Because it's a business laptop, it comes with Windows 7 Pro installed, a vPro chipset, and you also get HP's ProtectTools software. This includes a suite of applications ranging from theft recovery (Computrace) to drive encryption, and there is also a credential manager that can keep records of your passwords, fingerprints and face (for face recognition logins).

The HP EliteBook Folio 9470m falls into the same trap as so many other laptops: it has good processing power, the body is well built and the battery life is more than sufficient, but the screen is of such terrible quality (despite its matte surface) that it drags the overall rating all the way down to three stars.

Whenever I ask a vendor what the resolution of the notebook they're releasing is, the reply of "1366x768" is always tinged with either sheepishness or defiance. I'm reasonably certain that somewhere in the bowels of the HPs and Dells of the world there's a product designer who just knows that some bean counter is going to hamstring his or her beautiful design with a dismally low quality display just to save a few bucks per unit.

The HP EliteBook Folio 9470m, like the Folio 13 before it, offers a nice balance of portability and power with long battery life. There are some significant drawbacks, the biggest one being the display. Our $1,349 base configuration isn’t the only one available. HP also offers the same internals, plus a 1600 x 900 display, for $1,549.

The Elitebook Folio 9470m satisfies a lot of business needs, offering a full range of connections and security features you won’t find in most consumer laptops. It’s attractive, compact, and reasonably lightweight, and it offers good—if not always outstanding—performance and battery life. HP could have provided a higher-resolution display option, a better keyboard, and a little more system memory; some users might wish for more storage space, too. The price tag is also a tad high—but not sufficiently so to deter business travelers from taking it into serious consideration.

HP's EliteBook Folio 9470m smartly fills a gap in the EliteBook line. Like Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon, it brings elegant engineering and IT-friendly manageability to the ultrabook segment; even more than the Lenovo, it'll appeal to companies that use docking stations and laptops as desktop solutions. While users appreciate its sleek styling, comfortable keyboard, and soft-touch paint, IT managers will applaud its battery flexibility and the option to downgrade to Windows 7.

The Elitebook Folio 9470m is a light, full-featured variation on the business ultrabook, with all the security extras, ports, and solid construction you’d want and a killer battery life. It lacks originality, and has a high price tag. The lower-res screen lacks touch, and the entire laptop feels too traditional for its own good. Traditionalists may love it, but keep in mind that more flexible computers are available, including forthcoming models from HP; the Elitebook Revolve bears serious consideration.

Although a little heavy for an ultrabook, the EliteBook Folio 9470m redeems itself with a removable battery and desktop dock support, plus other features to appeal to enterprise buyers. However, the lack of a touchscreen means that it is not ideal for Windows 8.

Business users shopping for an enterprise-friendly Ultrabook will find plenty to like in the HP EliteBook Folio 9470m, including its many connectivity options, strong battery life, TPM security and MIL-SPEC tested chassis. However, for around the same price, the 3-pound ThinkPad X1 Carbon provides a superior screen, keyboard, touchpads and webcam, but lacks the 9470m's port spread, docking capability and replaceable / expandable battery.

With the HP EliteBook Folio 9470m Ultrabook you’re getting one of the nicest business-minded computers on the market today. Priced at $1,349.00 USD straight from HP, you’re going to get what you paid for. This is a machine you’re going to be able to use for years to come, and with the hardware this Ultrabook comes with right out of the box, it’s unlikely you’ll need to update your innards any time soon.

The HP Elitebook Folio 9470m has a good base of hardware, particularly if your business is planning to continue to use Windows 7 for the next year or so while your development team evaluates Windows 8. However, this is not the system to buy if you're jumping into Windows 8 with both feet. The awkward controls while in Windows 8's main screen means that your mainline users will gripe quite a bit when presented with the new interface, leading to decreased adoption. Better to grab one of the systems with a touch interface like the Acer Iconia W700-6465 or the Lenovo ThinkPad Twist if you're going with Windows 8. Otherwise, more traditional systems like the Toshiba Portege Z935 and the Lenovo ThinkPad Carbon X1 make more sense if you're sticking to Windows 7.

The HP Elitebook Folio 9470m is ahead of the curve by offering Windows 8 in a business laptop. Pity it's not great in Windows 8. The HP Elitebook Folio 9470m is one of the first Windows 8 corporate notebooks on the market. On one hand, it's a speedy and slim ultrabook, on the other, you'll probably want to ""downgrade"" to Windows 7 once you take it out of the box.

The way we feel about the EliteBook Folio 9470 reminds us of how we felt about the HP Folio 13, which we reviewed nearly a year ago. Both are buttoned-up sorts of systems: serious-looking, and with enough security features to satisfy the IT guys. And yet, conservative as they seem, they ended up being among the best Ultrabooks in their day -- so good, in fact, that we'd recommend them even to regular consumers.

HP:
