Microsoft's Surface Laptop Studio 2 improves upon the original without sacrificing the unique versatility of its sliding hinged display. This Windows 11 2-in-1 can't outperform Apple's MacBooks, but it's beefy enough to function as a gaming laptop or portable video editing machine. Now if only Microsoft would throw the Surface Slim Pen 2 stylus in for free.

Overall, there’s no denying that the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 Studio is a versatile, powerful, and high-performing device from which creative professionals will benefit, for sure. However, in my opinion, its substantial weight and relatively weak battery performance, which limit its portability and make it more suitable for stationary use rather than on the go, are rather hard to justify, given its hefty price tag that starts at RM12,199. So do take these points into consideration when you’re in the market for a new laptop.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 looks conventional on the surface but is a bit of a one-off. Or at least a two-off, considering how similar it is to the original Surface Laptop Studio. Touchscreen and stylus support, and the highly unusual hybrid hinge, mark it out as an obvious pick for creatives. But the design doesn’t actually explore these avenues quite as well as the original Surface Studio 2+ all-in-one PC from 2022 (outdated) or the Acer ConceptD (also outdated). However, cost is the main potential stumbling block here. Lovely at it is, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is very expensive for a laptop not quite at the bleeding edge of performance in terms of display colour/contrast or raw computing power. But for the niche market it appeals to, it's undeniably a bloomin’ lovely laptop that's unlike anything else out there.

If you're hunting for a 2-in-1 laptop with stellar performance, then look no further. The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 is about as good as they get. Whatever you plan to use your next PC for, be that hobbyist photography or professional creative work, this laptop has the speed to cope. It’s a workhorse with a touchscreen, although it’s a shame that a stylus doesn’t come bundled with the device. While it may deliver on power, it won't be for everyone. For some, the level of performance will be overkill. You could save a fair amount of money going for something more modest. It is also quite bulky. That's something to consider if you intend to regularly move your laptop between your home and work. If so, you might be better off considering something a little more lightweight.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio is a MacBook Pro competitor with a twist. It doesn’t keep up with its Apple rival or comparative Windows laptops in terms of raw power but mostly makes up for it with a classy and interesting design alongside strong battery life. The price of admission is high though.

The second iteration of the Surface Laptop Studio addresses most of our issues with the first model. The screen hinge feels – and sounds – more robust, while the addition of a USB-A port and memory card slot is welcome. The big performance boost is the main improvement, though, and gives the Surface Studio 2 a serious fillip for both work and play. Ultimately, however, it’s the price that proves the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2’s undoing. It’s more expensive than the M3 MacBook Pro for similar configurations and you don’t get a free stylus in the box, either. That leaves the hinging touch display as the main attraction and you’ll have to want it a whole lot if you’re willing to pay this much of a premium for it.

The Surface Studio 2 successfully combines flexibility with a high-end design to offer a truly versatile professional computing experience. Its vivid display, quality touchpad and keyboard, and impressive performance and battery life make it a capable device when solely being used in its traditional clamshell form; but Microsoft's execution on the flexible design of the Studio 2 and its seamless stylus integration set it apart from other premium devices. Despite this, the Studio 2 is a difficult device to recommend for enterprises where its various orientations provide limited functionality in business settings for the premium they add to the price. The most basic unit with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD comes in at $2,099.99, whereas the unit we tested would set you back an eye-watering $4,499.99. Not only this, the Slim Pen 2 which is vital to getting the most out of the device's semi-detachable display, is sold separately for $103.99.

With all of that said, I remain unconvinced by the Surface Laptop Studio 2. As with the original SLS, I think there’s niche appeal to this particular laptop, but beyond that niche, it’s tough to recommend. For almost every use case, I can think of a better PC, a more affordable laptop, or both. That said, few PCs will match the SLS2’s excellent build quality or offer as unique a hinge mechanism for contorting the display into a tablet mode. I do think the SLS2 is worth a premium for those features, but not as much as it currently costs (and again, only for users in the niche audience the SLS2 aims for). In Canada, the SLS2 starts at $2,699.99. The SLS2 model I tested costs $4,539.99. You can purchase the SLS2 through Microsoft or other retailers, like Best Buy.

Microsoft’s reimagined tilting screen design is one of the better laptop tech innovations we’ve seen in the last few years. A screen that functions well as a self supported laptop display but can fold into media playback or flat drawing formats is the most useful 2-in-1 format you can buy. The trouble is, Microsoft is charging a pretty hefty premium for this highly desirable tech, with the Surface Laptop Studio 2 costing hundreds, or thousands in some regions, more than similar offerings… even when on a discount. For those that can afford this business laptop, the unique touch capabilities pair nicely with the more powerful Intel 13th Gen and Nvidia 40 series components to ensure there’s no hardware limitations to your creativity. The sweet spot for the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is the Nvidia RTX 4050 GPU offering, since it has the highest combined performance per dollar out of the range.

