Le RedMagic 8 Pro arbore une esthétique plutôt flatteuse et moderne, tout en restant dans la sobriété et l’élégance. Il est intéressant de savoir que l’appareil est disponible en deux finitions, avec des caractéristiques largement suffisantes aussi bien pour un gamer modéré comme un gamer intense. En outre, le double système de refroidissement du RedMagic 8 Pro est vraiment l’idée de génie de ce smartphone. Pour un appareil qui doit être utilisé de manière intense, il fallait y penser, surtout que Nubia combine un ventilateur surpuissant à un liquide de refroidissement. Avec ses 6,8 pouces, l’écran du RedMagic 8 Pro est suffisamment grand pour offrir un bon confort d’utilisation pour le gaming. Cependant, le petit point positif de ce smartphone de jeu, c’est le fait qu’il s’agisse d’un écran intégral, également appelé « bordeless », dont la particularité est d’être totalement dépourvu de bords. Tout l’intérêt d’un écran bordeless, c’est le fait que les images occupent toute la surface jusqu’au bords, ce qui fait du RedMagic 8 Pro l’un des smartphones de gaming les plus immersifs de sa génération. Après l’écran, on reconnaît un bon smartphone de gaming grâce à ses caractéristiques techniques. Elles doivent permettre à l’appareil d’exécuter n’importe quel programme de jeu, sans ramer. Avec le RedMagic 8 Pro, on a plutôt été bien servi, avec le Red Core 2, la Technologie Magic GPU, le Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 ainsi que le Dual-Core Ice Dock disponible en option. Avec la mémoire RAM et la mémoire interne, il y a largement de quoi installer les meilleurs jeux mobiles, même les plus volumineux. Adieu les bugs de lancement ou de traduction.

Le RedMagic 8 Pro est un très bon smartphone haut de gamme. Pour un prix franchement très correct, il réussit la prouesse de se hisser parmi les meilleurs smartphones du marché en termes de performances. En effet, son SoC ultra-puissant ainsi que son bel écran en font des atouts majeurs pour un smartphone gaming réussi. Le ventilateur est toujours de la partie, permettant d’apporter un brin de fraicheur à l’appareil. Pour le reste, la caméra frontale est excellemment bien cachée, ce qui est une réussite incontestablement, elle est à peine visible sous l’écran. L’appareil photo globalement n’est pas mauvais et le smartphone profite de quasi toutes les dernières technologies en termes de Wi-Fi, 5G, … J’apprécie également de manière excessive le format plus carré de l’appareil, qui rompt totalement avec la mode actuelle. Le Nubia RedMagic 8 Pro est un excellent smartphone. Quiconque a besoin de performances sur son appareil et d'un bel écran, extra-large, de qualité et fluide, peut se tourner vers cet appareil. Pour le prix en plus, je doute qu'il soit aisé de trouver mieux ailleurs, surtout avec un Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, de l'UFS 4 et autant de RAM.

Terminons en évoquant la qualité du bloc caméra. Le module principal (grand-angle) de 50 Mpix se montre tout à fait capable de prendre des clichés de qualité dans de bonnes conditions lumineuses. Le mode portrait est par ailleurs efficace pour détourer les sujets. Cela se complique en revanche pour les photos nocturnes dont la qualité baisse rapidement. Les modules ultra-grand-angle, macro et selfie ne nous ont pas convaincus. Ils sont clairement les parents pauvres de cette configuration photo. Le RedMagic 8 Pro est donc un excellent smartphone pour jouer sur mobile. Sa puce Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, son système de refroidissement, ses gâchettes sensitives et ses fonctionnalités logicielles tournées vers le gaming en font une référence en la matière. Le smartphone fait cependant des concessions évidentes dans d’autres domaines, comme l’affichage ou la photo, afin d’offrir le meilleur rapport performances/prix possible.

