Anyone who likes Windows Phone and has been dying for a huge canvas with which to use it will like the Lumia 640 XL. Its 5.7-inch display shows off the Live Tile interface of Microsoft's mobile operating system well, and makes it easier to do things like type messages and notes, as well as watch videos and view photos. The biggest drawback is its below-average battery life. If you want a smartphone that lasts all day and provides better overall performance, we'd recommend the $249 OneTouch Idol 3. But the Lumia 640 XL is a solid phablet for Windows Phone enthusiasts.

The Lumia 640 XL has a great set of features for its $249 price tag. It’s disappointing that the battery cover could get bent out of shape so easily though, and it’s also disappointing that there is no Qi wireless charging capable battery cover available at this time. You’ll also want to get a MicroSD card since it only has 8Gb of storage. Personally, if you’re in the market for a Windows Phone 8.1 phablet, the Lumia 1520 can still be found new for less than $300.

Windows Phones in general are in short supply, which means that we’re more accepting of phablet-sized ones even more, especially when they’re even rarer to find in the wild. Far from being a specs beast meant to tackle on the big names in space, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL carries a refreshing balance of value and performance.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL has surprised us. We've been critical of some phones in the past that seemed big with no real advantage to their size. Although larger phones are becoming more common - and the 640 XL is among the largest out there - we're quite taken with this Lumia.

Like any giant phone, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is not for everyone. It’s big, really big, and while it puts in enough thoughtful touches to avoid becoming a nightmare to use, the sheer dimensions take their toll along the line. The current version of Windows Phone doesn’t exploit that extra space either, so we're not going to pretend this is a perfect phone that gets everything right.

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL 3G Dual SIM is one of the seven newly introduced Lumia 640 smartphones. It's the bigger model offering massive 5.7" screen estate and higher resolution camera. If you are keen on the phablet class, you'll find the Lumia 640 XL very likable with great grip and solid construction. We'd recommend the matte flavors as the glossy materials compromise both the handling and looks. The removable rear cover and battery come as a nice bonus, too.

This phone is a great pick for somebody’s first smartphone. It has kick-ass hardware at an affordable price: In Europe, the 3G model currently starts at 189 euros (around $210 USD), while the LTE model is priced at 219 euros ($245 USD). Translation: really inexpensive. In the US, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is coming later this summer on AT&T, T-Mobile, and MetroPCS. Costs will likely be comparable.

If you're a power users, then you won't buy this device, simply because it's not as powerful as its competitors. On the other hand, for light users and those who edit a lot of documents or work on spreadsheets on their phones, the Microsoft Lumia 640XL is a very good choice.

Microsoft promises it has some Windows 10-powered flagship phones in the pipeline, and it's unfair to compare the Lumia 640 XL to the Galaxy S6 and the best models on the market. If you're on a budget and you want a big phablet-style handset, then give the Lumia 640 XL some serious consideration. The only unknown is how much of a difference Windows 10 is going to make, so you might want to hold off for a few months until the first reviews appear.

There isn’t a lot of competition in this “economy large-screen” class today, with Huawei’s Mate costing £100 more. Samsung once threw its Galaxy Grand into this category, but sidelined it in favour of the Note, and today Samsung’s Note 4 is twice the price of the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL. Even the two-year-old Note 2 costs more.

We thought we'd seen the last great Windows phablet, but the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL has proven to be a more than worthy successor to the Nokia phones of old. Its size won't be for everyone, but its superior battery life and capable camera make it by far the better travel companion. Its big screen is also arguably much better suited to Microsoft's Office 365 offer, as you get more space for editing your documents. All that extra value does come at a cost, though, as the 4G version of the XL is almost another £70 on top of the SIM-free Lumia 640. Still, if you have the budget and want a phone that can go the distance, the Lumia 640 XL is an excellent choice.

Microsoft's 5.7in Lumia 640 XL behemoth hits the mark with slick functionality at a cracking price. The Lumia 640 is a fantastic business smartphone at a knockdown price. The screen won't blow anyone away, and high-powered gaming might be a bit of a struggle, but otherwise, it'll sail through both professional and personal use with ease.

If you’re after a phablet for watching media on the go with, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is a great buy, and it’s certainly the best big phone for under £200 - we’d just love to see better construction and more customisability in Windows Phone.

As phablets go, Microsoft’s Lumia 640 XL has quickly won us over. It’s an undeniably feature rich handset and despite being a little underpowered, delivers on the performance side too. It’s a well-balanced big-screened smartphone with a top-notch camera experience and to top it off a particularly impressive price tag.

During pre-launch interactions, Microsoft said it is positioning the Lumia 640 XL against Samsung's Grand series of mid-range, large-screen devices; explicitly dismissing the challenge posed by the likes of Xiaomi, Micromax, and others in the same segment. The company seems to have missed that the Grand series no longer enjoys the mindshare it once did, and by pricing the phone at Rs. 15,799, Microsoft certainly fails to acknowledge the existence of the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note and Micromax's Yu Yureka, which offer similar specifications - and an ecosystem with a much bigger collection of apps - at nearly half the price.

Like nearly all Lumia phones, the Lumia 640 XL stands out for its battery life and camera performance, but overall it's hard to recommend this device to anyone given the options already available in the market.

Microsoft is setting off on the right foot with its first major phone releases. The prices look good and the hardware even better at the price, especially once you factor in the inclusion of that Office 365 subscription. Microsoft is planning to release both phones in April. We’ll post our full review once we’ve got our hands on a review sample and had the chance to test the phones more thoroughly.

The new Microsoft Lumia 640 and XL are nice looking smartphones and they will be relatively cheap. An upgrade to Windows 10 is also a positive if you're a fan of the platform. However, there's little to get excited about here in terms of specs. These are just yet more Lumias joining the already crowded range.

The two devices have very similar spec sheets. The key areas in which they differ are their screens, batteries and cameras. Both are powered by the quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC, which has been a favourite of low-cost manufacturers for a while now, but is getting on a bit in age. Both phones have 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage space and support for MicroSD cards of up to 128GB capacity. Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GLONASS and FM radio are also common.

The Lumia 640 XL suggests Microsoft is trying to retain its reputation for being a company that offers decent phones outside of the very top-end models. Making a good £500 phone is one thing, but pulling the same trick off at £180 is quite another.

I’m a fan of the updated Windows OS, it’s slick, fast and stable and I feel that the 640 XL’s large 5.7-inch screen is a great showcase for it. As a low-end device, it offers a strong feature set that will tempt people who were willing to spend a bit more on a rival device.

As with the Lumia 640, the 640 XL comes with a year's subscription to Office 365 with 1TB cloud storage, and you can also use the Office 365 subscription on a further tablet and a PC or Mac. This is worth around £60, so is quite a bonus.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 is more compact of the two with a 5" 720p screen and is will take on the Moto G (2015) at a Moto E (2015) price. The one we handled had a glossy polycarbonate body and one of the brightest orange colors we've seen in person. These high-visibility colors are classic Lumia, Stephen Elop had the Cyan version in his hands, but there are also the more muted Black and White colors.

Commentaire