The Microsoft Laptop Studio 2 is a pro laptop with a beautifully engineered design and a stunningly good display. It looks great at every angle and the refresh rate of 120Hz ensures everything is super-smooth. All of this quality results in a high starting price, which will put many people off, especially considering a decent MacBook Pro can be bought for cheaper. The battery life is still lacking and the processing performance means this laptop is fine for digital artists but not for 3D artists needing beefier hardware.

Primarily the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 is for creatives with deep pockets, who need a powerful computer they can also draw on. If you just need a powerful laptop, there are other, more affordable options, the main reason to get this is if you think you’ll take full advantage of the hinge on the screen that lets it be used in multiple configurations. It is a fantastic, powerful, versatile laptop for a very specific audience. That audience is absolutely going to love it.

After upgrading the CPU to the 13th generation Core i7-13700H, the performance of Surface Laptop Studio2 has been improved unprecedentedly. According to our test data, the multi-core performance of the i7-13700H is 87% better than the i7-11370H used in the previous generation product. You must know that this is achieved with lower power consumption (23W vs 28W). The excellent energy efficiency ratio of NVIDIA RTX 40 is also well known. Surface Laptop Studio2 is equipped with the latest RTX 4060 Laptop GPU, which only releases 30W of performance. The game frame rate is also doubled compared to the RTX 3050 Ti used in the previous generation product. improvement. Games like “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” and “Forza Horizon 5” can run at frame rates above 60FPS. “Cyberpunk 2077” has a frame rate of 130FPS with the support of DLSS 3 technology. The latest “CS2” can easily run above 120FPS.

The Surface Laptop Studio 2 continues to shine with its unique design, and the hardware upgrades to make it marginally more convincing to power users, artists, and professionals. However, the shortcomings of its predecessor, including things like battery life, processing future-proofing, and some aspects of performance, present hurdles at this price point that make it difficult to recommend broadly. Having used it in my specific workflow as a student and photo editor, I believe there is a market for this laptop for many people. The high price tag is a major factor that hinders choosing this laptop over others for potential buyers, especially when pitted against high-performing like Dell’s XPS, Apple’s MacBook, and Lenovo’s X1 Carbon line. However, I can recommend the Surface Laptop Studio 2 if you’re looking for a laptop that specifically caters to the digital creator workflow with aggressive performance and a unique user experience in a way more traditional professional laptops don't.

The two major knocks against the Surface Laptop Studio 2 are its price and limited configurations that top out with NVIDIA RTX 4060 graphics, which makes it feel more like a great all-rounder than an all-out mobile powerhouse. While there’s no defending its cost, I’m not as bothered by the latter, because there’s a lot of value in a system that offers unmatched adaptability. With its innovative design, brilliant display, above-average battery life and improved connectivity, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 can handle a lot of different assignments with ease. It’s a great system for editing photos and videos, and stylus support makes drawing or taking notes a delight. When you factor in the excellent keyboard, Windows Hello IR cameras and one of best touchpads on a Windows laptop today (courtesy of Sensel), you get an incredibly versatile mobile workstation. And if we revisit that classic line from Shakespeare, “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one,” which is precisely what we have here with the Surface Laptop Studio 2.

Refreshed specs, alongside a new USB-A port and a microSD card reader, make the Surface Laptop 2 Studio feel like the ultimate form of Microsoft’s do-everything notebook. Its 14.4-inch display is bright and accurate while also supporting a 120Hz refresh rate. Its new aluminum chassis is sturdier than before, though it does come with a tiny bit of added heft. And, while it’s not as fast as a dedicated gaming rig, it can be configured with up to NVIDIA RTX 4060 graphics. However, with a starting price of $2,000 or $2,400 for one with a discrete GPU, Microsoft is asking people to pay a lot for the Surface Laptop Studio 2’s versatility.

Deciding whether the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 is right for you comes down to two key questions: does the Surface name deserve a premium? And does the design of the Surface Laptop Studio 2, namely its pull-forward design, justify that premium? Remember, a number of competing devices might require the purchase of a separate tablet for inking, if that’s important to you. You could argue that there’s no way anyone should pay $2,000/£2,000 for the entry-level Surface Laptop Studio 2, which has 16GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD storage, and integrated graphics. Even with the unique design, that’s a lot to swallow. But with a content-creator’s budget, even the higher-end Surface Laptop Studio 2 looks a lot more compelling. The real wild card is the laptop’s performance. By itself, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 simply doesn’t have the performance to keep up with its cheaper competitors.

Thanks to its innovative pull-forward reclining display and all-around premium design, the original Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio was a head turner, but the performance was disappointing. The new Surface Laptop Studio 2 (starts at $1,999.99; $3,299.99 as tested) remedies that, with powerful modern components plus a slight design refresh. A couple of added ports and a new aluminum exterior join 13th Gen Intel processing and Nvidia GeForce RTX 40-series graphics for not just improved performance over its predecessor, but genuine competitive power. A dedicated Intel Movidius neural processing unit (NPU) to handle local AI tasks such as video-call enhancements sweetens the pot. While the price is high (especially considering that the Surface Pen is not included), if you’re a creative professional seeking a powerful compact laptop that can double as a digital drafting tablet, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is a uniquely excellent proposition, earning our Editors' Choice award among creator laptops.

This laptop is for professional artists who'd benefit from using a display that tilts in an easel-like position for sketching and drawing. If they want, they can also transform the laptop into a tablet. After all, there are very few laptops on the market with discrete GPUs that can convert into three modes: clamshell, tablet and easel. As such, if you’re a pro artist who needs a powerful laptop with stylus support, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is ideal. I’d also recommend this laptop for differently abled users who could take full advantage of the Surface Laptop Studio 2’s adaptive touch trackpad feature. However, if you don’t fit into that niche, it’s difficult to justify getting this laptop over something like the beastly 14-inch MacBook Pro or another similarly priced gaming rig.

The Surface Laptop Studio 2 is caught in a strange spot. Although there are some improvements over the original model, those who don’t need peak power are better off buying the previous version. It’s cheaper at list price, and Microsoft is offering upwards of $500 off on configurations that are still available. Factoring in the performance, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 stands on the foundation of its unique design. The XPS 15 is cheaper, with similar and sometimes better performance, but it doesn’t offer deep integration with Windows. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is faster with the M2 Max and cheaper when you trick it out, but it also means you’ll need to be on board with macOS. There is a particular audience that will love the Surface Laptop Studio 2 — those that demand peak performance and want the unique form factor the machine offers. Most people will fall in one camp or the other, though, and there are far faster (and cheaper) options for them.

Second: the Surface Book solved for a need. The big issue with traditional 2-in-1 laptops is that they are heavy — and in particular, they are too hefty and bulky to be used for many of the things people want to use tablets for. The Surface Book can be a reading tablet, a piano music tablet, a conference companion, all of it. The Studio cannot do so nearly as comfortably. The Studio, with its three screen positions, merely replicates the same thing the classic 2-in-1 convertible has been doing for years on end. It can be a clamshell, it can be a tablet, or it can be a tent. So can a Lenovo Yoga, an HP Spectre x360, or any other number of classic convertibles — including some that pack very respectable GPUs. The Studio is achieving those ends differently, but it’s not clear to me that it’s achieving them thousands of dollars better. I am glad that a Windows convertible for creative professionals, with this level of craftsmanship and quality, exists.

The Surface Laptop Studio is sort of a unique PC thanks to its innovative hinged display, stylus support and well-rounded specs. The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 promises MacBook Pro-killing graphics performance in a much more versatile design, complete with flexibile touchscreen and included pen. It's kind of like a MacBook Pro and iPad Pro had a baby. Microsoft promises up to twice the graphics performance of a MacBook Pro with M2 Max chip — if you go for the highest end RTX 4060 GPU — and up to 18 hours of battery life. And you get an Intel Raptor Lake 13th Gen Core i7 H series CPU in a design that weighs under 4.5 pounds. I went hands-on with one at a Microsoft event in NYC — here's what I think so far.

What I can say, however, is that the Laptop Studio 2 feels just like the first-gen Studio. It’s an excellent premium laptop with high-end specs and tons of power, which is great. But as I noted in the first-gen Studio review, if you don’t need that extra power in a laptop, there’s little reason to go for the pricier Studio 2 over other options. Moreover, how you feel about the Laptop Studio form factor will have a significant impact on a potential purchase decision. I’ll be the first to admit the Laptop Studio is not a product for me. I like the unique hinge and screen system, but in my day-to-day work, it’s not something I ever found myself needing. But there are plenty of people out there that will benefit from the form factor. Ultimately, the Laptop Studio 2 is a spec bump and little else. Whether that spec bump is significant is a question that will wait for full-fledged reviews.

And finally, the Laptop Studio 2 now has a USB-A and microSD card reader on top of the existing dual USB-C (Thunderbolt 4), 3.5mm headphone jack, and Surface Connect charging port on the previous model. That's a big win for creators who seek additional storage space and/or often transfer photos and videos from their cameras. I just wish it was a full-sized SD card slot, as most of my professional gear uses that instead of microSD.
