It achieves average or slightly above average results in most use cases and below average in only a few instances, like recording artifacts and the spatial attribute for both recording and playback. In produced roughly average scores in timbre, and did fairly well in dynamics, despite a lack of bass and low end. Volume was a strong point at both ends of the scale, with more than adequate loudness at maximum volume and good intelligibility at minimum.

The OnePlus 9 nails a lot of things—it's fast, has a great screen, charges obscenely quickly, and it's a good value next to the 9 Pro. From the moment you pick up the OnePlus 9, it's full-speed ahead with smooth animations and scarcely a hint of lag. I really enjoy using this phone, and I'm willing to overlook shortcomings like the middling primary camera and only kinda fast wireless charging. I love that I have basically stopped worrying about how much charge this phone has. The lack of a telephoto camera is a bummer, but the new ultrawide sensor is impressive. It takes great macro shots and doesn't have any detectable edge distortion. I just wish OnePlus would take a closer look at the way its processing smudges fine details. It's the last thing that really keeps OP phones from competing with the imaging leaders.

There are a couple of frustrations with the OnePlus 9 that we’ve covered. The camera preview lag is a bit strange, as is the decision to drop telephoto and keep the black and white sensor for photos. The results you’ll get from the camera are really good and have improved with recent software updates, potentially further with future updates. It’s a cheaper device than the OnePlus 9 Pro and side by side, you can see as well as feel the difference. That’s not a bad thing, this feels like a device that OnePlus needed to make to combat the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and they’ve done a good job of it. At the end of the day, the battery life is good, the performance is more than acceptable and the screen makes this a really nice phone to use on a daily basis. The software is clean, giving users a stock experience with smooth and fast operation daily. The fast charging is more than enough to overcome any battery shortfall at the end of the day. It’s nearly all sunshine, rainbows and unicorns.

The OnePlus 9 has some beefy internals, which shouldn’t be a surprise for their flagship devices. As for the cameras, the snaps from the cameras are pretty sweet too in the right conditions. Overall, our OnePlus 9 5G review for the Philippines found that it’s a good phone but things could have been better given the hype behind the device. We can see why the company could have made certain choices to make this different and maybe nudge you towards the Pro version of this device but there could have been other aspects that would have given us two spectacular phones to choose from. OnePlus could have compromised in other places other than removing OIS from the camera considering the massive hype they generated with their current devices. The team up with Hasselblad is also off to a good start though but we do want to see the actual hardware that’s supposed to come from this 3 year partnership.

Until now, the biggest argument against OnePlus' phones has been the camera performance. While some inconsistencies remain, our OnePlus 9 review found that the new phone performs much better in that department when compared to the leading flagships. You'd still favor photos from the likes of the iPhone or the Google Pixel, but OnePlus is at least now in the conversation. Those improved cameras means that the OnePlus 9 should also be in the conversation if you're wondering which phone to get. Not only is the OnePlus 9 cheaper than the Galaxy S21, it also outperforms that phone. In fact, you can even expect performance on par with the ROG Phone 5, making this an affordable option for gamers. And the fast-charging, long-lasting battery on the OnePlus phones continues to impress. If you've been unsure about whether OnePlus is worth a gamble over devices from more established phone makers, let the OnePlus 9 be your assurance that this phone can hold its own against any Android device.

Having been able to compare the 9 and the 9 Pro we have a tough time advising most people spend the extra money. Yes, it does come with extras, but they’re nothing that’s necessity. Those features include faster wireless charging, a telephoto lens, optical image stabilization, mmWave 5G support, and a slightly smaller screen. Yes, the displays are technically different, too, but we bet you’d hardly notice. But as we mentioned above, we like the flat screen on the 9 better than the curved edge of the 9 Pro. We were fans of the scrappy upstart brand and the whole “Never Settle” attitude that OnePlus started out with some years back. It has gone through an occasional rough patch but we’ve come to respect it and look forward to its big releases. The OnePlus 9 builds on an increasingly strong line of devices and deserves to be included in conversations when the topic shifts to best phones. We’d love it if it were more readily available if only because more customers deserve to know about it.

