A MacBook-level Windows laptop with commendable design, portability, attention to detail, and performance. Get it if you find the asking price acceptable and aren’t fazed by a lack of IO ports.

Microsoft has designed a very good-looking laptop. It delivers solid performance for everyday tasks, as well as great battery life, while still being slim and light. It feels extremely premium and will definitely grab eyeballs. However, the focus seems to have been a bit too narrow. The looks come at the cost of common usability issues such as only having a single USB port and not being able to upgrade or replace any parts. We think this laptop would be best suited for frequent travellers who care more about work than entertainment.

As a first stab at a proper lightweight notebook, the Surface Studio is a capable and accomplished offering. It's held back slightly by the omission of USB-C connectivity and the decision to ship it with Windows 10 S, but it's otherwise an absolutely superb device.

Microsoft has made some slightly baffling decisions with the Surface Laptop. Debuting Windows 10 S - an operating system that would be most at home on a low-budget Chromebook rival - on what is otherwise a top-notch ultrabook is an odd choice, as is spurning the incredible versatility of the USB-C standard.

Overall, the Microsoft Surface Laptop is a solid option if its build quality, industrial design, plush Alcantara keyboard and 3:2 aspect ratio display strike your fancy. Starting at $799, or roughly $1K as configured, it's a competent Windows laptop with a few caveats, but a unique, clean design signature.

Microsoft's Surface Laptop is actually a lot better than I expected it to be. Yes, the selection of ports bothers me greatly, although you won't mind if you're already invested in Surface accessories, but the Laptop is just a really pleasant device to use.

The Surface Laptop impresses on style, stuns on battery life, and sports one of the best laptop screens to date. But our quibbles (the fabric-covered keyboard, and a few other issues) overshadow it, in a field crowded with excellent premium portables.

At $1299, you can find cheaper options or ones with better specs, but none of these systems come wrapped in Alcantara fabric. Unless you’re set on Windows 10 S, HP’s 13-inch Spectre x360 represents a better value at that price—it has a convertible hinge, comes with twice the RAM and double the storage and supports Thunderbolt 3 over USB Type-C. The Surface Laptop places a large premium for design, and if you’re willing to pay to play, then Microsoft’s debut notebook will give you fast performance, long battery life and plenty of style, especially if you’re able to take advantage of Microsoft’s free upgrade path to Windows 10 Pro through the end of the year.

How that buying decision will feel two years down the line I’m not so sure about, and I do think most people are better off bypassing Windows 10 S from the get-go for the full version. Nonetheless, Microsoft has delivered just what was asked of it. The Surface Laptop is the go-to, gimmick-free notebook that puts Windows 10 front and center.

The Surface Laptop also marks the debut of Microsoft’s new Windows 10 S operating system, a more security- and performance-minded variant of Windows 10. Unfortunately, to get those features, you also have to sacrifice some of your independence when it comes to what you can put on your own computer.

The Surface Laptop isn't the most affordable laptop around but it's not outrageous either compared to rivals. Microsoft has done a great job of creating a well-made, thin and desirable laptop. We'd tweak the ports on offer and upgrade from Windows 10 S to Pro, but we can live with the niggles considering the specs and excellent battery life.

Oddly, the Surface Laptop feels like progress forward and back, all at once. Microsoft originally designed the Surface lineup to hustle its hardware partners faster into the future, implicitly stripping Apple of its design cachet and encouraging consumers to buy new PCs. Now, the Surface Laptop has stepped down a rung, challenging some of the cheaper, more mainstream product lines of its hardware partners to keep up. Laptops like HP’s latest Spectre x360 already do, but other vendors could use a push.

The Dell XPS 13 isn't as pretty, but it undercuts it and offers more ports. Meanwhile, the Huawei MateBook X is a different kind of pretty and ships with a USB dock, while also undercutting it.

On balance, I would still recommend the Dell XPS 13 at this price, the Lenovo IdeaPad 710S for under a grand, and the Acer Swift 3 for those on a budget. The Surface Laptop does have the advantage of coming with some hefty discounts if you’re a student, which are well worth looking at.

From its classy carpeted aesthetic to its new Windows 10 S operating system, there's a lot that's different about this Surface - but this is all to its credit. Want to get your work done? The Microsoft Surface Book is a really interesting laptop. It's gorgeous to look at, incredibly well built… and comes with a hampered version of Windows and all costs a fairly considerable sum of money. In that regard it's going to be mis-matched for the education sector at which it is pitched.

Overall, the Dell XPS 13 is still our top pick, because it offers more ports and starts at a lower price ($799) while offering a speedier SSD. Still, the Surface Laptop delivers, including typing comfort, performance, display quality and battery life. And if you really want a touch screen, you can get it for much less than the XPS 13 ($999 versus $1,256).

Microsoft set out to make the most refined notebook it could with the Surface Laptop, and for the most part it succeeded. It's sleek and powerful and has great battery life. It might seem like a step back for Microsoft, after trying to promote new twists on notebooks over the past few years. But it's more of a realization: There's still a huge demand for traditional laptops. And Microsoft just showed how it's done.

Fortunately, upgrading to Windows 10 Pro is quick, easy, free (for now), and doesn’t have any particular downside, so it’s something I recommend you do. (And chances are, you’d probably do it even without my recommendation.) Provided you make that upgrade, the Surface Laptop might be the new default computer I recommend, essentially taking over exactly where the MacBook Air left off.

The press are generally positive about the laptop as a whole. The Verge notes that the $1,300 model is “the new de facto Windows laptop that most people who want a Windows laptop should get.” Engadget states that while overall performance scores are solid, the Surface Laptop’s storage scores are only ~50 percent of the Surface Pro 4. Gaming performance is, as expected, very low — don’t plan on playing anything but simple, low-spec games on this system. Even so, Engadget says: “There’s still a huge demand for traditional laptops. And Microsoft just showed how it’s done.” CNET is less positive, arguing that while the Surface Laptop does nothing wrong, it also doesn’t particularly distinguish itself compared with equivalently priced devices, either.

The Surface Laptop is a beautiful thing, and works very well. I'm not sure the fabric palm rests and use of Windows 10 S are the greatest ideas, but mainly I think the pricing is just that bit too high.

In more ways than one, the Surface Laptop is the first erm… traditional laptop that Microsoft has built. And by that, I meant a screen attached firmly to a keyboard base, with neither the kickstand and detachable keyboard cover that you see on the Surface Pro 2-in–1 models, nor the funky hinge that lets you separate the screen from the GPU base like what you’ve on the Surface Book hybrid.

The time I had with Surface Laptop was rather too brief, unfortunately. I was not able to test things like the volume output from the hidden omnidirectional speakers, and the laptop’s performance. But one thing is for sure: it is definitely one of the best looking Windows laptops at the moment.
