The Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G has a serviceable but not particularly impressive selfie camera. Exposure is accurate and noise is low in good light, but the camera often drops the ball with skin tones, crucially important for good selfies, and color in stills is generally a bit unsaturated. The bokeh mode is capable, but the camera’s shallow depth of field introduces blur in more distant subjects, including faces in group shots. The phone does better with front camera video, capturing a wide dynamic range and managing pleasant colors, but it’s still not quite up there with the very best. If you shoot only the occasional selfie, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G will get the job done, but if you are really into front camera usage, other phones offer a more compelling performance, especially in the Mate 30 Pro 5G’s price range.

For the last few weeks, I've lived in the Huawei ecosystem. My phone was either the P40 Pro or the Mate 30 Pro, my smartwatch was the Watch GT 2, and I even used a MediaPad for my tablet. This path is never one that I regret. I'm not sure I've ever been sent a Huawei product that I didn't like. The ecosystem all works together too, with Huawei Share enabling seamless file transfer.

An extremely-capable all-rounder, Huawei has ensured that the Mate 30 Pro has the hardware innovation to tackle even the most potent competitors on the market. Its quad-camera may change the tide of video capture superiority against Apple, the new Kirin chipset will be able to outpace most of the current silicon on the market and the phone's battery and fast-charging chops mean it outlasts most other phones out there. The phone is tempting with free wireless earbuds and a smartwatch (while stocks last) but only if you're ok with the lack of Google Services, which for many will be a dealbreaker.

Now about its main shortcoming… There are avenues to get Google services running on the Mate 30 Pro, but it’s not something we can officially condone. You might also have seen the recent news of HUAWEI working with other Chinese smartphone makers on an alternative app distribution platform, which might make things more interesting. Still, there’s a learning curve to picking up an Android phone sans Google’s services, and that might be hard to overlook, especially when the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro costs RM3899. It’s definitely worth it for the hardware here, but whether you can accept the slight annoyance of relearning how to get apps onto an Android smartphone is entirely up to you.

The Huawei Mate30 Pro 5G comes with similar packaging as the conventional Mate30 Pro with a matte black box that contains the smartphone itself wrapped in a protective plastic sleeve, a SIM ejector pin, a Type-C pair of headphones, a protective casing as well as a 40W Super Charge fast charger and paired USB Type-C cable. The only difference that you can tell from the external packaging is the manifest sticker on the side of the box.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s multimedia audio quality results are dominated by the company’s decision to equip it with only a single speaker. For starters, that means no stereo output, which greatly affects the quality of the user’s experience when playing back movies, TV shows, and music. In many cases, it will also be an issue when playing games. Having a single speaker on the bottom of the phone also means that holding the phone in the most natural landscape position for watching traditionally-formatted video puts the speaker off to one side, making the listening experience a bit unnatural because of the unbalanced sound.

I wish I could say that the Kirin 990 CPU also scored well on Geekbench 5, a benchmark we run to test a processor's efficiency. Without Google mobile services, this phone isn’t very useful, and there’s little hope that it will get those services any time soon if ever. Yes, at the time of writing, there’s ways to install Google’s apps onto the Mate 30 Pro, but it’s not exactly consumer friendly, and it relies on Google not flicking the kill switch to disable its software entirely on Huawei’s smartphone. This is something it could do at any time.

At the end of the day, the question is if the phone is worth its asking price. Google services issues aside, I do have the feeling that Huawei is asking too much for a phone that is cutting several corners. The lack of stereo speakers, a better-quality screen, and a more complete camera experience (HDR processing, video quality) are I think the three main gripes about the phone. 1099€ is just too much to ask given these weaknesses.

Huawei is the second largest smartphone maker in the world, and while the majority of sales still come from its homeland, the Chinese smartphone maker is best placed to provide much needed competition for Apple and Samsung. Huawei's breakneck pursuit of new features has proven extremely enticing for phone buyers in Europe, for example, where it is closing in on second-placed Apple in terms of market share. Similarly, in Australia, Huawei has shot to a strong third position in a relatively short space of time.

Huawei's Mate 30 Pro is unsurprisingly potent on paper and the new focus on video from the camera experience seems like a smart move, rather than simply building on the P30 Pro's zoom capabilities. Make no mistake, the Mate 30 Pro’s camera system is certainly a revolutionary one. By smartly incorporating two larger-than-usual sensors, Huawei has created a video-focused counterpart to the P30 Pro’s obvious photography focus ones. And the results are equally impressive. Colours are accurate, and the camera adjusts for changing exposures quickly and accurately so you no longer have the issue of colours being drastically different when moving from one camera to another. From what we’ve seen, the larger sensor of the Ultra-wide Cine camera definitely makes a difference in terms of low light capture and sensitivity. If anything, the improved slow-motion capture mode has no equal among other smartphones in the market, so that certainly puts it one rung above the rest. We’d love to see how it compares to the camera modules on other recently released smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Note10+ and the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but that will have to come in a later article after the Pixel 4 gets launched too.

The success of the Mate 20 Pro set an incredibly high bar for Huawei to clear, and I think the company managed it by the skin of their teeth. This phone doesn’t tick every box: video still has a ways to go, but the awesome detail and insane low-light performance make this my go-to when I want to take an image. But there's no escaping the fact that with no Play Store on board and only partial Google app functionality, the Mate 30 Pro can't be recommended for anyone outside of China. In fact, actively avoiding it would be the only sensible advice. The moment Google gets the license to provide products and services to Huawei will be the moment this phone will become a true all-rounder. With an overall DXOMARK Selfie score of 93, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro makes it into the top five in our current ranking and delivers images with good exposure and color as well as a nice texture/noise trade-off in most conditions. The fixed-focus lens means that the camera is not ideal for close-range and selfie-stick shots, and video clips could do with slightly better stabilization, but the Mate 30 Pro is capable of recording decent still and video selfies overall. This said, if the front camera is a top priority for you, some better options are available.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s overall DXOMARK Camera score of 121 sets an impressive new benchmark for smartphone camera performance and is the device to beat in the second half of 2019. The new Mate does not show any real weaknesses in the camera department and delivers good still image and video quality in most situations. Its photo quality is very good across the board, but its texture/noise balance is truly outstanding, with excellent detail rendering in almost all conditions while keeping image noise at low levels. The wide-angle camera’s comparatively narrow field of view could be a criticism, but the wide-angle cam delivers good image quality; moreover, the Mate 30 Pro is one of the best for bokeh and zoom as well.

Huawei pushes smartphone innovation beyond what we need or realise we even wanted, but not even ridiculously good photos and bewildering slow motion video can distract from the biggest issue here. In the face of adversity, Huawei has almost knocked it out the park, the proverbial ball is flying through the sky, but it looks like its heading into one of the fielder's hands. I've been using a Chinese 4G Huawei Mate 30 Pro (model LIO-AL00), which, like all Huawei's phones sold in mainland China, lack any Google services. This phone isn't entirely representative of what Western markets will get when the Mate arrives on European shores; likely the China-specific apps will be swapped out for local alternatives, should Huawei still be unable to preload Google's apps and services.

This was always going to be the big issue with the new Huawei phones, and we'll have a more fully formed recommendation after our full review.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is a beautiful phone that comes with all the features you'd want from a handset in 2019, but it doesn't sport Google's core services, such as the Google Play Store and that severely hampers what it can do.

Huawei has promised the US-China trade war will not affect the Mate 30 launch and indeed it didn't stop the maker from going full steam ahead with its plans. Huawei has announced the Mate 30 series on September 19 in Munich, and the new phones are looking very intriguing, with or without Google's services framework.

The Mate 30 Pro is a fantastically designed smartphone. The camera is superb. The design is a decent progression from the Mate 20 Pro, and we like pretty much everything about it. But there's a massive problem with it that shouldn't be underestimated: The lack of Google apps is a big problem. How can stores, networks, or we recommend it against the P30 Pro or a competitor? As enthusiasts of tech, that makes us very sad, but it is the truth. Such bad news can probably only be mitigated by a low price. But with 799 Euros set as the current cost - and no UK price yet whatsoever - we can't see how Huawei can sell this phone in Europe effectively.

An extremely-capable all-rounder, Huawei has ensured that the Mate 30 Pro has the hardware innovation to tackle even the most potent competitors on the market. Its quad-camera may change the tide of video capture superiority against Apple, the new Kirin chipset will be able to outpace most of the current silicon on the market and phone battery and fast-charging chops mean it'll outlast most other phones out there. But outside of China, all of that effort will likely have been for nought, with the lack of Google Play Services tainting the user experience. If and when the US government revokes its ban, Huawei is ready to reinstate this much-needed features but until that point, this otherwise excellent-looking phone will likely be passed up for less politically volatile alternatives.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro will not come with Google Android. As GadgetGuy Val Quinn reported from IFA Future Huawei Phones will still run Android (sort of). In simple terms, it runs an Android Open Source Project fork of Android that does not have access to any Google Mobile services, apps, Play Store, security updates, or future versions of Android.

Yes, the cameras are fantastic, and the screen looks beautiful, but without the Play Store, multiple tasks on the Mate 30 become much more difficult than they should be on a 2019 smartphone. It’s exciting to pick up and use briefly, but without this day-to-day convenience, for now you should probably leave the Mate 30 on the store shelf.

Commentaire
ARM Mali-G76 MP16:
