The Altec Lansing speakers were of reasonable quality, but they aren’t the Folio 13’s strongest point. For that matter the 13.3in (1,366 x 768 resolution) screen had good colour depth when looked at directly, but becomes ordinary when viewed from side angles. Since these are the only major weak points of this Ultrabook, it’s clear that this is a stellar machine.

The HP Folio 13 is one of the best ultrabooks we’ve seen so far in terms of performance, battery life, and design. I would recommend it without hesitation if it didn’t have that dodgy touchpad. And that’s a hard flaw to ignore considering it’s one of the most important elements of a laptop. At $899 it’s only $50 more than the Toshiba Portege z835. While that system is thinner and lighter it can’t compete on performance. The Lenovo IdeaPad U300s has a more powerful CPU but costs almost twice as much and has fewer ports. The Folio manages to hit a nice goldilocks zone.

Oddly, HP is positioning the Folio 13 as both a consumer and a business notebook, and given its no-nonsense design, that makes sense. There’s even a version you can buy with a TPM chip inside for the crypto-obsessed guys in the IT department. The version sold through most consumer outlets, however, has a mountain of shovelware preinstalled — “HP Games,” an eBay icon, and two apps for streaming and creating music. The commercial/business versions don’t have any of these preloaded apps.

The HP Folio is in the house! We’ve been excited about this business-focused ultraportable since we got a first glimpse last year and went hands-on at CES. The enterprise version (with TPM) is $999, but the configuration available to consumers costs just $899. The specs are all still here including a Core i5 processor, 128GB SSD, and even the backlit keys.

The consumer version of the HP Folio 13.3 inch ultrabook is starting at $898. The business version will follow in January, featuring an embedded TPM security chip, Windows 7 Professional, and an optional three-year warranty, including HP’s Care Pack. A USB-2 docking station will also be available, offering additional monitor and speaker outputs and enhanced connectivity options.

We have a number of great things to say about the HP Folio 13 after spending a few weeks using this modestly-priced ultrabook. For starters, the build quality is second to none in the ultrabook category. The aluminum construction makes the Folio 13 extremely solid without making it too thick or heavy. Not only that, but HP didn't sacrifice something important like a media card reader just to save a fraction of an inch or an extra ounce of weight. Yes, it stinks that you can't easily replace components or swap the battery, but these are pretty standard issues with ultrabooks. Bottom line, if you can live with the average glossy screen and twitchy clickpad the HP Folio 13 is an very solid, affordable ultrabook with a good balance of performance and features.

But if the HP Folio 13 isn't the longest-lasting ultrabook on the market, well, it isn't the thinnest or lightest or fastest, either. What it is, is one of the most immaculate designs we've seen, with clever attention to small details as well as thoughtful attention paid to big issues like connectivity and typing comfort. With either a slightly brighter screen or a couple of better benchmark numbers, the Folio 13 would have bumped our Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook UX31 from its top spot; as is, it's a must-have on ultrabook shoppers' short lists.

When it comes to Windows ultrabooks, the HP Folio 13 is the best of the bunch in terms of performance, price, and ergonomics, provided you can live with a less-than-razor-thin design. This laptop is targeted at small businesses but it's really for anyone who wants a reliable ultrabook that isn't a MacBook Air.

The Folio 13 is a good showing for HP, combining solid value, admirable build quality and excellent longevity into a package that’s only slightly bigger than other Ultrabooks. If you’re looking for an ultrabook that won’t have you scrambling for a power outlet, this is pretty much your only option at the moment – for an afternoon outing you can even leave the AC power adapter behind. The screen is an unfortunate fly in the ointment, but it’s counter-balanced by the best all-in-one touchpad I’ve ever used on the PC side of things. If you’ve got a budget that won’t stretch beyond a thousand dollars and a desire for all-day computing in a light package, the Folio might be the best in a field of one. That said, with all the Ultrabooks shown at CES 2012 (including HP’s own stunning ENVY 14 Spectre) you might wait a couple of months before making your final decision

Ultrabooks have become one of the most talked about tech trends as we head into 2012 and the HP Folio 13 is one of these new, sleek, ultraportable notebooks. It weighs only 3.2-pounds, has extra long battery life and speedy performance thanks to its Intel Core i5 CPU and 128GB solid-state hard drive.

If you've been wondering whether you should buy the HP Folio 13, the answer is probably yes. (After all, we're guessing people who want a higher-res display and lighter build have already moved on.) There's just so much to love in this $900 machine: it boots quickly, includes a robust selection of ports, can be configured with helpful business features and offers a refreshingly comfortable typing experience.

The HP Folio 13 offers solid performance, fast boots, fantastic sound, and the best battery life of any Ultrabook on the market. Business users will also appreciate the sturdy design, backlit keyboard, and Ethernet port, though they'll want to make sure they buy a version that comes with HP ProtectTools. However, the device also suffers from a stiff touchpad and the dimmest screen in its class.

Overall, the HP Folio 13-1008TU Ultrabook is excellent. It's not the lightest unit in its class (the Toshiba is 1.1kg compared to the HP's 1.5kg), but it's solidly built, very comfortable to use, has USB 3.0 and supplies long battery life. Its screen also isn't too bad and its performance was quite swift.

There’s just one variant of the HP Folio 13 for now and this retails for Rs.69,990, so it’s about 10K cheaper than the Dell (not to mention, better equipped) and about 25K cheaper than the Toshiba, which makes it the best buy out of the three. The Folio scores high on the excellent industrial design and it feels and looks like it can take a beating, when compared to the other two, which seem a bit delicate. We love the attention to detail, connectivity options, great battery life and excellent keyboard. If you can live with the godawful trackpad buttons, then we highly recommend you check out this Ultrabook, as it’s one of the best in the market and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg (well, just an arm actually).

The HP Folio 13-2000 is the company's first attempt at making one of Intel's ultrabooks and, by golly, it’s got most of it right. The screen may let it down, but the laptop looks good, performs well, looks after its battery and comes in at a very reasonable price of £749. It's hard to argue against such a well-rounded package.

The HP Folio 13 is a solid effort from HP that, instead of blindly shedding features and usability in the name of thin-and-light, strikes a reasonable balance. It may be a tad pricey for some shoppers, but including a solid-state drive always drives up a laptop's price. This model should definitely be on your short list of Ultrabooks to consider. Thicker and heavier than the average ultrabook, the Folio 13 may actually be a more sensible option for many users.

We gave the HP Folio 13 an Editors' Choice award when we first saw it in January, and the Folio 13-1020us doesn't change our high opinion of the ultrabook. We could wish for a mite brighter display and four or five ounces less weight (as if we could get those things without sacrificing battery life), but as is it's a combination of value, performance, and portability that exemplifies what ultrabooks are all about.

Assuming the display and bloatware don't scare you off (and they probably shouldn't, honestly), the Folio 13 ought to be toward the top of your list if you're shopping for an ultrabook. The system's nearly fingerprint-proof finish, professional aesthetics, comfy backlit keyboard, lengthy battery life and snappy performance make it an easy sell at $900. Here's hoping the coming wave of Ivy Bridge ultrabooks are equally solid.

HP is aggressively pricing its first ultrabook at just $900 for the Folio 13 with some impressive features but it is hampered by a few major issues. Performance from the system is very good and the battery life is currently the best in the ultrabook segment. The extra size does give it extra peripheral ports that most of the competition provide.

The 1.6GHz Core i5 2467M processor and 4GB of RAM are fast enough for most everyday tasks, although you can't fit more RAM. 4GB is enough for now, but it may not be enough in future as software tends to become more memory intensive. The Intel integrated graphics chip is fast enough for playing high definition video and older games, but not the latest 3D titles.

The Folio 13 comes with an industry-standard one-year parts and labor warranty. Windows 7 Professional and BIOS-level security make this ultrabook a good fit for business, while a comfortable backlit keyboard makes it a good fit for typists. The HP Folio 13 certainly isn't the slimmest, lightest or best-looking ultrabook I've seen, nor does it have the best screen. But its smart appearance is likely to appeal to the professionals among you and the cutbacks in the screen resolution have resulted in a fair asking price.

Personally, I like the HP Folio 13 more than most, and pricing is decent at around $1000 for our review unit. Compared with other business Ultrabooks, such as the Toshiba Z830, the HP Folio 13 stands out slightly in terms of design. The HP Folio is generally an excellent Ultrabook, marrying consistent design to good build quality, thoughtful features and class-leading battery life. The flipside is that Folio can be noisy under load, the touchpad buttons are stiff and it has yet to see the significant price drops that have made initially more expensive rivals become arguably better value. However, it remains an attractive option.

HP sells the Folio 13 as a business Ultrabook, but to be honest, we have hard time seeing what makes this an enterprise laptop.
