Naturally, this only works when you're plugged in. When you're running on batteries it runs at the same clock speed but puts performance ahead of battery life, so screen brightness is typically higher. To deal with the extra power, you'll notice the fan kicks in to life and stays on for the duration you run Turbo Boost. The 80GB hard drive is a standard laptop hard disc that has been partitioned into two.

The MSI Wind U100, despite the new model designation, is still the same netbook that launched last summer in response to the Eee PC. While the chassis and basic design hasn't changed much, the Wind has picked up a few handy updates over the last couple months that help keep it competitive with the onslaught of new netbook offerings. The Wind offers a sturdy chassis that will take your constant handling in stride. The system is well built and covered in high quality paint that is very fingerprint resistant. Although the design comes off a bit bland, it's still a pretty good looking machine that will look the part in any situation, boardroom or coffee shop. While the original specs that called for an 80GB hard drive with 3-cell battery can still be found, most Winds on sale today pack 160GB and a beefier 6-cell unit.

Larger storage, better networking and the all-important extended battery life make the revised U100 a winner. Combined with the more attractive choice of colours, free carry bag in the box, and an extended warranty to 2 years, we feel the original MSI Wind U100 is not just the first Wind, it also breezes into first place.

It's no secret that the key to the Eee PC 1000H's current A List status is its tremendous six-hour battery life, three times that of its rivals. We know it, you know it, and MSI certainly knows it - hence the belated introduction of the MSI Wind U100-291UK, now with the all-important six-cell battery.
A vast improvement that brings it almost in line with the Eee PC 1000H - if the price falls the Wind may just edge it.

There are some solid reasons to consider MSI's Wind. It's small and fairly light (about 1kg), and it's sturdy enough to take a beating. But other solidly-built mini-notebooks are just around the corner, including Lenovo's S10 and probably an entry from Dell this Autumn. If you can't wait, the MSI Wind is a solid recommendation to buy now.

What will make or break a netbook for most consumers is the overall feel and design of the laptop. The MSI Wind U100 is very well laid out and designed to make it extremely portable but still easy to use. The 3-cell battery does limit its overall running time however.

Move over, Asus: MSI has skipped the imitation game that most other manufacturers have played so far and actually bested the Eee with the Wind. Its $550 price tag may make it $150 more than the original Eee, but the refinement and features MSI has added make it well worth the premium, especially when Asus’ 10-inch Eee runs for $700. For the moment, MSI’s Wind definitively blows away the competition.

You know a notebook has hit the sweet spot in design when it elicits jealous looks from owners of both full-size laptops and the tiny Asus Eee PC. In the new ultraportable laptop class, the MSI Wind U100 strikes the best balance yet between compact size, light weight, usability, and performance. The MSI Wind U100 strikes the right balance between portability, power, and comfort, making it a top choice among inexpensive ultraportable laptops.

As if the ultramobile PC space weren't already crowded enough, MSI Computer Corp. has blown in with its Wind UMPC. MSI basically (though not literally) took the ASUS EeePC 900, improved it, and slapped its own branding onto it. The Wind doesn't go out of its way to differentiate itself from the crowd, but it's still a top-tier UMPC in many ways.
Out of all the UMPCs available in the market, the MSI Wind is the best deal.

The MSI Wind U100 makes a positive first impression with its polished design and roomy (for a Netbook) display and keyboard, but it's missing a handful of features--bigger battery, solid-state hard drive, and WWAN--that would turn it from a very good to a great on-the-go mini-laptop.

Category of small cheap notebooks became very popular and there is no wonder why most of big brands want a piece of cake for themselves. But Asus got all of them off-guard. Because of that we’ve been waiting rather long for Eee’s true rival . We’ve already mentioned MSI’s agility which allowed them again to be first with new product on market. Their trump card wears name Wind and model that InsideHW had tested is MSI Wind U100. Even if we don’t pay much attention, during notebook tests, on package we just cannot overlook it this time. Picture that was used for package was chosen in that manner so that your new notebook looks like it came with a gift bow. Perfect package choice for this “little guy”.

