The Nubia Flip is, frankly speaking, a budget smartphone with a folding form factor, with the latter contributing the most to justify its price tag. It has a weak processor which can’t even perform everyday tasks smoothly and consistently, a below-average battery life, questionable long-term durability due to its poor build quality, and an unusable camera. Yes, the flipping is fun and other clamshell foldables cost a massive premium, but that alone is not nearly enough to make up for it being a generally bad phone. My suggestion? Get a regular, non-flip phone in this price range, which will serve you much better.

The Nubia Flip 5G is surprisingly robust, considering how much cheaper it is than alternative flip phones. Despite being Nubia's first foldable, its hinge feels relatively sturdy, its cover screen is simple but effective, and day-to-day it doesn't feel like too much of a compromise. Held back by its single camera, modest internals, a lack of wireless charging and limited software support, while it's far from perfect the Nubia Flip 5G is still the only current-gen flip phone at this lower price point worth considering.

Unfortunately, there are some significant compromises to reach that $499 price tag. The lack of ultra-thin glass and an IP rating makes us seriously wonder about long-term durability. The small cover display failed to meet my low expectations for functionality too, while the lack of an ultrawide camera is disappointing. nubia isn’t offering a specific software update policy, either, which is doubly disappointing seeing that Android 13 is used here. Finally, you lose out on network support in the US, too, supporting most of the sub-6GHz 5G bands on AT&T and Verizon but only supporting one T-Mobile 5G band. The phone also lacks mmWave support. The nubia Flip 5G is worth considering if you absolutely must have a brand-new foldable on a budget.

The Nubia Flip 5G has left us rather divided. On one hand, it’s incredible to see a folding smartphone offered at this incredibly affordable price. However, the brand kept the features and prowess so lean, to a point that the Nubia Flip 5G feels more like a regular phone that can fold in half. It's a flip phone, no doubt, but it lacks crucial, high-performing features to let the user fully take advantage of the external screen. Sure, there are some widgets for the external screen, but this level of polish and functionality feels naked next to rivals who have been aggressively exploring use cases for flip phones. If the Nubia Flip 5G had come out before 2021, it might be a little easier to accept the experience. The likes of the OPPO Find N3 Flip and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 available today make the Nubia Flip 5G feel a little primitive in comparison.

The Nubia Flip 5G is a clamshell foldable with a mid-range starting price, making it a tempting choice for anyone interested in the form factor who baulks at the idea of spending £700 or even upward of £1000 on their next phone upgrade. You have to expect some compromises for the £499 starting price. The chipset is two years old and the second camera is a measly 2-megapixel sensor. There’s also no telephoto sensor so don’t expect to get close to your subject without the image quality suffering. On top of this, the phone does not include an IP rating or support for wireless charging. However, all this isn’t to say the phone won’t stand up well to everyday use and basic gaming.

This recommendation comes with the caveat that you are a T-Mobile user. With that in mind, I wholeheartedly recommend the Nubia Flip 5G for those looking to spice up their Android lifestyle. I've had more fun using and theming the Flip 5G than I have in ages, calling back to my rooting and romming days. The phone feels fresh while pulling from years of Android zaniness. Plus, the sucker folds in half, and it only costs $500. It's a marvel folding phones have come this far, and I'm absolutely here for it. That's not to say you won't be better served picking up a Pixel 8a, especially if you demand great cameras. While the Nubia Flip 5G is no slouch when it comes to photos, you'll be hard-pressed to beat what Google is putting up at the exact same price point. But if photos aren't a primary concern, and long-term support doesn't even register because you'll inevitably be using a new phone next year, the Flip 5G is quite impressive.

The benefit of flip phones is that they are much more flexible when it comes to price. Where the larger, tablet-like foldable phones can easily cost as much as $1700, flagship flip phones are often priced around $999 but can go even lower. The Nubia Flip 5G is a good example of a mid-range foldable phone, hitting the same price point that you would see from other non-folding and similarly specced devices. At a starting price of $499, it's cheaper than the Motorola Razr 2023 was at launch, although that phone is positioned a bit higher with some flagship specs thrown in. The Nubia, on the other hand, is content to offer several compromises to get down to a price that many people might be willing to shell out for a foldable phone, even as a first foray into the form factor.

Selling a folding phone for £499/£499 is a huge milestone for Nubia. This price of the Flip 5G is so much more accessible than many other rivals, and it’s not just a copycat of other clamshell builds, with its signature circular outer display and bold colourways. As with all mid-range phones, be prepared to make sacrifices – the camera is a mixed bag, and the software is not as clean as what you’ll find on Samsung and Motorola models. It’s also unclear how long it will be supported for. Nonetheless, if folding tech on a budget is what you’re after, then this is the smartphone for you.

The Nubia Flip 5G succeeds in its mission to be a cheaper foldable than you've ever seen before. But beyond the price tag, there's not much else that'll blow your mind with this phone. If you've been curious about a foldable phone, but reluctant to spend close to $1,000 on one, this could be the device you're looking for, even if saving up for a Motorola Razr or Razr Plus, or a Galaxy Z Flip 5 would deliver a more polished experience. The anticipated Galaxy Z Flip 6 could shake things up, but assuming Samsung’s phone stays the same price as the Z Flip 5, the Nubia still offers quite a bargain for a foldable phone, in exchange for performance, photography acumen and some foldable-specific features. For the price, you may also want to consider if you'd be better off with a Pixel 7a or Galaxy A55, even though those phones aren’t foldable. Still, for all its flaws and limitations, I've had great fun testing the Nubia Flip 5G, and that makes up for a lot.

The ZTE Nubia Flip has enough merits to stand on its own. It’s a well-designed phone with all the right specs at the right places to make the user experience decently good. There are quality components in every area of the smartphone, whether that’s the design, display, performance, 5G camera, or even the battery. There are indeed foldable smartphones with far better specs than this one, but they also cost a whole lot more. They were released at price points that are simply out of the range of mainstream users. That’s exactly what ZTE plans to change with this smartphone. So, they price the smartphone under $500, so it becomes affordable for most people.

That’s about all the information we have to go on right now. The launch is expected to be in March, and pricing will apparently start from $599 (there’s no UK release confirmed, so no UK prices as of yet). There were two colour variations at the hands-on event – a plain black model and the flashier gold number photographed here – so we can expect both of them to be available when the phone eventually hits shelves. Working with the assumption that the Nubia Flip 5G will be coming to the UK, there’s a lot here that could be a problem for the Razr brand: I like the cover display better, the hardware is comparable and depending on how those exchange rates work out, it could well be a fair bit cheaper, too. Brand recognition will definitely work against it, but at a time of financial crunch where we all want to pay as little as possible, a budget alternative to the big flip phone brands could end up being a dark horse in the foldable race.

The ZTE Nubia Flip 5G may not be the sleekest or best-looking foldable around, but it does look like it’ll close the performance gap with regular candybar smartphones more than any other clamshell-style foldable has so far. It’s hefty and thick, but there’s potential here, and I can’t wait to spend more time with the phone in the near future.