Le Red Magic 8 Pro corrige les principaux défauts de son prédécesseur tout en apportant une puissance de calcul encore plus importante. Il arbore un écran de très haute qualité, parfaitement rectangulaire, sans aucune gêne visuelle, la caméra à selfie étant sous l’écran, très grand, très réactif et plus lumineux qu’auparavant avec des bords extrêmement fins. Dommage qu’il ne puisse pas faire varier sa fréquence dynamiquement. L’autonomie est aussi en amélioration, et ce, de manière significative pour une charge toujours aussi rapide. La qualité des photos est aussi meilleure ici. Nous avons trouvé que son design était particulièrement réussi, le mobile se différenciant ainsi des autres, la version transparente étant plus excitante que la finition mate. Le seul reproche qu’on pourrait lui faire, c’est son interface encore partiellement traduite, gâchant un peu l’expérience ludique de cet appareil qui présente beaucoup d’avantages dont celui, non négligeable, de rester abordable malgré toutes les avancées technologiques proposées. La version 16+512 Go équivalente au ROG Phone 6D Ultimate est presque deux fois moins chère (hors promotions).

Quatre mois encore, c’est ce qu’il a fallu à Nubia pour passer à la nouvelle gamme avec le tout nouveau SoC de Qualcomm, le Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Mais mis à côté d’une simple mise à jour des composants pour être « le premier » sur le marché, Nubia n’a pas fait les choses à moitié et propose même un tout nouveau design des plus réussis avec un écran intégral impressionnant, de part la caméra sous l’écran mais également au niveaux des bords qui sont quasi inexistants. Même au niveau de la photo, c’est mieux. Les années précédentes, le design « gaming cheap » collaient encore à la peau des RedMagic, ce n’est plus le cas cette année et ce n’est pas plus mal. En plus de cela, on se retrouve avec les meilleures performances sur Android à ce jour, que peut-on demander de plus ? Bah un prix compétitif et c’est aussi le cas. On ne pensait pas commencer l’année comme cela mais force est de constater que l’année 2023 va être très intéressante. Bref, tout ça pour dire que le RedMagic 8 Pro est un excellent de smartphone gaming et un très bon smartphone au quotidien. On apprécie toujours les gâchettes sensitives qui ajoutent vraiment de la jouabilité aux jeux mobiles, tout comme le mode Jeu pour avoir diverses options supplémentaires. Avec de telles performances, le RedMagic 8 Pro est en plus un excellent rapport qualité-prix.

You get top-of-the-line hardware, an impressive frame, and an improved software experience. The RedMagic 8S Pro is easily the best gaming phone the company has built yet, and it delivers consistent performance, whether you’re gaming or using your phone for less intense tasks. It also nails the battery life aspect, delivering all-day battery from a massive 6,000mAh cell alongside impressive charging speeds. It leaves very little to be desired, especially at the relatively low price. It comes in at £579/$649 for the 12GB/256GB Midnight version, which is stellar value for money. While the Platinum and Aurora colours cost more, they’re just cosmetic upgrades, making the base version an absolute steal for the price. The only two big issues RedMagic has left to solve are dust ingress issues and sometimes shoddy software. The front camera could also use some work, but I believe it’s an acceptable sacrifice in exchange for a seamless screen.

If you buy the RedMagic 8 Pro to use as a phone, you will need to make adjustments to its settings in order to turn off or remove junk, and the less you use the front-facing camera the better. Because of these software issues and the short support commitment, I generally recommend the $1,000 Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate instead, even with its higher price. Its Android UI has a much lighter touch than what RedMagic provides, its gaming modes are stacked with options, it has comparable specs, photography is better and the phone offers a longer support cycle.