The OnePlus Nord ticks all the right boxes: you get a 90Hz AMOLED display, robust hardware, 48MP camera at the back and dual cameras up front, clean software with the promise of timely updates, and 30W fast charging. OnePlus did a fantastic job distilling the essence of its flagships into the Nord, and the result is one of the best mid-range phones available today.

The OnePlus 9 starts at $729, where the OnePlus 9 Pro starts at $969, and that’s a $240 difference. You’re the only one who can decide if the telephoto camera, QHD+ display, and faster wireless charging found on the 9 Pro justify its expense. But if I were buying one today, and if I was on T-Mobile, I’d likely go for the OnePlus 9. Both flagships share so many excellent features that it wouldn’t even feel like a sacrifice.

Starting at Rs 49,999, the OnePlus 9 is a competent premium smartphone despite the absence of some premium features of the Pro model. It makes a good upgrade for OnePlus enthusiasts looking for a newer model on budget. For others, there are other Android smartphones in the same segment like the Mi 11X Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G that offer better value for money. That said, the entry-level premium smartphone segment is flourishing but not all phones are equal. Therefore, it’s best that you compare the models thoroughly before making a purchase decision.

The starting price of £629 for the entry version does put it up against some stiff competition from the likes of Samsung and also from Xiaomi with the Mi 11 coming in at a very similar price. The good news is due to the software implementation and continual and reliable updates from OnePlus I think it has enough to edge out the competition, they just need to embrace the Hasselblad partnership more to eke out the best from the cameras to make it really competitive.

At PHP 38,990, the OnePlus 9 5G is slowly approaching a price level many of us would consider as flagship, so the omission of OIS and the lack of an IP rating might be a bit of a downer. The OnePlus 9 is a compelling option for Android users looking for a sub-$1,000 phone that doesn't sacrifice too many features available in pricier flagships. It even punches above its weight class in certain areas, outperforming every Android phone on the market besides its "Pro" relative and enduring for about 11 hours on a charge. It's also worth spotlighting the fast charging feature, which gets you from dead to 100% in about 30 minutes.

OnePlus has accidentally put this phone in a really tough spot. At $729 it’s still relatively affordable in the flagship space, especially next to the $1000+ OnePlus 9 Pro. But we’re far enough along in Samsung’s product lifecycle that you can catch some pretty decent deals on the Galaxy S21 line to get them close in price to what OnePlus is asking.

The OnePlus 9 is a very good all-rounder, and should especially appeal to gaming fans due to its powerful processor and brilliant screen. OnePlus has stayed true to its signature “light touch” user interface, and the camera system has been notably improved compared to previous generations. The OnePlus 9 comes with a fix for the most glaring flaw of prior OnePlus flagships: courtesy of a partnership with Hasselblad, the cameras offer better color correction, and both regular and ultra-wide photos look great. The lack of a telephoto lens and other flagship perks found on its Pro sibling aren’t missed too much, given the relatively low price you're paying for high specs and very fast charging. If you’re hunting for a flagship Android phone at an affordable price, the OnePlus 9 is worth considering.

With the new OxygenOS out-of-the-box, outstanding performance, a very capable camera, and the great 120 Hz Fluid AMOLED display, the OnePlus 9 5G has you covered, it’s a solid and competent opponent in its class.

I love the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro, a feeling that I've had for OnePlus devices since the OnePlus 7 Pro, but not before that. The only problem, frankly, is the cameras. The cameras are decent, and I do know plenty of people who simply don't care about the camera. It's just that when you look at what Apple and Samsung are selling for similar prices, they're just offering so much more in the camera department.

OnePlus 9 comes with a starting price tag of Rs 49,999. The smartphone is a complete package and is also a powerful performer. The smartphone packs a powerful and high-end Snapdragon processor and runs the latest Android 11 operating system. The camera has been a weak point of OnePlus, with the OnePlus 9 series the company has managed to overcome that as well. The OnePlus 9 also offers the Hasselblad camera which manages to offer some stunning results. A good display, powerful loudspeaker and 65W fast charging are the brownie points which you will get with the smartphone. In our opinion, the OnePlus 9 can be your next smartphone if you have a budget of Rs 50,000.

