In a sea of regular bar-shaped smartphones. HMD's Fusion stands out for two reasons. It is not only modular but can also give its users easy access to its internals for tinkering and repair. After using the HMD Fusion, it's not too hard to conclude that it follows the typical HMD philosophy of delivering the basics. The phone is a proper design exercise and, for the first time, brings the goodness of modular smartphones into a budget package. The last time I experienced something similar was on Motorola's Z series, which spanned the mid-range to the premium segment. Nothing's CMF Phone 1 (Review) also retails at this price point and takes a modular approach to a smartphone, but all of its beautifully designed accessories are functional, not smart.

The HMD Fusion is available for Rs 17,999, for the 8GB+256GB configuration and this comes bundled with both the Flashy and Gaming outfits. The device has some interesting traits to it, considering its repairability and accessories, but it is quite an average performer considering the segment. Its chief competitors, the Redmi Note 14 (review) and Realme Narzo 70 (review), both have a superior display, higher performance, better charging speeds, comparable cameras and more durable designs. The HMD Fusion offers several advantages, including a clean OS, modularity that enhances its versatility, a decent camera system, and reliable battery life. While these are commendable features, the phone could benefit from improvements in its multimedia experience and software support.

The HMD Fusion catches the eye with its retro-inspired design, repair-friendly build, and ‘Smart Outfits.’ However, it falls short in key areas. While the display is vibrant indoors, it struggles with outdoor brightness. Performance is adequate for casual use but falls short of competitors in the similar price range. The camera offers decent results in good lighting but suffers from inconsistent color reproduction and slow shutter response. Overall, the HMD Fusion is a stylish device with clever add-ons but lacks the substance to compete effectively in its segment. The HMD Fusion aims to make a splash in the smartphone market with a blend of features and affordability. Priced at Rs 17,999, this smartphone sports a unique design and is powered by the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor.

Earlier this year, I visited the retail store of a major smartphone brand in the US and noticed a long line of customers. Initially, I assumed they were there to purchase new smartphones, but to my surprise, they had come to replace their phone batteries. A few months later, I was chatting with a friend who mentioned that he had also chosen to replace his phone’s battery rather than upgrade to a $1,200 smartphone. This made me realise something: why don’t tech companies make repairable smartphones? Or phones that can be updated and improved over time without the need to invest in a new device?

HMD Fusion excels at a few things, such as modular design and pure stock Android experience, which sets it apart from the competition. Also, no competitor in this price range can offer these features now. However, the smartphone misses the basics of being a daily driver. The underwhelming display with IPS LCD panel is far behind other smartphones offering full HD and OLED screens at this price. While the cameras have slightly improved, the 108-megapixel sensor doesn’t translate well into real-world results. The photos produced by the HMD smartphone, even in good light, outdoor conditions, and in daylight most of the time, are average. It is underwhelming in low light that you can barely look at the details.

On paper, the HMD Fusion is a tough sell. Which says a lot about today’s budget phone space. You can get devices with massively improved screens for less money. But in terms of longevity, HMD is on the right track. The major components of the HMD Fusion can be replaced on a shoestring budget. Whether you’re the clumsy type, have young, careless, and energetic kids, or tend to hold onto your headset until the battery can’t support your lifestyle, potential problems are a bargain fix. A slight discount covers the cost of the screen. But if you’re certain you need a screen with gorgeous colours and bright highlights, this isn’t the one for you. Try for a discounted Samsung Galaxy A35 or the Motorola Moto G55. And if you love a good book, the TCL 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5G is sublime.

The HMD Fusion was designed with repairability and sustainability in mind, which you will rarely find in other smartphones these days. The hardware inside the phone is also quite decent. The display is color-accurate and can get decently bright. The chipset is quite good and can play many of the latest mobile games. Even the camera and the battery performance are quite good. The pricing is a bit high compared to other smartphones in the market with the same hardware, but none of them have the same DIY repair capability as this phone. The closest alternative phone is the Infinix Note 40 Pro Plus, which has far better features inside but costs a little more. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your requirements and needs.

Commentaire