The Nubia RedMagic 8 Pro’s excellent global battery score places the device among the Top 10 in our database and in the top spot for its segment. The device outperformed its predecessor, the Nubia RedMagic 7 Pro, because of better autonomy and efficiency, thanks mainly to a larger battery. The Nubia RedMagic 8 Pro’s autonomy lasted 2.5 days in our tests when used moderately. It had an especially good performance when in idle with screen on, which provided excellent autonomy in most test cases, particularly when gaming or streaming videos. On-the-go autonomy was also very good when using the camera or the navigation, two use cases that usually demand a lot of power. Equipped with a 65W charger, the device’s charging experience was excellent. Charging the battery from empty to full took less than 47 minutes, and a quick 5-minute charge provided more than 7 hours of autonomy. The 65W charger’s use of a new charging protocol that slows down the time to fully replenish the 6000 mAh battery should help preserve the life and performance of the device’s battery. Adapter efficiency was the best we ever measured, and the overall charge efficiency was also outstanding. However, the residual power drain of the charger was a bit high and above the average of our database. Finally, the discharge currents were low when streaming video or idling with screen on, meaning that the device was optimized for these test cases. In contrast, the discharge currents were a bit high when the phone was idle with the screen off, which is the main state of devices most of the day. Compared with devices from the Premium segment ($600-$799), the Nubia RedMagic 8 Pro ranked in the first place of our database, achieving the best autonomy score for this segment. The charging experience was also excellent, but the efficiency score was only average compared with device from the same price range.

For its price, the Redmagic 8 Pro offers unbeatable gaming performance. The Matte version, which starts at $649, is a phenomenal price for what you receive, but this low price comes with caveats. Despite its shortcomings, the Redmagic 8 Pro is easily one of the best gaming phones to date, and $649 is an excellent price for it.

Alas, a gaming phone can’t quite compare to the photography prowess of flagship models, with the camera on the Redmagic Pro 8 struggling to retain sharpness at 0.5x zoom and anything above 1x zoom. That shouldn’t be a deal breaker for gaming enthusiasts, though, as there are other perks to look forward to, such as a multi-dimensional cooling system, customisation for the air triggers, and an upgraded 6,000mAh battery with 65W super fast charging.

The RedMagic 8 Pro is an excellent gaming phone, and if you're looking for the ultimate in performance, this is currently the top dog. The cooling solution works well and the software adds some useful and novel touches to the gaming experience. We like the new shape, too, the sharper edges make the large uninterrupted display look more impressive than ever. This luxurious display comes at the cost of a decent selfie shooter, though, and we'd prefer a traditional camera in a small bezel, rather than an under-display camera that offers such poor results. The software, in its current state, is too buggy for our liking. Though, as we mentioned, we're sure this will improve dramatically as the updates start to roll out. You may wish to wait for bugs to be ironed out before taking the plunge. As usual, the RedMagic 8 Pro is all about performance, and on that front, it leaves little to be desired.

There is a lot to like about the nubia Red Magic 8 Pro. It offers the latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset alongside fast UFS 4.0 storage, which translates to an amazingly smooth experience no matter what you task the phone with. Of course, gaming is the bread and butter of the Red Magic line, and the Red Magic 8 Pro excels at it like few others. Not only does it have the raw power to chew through even the heaviest modern titles, but nubia's extra Game Space software layer has gotten better than ever. We found ourselves particularly impressed with how well the Red Magic 8 Pro handles gaming on an external monitor via a display connection or through the excellent Windows game streaming software, both wired and wireless. If excellence in gaming is all you are after, then we have no issue wholeheartedly recommending the Red Magic 8 Pro. However, as a complete all-around package, it still has some rough edges that are hard to ignore. For instance, despite performing quite admirably, its display is not really on par with the industry's current high-end panels. And while we can live perfectly fine with a 120Hz refresh rate in practice, the lack of things like HDR video support and LTPO are a bit tougher to swallow. Sure, both are "nice to haves" rather than truly essential, but it's these kinds of things that ultimately add up to a great overall smartphone experience. The same goes for the camera. We definitely appreciate the upgrades to the main snapper. Those are evident. But the rest of the camera experience on the Red Magic 8 Pro tends to be lackluster and lacking in both features and performance. And last but definitely not least, as smooth and feature-rich as it is, Redmagic OS is still a half-translated mess more often than not. Even after the latest Redmagic OS 6 update running on the Red Magic 8 Pro, the state in which a lot of text, menus and options appear in the UI is very poor. Nubia has had plenty of time to address this issue, as we've reported on it for years now, but obviously, the company is not interested in perfecting that aspect for its Western audience. All of this ultimately makes the Red Magic 8 Pro an amazing Android gaming device, and a somewhat compromised Android smartphone.
