Le Pixel 8 était notre coup de cœur de 2023 et le Google Pixel 9 fait mieux sur beaucoup de points, mais pas tous. Un excellent smartphone, dont le nouveau design peut diviser, mais à la qualité de fabrication irréprochable. Son format compact, son écran plus lumineux, ses bonnes performances, ses 7 ans de mises à jour logicielles et son excellent bloc caméra sont autant d'atouts à mettre à son actif. Pourtant, nous sommes plusieurs fois restés sur notre faim lors du test. Notre première déception concerne l'autonomie. Le Pixel 9 semble calibré pour tenir tout juste une journée, sans offrir beaucoup de marge de manœuvre. L'écran plus lumineux (et non-LTPO) joue évidemment un rôle clé dans son manque d'endurance.

Bien sous tous les rapports, le nouveau Pixel 9 est particulièrement impressionnant dans sa prestation photo. Même s’il ne dispose pas, comme les modèles Pro et Pro Fold, d’un téléobjectif dédié, il est très polyvalent et a tout ce qu’il faut pour proposer des clichés de grande qualité. Des photos qui en mettront plein la vue sur l’écran OLED de 6,3 pouces, capable d’afficher de superbes couleurs, par ailleurs très justes. Dommage que la dalle choisie par Google soit un peu juste en termes de luminosité. Car c’est bien là le seul reproche que l’on peut faire au Pixel 9. Très performant, sauf dans les jeux les plus gourmands où il montre vite ses limites, le Pixel 9 est un formidable smartphone à tout faire. Et avec l’IA Gemini intégrée et prête à l’emploi, il a de quoi s’imposer comme un indispensable de cette fin d’année.

Le Google Pixel 9 débarque sur un marché ultra concurrentiel sachant en prime qu’Apple vient de lever le voile sur son iPhone 16 et que le Samsung Galaxy S24 est aujourd’hui moins cher. Le nouveau smartphone de Google reste toutefois une référence en photo, surtout avec son ultra grand-angle largement boosté et son zoom numérique plus performant que certains téléobjectifs optiques. Sa mécanique n’est pas la plus puissante du moment, pour jouer notamment, mais elle assure un comportement fluide au quotidien et une bonne autonomie. Dommage qu’il faille autant de temps pour recharger.

Le Google Pixel 9 est joli, bien conçu et agréable à utiliser dans l'ensemble. Bon en photo, doté d'un bel écran et proposant une interface Pixel Experience toujours aussi chouette, il a de sérieux arguments pour plaire. En revanche, il n'a pas la pleine puissance attendue d'un smartphone haut de gamme et son autonomie est un peu trop juste dès lors qu'on a un usage actif du smartphone. Et ça risque d'être le cas pour bon nombre de personnes prêtes à mettre presque 1000 euros dans un téléphone. Si seulement la charge était plus rapide pour compenser cela. En outre, on ne peut s'empêcher de penser que ce modèle aurait pu être plus endurant s'il avait embarqué une dalle LTPO descendant jusqu'à 1 Hz.

Dans la dernière génération de Pixel, la différence de prix entre le modèle de base et le modèle Pro était de 300 euros. Avec un niveau de performance similaire et presque les mêmes fonctionnalités, le Pixel 8 constituait une alternative aux modèles haut de gamme de Google. Malheureusement, Google n'a pas pu maintenir le niveau de prix en 2024. Ainsi, le Pixel 9, avec un prix de vente conseillé de 900 euros, se situe déjà dans le segment premium. Si nous configurons l'espace de stockage avec 256 Go - c'est la quantité de stockage offerte au lancement du modèle Pro - le prix passe à près de 1.000 euros. Et alors, le pixel de base n'est plus que 100 euros moins cher que le Pro.

Autre aspect qui me donne envie de froncer les sourcils, toujours pas de chargeur dans la boîte. Par conséquent, difficile d’être tendre avec le Pixel 9 sur son autonomie. Pour la simple et bonne raison que je ne peux m’en faire une idée précise. En utilisant ce qui trainait chez moi, un chargeur Anker à 45W, il a mis plus d’une heure et demie à reprendre totalement des forces. Ce n’est pas Byzance. Ces petits défauts, conjugués à une arrivée tardive des fonctionnalités d’IA, ne me font pas pour autant regretter le titre de mon article. Oui, le Pixel 9 s’approche de la perfection. L’atteindra-t-il lorsque ses promesses d’IA seront disponibles en France ? Vous aurez ma réponse d’ici quelques semaines.

Avec ce Pixel 9, Google livre l'un de ses meilleurs smartphones à ce jour, et justifie sa montée en gamme tarifaire. Alliant un design ultra-premium à des améliorations matérielles et logicielles bienvenues, ce modèle dispose d'un écran d'excellente facture, d'une meilleure autonomie, et d'une puissance suffisante pour tous les usages. Malgré un temps de charge encore trop lent et l'absence d'Android 15 en sortie de boîte, l'appareil offre une interface riche en options de personnalisation et de nombreuses fonctions d'IA, même si certaines restent pour l'heure inaccessibles en France. Du côté de la photo, le Pixel 9 se démarque également comme l'un des meilleurs photophones de 2024. En somme, si tout n'est pas parfait, cette nouvelle itération peut regarder la concurrence droit dans les yeux.

Ce n'est pas bien compliqué : le Pixel 9 est le meilleur smartphone jamais sorti par Google. Même si l'on trouve à redire sur la chauffe importante et la recharge trop lente, on comprend bien que ce n'est pas du tout l'objet des appareils Google qui, eux, veulent se concentrer sur le logiciel, et rien que le logiciel. Et autant dire qu'on est servis. Par la meilleure politique de mises à jour qui existe sur Android, d'une part, et par une interface impeccable, ouvrant l'accès à d'innombrables options de personnalisation ainsi qu'à d'amusantes fonctionnalités d'intelligence artificielle. Ce dernier point est encore un peu laborieux à apprécier à sa juste valeur en France, où beaucoup de fonctions manquent encore à l'appel. Mais, choisir un Pixel, c'est avoir l'assurance d'être le premier servi quand celles-ci seront finalement débloquées en Occident. Cerise sur le gâteau : le Pixel 9 est aussi parmi les photophones les plus polyvalents du marché. On vous l'a dit : il a tout pour lui.

La différence entre les Pixel et les autres smartphones, c’est qu’avec les Pixel, on ne se limite pas au matériel et c’est vraiment tout ce qui sépare les Pixel de ses concurrents. En effet, une fois la partie matérielle testée, il reste toute la partie logicielle et chaque année, ce sont de nouvelles fonctions qui, une fois qu’on y a goûté, sera très difficile de s’en passer. Je me souviens de la première fois que Google a proposé la transcription dans son enregistreur vocal, il a fallu attendre une bonne année avant de se dire qu’on pouvait utiliser un autre smartphone qu’un Pixel. Eh bien, c'est la sensation que nous avons après avoir testé ces nouveaux Pixel 9.

The Pixel 9 is therefore a good phone that is overshadowed by better Google phones at both ends of the spectrum. I would wait for a sale to make the price more tempting.

With an MSRP of $799, the Pixel 9 is already in the premium segment. If we were to pick up the 256 GB model (the Pro model comes with this much storage space at launch), the price rises to $899. This makes the basic Pixel is only $100 cheaper than the Pro. As a technology journalist, this makes me wonder who I should recommend the Pixel 9 to. This is because Pixel fans get more of what characterizes the device series in the Pro model. Those who don't care about the manufacturer will enjoy more powerful and more functional devices for less money.

Overall, I really like the Pixel 9 and I do think it’s one of the best Pixels Google has made in years. But even in this one week I have realised that I thoroughly enjoyed using the phone. The design, the display, the camera performance, the battery life, the clean Android and some of its nifty AI Gemini features make the Pixel 9 a superb phone that can delight users day after day. That it remains relatively cool while running games is cherry as that idiom goes. But it is not winning all the time. The chipset — and more so its performance tuning — could have been better. I always thought I wanted the biggest phone. I really did. The Pixel 9 has changed my line of thinking a little bit. At $799, it’s $100 more than last year’s base model. Still, if I was ignorant of those versions and thought this was the only model Google released this year, I’d still be completely satisfied.
