It might not be sleek and sexy, but the 12in Lenovo ThinkPad X220 laptop has it where it counts: a rugged chassis, amazing keyboard, completely flexible and upgradable specifications including 3G, great IPS screen and - the icing on the cake - amazing battery life. If you can live with its chunky dimensions, require a customisable ultraportable and can afford its asking price, the X220 is still one of the best small laptops available.

Let’s get this clear, the Lenovo X220 caters to a very selective audience - business professionals and executives who don’t need the extra frills (read: 15.6-inch HD LED Widescreens, Blu-ray DVD writer, dedicated graphics card, HDMI, etc) in their laptop. What they do need is long lasting functionality, worry-free battery life and constant performance all encompassed in a sturdy chassis so there’s easy and quick access on the go. If you care about specs more and are looking for a personal laptop for general multimedia use, head over to our Dell XPS 15z review or something in a similar category. But, if the above mentioned points are crucial to your check list, the Lenovo X220 is a good buy.

The ThinkPad X220 is one of the best notebooks we have used in recent memory. It delivers everything a business user would need — power, long battery life and a plethora of connectivity options — in a small and portable package that is rated for demanding conditions for a price that businesses can afford and appreciate. The ThinkPad X220 delivers on all counts and earns our Editor’s Choice award as one of the best business ultraportable notebooks on the market today.

It's true, from afar the X220 could be mistaken as a five year old laptop -- one that couldn't last longer than four hours on a charge, and would be considered sluggish by today's standards (most likely because it would have been running Vista!). But in fact, that laptop is now the longest lasting and fastest ultraportable we've ever tested. How's that for unexpected?

Lenovo's X-series laptops have always been high-end ultraportable machines for business travelers who need to work on the go with a minimum amount of compromise. The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 packs in a new Intel Core i5 CPU and can run all day (depending on how you use it). With a 12.5-inch display, it's just a bit smaller than a 13-inch laptop, and it feels like an excellent compromise for frequent travelers.

The X220 is a very serious contender on the ultraportable market, as it packs great processing power in a very small package. The design is mostly great, with a fantastic keyboard and good touch pad, although the palm rest is a little small. The web cam is not top notch, but it’s a dismissible flaw, if we look at the big picture- fast, flexible, light, with a great battery.

Overall, the system is classic ThinkPad which looks and feels very sturdy. The one glaring flaw is the button-less touchpad, but if you can overlook that or accommodate using the TrackPoint buttons located above the touchpad, I can't see how you can go wrong with the X220 if a powerful ultraportable is what you're after.

Lenovo's ThinkPad X220 is certainly a must have ultraportable for any business person looking for a high performance but compact system. The new 2011 Core processors from Intel provide it with some serious gains over the past models. Graphics professionals will also be pleased with the optional IPS based display that is clearly one of the best on the market.

With the ThinkPad X220, Lenovo has combined epic battery life, strong performance, a bright screen, a responsive keyboard, and powerful security features to make one of the world's best ultraportables even better. Our biggest complaint is the flaky webcam, though we suspect that Lenovo will be able to address this issue. Users who want an even lighter notebook with a better screen and larger palm rest (but less horsepower and battery life) might prefer the 13-inch MacBook Air. However, if you want something that packs a ton of power into a tiny package, the X220 is an excellent choice.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is an amazing piece of engineering when you factor in all the features it squeezed into a 12-inch frame. It enlarged the keyboard and screen, while shedding some weight in the process. As a road-bound ultraportable, it had to be the most battery efficient in its class—and it was. Until the other laptops in this review transition to new Intel architecture, the X220 is the fastest business ultraportable and in a league of its own.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is arguably the best 12-inch business notebook currently on the market ... and we won't argue. Any business laptop that can deliver top-of-the-line perfromance and more than eight and a half hours of battery life with a standard 6-cell battery is amazing. The fact that the X220 can keep running for more than 18 and a half hours with the optional battery slice is nothing short of astonishing. Considering that the starting price of this notebook is less than $1000 we have a hard time not recommending the ThinkPad X220 for businesses looking for a powerful and durable notebook for a mobile workforce.

At $1,300, it’s certainly on the higher end of prices for modern laptops, though it isn’t obscenely expensive. We’ve seen higher price tags for bulkier machines that didn’t come close to performance like this.

We've always liked the ThinkPad X201, it was one of our favorite ultraportables despite a few complaints, including a high price tag. With Lenovo's new ThinkPad X220 it's hard to find anything not to love. The price is more accessible, the quality is excellent, the 12.5" display really hits the sweet spot for highly mobile computing minus the squint factor and the IPS option is a must-have. The laptop is very fast, yet runs cool and quiet. The keyboard is a touch typist's dream and the software management tools are top notch. The X220 handily wins our Editor's Choice award for ultraportable notebooks.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is mil-spec tested to endure in harsh conditions. This notebook has been tested to meet military specifications for exposure to physical shock, thermal shock, altitude, dust, vibration, humidity, heat and cold. The optional Slice battery costs $179 and adds weight and bulk, but the extra battery life will be worth it for travelers who need to be away from an outlet for extended periods.

As is appropriate for a business-class machine destined for an IT department’s imprint before going out to end users, the ThinkPad X220 comes with little preloaded third-party software. In fact, at bootup the only icon on the desktop was the Recycle Bin. But beyond the Windows 7 Professional operating system, Lenovo does preload Skype (for audio and video calls) and its own excellent software tools accessible via the handy ThinkVantage button above the Function keys.

A thick construction and hefty hinges create a reassuringly sturdy build that ought to help the X220i survive a life on the road. It’s certainly up for the journey, with a high-end, comfortable and impressive all-round experience, which is capped off by a decent battery life. Real road warriors ought to go the distance by upping battery to 23 hours, though, even in a basic configuration of the X220i wins a place in our cabin bag.

If you need an ultraportable 12” screen light weight laptop and have $800 to spend the X220 should be a strong consideration. The price is great for what you get, which is a very rugged laptop with a lot of power and various configuration options. I really love the Premium IPS screen option, for only +$50 it’s worth it. Other more expensive options such as an upgrade to a Core i7 processor or SSD storage aren’t necessary for most student needs, but if you really love having the latest and greatest technology it’s nice to have the option. My favorite part about the X220 is the excellent performance you get with the Core i5 processor and still to the moon battery life, almost 8 hours with a 6-cell under conservative usage. At 3.3lbs with the 6-cell battery the X220 is easy to carry in a backpack and you don’t have to bring the charger along during the day if you don’t want to.

Commentaire
