Uncompromising. A very powerful subnotebook with long battery life? HP has crammed the most it possibly could into this 12.1-inch machine. This smallest of the EliteBooks has a Core i7, along with wireless technology from WLAN to GPS and ports from FireWire to docking. There was even room for a DVD drive.

The EliteBook 2450p is an excellent business tool with great build quality and excellent usability. But where it really shines is everyday performance.

After wading through netbook after anemic netbook over the past two years, you could be forgiven for dismissing HP’s diminutive EliteBook 2540p as yet another underperforming compact notebook at first glance. The smallest business laptop HP offers, the EliteBook 2540p is light on the scales but heavy on performance and build quality.

In last year's ultraportable notebook roundup (August 2009), HP's EliteBook 2530p put in a strong showing, wowing us with its good looks, sturdy construction, and strong performance. Its successor, the EliteBook 2540p, is strikingly similar in many regards but has the advantage of new and improved components and a lower price.

I am really happy with this laptop, don't let the low scores fool you, these are great scores for an ultraportable. The HP EliteBook 2450p is a great ultra portable for any road warrior that is looking for a easy to use and very portable machine to take with them when they are on the road.

Overall, the HP EliteBook 2540p is faster and has more connectivity options than the 2530p. It's also expensive. But if you're in business and you want a strong yet small and fast notebook with good energy-efficiency credentials, then it's worth hassling your financial controller so that can eventually get your hands on it.

Even though it's a small laptop, the 12in EliteBook 2540p is no mug when it comes to performance. It also doesn't make any compromises when it comes to features. You can think of it as a laptop that has all the mobility benefits of a netbook, yet the performance and features of a mainstream desktop. This combination comes at a high price, but if you can afford it you'll definitely get a lot of out this little notebook.

The EliteBook 2540p might not deliver a huge upgrade from the 2430p, but it’s a great ultraportable. The EliteBooks have kept quality high, and the Core i5 standard voltage processor on this model is an excellent example of how HP is designing these computers with real users in mind, not some idealized “road warrior”. The system comes in a range of prices, though good configurations can be had using HP’s Smart Buy pre-configured models. From a consumer standpoint it’s not an inexpensive computer, but it offers a lot for the money.

The HP EliteBook 2540p easily ranks among the better 12-inch ultraportable business notebooks we've seen. It offers exceptional build quality and a well-crafted design on par with its main competitor, the ThinkPad X201, and offers a very similar parts configuration. In terms of beating the competition, the 2540p offers a built-in optical drive whereas the ThinkPad X201 doesn't. For some users this isn't generally a problem and the X201 managed to get higher battery life figures from the same hardware configuration sans optical drive even with a higher resolution screen.
When it comes down to which company makes a better business notebook, I think HP and Lenovo both offer exceptional products. Although in the end, it's about the look and feel you prefer. The HP EliteBook series offers a more refined brushed-metal appearance, while the ThinkPad line has a more rugged rubberized-paint old school-look. Overall, both notebooks deserve equal consideration if you're looking to buy a 12-inch business notebook.

All of a sudden, HP seems intent on not making the purchasing decision easy for buyers looking for an ultraportable laptop. We recently reviewed the HP EliteBook 2740p Tablet PC, a convertible 12.1-inch tablet that delivers touch-screen abilities but no optical drive. HP added an optical drive, Core i7 power, and a host of extras to this already-solid 12.1-inch model. The result? The best mainstream business ultraportable we’ve seen.

Business ultraportables encompass a wide range of systems, the smallest of which have 12-inch widescreens. A 12-inch screen has to be the cut-off point here or else you would be venturing into netbook territory. The HP EliteBook 2540p makes the fewest sacrifices among its rivals, but you have to be willing to put up with a 12-inch screen.

At $1,629, the HP EliteBook 2540p is not for bargain hunters. But if you travel frequently on business and want a notebook that can look good while standing up to some abuse, this ultraportable is worth the premium. It also boasts fast performance and will easily last through that cross-country flight. Some may prefer the Lenovo ThinkPad X201s, which offers a bigger 320GB hard drive and a longer-lasting nine-cell battery for the same price.

The EliteBook 2540p is an extremely sturdy laptop with long battery life and excellent portability, but it struggles to compete with laptops that have longer battery life or use Intel’s latest processors. It's still a good choice if you’re looking for an ultra-portable with lots of security features right now, but bear in mind it will be superseded by newer Sandy Bridge models in the next six months.
