The Microsoft Surface Go 2 is an excellent affordable Windows 10 tablet that features a premium design found in the company's more expensive devices. It offers a slight bump in performance over the original, but it is still rather underpowered – especially the base model. Once you start kitting it out with improved internals and essential add-ons like the Type Cover, the price starts to climb.

The Microsoft Surface Go 2 finally realizes the promise of the original Surface Go. Its bigger screen, smaller bezels and longer battery life (with an optional performance boost from the Core m3 CPU) add up to a sub-$800 2-in-1 that can handle a lot. Power users may think twice when looking at how it stacks up against the Pro 7 and the iPad Air. The Surface Pro 7 can be customized for much faster performance (the model we compared here costs $1,119, before Type Cover) though you're trading away hours of battery life. If you can be productive in iPadOS, you get a better screen, more speed and storage with the iPad Air, but it too costs more ($808 with Smart Keyboard). But as you've seen in this Microsoft Surface Go 2 review, Microsoft's made a solid Surface 2-in-1 for those who don't want to pay Pro prices. And, importantly for everyone working from home right now, it's got a webcam made for today, not a decade ago.

What is the tablet’s biggest selling point? It definitely has to be the display. Microsoft Surface Go 2 has a touchscreen IPS panel with a FullHD resolution, 3:2 aspect ratio, comfortable viewing angles, good contrast ratio, and a maximum brightness of 390 nits. Thankfully, it’s backlight doesn’t flicker and it practically fully covers the sRGB color gamut (99%). Moreover, the factory calibration of the colors is respectable with an average dE of 1.7. This makes it good for color-sensitive work like design, e-commerce, and more.

Surface Go 2 might be the best-looking small tablet you can buy but it comes with several compromises. If you love the design, you’ll likely make do with the shortcomings but if you chose this device for more practical use then be cautious with the model you choose.

While Microsoft continues to iterate on its Surface Laptop with varying screen sizes, the Surface Book, Surface Pro, Surface Pro X and now Surface Duo, looking to nail the coveted convergent mobile productivity device, I think they may have stumbled across it already with the Surface Go 2. Perhaps, tossing in an upgrade M3 or AMD’s latest in next year’s model might make it the powerhouse replacement that could be the best of both portability and mobility for the average consumer.

Windows laptops still have the potential to feel clunky, but this is a great buy if you want the familiarity of fully fledged Microsoft Office software. And despite the weak processor, the Surface Go 2 is surprisingly good way to play older games.

The new Surface Go is a compelling second-generation device, but question marks remain over its long-term suitability for productivity, particularly on the baseline Intel Pentium Gold model.

That said, the Surface Go 2 isn’t bad -- it’s just not for me. My concern is that it also doesn’t work for others. The Go 2’s biggest argument is that it runs full Windows, but at this power level I think the benefits of that claim are few. The people who actually need to run full-fledged Windows 10 likely need something more than what the Go 2 offers. And the people who don’t will find lower-cost alternatives powered by Chrome OS, or even Apple’s $429 iPad, more than sufficient.

The Surface Go 2 addresses one of the original’s biggest issues, an upgrade but that minimalist approach to iteration only draws attention to the ways in which Microsoft's MicroPC has failed to evolve with the times. Where Apple has invested in making the pitch to treat their tablets as real PCs more compelling than ever, the Surface Go 2 settles for a tired refrain. Like the original, the Surface Go 2 is a decent enough first computer but it's not one you'll want to stick with for too long.

The Surface Go 2 looks to be a promising device, with clear potential of being one of the best non-Apple tablets on the market. Pair it up with the Type Cover, and it can even offer some of the benefits of a budget ultrabook. But with very minor improvements since the original, it's probably only worth considering for Surface Go newcomers.

Lisa Gade reviews the MS Surface Go 2, a 10.5” Windows tablet that’s in many ways a smaller Surface Pro. The Go 2 has a .5” larger display and updated CPU options from the previous version. This small fanless tablet is about the same size as an iPad Pro 11”, and it weighs 1.2 lb. / 544g. Pricing starts at $399 but the $100-$130 Type Cover keyboard and $100 Surface Pen aren’t included. The Windows 10 tablet starts out in S mode but you can switch it to Windows 10 Home mode easily and for free. The base model has a 1.7 GHz Pentium Gold 4425Y and the high end model has a Core m3 and optional 4G LTE. The Pixel Sense IPS display has a 3:2 aspect ratio with touch and N-Trig pen support. The Surface Go 2 has a Surface Connect port compatible with the Surface Dock and Surface Dock 2, a USB-C Gen. 1 port, 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD card slot under the kickstand.

Our rating reflects how we feel about the Microsoft Surface Go 2: polite applause, with reservations. We can’t ignore a relatively low-cost Surface that’s optimized for videoconferencing as well as everyday web and office work. Keep in mind, though, that for $170 more than our review unit, you can buy a 8GB RAM/128GB SSD version of the Surface Pro 7, with a bigger screen and keyboard and a more powerful processor, though without LTE.

Commentaire
Intel UHD Graphics 615:
