Critiques pour le/la Nokia Lumia 830
Adieu, Nokia.

If you’re shopping for a new smartphone, all these ups and downs beget some major questions. Does the 830’s low(ish) cost justify its many compromises? How many of its shortcomings actually impair the user experience? Should you consider jumping to the 830 from another smartphone? Wouldn’t it be better just to spring for the 930 instead? What would possess a company to put a USB charging port at the top of a phone? These questions and more (mostly) answered below, in our Lumia 830 review video!

While a very decent Windows Phone device, the Nokia Lumia 830 has a steep hill to climb against midrange Androids with its current price bordering on 300 USD or EUR. Windows Phone 8.1 is now a better mobile OS, and the Lumia 830 is promised for a Windows 10 update, too. We certainly can't complain about the out-of-the-box software that comes with the handset, but the ecosystem still lacks in terms of app count, so if you are coming from an Android handset, or an iPhone, some applications you know and love might not be there.

Overall then the Lumia 830 offers decent value for money at a decent price. It isn't the best phone we have tested, but it is far from the worst. (See also: 16 Best Windows Phones of 2014/2015 UK.)

There's nothing shockingly wrong with the Lumia 830, but it does feel like a slight opportunity lost. It is a mediocre performer, with a not-great camera. But it is well priced, nicely built and stylish. Better value can be found by dropping down to the Lumia 630, but if you want a 5in Windows phone this is a decent option.

Nokia's parting gift, the Lumia 830 offers a sturdy and good looking design, a noteworthy display, a quality camera and a stable and smooth OS. WP lovers won't be disappointed, but for Rs. 26,000, there are much more powerful devices out there.

The Lumia experience has continued to improve but it still hasn't made the breakthrough it needs. Indeed Microsoft may be wondering what it has to do to make that breakthrough - in which case an obvious flagship and an absolute focus on app store quality are key. As Microsoft says goodbye to the Nokia branding and forges ahead with Lumia, it is working from a solid base, but there's still work to do.

If you are a Windows Phone user and wish to switch to a modern, affordable flagship smartphone that does it all, you can’t go too wrong with the Nokia Lumia 830. It has a great display, decent battery life and fantastic camera. The 10MP PureView camera comes with a great set of manual controls and editing features, which makes it a perfect choice for photo enthusiasts looking for a mid-range smartphone. It’s definitely not the fastest phone in its league, but it works well for moderate uses.

It is also let down heavily by a poor design and equally poor operating system, with neither living up the quality of the Android powered HTC One Mini 2 and Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini. With the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact also coming in at a similar price bracket, I really struggle to see how the Lumia 830 will compete.

Nokia and Microsoft Devices — whatever it’s now called — can sure make things a little difficult to work out. With its current Lumia line-up, you can either go with the 930 which is a great phone with an ordinary battery life and no expandable storage, or you can pick the 830 — this phone — which is an ordinary phone with great battery life and storage that can be expanded.

But back to the review at hand. Yes, the Nokia Lumia 830 is the affordable flagship Microsoft is pitching it as. It's got top-notch specs in every key aspect of the phone and comes with a competitive mid-range price. We get a solid build with metal frame plus a curved protective screen glass and a matte finish on the back. There is the 5" IPS display of excellent quality, enhanced with ClearBlack tech as well. The Snapdragon 400 chipset runs buttery smooth on that 720p resolution, too. And, of course, let's not forget the 10MP PureView camera with ZEISS optics and optical image stabilization.

As I’ve noted elsewhere, I usually carry two phones: a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and one of several Windows Phones, swapping SIMs back and forth as needed. The Android ecosystem seems obsessed with specs, dissecting screen size, display resolution, memory, and CPU speeds to determine the best solution. Move to a Windows Phone, though, and those distinctions just don't seem that relevant. As the benchmarks showed, the Lumia 830 is a substantial step down on paper. But in real-world testing, the differences weren't that noticeable.

The Lumia 830 is the most stylish handset in its class. Made of premium materials, this phone is build to last. For Rs 26,300, it offers a stunning camera and fluid smartphone experience. On the other hand, the 830 is not for the specs junkies. This phone won't impress you with the processor score or ppi number, but will win you over with its unique features and real life usefulness (if given a chance).

In the end, the Lumia 830 is clearly a "bridge" device. It's got the high-end looks and capable camera of flagship-level phones, along with the performance and display resolution of mid-range and budget models. Whether Microsoft Mobile made the right trade-offs really depends on what you want out of your smartphone.

Featuring Microsoft's enterprise-friendly Windows Phone 8.1 operating system, quad-core processor, decent screen and excellent camera, the Lumia 830 is an excellent phone. Add to this its moderate £320 price tag and we can definitely see the Lumia 830 appealing to business buyers looking for an affordable option.

The “flagship” simply invites us to look for a gimmick that isn’t there. Then again, a Windows flagship isn’t really there until Microsoft cranks out its next high-end imaging marvel, or HTC takes its One M8 for Windows (Verizon-only for now) worldwide.

The Nokia Lumia 830 has the ‘good results most of the time’ thing down, and this adds to the ease of use supplied by the slim, great-feeling body. However, it doesn’t have quite as capacious a battery as some rival phones.

The Lumia 830 is a camera lover's dream smartphone. We would even go as far as to say that it negates the need to invest in a digital camera. Calling this smartphone an 'affordable flagship' might actually be okay considering its camera performance and price of Rs. 28,799. For those who argue that the Moto G (Gen 2) [Review | Pictures] has similar specs and is priced much lower than this phone should understand that the Lumia 830's camera performance is miles ahead and its build quality simply cannot be matched by Motorola's budget champion. If you are someone who is platform agnostic then the newly launched Moto X (Gen 2) [Review | Pictures] might be considered an alternative.

The Microsoft Nokia Lumia 830 is a very pretty handset. The build can't be faulted for its premium quality and while the processor and camera might lack a little power for some, that's why the price is where it is positioned. That's the Lumia 830's issue really: there are so many arguments to spend the extra £100 and grab the Lumia 930 instead. As Nokia's swan song the Lumia 830 is a solid performance but one without crescendo.

It all comes down to the camera, really. If you value the superior low-light performance the optical image stabilization affords, it’s a very good option. Few phones can match it at this price in that particular department, and as we saw it trades blows with the iPhone 6 Plus here, too. It’s stylish, good value and takes great photos in low light, but the Lumia 830 up against some stiff competition. You won’t find a better low light camera at this price, but you will find better all-round phones.

Overall, the Nokia Lumia 830 is a huge improvement over its predecessor, with spec bumps in almost every area possible. It's speedier, can capture better photographs, offers a much better and bigger screen and has a significantly more attractive design, in addition to the extra storage space and newer software. We'd still recommend checking out other mid-range smartphones before making your purchasing decision, though, as the Lumia 830 has some solid rivals from competing companies.

The Nokia Lumia 830 is caught between a rock and a hard place. At around £320 unlocked, it’s pricier than both the new Moto G and the Google Nexus 5, with a similar sized screen to both and fewer apps. Then on the other side, you've also got the choice of more powerful flagship Windows Phones and Android blowers, not to mention the iPhone 6 for not that much more. Its major saving grace is the excellent camera strapped in, but if that's not a concern to you, you can get a whole lot more for less on Android, and you won't be stuck with Windows Phone's lack of apps.

Nokia’s Lumia 830 may be a stripped-back version of the flagship Lumia 930 smartphone, but the sacrifices aren’t all that great considering the cost savings. Sure, there’s no 1080p screen, but the 720p display is perfectly sharp and beautifully vibrant still. Yes, the 20-megapixel camera has been reduced to a 10-megapixel snapper, but it’s still just as dependable for your everyday shots. And the basic Snapdragon 400 processor copes well with everything you throw its way, for now at least.

Still, from what we've seen, the Lumia 830 is a strong performer and one that will only help bring new customers to the platform, as long as they aren't swayed by the dozens of other Lumia devices already available.
