Those of you with an eye for style will want to check out HP's Mini by Studio Tord Boontje. It features a very nice 3D pattern of flora and endangered animals on its lid, while on the inside it has all the components of a basic netbook. There couldn't be more of a contrast between the bog-standard netbook specifications and the extravagant styling, but there's no law that states simple netbooks can't look good, and the Mini by Studio Tord Boomtje definitely does look good!

Have HP made this netbook a bit too 'premium'? HP's flagship netbook is the extremely smart Mini 2140. Crafted from brushed aluminium and silver plastics, it certainly makes a visual statement, but performance is sluggish due to the fact it runs Windows Vista. With plenty of style and all-round usability, the HP Mini 2140 is certainly a great little netbook. However, performance isn't quite up to scratch and it doesn't come cheap, meaning, overall, we prefer the Mini 110c.

One of the best netbooks that we tested so far, HP 2133 Mini-Note , has got its successor in form of, eagerly awaited, HP Mini 2140. Beside display size (8.9 inch at older and 10.1inch on the new model) differences between HP 2133 and HP 2140 are minimal when it comes to external aesthetics. Chassis is 6mm longer and 1mm wider and ventilation grills are redesigned. For all those that are not familiar with our review of HP 2133 we will just say that HP 2133 has very good quality build and nice business look. HP Mini 2140 has very good autonomy, which came as surprise because battery has relatively small capacity, and it is the proof of good optimizations. As we concluded in the review of its older brother, HP 2140 presents top class when it comes to netbooks but all that class comes with adequate price tag.

The HP Mini 2140 is a very solid netbook that offers an amazing keyboard instead of something condensed that might be difficult to type on for extended periods of time. It wooed us last time we reviewed it, and it gets the same response again now that it offers a higher resolution screen. The other alternatives at this time for a comparable resolution screen is turning to the Sony VAIO P, at the starting cost of $899, or the Dell Mini 10 for $484 for similar configuration. Our big complaint with this model is the glossy plastic layer over the display, which adds glare and created a trap for dust.

The Mini 2140’s keyboard is 92% of the size of a full-sized keyboard. Like the Mini 2133 and Mini 1000, the 2140 has an outstanding keyboard as far as netbooks go. I can type on it for hours at a relatively fast clip, but nothing compares to a full-sized keyboard. As a Mini 1000 user, I was comfortable with the 2140’s touchpad from day one, but having the mouse buttons to the left and right of the touchpad can be annoying for some users. It would be great if HP could incorporate a touchstick in its next business netbook.
Like most netbooks, the Mini 2140 has a glossy display. I strongly prefer matte displays and wish the Mini 2140 could be configured with one. It is more expensive than many other netbooks, but I think the Mini 2140 is a wise investment.

Netbooks aren't the bastion of quality and high end features. Sony's Vaio P caters to those who want little compromise in a tiny package, but at a higher price ($899 to $1,199). The HP Mini 2140 sits in between: it's closer to budget netbooks in size and price but adds key features like an aluminum casing for rigidity and good looks, WiFi draft N for faster wireless, Bluetooth (very handy if you wish to use your mobile phone as a modem for the Mini or just want to use a Bluetooth mouse) and an ExpressCard/54 slot. The construction is excellent, the machine looks good and that metal casing adds weight but it's still fairly light at 2.6 lbs. with the 3 cell battery. HP's software support is good, and they release easily installable drivers and firmware updates which is an advantage over the Eee PC and Acer netbooks. Acer's firmware updates require technical prowess while HP's are painless and it's maddening to upgrade RAM on the Acer (it requires complete disassembly).

If there's one thing going against the Mini 2140, it's the price tag that comes with it. Given the specs, we were expecting it to be closer to the £300 mark. We were also left yearning for the high-resolution display of the Mini-Note 2133, and although it boasts one of the best netbook keyboards out there, the three-cell battery means battery life is disappointing. Despite these complaints, this is still a decent, if pricey, netbook.

As a netbook, HP’s Mini 2140 isn’t the cheapest way to go, but it’s an attractive option. It has a great keyboard, a very nice case, and an impressive battery life. Those alone should be enough to get people to pay attention, but HP does have the solid Mini 1000 which has many of the strengths of the 2140, just without features like the VGA-out port, metal case, and expansion card slot. There are also features on the 2140 that you might never notice, but you can be glad they are there, like the accelerometer for hard drive protection. Overall, the 2140 is a very good product and while it shares so many internal components with the rest of the the netbooks currently available, it manages to differentiate itself in other ways.

So where does the HP Mini 2140 sit in the netbook hall of fame? Well, pretty close to the top as it happens. We love the keyboard, its lightweight nature and robust design. It is, however, a little on the pricey side compared to the competition. Both the Asus 1000HE and Samsung NC10, for example, are similarly specified, yet cheaper and offer better battery life. And it's the Mini 2140's price tag and performance away from the mains that ultimately stops it scoring higher – at £361 we were hoping to get the six-cell battery included as standard. That said, those who adored the Mini-Note 2133's keyboard may find this more powerful version simply too tempting to resist.

It's nice design touches like the screen cover and keyboard, as well as hardware advantages like the ExpressCard slot and Bluetooth, that you must keep in mind when considering the HP's $449 price: It's about a hundred bucks more than you'll pay for an otherwise comparably spec'd (1.6GHz Atom, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, 10.1-inch screen) rival from Acer, MSI, or another manufacturer at your local superstore. The Mini 2140 is one of the nicest netbooks we've seen. As is, we'd gladly pay a $50 premium for its excellent keyboard alone; whether we'd pay a $100 premium is a little less certain. It might depend on whether HP threw in the six-cell battery or the higher-resolution screen. Or, since we're greedy, both.

It also ditches Vista in favor of the more suitable XP Home and adds a larger screen to the mix. Altogether, this makes it a much more interesting netbook than its predecessor. On the whole, the 2140 is a big step up from the 2133 with no price premium – in other words it offers a lot of value while being one of the best netbooks currently on the market. Highly recommended.

HP is clearly targeting the business traveller with the Mini 2140, but its features and performance make it a good choice for consumers as well. The aluminum clad system is probably the best built and most durable netbooks on the market. With its excellent networking features and ExpressCard/54 slot, this netbook has lots of potential. When equipped with the six cell battery, battery life is very strong. Of course, it is one of the more expensive netbooks on the market.

The well-designed HP Mini 2140 combines solid construction with the computing power needed to handle typical netbook tasks. A large keyboard and full ExpressCard/54 slot, together with the fact that HP has managed to keep the price down, mean the 2140 is near the top of our list of most-desirable netbooks.

If you were expecting a miracle and lots of change, well, you thought wrong. HP stuck to a winning formula for the update and achieved a perfect balance this time around in the Mini 2140. Gone are the flaws of the previous machine in terms of performance and battery life, instead the Mini 2140 gained a wider screen, better performance and battery life while also losing some weight to make it even more portable. The excellent keyboard, speakers and screen quality are strong factors that remain true on this new revision too. So far, we like what's been updated, but face it, it's still the same platform that's being used in all current similarly spec'd machines. Deep inside our hearts, we were probably hoping to find a VIA Nano-based platform or the updated Poulsbo platform for the Atom processor. On the other hand though, it's good to see that HP has stuck with something that's comfortable and workable for now.

HP has assembled a compelling netbook package, but in the US at least, the HP Mini 2140 in its premium configuration bears a price tag that approaches what you'd expect to find on a good all-purpose machine.

The HP Mini 2140, the latest entry in Hewlett-Packard's 2100 series of netbooks, is what the company's Mini 1000 aspires to be when it grows up. But it carries a grown-up price as well: $529 for our test unit's midlevel configuration. HP has assembled a compelling package that could go toe-to-toe with the Asus N10Jc. But like Asus's heavyweight netbook, the Mini 2140 in its premium configuration bears a price tag that approaches what you'd expect to find on a good all-purpose machine like the Sony VGN-NR485 ($800).

The $529 HP Mini 2140 (starting at $499) rises above the majority of the netbook competition by incorporating a well-designed keyboard, a durable design, and more than seven hours of battery life. Some may prefer the $499 Samsung NC10 (also a LAPTOP Editors’ Choice winner). It’s $30 less than the similarly configured HP Mini 2140, and its six-cell battery doesn’t bulge from the bottom of the chassis like the Mini 2140. But the extra cash buys a more durable case and more endurance.

The HP Mini 2140 proves HP can make a serious netbook for business professionals and students alike. Unfortunately for HP, the amazing design and solid range of features are diminished by a low-resolution screen. That said, there is a silver lining to this stormy cloud. HP informs us that the 2140 will be offered with a higher resolution screen (1366 x 768) later in 2009 for a modest price increase, and we're glad to hear that. Last year after we reviewed the HP Mini-note 2133 we said, "If HP decides to replace the VIA processors with the new Intel Atom processors or alternative processors from Intel, the Mini-Note would become the undisputed champion of the subnotebook market." The truth is the Mini 2140 comes very, very close.

Commentaire