The $730 OnePlus 9 goes up most notably against the Samsung Galaxy S21, which is $700 at Amazon and Best Buy, and the $800 Apple iPhone 12. Just being in that rarefied company is a win for OnePlus. On T-Mobile, at least, the 9 outpaces any current Google Pixel, LG, or Motorola phone thanks to its use of the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset and OnePlus's typically lovely software. The Galaxy S21 still noses ahead of the OnePlus 9, because the Galaxy S21 has a zoom camera with a 3x lens rather than OnePlus's 2x digital trickery. That's a real advantage. If you prefer OnePlus's fast-and-smooth software experience to Samsung's reputation for manufacturer and carrier bloatware, though, the OnePlus 9 is a very fine phone for the price.

The OnePlus 9 sells in India for Rs 49,999 for the 8 GB RAM / 128GB storage variant and Rs 54,999 for its 12 GB RAM variant with 256 GB storage, and you get a one-year warranty with it. That’s a good Rs 7,000 to Rs 9,000 more expensive than the OnePlus 8T with a similar RAM and storage configuration. I don’t have a problem with the company increasing the price of new phones if there are some significant improvements, but that’s not the case here. On the contrary, OnePlus has cut a few corners, a fact made apparent by the plastic frame and lack of OIS on the 9.

Lisa Gade reviews the OnePlus 9, the more affordable of two Android phones OnePlus released in spring 2021. The OnePlus 9 runs Android 11 on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 CPU with your choice 128GB or 256GB storage. Like the OnePlus 9 Pro, it features cameras co-developed with Hasselblad, and has a 48MP main camera and the same 50MP ultrawide as the Pro, but no telephoto lens. The smartphone is available unlocked or from T-Mobile in the US and it supports 5G (carrier support varies). It has a flat 6.55” OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, 65 watt super fast Warp wireless charging and it supports 15 watt Qi wireless charging. It competes with the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE.

At the beginning of this year, Qualcomm shared an interview with Liu Zuohu, who talked about the new year’s future. “Boss Zhang” made it clear that OnePlus would invest huge resources to fully develop the video experience and set a goal to be the first online high-end in the Chinese market next year One goal. Video is the best path for the OnePlus 9 series to catch up with the high-end number one. Choosing the cooperation with Hasselblad is not only an improvement in brand quality but the imaging strength of the entire OnePlus 9 series has indeed increased visible to the naked eye.

Since the OnePlus 7 series, each non-Pro OnePlus model has been meant to cater to mainstream buyers, while the Pro model was for those who want it all, with the appropriate prices. With the 9 series starting at Rs. 50,000, it appears that both models are now being targeted at the premium segment. OnePlus has gone as far as to introduce a third model this year for the Indian market, the lower-priced OnePlus 9R, which comes in to bridge the “value” gap between the OnePlus Nord and the OnePlus 9. So, should you be spending your money on the OnePlus 9?

The design may not have wowed us that much, but OnePlus knows its users are all about getting the best performance out of every area of its phones. So if cutting corners and adding in a plastic frame means being able to stick two flagship cameras on the back, add wireless charging, a capacious battery, and market-leading speed, then we think that's a compromise worth making.

If I’m being honest, I would try to talk people into the OnePlus 9 versus the OnePlus 9 Pro. To me, they’re basically the same phone, but you’re getting more value from the OnePlus 9. This phone has a great camera setup, an extremely smooth user experience, that super fast wired charging, and good software that may or may not see timely updates after 12 months. At $729, that seems like a steal to me. The Pixel 5 is $699. This OnePlus 9 is $30 more. It’s not even a question if software updates aren’t a huge priority to you. Get this phone, it’s really good. Does it have a few shortcomings? Sure, but I can argue that you’re still getting one helluva package with all of the specs you really want and need. Just don’t get mad when OnePlus releases the OnePlus 9T later this year. It’ll probably be really, really good.

An efficient, no-nonsense Android phone, the OnePlus 9 (starting at $729.99) takes many things we liked about the OnePlus 8T and puts them on the most modern Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 platform. The resulting package delivers a fast and smooth Android experience, broad network compatibility (though it lacks the fastest form of Verizon's 5G), and a very capable camera. We do miss optical zoom here, and the impressive cameras on the Samsung Galaxy S21 and the Apple iPhone 12 are enough to place them a bit ahead of the OnePlus 9 in our rankings. But if you're less of a photo hound, you'll find a lot to love in the streamlined design and elegant software.

The OnePlus 9 is a very good phone that holds its own against other (often more expensive) flagships. It has all the things that truly matter: a great screen, excellent performance, good battery life, and a capable camera. But for better or worse, it still doesn’t feel quite like a device that’s well-suited for the mainstream. It misses a couple of features present on the competition like a stabilized main camera and broad 5G support.

OnePlus 9 is being positioned as the phone for most people, a move intended to take on the iPhone 12. There aren’t drastic changes made to the OnePlus 9, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The display, new camera system, performance, and battery life all stand out. The reason I probably think you would want to pick the OnePlus 9 is because of the cameras though. If you are someone jumping straight from the OnePlus 5T or OnePlus 6, the OnePlus 9 does offer a huge improvement in the camera system. I think OnePlus never wanted to make OnePlus 9 an extraordinary device in the first place. The idea has always been to address the issues consumers had with the camera on previous-generation models.

The OnePlus 9 is the more affordable smartphone in the series, and considering its features and price, it might be the more popular one too. The new rear cameras and increase in processing power give it a nice boost over the OnePlus 8T, but on the other hand, the fact that it has a polycarbonate frame instead of aluminium really puts a damper on things. Other than these things, it's not too different compared to its predecessor.

As reviewers, it's hard to get excited about the OnePlus 9. Just as it was hard to get excited about the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 7. As a phone, it's perfectly adequate and for the most part it's quite nice to use. But at $729 starting price, it's supposed to be nice. The brakes on the OnePlus price hike train stopped working years ago and the company clearly has no plans on slowing down. So then why are things being taken away instead of being added?

Sandwiched between the OnePlus 9 Pro and the OnePlus 9R, the OnePlus 9 appears to be a very different proposition from its predecessors. The OnePlus 9 does not simply play second fiddle to the more expensive Pro OnePlus device. As a consequence of its price, the OnePlus 9 will also face far greater competition than the previous generation non-pro OnePlus phones.

The OnePlus 9 is a confusing phone, not in a way of underperforming or poor design, but more of how it is priced vis-a-vis the generation of OnePlus phones it is supposed to replace. In essence, the OnePlus 9 is the best performer in its segment but what else does the phone do particularly well, keeping its asking price in mind? Does it have great cameras? Arguably yes, since the new Sony sensors have been used but they are not a very significant leap over previous non-Pro OnePlus cameras. I can definitely see merit with the 50MP ultra-wide sensor which is a huge improvement over the 8T’s 16MP sensor. Battery capacity remains the same and even the charging speeds are identical to last year’s OnePlus 8T.

The above samples and commentary should make it clear that OnePlus has indeed made noticeable changes to their camera processing, a very welcome change given their previous phones’ reception. Indeed, it even seems that the infamous “indecisive color temperature” issue that I found in every OnePlus device dating back to the OnePlus 6 is finally gone, as this is the first time that I was unable to reproduce it on a review unit. These and other fixes, as well as the change in color science, made it so that this is by far the most refreshing OnePlus camera I’ve ever used.

If the OnePlus 9 really ends up costing as low as $699, it sounds that it might be a killer deal. The flagship price point of yesteryear, but the flagship specs of today? Yes, please. The only place where it might lag behind the OnePlus 9 Pro, it seems, is the camera department. But if the OnePlus 9 camera is as adequate as the OnePlus 8’s — that may be an easy pill to swallow.

Qualcomm Adreno 660:
