The MSI X340 is very much designed for one thing, a very thin profile ultraportable. It does this extremely well with a profile much more similar to the MacBook Air albeit without as much taper. It performs decently thanks to the Intel CULV platform. It is just dragged down by too many issues to make it a very attractive ultraportable. For one, the slim battery provides it with very little running time and the keyboard just feels too cheap for heavy useage.

Ever since the ultra-slim MacBook Air came out about a year ago, computer manufacturers have been falling over themselves to produce similar models that are exceptionally thin and stylish and will fill in that middle ground between netbooks and larger laptops. Stunning to look at, lightweight and with a host of unexpected peripherals, the X340 is nevertheless let down by a sub-standard keyboard and the need for a separate external optical drive to make the most of the new Intel Core 2 Solo processor.

MSI's X340 is portable and stylish, but lacking in performance If your needs are simple and you're content with a machine which happily lets you create documents, reports and presentations, the MSI X340 may be just the machine you're after. MSI has managed to squeeze the components into a truly thin and tiny chassis, providing one of the most portable laptops around. The MSI X340 proves itself to be something of a mixed bag. Its tiny size and weight make it a great ultraportable, but the poor keyboard, lack of an optical drive, and limited performance and USB ports let it down. However, its worth a look if your needs are simple.

Mediocre performance, uninspiring battery life and a poor keyboard conspire to leave it tussling with far cheaper netbooks, and its deficiencies almost end up making the MacBook Air look like rather good value for money. Set it against classier ultraportables such as Sony's delightful VGN-Z17, though, and it's shown the door in no uncertain fashion. As it stands, it marks an awkward halfway house between netbook and ultraportable, while delivering few of the benefits of either.

MSI's new X-Slim series laptops are the closest clone yet of Apple's MacBook Air. And thanks to its use of plastic casing and cheaper components, the X340 also hits a lower price point - but will it prove as attractive as the ultrathin and ultralight original? It may be exactly two-thirds the price of the MacBook Air, but we can’t help feeling that you’re getting only half the laptop in most respects. It lacks the speed, solidity and grace of the Apple envelope-filler, although some may be tempted by the extra portage, extra year’s warranty and opportunity to swap batteries on long journeys.

The MSI X-Slim X340 is very thin and lightweight, but lacks some refinement. The keyboard could use some extra bracing and the missing driver support for the touchpad kills many standard features we have come to expect from laptops these days. Basic support for scrolling or defined touch zones is gone, and you can't even adjust sensitivity. This could be corrected with the release of proper drivers, but as it stands the support site tells you to use native Windows drivers. Battery life with the stock 4-cell battery wasn't the best with only 32Wh of capacity, but we understand that the smaller battery is thinner and more visually appealing. Overall if you like the looks of the Apple MacBook Air but don't like the price, and you think the HP Pavilion dv2z is too thick, the MSI X-Slim X340 might be for you.

As another take, from another manufacturer, on the MacBook Air, it performs well enough to be a contender on most fronts. Although it doesn’t have the powerful graphics seen within that notebook, it’s still good enough for most people’s needs. It’s probably best to consider the X340 as a cross between a netbook and a notebook, taking into account all that’s on offer, only with an added style and sophistication not normally seen in the former category of computers. We feel this notebook firmly sits between both of those worlds, with the lightness of one and the processing power and screen size of the other.

Working with this little gadget is quite fun, but sadly MSI did not put all its effort into the designing a must-have notebook. Nobody likes a glossy surface on the palm rests which gets filled with fingerprints in a matter of minutes. If something is shiny, it must be clean all the time. We have no clue if there are production techniques which will prevent fingerprints on such a surface, but we doubt it. So, the much smarter choice would be a rough, matte surface which is nearly immune to smears and fingerprints.

What matters is the MSI X340's value for money. For those who want a larger screen, maybe to watch a couple movies, and also to get some light typing done, this is a more powerful machine than a conventional netbook and will do you just fine. If you've been an admirer of the Air but couldn't get over its lack of ports (or its high price tag), then you'll be fine. Now, if MSI packed in a power GPU, the MSI X340 would be a killer all-around choice. But as it stands, you're getting a good deal of portability and power at a price that most ultraportable users could afford. This is one of those rare times when rating PCs is more than a pure numbers game - if the MSI X340 suits you, it's a bargain.

While Apple's MacBook Air has never been the ideal ultraportable, it was certainly the most memorable. And since its introduction a little over a year ago, we’ve seen notebook manufacturers surpass the Air’s thinness, port selection, and performance—though usually such feats come with a much higher price. The MSI X340 is a stunningly svelte machine with a bright 13.4-inch screen in a package lighter than most 10-inch netbooks. The Core 2 Solo processor allows for Vista, but performance could be better.

One of the laptop component developments we've been most eager to see hit the market has been Intel's new ultralow voltage CPUs. Dubbed CULV (for Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage), this new line is differentiated from the classic ULV chips by lower prices, clearly aimed at consumers looking to step up from an Atom Netbook CPU. MSI's superslim X340 offers the slick look of a MacBook Air or Dell Adamo, but cast in plastic for about half the price.

If Apple is the up-market department store of the IT industry, MSI is probably the cheap and cheerful corner shop. Nothing wrong with that we should add, everyone needs a good corner shop after all, but a corner shop's trade is more White Lightning and lottery ticket buyers than bottles of Cristal and affluent city-dwellers. From a distance the X340 looks like a tempting proposition, but closer inspection quickly reveals several serious flaws. Its build quality and feel are lacklustre and simply don't justify the premium MSI clearly hopes to demand for its svelte new baby. This leaves a slightly overpriced and underperforming laptop that, while competent, lacks the spit and polish necessary to recommend it.

Poor man's MacBook Air or rich man's netbook -- call it what you want, but the MSI X340 is definitely worth talking about. It's a super-thin, super-light laptop that will appeal to users who either think netbooks are too small, or the MacBook Air is too expensive. It's available now for around £750. With the X340, MSI has drawn heavily on the MacBook Air for inspiration, which probably wasn't its smartest idea. The X340 certainly looks great and has good connectivity, but its poor keyboard and woeful battery life let it down badly.

he MSI X340 (021US), which debuted at CES 2009 as the X320, is nearly an identical twin to the Apple MacBook Air (Nvidia 9400M GT). Other than color—our review unit was black, and there's also a silver version—it's hard to tell them apart at first glance. The X340 is a cheap Air knock-off, to put it lightly, but there's more to this exceptionally thin ultraportable than its cellar-low price. Matching the Air's weight and dimensions is an impressive feat in its own right, yet MSI adds a full array of physical ports and a removable battery, which won't find in the Air. For the MSI X340 you spend about half as much as you would on the MacBook Air, but you get only half as much in design and craftsmanship.

MSI's laptops haven't traditionally tended to be the most stylish members of the portable pack, but the X340 sets the record straight. If it weren't for the glowing white MSI logo adorning the X340's lid, we might have been convinced that we were looking at a new version of Apple's MacBook Air. MSI's X340 somehow manages to be sleek, sexy and undesirable all at the same time

The MSI X-Slim X340 does a lot of things right, but it is not without its problems. The keyboard is, without doubt, the biggest sticking point for us, as we not only feel the layout needs some work, and it’s also a less than satisfying experience to type on it – it’s just a little bit too dead for our liking. Some may not find that an issue though. Aside from that, the aesthetics are a little mix and match on the black version because the combination of finishes just doesn’t work all that well in our opinion. It can be fixed by simply opting for the white version though if you can put up with dirt being much more visible. Finally, the trackpad has a strange lag issue that you may or may not find a problem – it wasn’t immediately apparent to us at first, but it came up when we were doing some image editing that required precise cursor control.

MSI’s 13-inch ultraportable is slim, slick, and affordable, but its keyboard could be better. For $899, the MSI X340 delivers on the promise of an affordable ultraportable as thin and light as the MacBook Air. However, while it provides better performance than netbooks, it doesn’t provide the same build quality and graphics oomph. But that may not matter to those who like that the X340 costs half as much as the base model Air, and has more ports and much better battery life, to boot.

Commentaire