The MSI Wind, the latest small computer in the mini-notebook trend started by Asus, is around the same size as the Asus Eee PC 900 and has the same white pearlescent case, making us wonder if MSI, like Asus, seems to be pitching its mini-notebook a handy handbag companion for women. However, the similarities between the Wind and its competitors end there. A small and light ultra mobile PC, which looks and performs better than some of its rivals.

There's a lot to like about the MSI Wind. It's a great design and benefits from an excellent keyboard and screen, but it's let down by battery life that cannot compete with the Eee PC 901 and undercut by a re-branded version, making you think twice. It's still a good machine and if you're happy to trade battery life for a better keyboard, or purchase a separate battery, it's still worth serious consideration, but it just misses out on a wholehearted recommendation.

If you’ve been holding off buying a netbook until the dust has settled, the good news is that you can reach for your credit card now. Though not quite as faithful a netbook as the Acer Aspire One or Eee PC 701, the MSI Wind takes extends the idea to its sensible limit, though the cheaper, rebadged Advent 4211 is better value.

The MSI Wind is arguably the best netbook on the market. It's stylish, it's easy to type on and it's quick. The wireless connectivity could have been better and the standard battery life is relatively poor, but these are issues you can get around. With that in mind, this device comes highly recommended.

So, the Wind is, in the main, the breath of fresh air we'd hoped for all along. It looks good, feels good and its ergonomics are by far the best of the mini-laptop bunch. Its pricing brings it dangerously close to fully-fledged laptops, and leaves the value-for-money crown firmly in the Acer Aspire one's possession, but for less than a quarter of the Sony VGN-TZ31's cost, you simply cannot buy a better ultraportable.

With the competition largely failing to deliver, the Wind’s main rival remains the Asus Eee PC 901. As we mentioned in our review of the 901, the specifications and performance are very similar, and both machines have key advantages. If battery life tops your needs, the 901’s standard six-cell unit is likely to swing things in its favour. If outright battery life isn’t a factor, however, or you don’t mind shelling out for an optional six-cell battery, then the MSI is actually the better laptop. The keyboard is a lot more comfortable, with bigger keys and a more responsive action. It’s close then, but with quality, usability and one of the best screens also in its favour, we believe the MSI Wind is arguably the most complete sub-notebook currently available.

The MSI Wind U100 is an impressive entry-level laptop. We never once felt as though compromises had been made. IT won't suit anyone looking for a powerhouse portable but if your needs are basic, writing emails and using the internet, or a word processor for the commute, this is as good as it currently gets.

If there were a Survivor: The Mini-Notebook series, and each of the ultra–low-cost notebooks were incrementally eliminated, the MSI Wind NB would be the one left standing. Unlike its competitors, the Wind NB offers the complete package, including an adult-size keyboard, a larger 10-inch screen, and a very capable Atom processor. This system’s solid performance, stellar 5-plus hours of battery life, and $499 price make it the best all-around mini-notebook to date.

We believe that a lot of people who never had a notebook will consider buying Wind PC U100. It is small and light, it has all you need from a notebook and it is as mobile as it gets. The battery life is not great, but it is still within acceptable levels. The 80GB Western Digital drive really helps a lot and 1GB of memory is enough for just about anything a normal notebook user might need. Realtek W-LAN uses Windows W-LAN manager; that is a bit primitive, as it forces you to type the password twice but it works quite well. We do believe that W-LAN can and will get a bit faster, but at least it works stable in four W-LAN environments we tested. Plastic is the biggest minus, as it leaves greasy fingerprint trails all over the small and cute case, but it’s nothing that a nice wipeoff cannot solve. From a design point, MSI deserves 9.5 of 10. We showed the machine to a dozen computer enthusiasts and non-geeks, including a few girls, and they all agree that this notebook looks great.
