Sur le papier, la promesse de Microsoft est belle : proposer un PC capable de se transformer en tablette ou support multimédia pour apporter un confort optimal aux créatifs. Généreux, l’américain fournit un stylet d’un grand confort et un chargeur ultra-rapide. Et si le concept séduit et que les finitions sont irréprochables, ce Surface Laptop Studio rate sa cible. En se focalisant sur le format de la machine, les ingénieurs ont oublié l’essentiel. Les créatifs ont avant tout besoin d’un outil performant (puisqu’ils font tourner des logiciels exigeants) et équipé d’un écran dernier cri (puisqu’ils travaillent souvent sur de l’image). Sur le premier point, Microsoft se plante complètement, sur le second il joue petit bras. On aurait accepté ces petites faiblesses si l’américain ne facturait pas son Surface Laptop Studio au prix fort. Il le positionne comme un appareil premium, pile en face des derniers Macbook Pro d’Apple ou Vivobook Duo d’Asus. Malheureusement, à prix équivalent, le Surface Laptop Studio ne fait pas le poids. Difficile donc de le recommander en dehors d’offres promotionnelles.

Aïe, par quel bout prendre ce Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio ? On a du mal à trouver dans cet appareil le Microsoft qui était capable grâce à son innovation de faire tourner les têtes il y a une dizaine d'années. En 2022, le Surface Laptop Studio est l'héritier d'une gamme qui a bien du mal à trouver sa place et évoluer sur un marché très dynamique. Il hérite d'une connectique limitée, comme si la conception n'avait pas imaginé le revirement d'Apple sur la question des ports et il hérite de choix technologiques datés, au niveau du processeur notamment. Un produit Surface devrait être le fleuron inégalé sur Windows, et la note reflète ici cet objectif manqué. On attend mieux d'un géant comme Microsoft en somme. Analyse de marché mise de côté, le Surface Laptop Studio nous apparait surtout comme un PC portable ratant son marché cible. La capacité de transformer le PC en tablette est intéressante pour quelques usages professionnels, mais cela se fait au prix de sérieux compromis. Avec ce PC, vous aurez un très bon écran (on adore le format), mais pas un écran aussi excellent que chez Apple ou Asus.

Le Surface Laptop Studio de Microsoft est un PC original qui n'est pas destiné à tout le monde. Son format de niche vise surtout les créateurs et professionnels qui ont besoin de travailler en mode tablette ou de montrer du contenu. Pour un usage plus généraliste, ou à l'inverse porté sur les performances pures, ce portable n'affiche pas un très bon rapport qualité/prix. Les performances du processeur ne sont en effet pas sont point fort, même si la carte graphique Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti embarquée rattrape le coup et permet d'utiliser l'accélération matérielle de certaines applications. L'écran 120 Hz délivre pour sa part une prestation haut de gamme et l'autonomie est excellente, ce qui rehausser la note finale.

It’s a mobile workstation that’s also a sketching slate and a portable home theatre. I have been using the Surface Laptop Studio for a few days, and I am in love with this device even though it is not perfect. Here is my review.

The Laptop Studio is a compelling new addition to Microsoft’s Surface range, but it doesn’t get everything right. I’m impressed by the functionality available in all three modes, but some will miss the extra flexibility afforded by the Surface Book. However, a slick design makes switching between them feel seamless. It also helps Microsoft pack in more power than the Book 3. While it was announced before 12th-gen Intel laptop chips were official, combining Tiger Lake CPUs with an RTX 3050 Ti GPU yields a nice performance boost. Other highlights include an impressive 120Hz display (with adaptive refresh rate on the way), solid battery life and a great video calling experience. However, a limited port selection and no fingerprint sensor take the shine off the experience. At these prices, these shortcomings are difficult to ignore. But let's hope more companies experiment with form factors like this in the future.

In the final analysis, unless you’re in the small group that desperately needs to work with a stylus on a daily basis, you’re probably best off giving the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio a wide berth. It simply has one too many shortcomings to be worthy of a recommendation.

Its power ceiling isn’t super-high, and unlike a Wacom Cintiq or Surface Studio 2, you can’t secure the screen at an optimal angle for stylus use without a separate laptop stand.

If the Surface Laptop Studio’s $2,899 model cost $1,899, this would be a tougher call. Its fiercest competitors retail between $1,000 to $1,900, leaving the Surface Laptop Studio stranded above the standard 2-in-1 price range. While the laptop is a bit too bulky for easy portability, it does offer better performance than many Windows 2-in-1s and meets the needs of stylus users. However, we simply can’t recommend it when you can get a similar experience from other significantly cheaper options.

There are a number of similar laptops available, from the tablet Windows Surface Pro 8 to the standard laptop-style Dell XPS 13. The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 is cheaper (although you do have to buy the keyboard and pen separately) and uses a similar processor. It also offers Thunderbolt 4 ports. The clip-on keyboard is much less comfortable to use than the one built into the Surface Laptop Studio, though and you really can’t use it on your lap. The Dell XPS 13 9310 is a more standard laptop than the Surface Laptop Studio and includes a more attractive OLED screen (a 2-in-1 version is also available) . The 13-inch screen on the XPS is smaller than the Surface Laptop Studio, though, and that can be important for those who want to use the touch screen and pen with apps like Photoshop and Illustrator that need lots of screen real estate.
