Since the brand was taken over by HMD Global, Nokia has had its hands full. In fact, in order to stand out, the brand has been releasing smartphones with a focus on providing end users with a clean, stock Android experience. However, the market for budget smartphones has evolved over time, and Nokia has had to work double-time to stay ahead of the competition. On that note, Nokia recently released the Nokia 5.4 in India for Rs 13,999, and in this review, we’ll see if the smartphone is worth your money.

The Nokia 5.4 performs well, is durable, and has notably good audio for a budget phone, but the lackluster cameras, average battery life, and lack of 5G are hard to swallow at $250. Our Editors’ Choice, the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G, may cost a little more than the 5.4, but that extra $30 buys a bright and vivid display, better cameras, a battery that will definitely get you through the day, and 5G future-proofed with C-band compatibility. If you really need to stay under the $250 mark, the capable OnePlus Nord N200 5G ($239.99) is another 5G phone that's well worth considering for its large 90Hz display, speedy connectivity, and long-lived battery. If you’re not ready to jump on the 5G bandwagon just yet, the OnePlus Nord N100 is a better-value 4G phone. It offers similar performance, sports an incredible 90Hz display, and costs $70 less than the 5.4. With such excellent budget phones on the market, HMD's Nokia line is going to have to try much harder to stay competitive.

OK, but the display was never going to get better on its own (my mind was just in a hurry to suppress that memory as fast as it could). What about places where the Nokia 5.4 at least had the potential for growth? Software updates? Well, at least the phone finally just got its June update, but for several months there we were stuck on March security patches. More than that, we're still on Android 10. But now we're actually starting to see discounts bring the handset down to the $200 level (and even below) — and down here the phone's beginning to feel a little tempting. Nokia itself has the 5.4 for a cool $200, and better deals are popping up all the time — just a few weeks ago, B&H dropped its price down to $180. While I still have my issues here, that kind of pricing is finally starting to make the Nokia 5.4 worth considering.

t’s no surprise that my closing thoughts aren’t exactly positive. The Nokia 5.4 is a decent enough budget phone, but it doesn’t really do anything especially interesting, and the Redmi Note 9T is simply better value according to every single metric. The Nokia 5.4’s price is low enough that a lot of these issues can be excused slightly, but if there’s a much better phone for the same amount of money, you ought to be buying that one instead. You might want to give the Nokia 5.4 a miss.

Priced at £130, the Nokia 5.3 was a bargain bucket device that punched well above its weight and made a lasting impression as a result. Standards have since risen across the board though, and we can see phones around the £250 mark offering more robust hardware and 5G support. This means, sadly, that while the Nokia 5.4 has made meaningful strides upon its predecessor, it’s taken a step back compared to the rest of the industry. Its display and camera offer only marginal improvements, while performance and battery life are weaker than last year’s model. We should stress, the Nokia 5.4 is among the best you can get at this price, and you can hardly do better for £150. The price gap between this and the next best thing, however, isn’t as wide as it once was. Push your budget that little bit further, and you suddenly open yourself up to a significant hardware upgrade, with 5G connectivity the cherry on top.

This phone is utterly not for someone who prefers compact, pocket-friendly devices, prioritizes media playback, and wants a really flexible camera package. Like a distressing number of other affordably-priced phones, it feels like the Nokia 5.4 was built around the idea of a physically large screen, all other considerations be damned. If your interests in a phone are also sufficiently myopic, the Nokia 5.4 might be a good fit. The battery life is nice, SIM and expansion options are good to see, and the software won't make you angry. For $250, maybe that's not a bad package.

With excellent battery life, a stock Android experience with great software support thanks to Android One, capable cameras, and a bright if slightly lo-res display, the Nokia 5.4 is worth it, especially if you can pick it up during a sale in the US market where it regularly drops to $199. Competing handsets from Realme and Xiaomi muddy the waters somewhat in the UK market, but neither offer the same support in terms of updates or security patches.

Overall the 5.4 is a good mid-range phone. It takes decent pictures, has a reasonable amount of storage space, has a great screen, and a pleasing aesthetic. The phone is easy to set up, use and fits comfortably in hand.

The Nokia 5.4 provides an all-round competent budget phone experience, and we’ll always appreciate Nokia’s pure approach to Android. But that no longer feels like enough in today’s competitive budget market, where one or two stand-out features aren’t uncommon. This is a phone that completely underwhelms with its drab screen and sluggish performance, while an improved camera can still only manage acceptable wide shots in good lighting. It isn’t a bad phone by any means, but the Nokia 5.4 simply fails to shine with any of the basics.

The Nokia 5.4, overall, is a bit of a swing and a miss compared to its predecessor, let alone the budget market, with the likes of the Realme 7 and Xiaomi Redmi 9 offering a similar level performance with much better displays and, arguably, a better overall look and feel too.

The Nokia 5.4 is a good competitor in its segment. Even though it falls short on some aspects such as the display, it still performs nicely for a phone at this price.

The Nokia 5.4 is the brand’s latest budget contender. Though it has a sturdy, attractive design, its poor cameras, inconsistent performance, underwhelming screen, and lack of personality mean it is poor value compared to its closest rivals at the price point.

The Nokia 5.4 would have been a good smartphone in the sub-Rs 10,000 price segment. At Rs 13,999 for the base model, the Nokia 5.4 is not just expensive but lacks the zing due to its mediocre cameras and sub-par performance. Consider the Nokia 5.4 for its striking design and clutter-free stock Android user interface. Beyond these, there is not much to like about in the Nokia 5.4.

Coming less than a year after its predecessor, the Nokia 5.4 is a decidedly iterative update to the 5.3. However, it boasts a much-improved camera to go along with a decent display, excellent battery life, and top-notch software and update schedule. If you can't afford phones that cost $300 or more, you can't really do much better than this.

So, does the Nokia 5.4 make for a good buy, given its starting price of Rs 13,999? To answer that, allow me to quickly recap the smartphone’s hits and misses and here, the device offers reasonably good performance, a day’s worth of battery backup and a capable 48MP sensor. Unfortunately, the smartphone still boots Android 10, doesn’t offer a robust chassis and ships with an HD+ screen. What’s more, the device is a let down in the connectivity department too, as it doesn’t support 5G, or 5GHz Wi-Fi networks. Consequently, unless you’re an ardent Nokia fan and want a stock Android phone, I would suggest you look elsewhere. The Nokia 5.4 is a decent smartphone but as things stand, you can get a much better bang for your buck by opting for devices like the POCO M3 (review)… or if you can stretch your budget a little bit, the POCO X3 (review) or the Narzo 30A (review).

Nokia 5.4 no doubt stands tall on what Nokia brand is known for. It has got solid build quality, good battery life and a clutter-free user experience. However, at the starting price of Rs 13,999, the smartphone lacks that something extra. A better processor, better display and camera could have solved Nokia’s problem. It’s something a lot of buyers may not be able to overlook.

The Nokia 5.4 could have been a solid choice in the sub-Rs. 15,000 segment, but the features and performance on offer just aren't competitive enough. The addition of H-Log video capture is unique, but the resolution and framerate restrictions might put a lot of people off. Take this feature away, and the cameras don't really have much else to stand on. Add to this the low-resolution display and the slightly sluggish performance of the 4GB variant, and you end up with a phone that's a little hard to recommend to anyone with a budget limit of Rs. 15,000.

How often do you come across a budget smartphone with stock Android inside the Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 bracket? Chances are, apart from Nokia, these would come from Motorola’s stable. Then again, there are a few customisations, and software updates aren’t Motorola’s forte. This may have been the case a few years ago, but even today, most Chinese smartphone brands go low on price and heavy on bloat. So, it’s nice to have an option for those looking for a very Pixel-like experience at a not so Pixel-like budget.

Nokia 5.4 comes as a good option for Rs 13,999 (the cost of 4GB RAM version, 6GB RAM model costs Rs 15,499). I liked the 720p display and how fast the fingerprint sensor works. The cameras also pleased me with their ability to keep the natural colours of the subject intact. The battery lasted for more than a day. And, yes, its arresting design. But there are a few areas where Nokia 5.4 could have been better.

This is a very interesting feature and not something we'd expect in phones at this price level so I'm curious to see how much of an impact it really makes when creating content. Be sure to check back for the full review of the Nokia 5.4, coming soon, in which I'll be testing the phone's performance, battery life, and cameras in much more detail.

Nokia 5.4 may impress Nokia fanboys and customers who want to buy a smartphone with stock Android and that too from non-Chinese brands. It will face a tough challenge from Poco M2, which was recently launched.

Commentaire
Qualcomm Adreno 610:
